0:00 now if i've ever seen a talk link this is it oh are you are you okay uh it's just
0:05 been a really long couple of years you're meditating uh-huh you're messing
0:08 with you call it meditating on what brought you to this point yeah
0:12 it has been a crazy couple weeks we've got the ryzen launch the Radeon launch
0:17 uh NVIDIA super launch how first of all how are you doing are
0:22 you alive still
0:25 oh no uh yeah yeah i'm alive i mean i i've done um oh
0:31 geez i mean i worked i haven't stopped working like there's i just have not had
0:36 a weekend i haven't had a break it's just been one thing after the other geez
0:41 i don't envy you yeah so if you guys don't know Anthony's here you hosted
0:45 your first tech link uh recently that was cool yeah and now you're you're here
0:49 on talk link because you know all the stuff about the ryzen and Radeon and
0:54 everything well i mean i've probably forgotten most of it and like just the
0:57 haze of everything that's happened over the past couple of weeks but well let's
1:01 refresh your memory so yeah let me let me go over quickly what has happened so
1:04 the past few weeks has been crazy uh AMD
1:07 announced the ryzen 3000 and Radeon 5000
1:11 uh gpus uh on june 10th and they set the
1:14 launch for july 7th then NVIDIA came out and was like hey we
1:19 got a little thing and they teased the super we didn't know it was gpus at that time
1:23 but we were like oh it's probably gpus they teased them on may 23rd
1:27 then we had leaks on leaks on leaks so many leaks and then NVIDIA finally
1:31 launched the super series on july 2nd
1:34 and that caused AMD to announce a price change yup to their cards before they
1:41 launched on july 7th and now
1:45 that has really like like so many changes in a short amount of time set
1:48 the stage for a market that is now very interesting oh
1:53 yeah absolutely like Intel's entire product lineup is basically obsolete at
1:57 this point whoa you heard it here first just kidding you
2:00 heard it online detectives yeah basically but maybe next time
2:05 so verizon let's talk about ryzen first okay uh there was a obscene amount of
2:10 hype for these processors before they came out i mean usually there are for
2:15 AMD processors like um like ryzen first gen and second gen people were like oh
2:19 they're gonna be so much better than Intel right and you know usually you got
2:23 to kind of temper your expectations a little bit kind of right claw it back
2:27 it's going to be fine but it's not going to be that good yeah
2:30 but uh you know this time around they kind of sort of were on the closer end
2:35 of that good yeah like they didn't beat Intel everywhere but right they beat
2:40 Intel hard in the places they did yeah this i think this launch is like one of
2:44 the few examples of like hype being set up for an upcoming
2:48 product and then the product launching and it actually
2:52 kind of living up to it yeah yeah i was i was i just watched um the
2:57 your review uh on you know double speed because i was
3:01 trying to prepare but like i was surprised
3:04 uh well and you were sitting right next to me when you're testing all the stuff and
3:08 i was like asking you how it's going as you were testing i was like yeah
3:11 multi-threading's great but how's single core you're like single chord
3:15 yeah great too yeah it's all looking pretty great the only thing is
3:19 uh we did notice the issue with the Windows scheduler
3:23 so in some games not all of them i've tested that recently
3:28 some games get better performance if you set them
3:31 all to one die right so one ccd as they're calling them
3:35 um this was kind of a thing back when ryzen
3:39 first launched as well where like it would cross ccx's which is like
3:43 it's like modular clusters yeah
3:46 so in this case going across dies actually
3:50 causes even more of a delay and um you want to minimize that as much
3:54 as possible for something like a game that requires like super high reaction
3:59 time right for the processor and is this a result of AMD's chiplets design a
4:04 little bit because they're like kind of taking these modules and gluing them together yeah and it's it's not actually
4:09 a bad thing to do and i think Intel is actually doing it as well right soon
4:13 but the major issue with it is that um right now
4:19 Windows doesn't know what to do with it i don't know about Linux performance yet
4:22 i haven't looked at the furonics reviews or anything like that
4:25 um because i haven't had time
4:30 you will but um yeah like it looks like Windows is
4:34 basically the bottleneck here okay so is that a situation where we
4:39 might see more performance kind of being able to
4:42 be squeezed out of them down the line with driver updates and i think so okay
4:47 so like with a new chipset driver um and maybe some updates from microsoft
4:51 um and you know a little bit of optimization from game developers too
4:55 right uh i think we should see quite a bit more performance coming out of them
4:59 in the coming uh few months well that's sweet yeah up the hype even more
5:04 because people people i don't know did you see this people lined up yeah to buy
5:08 these processors i think at the micro center and uh there were some images on
5:13 an article i read the micro center and like tokyo in the uh
5:17 uh akihabara i don't know how to say that i
5:20 believe they call it they just call it akihabara what is it
5:28 that's the one they were lining up yeah just call it akita that's what they do
5:31 akiba okay sorry i'm not japanese so despite all the hype though there were a
5:35 couple issues uh that uh with the with
5:38 the ryzen launch yeah now one of those was
5:41 BIOS update shenanigans oh yeah so you i
5:45 remember you saying when you were writing the review you were like i think i think i was writing a script
5:50 of my own and i just heard you go like
5:53 what yeah um
5:57 in our case we got an email from ASUS
6:00 basically saying hey there's a bug we fixed it you should update
6:04 and i'm like oh what was the bug and they're like oh it wasn't boosting
6:08 properly and i'm like oh
6:11 so all my numbers yeah i got up to this point yeah so i had to throw out
6:15 everything that i had done up to that point big oof yeah and uh long story short i had to
6:22 come in over the weekend which is why i've had this like i've been i've been
6:25 doing like late days in the past couple weeks but like the weekend was just a
6:30 total wash you're a true champion Anthony i don't know about that the
6:33 people are outside screaming your name
6:37 they want you to sign all manner of body parts oh it's kind of weird yeah to be
6:41 honest toenails what like toenails toenails yeah
6:46 whatever works so you were saying that some outlets didn't quite get the memo
6:51 before they published their reviews so there might be some kind of some skewed
6:55 numbers on like the low and high side from what i understand um
7:00 yeah i think there were some outlets that didn't get the memo i think there uh might have been one or two vendors
7:05 who were like trying to get it out but they couldn't in time right like i don't
7:09 know how many people were able to actually take ASUS's BIOS update on
7:12 friday afternoon and then just retest everything in time for sunday
7:16 um that was a big ask and i think that a lot of people put in a lot of extra time
7:20 right so as time goes on we might see some
7:24 updated numbers from outlets or
7:27 i think it'll be worth revisiting in a couple of months when everything has had
7:31 a chance to mature and we know more about what the platform is
7:35 capable of on a broader scale now the other thing was
7:40 you linked me to a video by der der
7:44 bauer i believe it's dear bauer i never know how to say his name i think it just
7:48 means the fighter it's not durator no well i mean that is what it says that is
7:52 what it is yeah yeah but that's not right no uh so der bauer found that um
7:58 xfr so normally in the previous generations of verizon AMD has kind of
8:02 listed their base clocks and their boost clocks and then they have the xfr
8:05 frequencies yeah that are kind of above and beyond where it like auto overclocks
8:09 itself sort of and he found that AMD
8:12 kind of changed the way that they're listing that yeah so AMD is uh using
8:19 precision boost overdrive by default now which is what they introduced with
8:22 threadripper 2. that's basically an automatic
8:26 overclocking feature uh the only problem is that they're
8:30 listing the maximum frequency you can get out of that
8:33 not what the actual like boost clock you can expect should be right so a lot of
8:38 people have been seeing boost clocks that are much lower than what's printed
8:42 on the box and a lot of people are getting confused by that it's like well
8:45 maybe there's an update that'll fix it but no probably not it's down to the
8:49 silicon lottery whether your chip is capable of it
8:53 whether your motherboard is capable of it whether your cooler is capable of it
8:58 right the stock cooler probably isn't
9:01 so so if you're not a gambling person
9:04 it's it's not good news yeah you might have to go to silicon
9:07 lottery you're forced into the casino whether you want to or not yeah play the
9:11 chips you're dealt all right let's bring this back so the
9:16 moral of the story is we've talked some about about some of the issues we talked
9:19 about the hype verizon but the the moral of the story is basically that like
9:24 it did surprise people who thought that AMD was going to be this this launch was
9:28 going to be another example of okay it's really great
9:31 multi-threaded but it still you know doesn't quite take it in single core
9:36 yeah it doesn't beat Intel in every game
9:39 but like there's some surprising examples of it doing just that yeah and
9:44 it's close enough in all the other examples that like
9:47 you can give up the 5 or 10 FPS that you know you might lose right going to ryzen
9:52 and then you'd gain so many more um
9:55 like use cases yeah like you can like the blender renders the uh
10:01 handbrake performance like for video editors for content creators it's just
10:05 it's so much so much more to offer and you save money
10:09 yeah look we're not being paid by NVIDIA or
10:13 AMD guys well we are being paid by NVIDIA but not by
10:16 AMD i'm i'm just kidding that was a joke
10:20 yeah people actually think we are paid by NVIDIA i'm pretty sure we're not well
10:23 to prove we're not paid by video maybe we should talk about radion now wow
10:27 i'm learning about segways not from Linus though i just would have
10:31 made one way cheesier so Radeon it's not
10:34 there wasn't nearly as much hype for these rx 5000 series as ryzen but it
10:40 was kind of i mean it was definitely an exciting kind of uh
10:44 teta tet in terms of
10:48 the radio the navi cards being announced then NVIDIA saying oh we got super cards
10:53 uh that's supposed to be you know we got you we you're in the corner now yeah and
10:56 then AMD's like guess what price drop
11:01 and then that actually positioned the rx
11:04 5000 series quite uh well in terms against the the super
11:10 serial not the super series but all of the rtx series well i would say
11:14 the super suit yeah all the rtx series but especially the supers um
11:19 maybe not the 2080. they don't have a response for that yes
11:22 uh classic well they have kind of like some decent
11:26 cards in a narrow range and then beyond that
11:30 uh it's a let's guess it's kind of
11:33 interesting how that went down though because the way AMD designed their new
11:37 gpus it actually kind of gets rid of their uh you've ever heard of fine wine
11:42 what uh people refer to as AMD's drivers causing better performance over time
11:46 right i've heard of it i don't understand it but you do so
11:50 a little bit uh i don't know if i know all of it but
11:53 uh the longer the short of it is they they reduce the performance impact
11:58 that an unoptimized game would have okay so
12:01 from this point forward the fine wine improvements are going to
12:06 be probably more incremental but very small improvements not as not as big
12:11 yeah not as big but at the same time you're getting more performance out of
12:14 the gate and i don't think NVIDIA was really
12:17 expecting that what was NVIDIA expecting because it seems like they they launched
12:22 you know um originally the 5700 was targeted at the
12:27 2016 and i guess it still is but and the 5700 xt was targeted at the
12:32 2070. right but now with the price drops
12:35 the 5700 is still targeted at the 2060 but the 5700 xt is now targeted at the
12:40 2060 super right so what were they expecting in
12:45 terms of i guess were they did they not see the price drop coming maybe they
12:48 thought that AMD didn't have the the margin for it but i mean there's been a
12:52 couple of uh conspiracy theories like they're price fixing and this was just
12:56 all just for show um i'm not sure about that it kind of
13:01 doesn't seem like something that AMD and NVIDIA
13:05 willing to do together yeah they they don't really like each
13:10 other that much in the GPU division i mean they work fine between GPU and CPU
13:14 right that's like the Radeon technology group is a separate thing jensen and sue
13:19 have some bad some bad blood yeah even though literally
13:22 yeah literally because they're related yeah but he he's not her uncle we should
13:27 clear that like uh yeah it's like half they're like it's
13:32 like a cousin kind of situation it's like a third cousin removed kind of
13:36 situation yeah it's kind of weird but do your research
13:40 Linus Linus so so the moral of the story for
13:44 these guys is that they actually when you take price into
13:48 account they are they perform pretty well across the board compared to their
13:52 direct NVIDIA competitors oh yeah like they actually more or less crush them um
13:57 at least the ones that they're positioned against
14:00 um although they do trade blows in productivity like i said um if you're
14:05 uh into um i can't visualize now which
14:09 ones were the ones that NVIDIA won but i do know that uh check out the LTT review
14:13 for like the specifics yeah but the margins are pretty big so depending on
14:17 what your workload is you'd want to choose one over the other
14:21 right you know really if you're a gamer
14:24 then the 5700 series looks pretty good now the only thing to
14:29 take into account there i guess is if you want rtx
14:32 yeah AMD doesn't really have the same kind of like extra features they have
14:36 this anti-lag thing yeah i haven't been able to test that yet because we don't
14:40 have the high speed camera here yet right um but
14:45 AMD has their own features mostly they're to do with managing the cards
14:49 cooling and managing lag that kind of thing because they do get very hot and
14:54 they do quite hot i remember i think the what
14:57 what the 5700 xt was at like 95.
15:00 oh yeah and it shut down it shut down in a menu yeah just sitting in the menu
15:06 that's not good looks like the power target is all messed up um i reported
15:10 this to AMD they managed to reproduce it they said that they didn't get quite the
15:14 temperatures that i did but i don't know that's okay they didn't say what temperatures
15:19 they got right but the fact that they could reproduce the bug means that it
15:23 seems like it's a firmware issue or like a driver issue
15:27 uh so um you can expect probably a
15:31 little bit less performance if that's the case if they need to drop
15:35 the target down gotcha um
15:38 but it's still pretty good so basically in both the Radeon and the
15:43 ryzen realms uh pretty good the story's pretty good
15:48 it's pretty good yeah which i mean it's like that's wasn't the case for the radion 7
15:53 launch oh no absolutely not great on 7 launch and we were all like uh what are
15:57 you doing AMD yeah like they got a card that competes with 2080 in terms of
16:01 price and it's like well yeah but the 2080 also has all these other features
16:06 and it basically isn't a nuclear reactor
16:09 um yeah so you don't want right
16:13 which is why you shouldn't buy the um
16:16 the reference design of the 5700 xt in my opinion okay that cooler is not
16:21 adequate for what they want to do with it right and i think that if you get a
16:25 uh partner board so something with a
16:29 beefier cooler on it uh maybe with a little bit of an
16:32 overclock that would probably be ideal and are
16:35 those are those coming out in august or are they out now they're coming out
16:39 later i'm not sure exactly when off the top of my head okay so by the time the
16:43 add-in boards come out any you know hopefully AMD has already resolved some
16:47 of these issues with uh overheating and yeah that kind of thing
16:52 okay right on so to conclude
16:55 is AMD now the king of
16:59 the CPU and GPU hill if the if such a hill exists
17:03 well there are many hills and they all depend on your price point gotcha
17:07 um the hill on which the ryzen 5 3600
17:11 exists i believe AMD has nailed down
17:15 because not only do they have the ryzen 5 3600
17:18 but they also have Radeon 5700 right
17:21 around that price point that you'd want a couple with a CPU like that
17:25 so i mean compared to the NVIDIA offerings unless you really want rtx or
17:29 you really need that hardware uh x264 encoder or h264 encoder right
17:34 um there's no reason to go up NVIDIA there's no
17:39 reason NVIDIA please keep paying us even though
17:42 we're saying that we're not it's not a thing come on
17:47 so uh very exciting to be uh on team red
17:50 very exciting time mm-hmm yep
17:53 and uh kind of a you know wake up and
17:57 think about your life kind of moment for team blue and team green
18:01 yeah i mean it must really suck to be a team blue engineer
18:04 you've been spending so much time trying to get 10 nanometer to go
18:09 and yeah it's just fighting you at every step of the way and it's delayed you for
18:14 so long that AMD has been able to leap over
18:19 what you've been able to accomplish so far and there's no band-aid that can really
18:23 fix it without them just dropping the price
18:26 well there you have it folks it's a sad day for some people very
18:30 happy day for others just like every other day really yeah it's basically how
18:34 life works well that's another episode of talk
18:38 linked and boy was it a gooden good good
18:41 one you think so i yeah oh okay i don't know how this works
18:47 i don't know how it works either i we're all just kind of going by the seat of
18:50 our pants if you want if you want to subscribe that's something you could do if you
18:54 want to get this t-shirt you could do that also
18:57 link's in the description we don't have sponsors for these videos yet oh
19:01 um but uh love you so much and
19:04 do you love them oh absolutely that would be awkward if you say i love each
19:08 and every one of you except you all right
19:12 see you later
