0:04 And welcome to the live show tonight, guys. I am the only one here and uh
0:09 well, I'm not the only one here. I'm one of two people here, but I'm the only one
0:12 who is who is physically able to sit and
0:17 do a live stream tonight. Slick's not feeling well. He's actually been sick
0:21 for the last week while he's been working on getting the forum up and
0:24 running. So the forum is working on a
0:29 local machine right now. Um he's played around with we're using vbolitin connect
0:34 5. So you know it's beta right now.
0:37 There's not a lot of support for it. There's some some tricky stuff. And uh
0:41 so he's still getting some bugs figured out. We still got to figure out how to
0:44 actually get it launched, whether we're paying for hosting or whether we're going to see if we can host it somewhere
0:49 else for now. Um, so we've got we've got all of that to figure out and then uh
0:54 we're pretty much ready to go. One thing I can promise is it will be up
1:00 before CES because the forum is our
1:05 brilliant plan to have uh to have all of
1:08 the content that we're producing, all of the videos that we're making while we're
1:11 at the show be sort of accompanied by little articles and maybe some pictures
1:16 to go along with it and all that kind of stuff. I mean, we're going to have a whole team there. It'll be me, Slick,
1:20 Diesel, and um an assistant to sort of
1:23 like carry bags and stuff. Actually, you know what? Here, why don't we start with
1:27 this? I'm going to check this out, guys. I'll be back in one moment. And Slick
1:30 can't entertain you while I'm gone,
1:39 unfortunately. Check this out. So, I did an unboxing of my Pelican case that I
1:44 that I purchased for myself for the FS700. Also, the lights are a little
1:48 bright. Hold on. Let me just play with these a little bit. Let's dim these
1:53 babies. All right. What's the point of
1:56 getting baller lights if you can't, you know, turn them
1:59 down. There we go. Let's see if that helps. Whoa. Yeah, that was not qu Okay.
2:05 See, the skin tones are better, but that was not not quite the desired effect
2:09 there. Let's try uh let's try cranking these back up. I did turn off a couple
2:14 of the other lights.
2:17 Okay, you know what? O, whatever. Okay, good enough.
2:23 Ah, Pelican case. So, if you guys saw my
2:26 unboxing, um, I got this for the FS700 camera, which is not the one that I'm
2:30 using for a lot of people, a lot of people complain about the image quality
2:35 of the $8,000 camera, but what they don't realize is we don't use the $8,000
2:40 camera for everything. In fact, the $8,000 camera is intended only for
2:44 certain projects. So, check this out, guys. Pelican cases are freaking
2:49 awesome. All these little foamy pieces here actually can come out in little
2:54 rectangular prisms, to use the correct word, or little squares, if I was going
2:58 to be more colloquial. Come out and they're about this long. There's two
3:01 full layers. And with it, you can pack all your sweet gear. So, I got my road
3:05 mic, which I've been informed is not pronounced road because it's like a Danish word or something, but whatever.
3:10 Uh, so I got my road mic, got my FS700, got spot for my
3:15 lens, got spots for maybe a couple more lenses over here. So, this is what is
3:21 going to keep the camera safe, and I'm super super thrilled with
3:25 it. Seems like the kind of thing that uh
3:28 nothing can go wrong if you throw your camera in a Pelican. It's even
3:32 waterproof for like 30 minutes or something along those lines. So, that's
3:36 pretty cool. Uh, right. So, we're going to have a whole crew there. So, I'm
3:40 hoping to really sort of change the way that Lionus Tech Tips presents video.
3:45 So, not just uploading to YouTube, but I also want there to be a little bit of
3:49 accompanying text. Just sort of maybe some editorial that's not necessarily in
3:53 the video itself. Maybe some some, you know, pictures of close-ups or things
3:57 that we perhaps missed while we were filming the video. That's the kind of
4:00 thing that's really easy for us to be like, "Oh crap." You know, take a couple pictures, make sure that goes up with
4:04 the article. So, I'd love to get your feedback. Do you guys want to see a few
4:08 different things? Do you want to see like um sort I mean okay when I read a
4:13 review basically I read introduction conclusion and then I see if it won any
4:18 kind of award. So that's the concept. Do you guys want to see that? Just a little
4:21 text blurb then a video little text blurb and then like you know maybe some
4:26 kind of a rating in terms of value performance or or whatever other metrics
4:30 that you want to see. So, let's do some Twitter because I don't have a ton of
4:35 topics prepared and I especially don't have anyone to sit and entertain the
4:39 audience while I'm sort of going and doing other things. So, let's have some
4:44 interaction. Slick is sick, Zoomass, and I'm very sorry for that. For those of
4:48 you who have been telling me to kick him off the show, then you'll be pleased
4:51 that he's not here tonight. But that's very few of you. I think for the most
4:54 part, you guys enjoy Slick's
4:57 contributions. All right. Having
5:01 examined less than an hour. Oh, I'm sorry you can't make it, Edwin, but good
5:05 luck. Woke up to watch from Iceland. Awesome. Gotta love Pelican. Yes. Been
5:10 waiting six hours. See, I often see this. People are
5:15 sitting in Twitch like waiting for the live stream to start, like hours and
5:19 hours before it starts. Guys, it's at 900 p.m. my time every week. Although, I
5:23 will be changing the time soon. I've had a lot of people ask me about the times
5:27 for the live live show. Am I planning to change it? Yes, I'm planning to change
5:31 it. Um, sometime in the new year, it will change. Good question. Andrew R
5:37 asks, "Is there a difference between an 8pin EPS connector and an 8 pin PCI
5:42 Express connector? Are they interchangeable?" I would love to
5:45 address this by grabbing
5:49 myself. Not by grabbing myself, by grabbing a connector to show you guys
5:56 exactly what the difference is between them. So, let me just see if I can get
6:00 this test bench detachated here. Yeah,
6:05 there's a PCIe. Yeah, good. There's an EPS. So
6:09 EPS8 pin is often also referred to as just CPU 8 pin or even ATX8 pin which
6:15 isn't technically correct but I mean you can't stop people from using terminology
6:20 that they're more that they're more familiar with when it was first introduced uh in the P4 era. It was
6:26 called the uh the P4 connector as well. So that's another really common
6:30 terminology for it. So I'm going to show you guys exactly what the difference is
6:33 between these connectors. I hope the autofocus is okay on this camera. So,
6:37 uh, this guy right here, that is an 8pin
6:40 CPU. So, an 8 pin is just an evolution
6:43 of a four pin. And the four pin, uh,
6:46 there we go, is two 12vt wires, which are colorcoded, see, hold on, I'm going
6:51 to move that. Two 12vt wires, which are colorcoded yellow or on some power
6:56 supplies, they've removed the color coding just in favor of aesthetics. And
6:59 then two ground wires. So, those go out to your power supply. Those provide
7:04 power just to your CPU. That's all they
7:07 do. They do not go anywhere else. They do not share because this standard was
7:12 introduced when Intel was really pushing
7:16 the envelope in terms of how much heat output a CPU
7:21 uh was. Sorry, I'm having a really hard time putting this back. Yeah. How much
7:25 heat output CPUs were producing as well as how much power they were consuming.
7:30 So all of a sudden we needed this dedicated connector near the CPU socket
7:34 itself that ran power just to the CPU. PCI Express is a different standard. So
7:40 you can see the six pin PCIe which was the first connector we had for uh PCI
7:45 Express cards is three 12 volts and
7:49 three grounds. Okay. The Apin standard
7:53 doesn't actually add another circuit loop to it. It only adds two more ground
7:59 connectors. So, we are actually still relying, let's see if I can get it to
8:03 focus. See, two more ground connectors. We are actually still relying on those
8:07 three yellow ones there to provide one
8:10 side. And then we've got five grounds to carry. Like, I don't actually quite
8:15 understand how two more ground pins changes how much power, how much current
8:20 it can carry, but apparently somehow it does. So anyway, the point is no,
8:24 they're not the same because this has four 12 volts and four grounds and this
8:29 has three 12 volts and five grounds. They're also keyed differently. So what
8:34 I mean when I say keying is the shape of
8:38 the Here. Hold on. I'm going to see if I can uh see if I can get you guys a good
8:41 look at this. This is really important when you're putting together your computer because if you do this wrong,
8:45 it'll cause big problems for you. There we go. So, the actual shape of the
8:49 plastic housings around the pins are
8:52 different. And you can also see that the eight pin Oh, I'm probably talking
8:55 really loud. You can see that the eight pin here has a bridge between these two
8:59 that actually prevents it from being inserted into an 8 pin on the uh
9:05 motherboard. So, there you go. That is the difference. Good question between
9:09 EPS 8 pin and PCI Express 8 pin. I'm
9:13 going to jump up to the top just to make sure that uh there aren't any audio
9:17 issues or anything that I'm not aware of. Okay. I heard that the Noctua NF12s
9:23 are only good for push and not for pull. No, that's not true at all. A fan with
9:27 good static pressure has good static pressure. That's it. That means that
9:32 it's good at scooping air from the one side of it and it's good at pushing air
9:36 to the other side of it. What that person might have been thinking of is
9:40 that the F12s are optimized for directed
9:43 air flow, much like Silverstone Air Penetrator 121s. So, if you're using
9:48 them as a case fan, say for example, in the front of your case, and you want to
9:52 be cooling that video card that's like way over there, an F12 will be very
9:57 effective for pushing air towards that video card because it creates like a
10:01 funnel of air that moves in one direction without just being randomly
10:05 dispersed. So, they're excellent for pushing air, but that doesn't change the
10:09 fact that they're just a well optimized high-pressure fan, and they're great for
10:12 push or pull if you're using them on a heat sink or on a
10:16 radiator. Uh, oh, will you be doing more
10:19 audio related unboxings, something like HD800s or some speakers? I've done the
10:23 HD800s, believe it or not. Um, honestly,
10:28 the sort of price to performance that
10:31 comes along with those super premium audio products, I think it's wasted on
10:35 me a little bit. I mean, I was listening to Flax and I we had
10:38 HD555s, HD 595s, HD800's, as well as
10:43 some gaming headsets. And Slick and I were using the ASUS Essence One, which
10:47 is not a super high-end DACK or amp by any stretch of the imagination. I mean,
10:51 those will go into tens of thousands of dollars, guys. So, yes, it's like a $500
10:56 audio product, but it's not really
10:59 qualified to drive something like HD800's. Um, and I found that once you
11:05 get like HD555 to HD595 is noticeable,
11:09 but that was only about a $100 price delta back when those were current
11:13 products, where something like an HD800 costs several times what an HD595 was.
11:19 However, from a 555 to a 595 felt like
11:22 about the same kind of a jump as from a 595 to an 800. Hard to say whether
11:28 that's just us or whether that's correct. Um because we didn't really
11:32 have the kind of amp we'd need to drive it. But and neither of us really have
11:36 like golden ears. But um I mean I appreciate good audio, but something
11:41 like an 800 is pretty pretty overkill for me. I also found them a little bit
11:45 um almost too big on my head. So, that's
11:49 just a minor complaint, I guess. But if I was paying, you know, that much for
11:52 headphones, couple grand for headphones, I'd want them to feel like awesome,
11:56 comfortable. Uh, what camera am I using for the live stream? Please tweet back
12:01 because I've got to go now. Test
12:04 tester. All right, fine. Why not? X A
12:10 10. Oh, right. That won't work. Oh, you
12:15 know what? Sorry, man. That's not going to work because I have my uh I have my
12:20 number my number signs bound to my different camera stuff. So, yeah, that
12:24 won't work. All right. Opinions on OCZT power supplies. Have you had much
12:28 experience with them? Yeah, I've used one on a test bench for a while. Uh nothing bad to say. I mean, they're an
12:32 80 plus bronze fully modular power supply. They're a good deal. I'm here,
12:37 says Aaron. Hello, Aaron. Lionus, have you heard about the AMD 7870 XT?
12:47 No. What are your thoughts on the Digital Storm Bolt, especially compared
12:51 to the Falcon Northwest Tiki? Uh, neither of them seems particularly
12:55 relevant because these days I really can't think of a good reason to buy a
12:59 boutique machine. Um, what are you I
13:03 guess here's the question. You We have to do like a PC buyer guide
13:08 at some point, I think. you know, just like an ultimate bible on buying a PC
13:13 and sort of teach people how to do the analysis of what they're paying for with
13:18 someone like a a boutique builder like a Falcon Northwest. Okay. If you're going
13:22 to pay them to paint your case and you really like the design and you're going
13:26 to do that stuff, okay, okay, you want
13:29 to drop a couple G's on a case, you know what? Fine. Fine. That's fine. Now, my
13:34 TJ07 at this point, and those of you who are going to tell me to change it, I'm
13:38 not changing it, was a present from my wife, and it's my favorite case ever. I
13:41 don't want a different case. Here, right there, for those of you telling me, "Get
13:46 a TJ11."
13:51 That is a TJ11. I don't care. I'm not
13:55 using it. I'm using the TJ07. Um, so anyway, yeah, if you really like their
13:59 case and you really really want them to paint it, you love their design, then
14:04 that's cool. That's fine. But if you're just getting them to do like a normal
14:09 computer, why what do they do that and I
14:12 mean, yeah, I I work at NCIX and that's all fine, so obviously I'm a little
14:17 biased, but what do they do that someone like NCIX doesn't for 50 bucks and why
14:23 are they charging you an extra $500 to $800 for it? I mean, even someone like
14:26 Main Gear, who I'd hardly consider to be boutique, like they're they're a system
14:30 integrator and they build like great gaming systems and all that stuff, but I
14:35 mean, they're not, you know, running with guys like, you know, formerly
14:38 Voodoo or or Falcon. Like, let's just be
14:41 honest with ourselves. Um, even Main Gear, I think back when we launched one
14:45 of our PC systems, I compared the price for the exact same spec just for LS and
14:50 I think it was about a $600, $700 difference. I'm like, where is this
14:54 money going? I don't understand. Building a computer is not rocket science. Um, I've even had people I mean
14:59 this same thing. I've had people ask me, "Linus, will you build my computer for
15:03 me?" And I told the guy something ridiculous like uh $500 or $300 or
15:08 something for me to build it. And uh he's like, "Okay." I'm like, "What?
15:12 What? Why? I've done guides. I've shown
15:15 you guys how to build your own computers. Um, I mean here, just for the
15:19 sake of making sure that I'm not, you know, completely, you know, missing the point
15:23 of all this, I'll I'll look up these computers, but I suspect they're just
15:26 sort of like kind of neat, keen, small form
15:30 factor machines or something like that.
15:33 Uh, Falcon uses uh often
15:37 custom Silverstone cases, so it's
15:41 probably like a customized TJO or SGO3
15:45 or whatever it's called. I don't remember. Something 03 FTO3 or something
15:49 like that. This is just my guess. Oh no. What is this thing? 4 in wide. Something
15:54 something. The world's most powerful micro tower. Yeah, it's one of the best
15:58 boutique computers on the market today. Here, you guys can uh you guys can see
16:01 what I'm seeing here if you want. We are researching before we before we go on a
16:07 tirade about boutique builders and how it's pointless. So, what can you put in
16:11 here? GTX. What? GeForce GTX 6 series
16:16 graphics card.
16:19 Uh, okay. What What GeForce GTX 6 series
16:22 graphics card? Build your Tiki. Doesn't say. My
16:28 guess would be they could probably cram a 670 in there. I mean, I guess I still
16:32 just don't see the point. Build yourself an FTO3
16:36 mini and paint
16:40 it. I can't even find. Oh, here we go. Configure a tiki. Let's shop together,
16:44 shall we? Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Configure a
16:50 falcon. Sure. I met the owner of Falcon last
16:55 year, actually. Super nice guy, in case anyone
17:01 cares. There we go. World's most powerful micro tower. Configure a tiki.
17:06 So, at least these guys have a custom chassis going for them, which a lot of
17:09 those builder guys don't. What do we want for this thing? 1,700 bucks. And
17:15 we've got, what do we have so far? We have a chassis. We have a chassis logo
17:19 insert. We have a chassis base. We have a 450 watt SFX power supply. So, that's
17:23 that Silverstone power supply. So, you want to price this out. Go ahead. Price
17:26 it out. Silverstone power supply. PAZ77i. Oh, okay. Well, we need a 3570K
17:32 at the very least. How do I change it? Yeah. Add component. There we go. 56
17:37 bucks. Wow. Their builder has gotten a lot more advanced since the last time I
17:41 looked at it. Okay, they got a liquid cooler in there. They got some 2x4 gig.
17:47 How much do they want? Seriously, they want $78. Okay, this is where See, this
17:51 is where you run into trouble.
17:56 ncix.com. Okay, let's find out what a 2 by8 gig memory kit actually costs. So,
18:01 what is this? 1866 memory. Not that it
18:04 matters. It really doesn't make that much difference to performance. But just for lols. Oh no, I can't type in
18:09 numbers. Oh wait, I can use this one.
18:13 1866. Uh, and that was a
18:23 60. Wrong scene. There we go. Sorry
18:26 guys. It's really inconvenient having my number keys bound this way. So a 16 gig
18:32 1866 kit costs what? I don't know, 97
18:35 bucks, 95 bucks, 120 bucks. So, well,
18:41 okay. Okay, that's not so bad. That's not as bad as I
18:44 thought. Who knows? I might be able Oh, GTX 650. I might be a believer by the
18:50 end of this. $300 additional for a 670. Okay, that
18:55 doesn't look that good.
19:00 And of course, I hate doing this.
19:07 670. Yeah. Okay. So, you can get a 670 for like
19:10 $289.99. So, there's a bit of margin there. Sound cards probably on board.
19:15 Yeah. Networking's on board. So, I guess
19:18 guys, it comes down to personal choice. Would I pay more for something like a
19:24 Tiki? Probably not. I mean, there's shuttles out there. There's FTO3 Mini
19:29 out there. There's a lot of different solutions out there. Something like a
19:33 Bit Phoenix Prodigy isn't as small, but has a lot of cool factor going for it as
19:37 well. But I'm not the intended audience. So, if you have an appreciation for
19:43 guys, make no mistake, the amount of work and the amount of money that it
19:47 takes to produce a custom chassis as a system builder, if you have an
19:51 appreciation for that and it's like not easy, then go for it. you know, you want
19:55 something that's a prestige piece, then go for it. Otherwise, personally, I'd
20:00 build my own machine. Um, as for the digital storm bolt, I don't know.
20:04 Depends how bored you guys are of this topic, but I could probably at least
20:07 find out what it is. Digital. Hate this keyboard. Well, I
20:13 don't hate this keyboard. It's just not
20:18 ideal. Digital storm bolt.
20:23 Enter. Yeah, I meant digital stormbbolt. Got my got my typo going on
20:29 here. Okay, so that is what the heck is this
20:37 thing? Okay, that's kind of neat machine as
20:42 well. I don't know. I don't know. What do you want me to
20:48 say? What kind of video card do they have in here? as long as they've got
20:52 options to put decent video cards in. I mean, that's something else to consider, guys, too. Is if you configure your own
20:58 Oh, they've got a 650 Ti in there. So, yeah, that's not bad. What kind of
21:02 upgrade options do they
21:06 have? Where are the upgrade options? I don't know. Okay, not going
21:10 to worry about this too much anymore because I'm bored.
21:14 Um, yeah, if you like it, buy it, I
21:18 guess. Moving right along. Oh, I think
21:21 I've got my uh camera pointed a little high
21:27 here. Yeah, I'm impressed actually. Both of those machines look really cool. Do
21:31 you wish Canada and the US had better travel relations on border checks like
21:34 the EU? Um, no. I don't know. Doesn't seem like
21:40 that big of a deal to show a
21:43 passport. Is this moving? I think it's
21:46 moving. No wonder I'm having trouble.
21:50 All right. Is it true that the most expensive graphics card is not the best
21:53 graphics card? Good question. It is true that the most expensive graphics
21:57 solution is not necessarily the best graphics solution. GTX 690 quad SLI is
22:03 the most expensive graphics card solution uh before you start getting
22:07 into sort of quad 680s. Um, however, I
22:11 would say that defining something as best is not as simple as does it perform
22:16 the best because it will perform the best in many scenarios, but there will
22:20 be ones where its performance consistency is not very good because
22:24 quad SLI doesn't scale the same way that a single card or dual SLI or even triple
22:29 SLI does. So, if I were to look at it
22:32 from a perspective of, okay, am I getting the best gaming solution there,
22:37 gaming solution by getting uh quad 680s
22:40 or dual 690s? I would go, well, hard to
22:43 say because it's going to get hot. It's going to potentially get loud,
22:48 especially if you have fans sandwiched up against each other. Uh, it's not
22:51 necessarily going to scale in every game or every scenario. And you might even
22:55 run into weird bugs where you got to turn your setting, turn your SLI off in
23:00 order to even get your machine to run a particular game, especially weird
23:04 obscure stuff that doesn't really get the same kind of QA put into it as other
23:08 things. So, I would say instead of buying four 680s, which will give you
23:12 the highest FPS, I would do something like buy two 680s and then like a wicked
23:18 sound card and an awesome like, I don't
23:21 know, something else RAID card and throw some SSDs on it. I mean, there's lots of
23:25 better things you can spend your budget on than three or four graphics cards.
23:29 So, there you have it. My take on that
23:32 question. Does the speed of the pump affect the performance of a water
23:36 cooling loop? Uh, yes, but not as much as most people seem to think. Uh it
23:41 does yeah it does affect the flow rate having the pump spin faster and the
23:45 water moves faster but once you're past a certain point uh the returns that you
23:50 get for speeding up the water diminish very very very sharply. I mean in a
23:55 custom loop running dual graphics cards and a CPU, two radiators using a D5. So
24:02 with it cranked to five I'm within one degree of turning it all the way down to
24:06 one. And I would say for the noise
24:09 difference, I'll take that. I'll throw away that one degree. No problem.
24:14 Lionus, I'm the guy who wanted the autograph with the Razer Kraken Pros.
24:17 Hi, Liam. That is a great profile picture you've got yourself there. My
24:22 friend bought an alien wear a laptop for about 2,000. It was
24:28 3,000. It's 16 gigs fast. We shouldn't
24:31 laugh at them. We should help them. Any comments on the 840 Pro SSD? No unboxing
24:37 um right now. I'm hoping to get my hands on one soon. Benchmarks wise, there's
24:41 lots of benchmarks out there. It's basically the ruler of the roost. It's
24:44 right up there with the OCZ Vector. Those two would be kind of the the kings
24:47 of the castle right now. So that uh that's pretty much my take on
24:52 it on it. Best
24:56 nonommon Cherry MX switch. I don't know.
24:59 That's a very strange question, Bob. I don't understand why you'd ask that
25:02 question. Um I actually haven't used clears. I haven't used uh anything other
25:07 than blue, brown, red, black. So, sorry.
25:11 I guess I can't really answer that one. Talk about the Sandia cooler.
25:16 Sandia cooler. So, this is something that people are pretty excited about
25:19 right about now. So, I'm going to go ahead and show those of you who aren't
25:23 familiar with it. Sandia
25:26 cooler. There we go. Here we go. This is
25:30 what this is all about. So, it's a cooler that instead of spinning a fan on
25:34 top of a heat sink, takes a heat sink and spins it around like a fan. So,
25:41 promises 30 times better CPU cooling, blah blah blah. They're making a lot of
25:45 claims about it. Apparently, the way that the top heatsink spins is by having
25:50 a like a micro micro thin layer, like a
25:54 cushion of air between this bottom layer here that interfac
25:58 uh interfaces directly with the CPU and
26:01 then this spinning part on top that still allows optimal heat transfer as if
26:06 it wasn't even there. And then because of the way the blades are optimized,
26:11 they throw air out. I believe it spins
26:15 this way. So, it chucks air out of the heat
26:19 sink, making it very, very, very efficient or something. Um, I've had a
26:24 lot of people ask me about what I think about it. There you go. Sandia cooler.
26:29 Hold on, let me turn that volume down. Oh, yeah. This should be
26:33 okay. Oh, it's a long video. Boo. Long
26:37 video. Boo. Where is it running?
26:42 show us up close. Okay, whatever. Forget
26:46 that video. Um, so people have asked me about it a lot.
26:50 I know that there's one PC heatsink guy that's licensed it already, so we're
26:54 going to see a product based on this, but I guess Yeah, here we go. It spins
27:00 at just 2,000 RPM. Only 2,000 RPM, you say? Why,
27:06 that'll be intolerably loud. 2,000 RPM
27:10 isn't quiet. I mean, it's possible that
27:14 because of the way the air is moving, there's going to be less of a whoo to
27:17 it, but I don't think I've heard a 2,000 RPM motor that doesn't have a
27:21 significant wind to it. So, yeah, if they can and I mean that and I mean,
27:25 we're talking a different kind of motor when you're spinning around a piece of metal. So, it'll have to actually have
27:30 some torque to it versus if you're turning plastic. So, I'm expecting there
27:34 to be a mechanical like a wind to it.
27:37 Um, so yeah, it can cool better all at once. It's not going to cool better than
27:41 water. I can tell you that now. And I'm already looking at it going, "What do you mean 30 times better than air?" How
27:46 do you define 30 times better? I mean, we've already got air cooling heat sinks
27:50 that'll remove 130 watts of heat from a Are you going to You're telling me we're
27:54 going to remove 4,000 watts of heat from a CPU
27:58 socket? So, yeah, I will believe it when
28:01 I see it. That is my approach to the Sandia cooler. Great. Looks good. Good.
28:07 Good in theory. Um, but let's see how the actual products do because we've
28:11 seen this time and time again. Remember Lucid Logic's Hydra? How we were gonna
28:16 SLI GeForce cards with Radeon cards and
28:19 we were going to throw five cards in one system and they were all going to work together and it was going to be like
28:23 magic. Holy crap. Yeah, that that didn't
28:26 work. 3D Mark was I think the only application that it ever properly worked
28:30 in. So, see how it goes. First time
28:34 watching live. I'm glad to hear that you are tuned in. I can see that the Linus
28:38 Tech Tips community will be awesome just by being in the Twitch chat. That is
28:41 actually one of the reasons we fasttracked having a forum at all because the Twitch chat is so active and
28:46 there's such good conversation going on in there. Uh normal unboxings should be
28:50 normal. I don't know. I I don't remember what you're commenting about, Ryan. I'm
28:54 sorry. Happy to moderate the stream chat. Been here for five hours chatting
28:58 with cool peeps. Absolutely. Stream countdown on the
29:02 forum. Yep. Yeah, that's not a bad It's not a bad idea at all. I noticed you
29:06 guys are doing awesome on the whole liking videos and encouraging other
29:10 people to like videos. Keep it up. Um the I think it makes a difference. I
29:16 think it'll take a bit of a longer term sort of uh I think it'll take a bit of a
29:21 longer term approach to find out how well it's working. I noticed that
29:24 there's still a lot of videos that some of you are selectively liking or not
29:28 liking. I noticed uh uh the one with the cat and the baby did like way better
29:33 than uh than one of the other ones that I did that was actually a lot more work.
29:36 The heat sink roundup using my new uh my
29:39 new test bench here. So yeah, I mean keep it up. Do your best
29:44 with it, guys. I think it helps. So there you go. For some reason it's black
29:49 for me the live stream flash player. I
29:52 don't know. How do I cheer up my friend who got a new graphics card but found
29:56 out he has a 280 watt power supply. I don't know. It is Christmas. You could
29:59 get him a new power supply and it doesn't
30:03 suck. All right. Totally stopped scripting to watch. Excellent. And I
30:08 can't figure out how to move this around. All right. Let's do some more
30:12 Q&A. See what Oh my goodness. 254 new
30:15 interactions. Good morning from Denmark indeed. What do you think of the Cooler
30:18 Master Quickfire TK keyboard with the arrow keys and number pad integrated? I
30:22 actually did an unboxing of this one uh last week, two weeks ago. Really like
30:26 it. Very cool layout for those of you who haven't seen it. I'll go grab it cuz
30:29 it's right
30:34 here. Here we go. Oh, the this was
30:37 sitting with it. These are the Twinkies that uh Slick and I ate last week as
30:42 part of our live stream because I had a viewer send those in. So, we got a key
30:47 remover. got some covering on it. This is a
30:52 really unique keyboard because the first time I showed it to Slick, he wasn't
30:55 familiar with the product already and he was like, "Oh yeah, it's a 10 keyless."
30:59 It is not a 10 keyless. See, it actually has a full number pad and then you just
31:05 switch modes. So there's number keys here. You got like your delete key, your
31:09 insert, your page up, your page down, and all that stuff here. So you actually
31:12 switch between number pad and then extension of normal keyboard. So, it
31:16 ends up being a super compact, super awesome, super brightly back lit
31:21 mechanical keyboard. This is the TK Blue. So, this has a blue backlight and
31:24 blue switches, but it's available with brown or red switches as well in white
31:29 or red back lights. Um, I think it's awesome. I think it's outstanding. I
31:33 don't know if I would use it myself because I'm not space constrained, but
31:37 it's especially useful for people who don't have a lot of room at their
31:41 computer and they want to still have a number pad because I don't know about
31:44 you guys, but I use a number pad every day. Every single day, I cannot live
31:48 without a number pad on my keyboard. Uh unless I had like a little standalone
31:53 keyboard and
31:57 um where was I going with that? Number pads are good, right? But because I'm
32:02 not space constrained, then I'll just assume have a normal keyboard with a
32:05 number pad. So, I think I'll stick with my Zyo 60.
32:10 But if you want to save some room on your desk, the TK is a perfect option in
32:16 my opinion because you still get your number pad, which matters to me, as you
32:21 guys may or may not have noticed. Watching from Norway.
32:26 Yes. Uh, hey Lionus. My friend's PC is
32:30 turning on but not powering the monitor and half of the fans don't work. It's a
32:33 fresh build. What do uh could be video card, could be memory. Basically, what
32:37 you've got there is a no post situation. So, if you search on YouTube for no post
32:42 diagnosis, I have a video all about it.
32:45 First time watching in the UK, but my dad woke me up by snoring trying to type
32:48 quietly on Cherry MX Blues. Good luck with that, sir. Is Corsair Link worth
32:53 it? Um, I was talking to the Russian about
32:56 it and they were doing some work with Corsair Link. I actually have a Corsair
32:59 link around here somewhere. I haven't tried the actual link module. Uh the
33:04 Corsair link software, just the software component that you use with something
33:07 like an H80i or an H100i is pretty neat.
33:11 It's fairly robust. It's I mean, bear in mind, guys, this is something that's
33:15 been in uh
33:20 in production software, whatever. They've been working on it for over two
33:25 years back when Coollet was still doing their own thing. Uh they were working on
33:30 I think they were calling it something else, but they showed this off at CES
33:33 two years ago in their booth and then when Corsair went exclusive with the
33:38 Coollet coolers and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. They had some
33:41 arrangement. So now Corsair I think inherited a lot of that work that Koolit
33:44 had already done. So this has been a in development. That's what I was thinking of. Has been in development for years.
33:49 So, it's very mature compared to um well, a lot of the other solutions
33:53 out there, even something like an MCU T balancer, there's a lot more that goes
33:58 into things that seem simple like fan
34:01 control than you would imagine because there's all these different like even
34:05 something like something like PWM. There's all these different
34:09 implementations of PWM, which is basically instead of undervolting the
34:14 fan, running it at 12 volts, but doing it in bursts so that it doesn't spin as
34:18 fast. Okay, so PWM seems simple, right? No, no, no. So, that can cause all kinds
34:23 of issues. It can cause whining in the fans. It can cause fans to die. It can
34:27 cause it to just generally not work. It can cause all kinds of issues. So,
34:31 there's a lot that goes into it and Link is pretty mature, but does have trouble
34:35 with third party fans sometimes. And I
34:39 don't remember necessarily where I was going with that. Is it worth it? I don't
34:44 know. If you have an H100i, then install it. If you don't have an H100i, then
34:47 it's probably not going to do a whole lot for you. I came in late where Slick.
34:50 Slick be sick. Yo, I currently have an X79 as Extreme 9. Should I get a 3820
34:55 now and wait for a new generation or get the 3930K? The only reason you're going
35:00 to benefit from a 3930K is if you're doing serious 3D work, not 3D games, 3D
35:05 work, or if you're doing serious like video editing, photo edit, even photo
35:09 editing. I mean, come on. Even like serious video editing or after effects
35:13 work. Um, other than that, quad core is fine. Trust me. Just joined after
35:19 getting home from work yet. The form will be done within probably about a
35:22 week and a half. It'll be up. I don't know if it'll be up in its final form,
35:26 but it'll be up. Nope. No plans for 680 amp edition unboxing. Are there any
35:30 MiniATX motherboards that have Thunderbolt ports yet? I believe
35:33 Gigabyte has one, but it's not available in North
35:37 America. What would you notice more? What would I notice more? An SSD or a
35:41 new sound card? Oo, that's tough. I'd go
35:45 SSD. Have you heard about photonic computing and excited about the
35:49 possibility of clock speeds near the speed of light? Yeah, we're a long way away from there, though. I'll get
35:53 excited when I can actually buy one. Should I get an i5 or an i7 for
36:00 Autodesk? You know what? I don't have enough experience with CAD professional
36:04 applications to really make a judgment there. If the GPU is doing a lot of the
36:08 work, then go for the i5. If CPU still benefits and if it's heavily threaded,
36:12 then go for an i7. Um, yeah, it's really
36:15 not that much more expensive for the i7, especially if you're building a
36:18 workstation that's already going to have a high-end Quadro in it or whatever else. So, got to be your judgment call
36:23 from that for that one. Jordan asks if I bought anything from the Steam sale. No,
36:27 I have not. Although, I do have a copy of Far Cry 3 with my name on it that I'm
36:31 pretty excited to play. Next personal rig update. Actually, I can give you
36:34 guys an update now
36:40 because it shipped today. So, hopefully
36:43 I'll get it back from Mountain Mods sometime early in the new year and I'll
36:46 get that built up. I'm super super excited to get it put back together. Oh,
36:50 apparently the motor on the San Die cooler turns off after it starts. Well,
36:55 I'm very very interesting or very interesting, very interested to see how
36:59 that works. Again, I will believe it when I see it. I'll believe it when
37:03 they've had one running for, you know, three years in a machine, you know, at
37:06 whatever weird angle. And uh I mean I guess one thing I kind of worry about is
37:10 when you have like a a stray wire that comes loose from a bundle and gets stuck
37:14 in a fan. It kind of goes and then the fan might stop and then your CPU over I
37:19 mean what if this thing hits it spinning around at 2,000 RPM made of a even a
37:24 light metal like aluminum? I mean what's that going to do to like a wire? I don't
37:28 know. I I not I'm not saying progress is
37:31 bad. I'm just skeptical until until I'm
37:35 proven otherwise. NFF12 or Silverstone air penetrator. Either is a good choice,
37:39 but make sure you're getting the AP-121s. There are air penetrators that
37:42 are not as optimized for heat sink use. What do you think about the SP2500s?
37:46 They're awesome. I'm using SP2500s myself. Love them. Two thumbs
37:52 up. Noise Nazi. Well, yes. Who does the
37:56 awesome NCL drawings? Uh, Tom. Tom does the awesome NCI XL drawings. He was
38:01 actually featured on one of the early episodes of NetLink Weekly, and he talks about it a fair bit.
38:06 23 minutes late. I was Oh, you were 23 minutes late. Yay, UK. Um, does NX sell
38:12 most PCs online or in store for people that can't buy
38:15 online? Uh, well, they sell lots of PCs online and in
38:21 store. Watching your live stream from the Philippines. Yay. Hi, Philippines.
38:26 Am I going to do an unboxing of the NZXT Kraken? Yes, it's already in the mail.
38:30 So, as soon as that arrives, I will not only unbox it,
38:34 but I will also be putting it in the
38:37 standardized this guy heatsink testing rig
38:41 with Noctua NF A14 fans because it is a
38:46 140 mm radiator. However, I got to spend some time with the A14s and the F12s
38:51 kind of, you know, fine-tuning the old ear and deciding what RPM I can run
38:56 these at that they'll be the same sound level as the F12s because that that my
39:03 friends is the point for me at a consistent sound level with optimized
39:08 fans. In this case, those are very radiator and heat sink
39:11 optimized. What is the best cooler? Because that way instead of measuring
39:15 the efficiency of whatever fan happens to come on whatever heat sink and
39:20 they're all running at different RPMs with different pressures etc etc etc
39:23 different noise levels we will know which heat sink is the best heat sink
39:29 with a proper fan at a noise layout level that everyone will find palatable.
39:33 And I know some of you don't care and that's fine. I accept that. But uh I
39:37 just don't think computers need to be loud. In fact, I had one person seem to
39:40 get really upset on the uh on the video where I was saying there's no need to
39:45 have a loud computer because he was, you know, those those fans are 20 bucks
39:49 each. Like they're not cheap. You can get cheaper quiet fans. Okay, you don't
39:53 have to buy $20 fans, but those are awesome. Um cuz he was like, "Well, I
39:57 can't afford to have a quiet computer." What do you mean you can't afford to have a quiet computer?
40:02 Here. Where are they?
40:08 like whatever component you bought, I guarantee you there's one that costs the
40:12 same that's quiet. So, there's that. You
40:15 know, whatever case you bought that has wind turbine fans in it, you could have
40:19 bought something quiet. And these cost like pennies. These are low-noise
40:22 adapters. It's just an inline resistor. Heck, if you want to be, you know,
40:27 creative, you can just go buy resistors. Here's the color coding. Go buy them at
40:31 the local Radio Shack or equivalent. There you go. Gold, black, blue, green.
40:35 and install them in line with your fans. Boom. Quiet quiet PC for like less than
40:41 five bucks. So, there you go. It's not about spending a bunch of money on
40:45 having a quiet computer. It's about there's no reason to have a loud computer. I play from my couch at 2 and
40:50 a half meters from my monitor. Do you have a great keyboard mouse suggestion? Not really. Um although there's
40:55 something really cool that I have coming. It's like a couch couch gaming
40:59 thing. I'm going to see if I can uh see if I can find this
41:03 couch gaming table thing. Crap. There's one.
41:10 There's one being sent. Couch stand. How do you guys blah blah blah shiny hacks
41:16 gaming on your couch or sofa? Ah
41:19 man. Let me shoot. I don't remember what it's called, but it's from a smaller
41:24 company in the UK and it's like just
41:27 faking awesome. It's like a bean baggy thing that sits on your on your lap. Um,
41:33 honestly, if I was gaming from the couch, I'd still prefer wired if I can
41:36 get away with it. So, I'd just go with something like a USB
41:40 extension, you know. Uh, what fan controller would you
41:45 recommend? I use a T- balancer. Other than that, I don't really recommend fan
41:48 controllers. I recommend just permanently quieting things down. uh
41:52 using the aforementioned resistors or
41:55 yeah, fan controllers are kind of ridiculous. Like, think about this for a
42:00 second, right? Okay, here to test if you would use a fan controller or not, take
42:05 something like uh like a little action figure or something, put them on top of
42:09 your computer case, and then every time you launch a game, reach down and put
42:13 him on his side. And then every time you close a game, reach down and stand him
42:17 up. See how long that lasts. see how long you can do it for before you forget
42:21 or don't care. That is why fan controllers are stupid because nobody
42:26 actually does that. Uh the temperature sensors that they use are totally
42:29 useless because it's not like you can put them uh you know next to the CPU die
42:33 anymore like we used to do back in the socket a days. Um, so you can't even
42:37 measure any useful temperatures with them unless you have a software
42:40 controlled one, something like Corsair Link or something like an MQTT balancer
42:44 where everything's automated and you got fan curves and temperatures and all that
42:47 kind of stuff, then it's just pointless. Turn down your fans, have a quiet
42:50 computer every day, all day. All right, bought a system today.
42:55 Only ordered the case from NCIX. I forgot and ordered everything from
43:01 Newegg. Going crazy. Cannot decide between a 7970 or 670. There's a $10
43:06 difference. You know what? They're both great options. Flip a coin. Uh 7970 is
43:11 what I would probably recommend for a surround gaming setup, whereas a 670 is
43:15 way better for 3D. So, decide which of those is more important to you. Intake
43:19 or exhaust at the top of the case? Usually exhaust. Friend with a Mac Pro.
43:24 And what is the point of 96 gigs of RAM? That is so overkill. You know what? I
43:28 would have said the same thing about something like 16 or 32 gigs of RAM. So,
43:33 there's a couple things you can do until recently. There's a couple of things you
43:36 can do. Number one is you can set up a RAM disc. Okay? So, you can install some
43:41 stuff on there. You can use as a scratch disc when you're video editing or whatever else. Number two is I had no
43:46 idea how he pulled this off, but Diesel managed to just destroy the uh the
43:52 memory utilization of a system with 16 gigs of memory. like he only had like
43:55 two things open, but he had like some color correction uh Da Vinci Resolve
44:00 thing and then he had Premier going and then like he wanted to do something else
44:04 and he checked his memory. He was like, "Oh, I got to close something before I can open anything else." I was like,
44:07 "Okay, dude. I'll get you 32 gigs of RAM for the editing machine." So, there you
44:12 go. For serious serious professional work, you
44:15 can use more RAM. Another use is virtual machines. If you want to run VMs, you'll
44:20 need tons and tons of RAM. I am an OS10 user. I'm sorry to hear
44:27 that. Uh I love watching your videos. I'm happy to hear that. Why do you
44:32 prefer PC over OS 10? I like both platforms, but I prefer OS 10. Uh one
44:36 word
44:39 games right now there's nothing for OS 10. I mean, I can play some uh some Bop,
44:45 you know, Mac games. I can play games on
44:49 my iPad, but if I actually want to like
44:53 sit down at my computer and veg and play a shooter, there's there's nothing. I
44:57 mean, I this sort of leads into
45:00 something that I find very sad. Like, I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't
45:04 do more to try to salvage the PC as a gaming platform. Like I understand Xbox
45:08 is great and licensing fees are awesome and like consoles are great because you
45:13 can sell what is essentially, you know, a hundred bucks worth of three
45:18 generation, four, five generation old stuff for, you know, 300 bucks. I I
45:22 understand that's all cool. That's fantastic. Good for you. But understand
45:26 that the only thing differentiating your platform from Linux and OS 10, from some
45:31 kind of Apple OS, is gaming and gamers and tweakability. And the more they get
45:37 away from that, the more I worry about what the future of something like
45:41 Windows is. So yeah, right now that's a big part of
45:45 the reason. Also, I just find it phenomenally difficult to use. Every time I sit down at a at an OS 10
45:50 computer, I managed to break something within about 3 seconds. So, I don't
45:55 know. It's just like just stupid stuff like dragging discs to the trash can to
45:59 eject them. It's like that was handicapped back when they were doing it
46:03 10 years ago. It's still handicapped now, but for whatever reason, they
46:06 haven't changed it, so I don't quite get it. Um, what do you think of using RAM
46:11 as a hard drive caching? Um, fantasy cache looks really neat. Haven't tried
46:15 it yet. Once I get my personal rig up and running, I actually really want to
46:18 get that going. So, I have 64 gigs of RAM that I'm going to put in my
46:21 motherboard. Then I have my 900 gigs or whatever of RAID zero SSDs. I'm going to
46:26 run fancy cache. Maybe throw 48 gigs of that memory because I I don't I'm just
46:31 playing games. I'm not going to need anything for video editing or anything
46:34 like that. Nothing fancy. So, I'll throw 48 gigs of RAM cache at the almost 1 TB
46:41 SSD in RAID zero and I'll see what kind of like crazy performance I can get.
46:45 I'll see if I notice it more than anything else. Would you ever add a sound card to
46:50 your water loop?
46:53 Nope. Uh, tuning in live from Belgium. Yay. How's the litter quitter going?
46:58 Oh, litter quitter's good. We had another accident today. It had been like
47:02 3 days since the last one and I'm super mad about this. I had the door open into
47:06 the garage where I had their old litter box uh while I was preparing for the
47:11 live stream. This is actually like I know I'm always late, but seriously
47:16 guys, there's always a legit reason. So, I was chasing the cat out of here
47:20 because he snuck into the garage and
47:23 found where I stashed his litter box and dumped it all over the floor. Freaking
47:30 sweet. So, I get to clean that up later. Oh, shoot. I just changed the uh Oops.
47:35 Uh oh. I don't know how that affected the stream. There we go. I was trying to
47:38 just change the game there so you guys could see the spilled litter. That makes
47:42 my life good. So, uh so yeah, not impressed. Bad cat. That was
47:47 Rocket. Super super annoyed with him.
47:50 But, uh yeah, other than that, good. I was
47:54 hoping based on that we hadn't had any accidents for a few days that we'd be
47:58 good to go to move to the next stage, but it looks like that's not
48:02 going to happen quite yet. Not quite
48:05 yet. Uh, no experience with the non-
48:08 cherry ones. I'm sort of mainstream that way when it comes to mechanical
48:12 keyboards. Uh, Razer Black Widow. I would probably go for the Ultimate. I
48:16 don't think the Black Widow actually uses Cherry MX switches. Speaking of me
48:19 only really knowing Cherry MX switches. Okay, more about more about more about
48:25 uh test my first use of Twitter. Hi, Stephen. Do you think new games will
48:29 start using less CPU and more GPU power? We've already seen that. Um, personally,
48:32 I'd like to see games use more CPU power. I mean, I almost everyone has a
48:37 dual core at this point. I think a lot of particularly gamers and enthusiasts
48:41 are moving to quad cores. Um, why don't
48:44 we have a seriously physics-based game where there's an entire CPU dedicated to
48:49 just making everything a simulation as opposed to pre-rendered or whatever
48:53 else? I mean, yeah, it's consoles holding us back,
48:57 but yeah, I'm that's what I'm more excited about than anything else. That
49:00 and virtual reality. Um, we talked about it uh either last week or the week
49:04 before, but there's a VR headset coming that looks really really cool. So, I
49:08 mean, I think gaming's in a bit of a funk right now for the last few years,
49:14 but I'm yeah, really excited about some of the things that are coming. 3D, not
49:18 so much, but VR and more physics. Super
49:21 excited about a 670 for the win. I have
49:25 enough money to get a second 670 or TJ7B. What should I get? You know what?
49:29 I can't make that decision for you. Um, if you feel like it's worthwhile
49:33 investing in an expensive case, then that is the call that you have to make.
49:37 Personally, why did I buy a TJ7? I bought a TJ07. Well, my wife, now now
49:42 wife, then girlfriend bought it for me. Uh because I really wanted one and it
49:47 was very, very generous of her. Why did I get a TJ7? Because I knew that 5 years
49:51 down the line, I would still be using that chassis. I wouldn't want anything
49:55 different. I knew that already. I still think it's the best chassis on the
49:59 market once you do the appropriate mods to make it a little bit more functional.
50:04 Um, so if you're willing to commit to a
50:08 case that way, then go for it. Otherwise, I find it very hard to
50:12 justify spending so much on a case when there are great options like something
50:15 like a Define R4 window that don't cost nearly as much. I mean, you could buy a
50:19 Defin R4 window, save a pennies from a couple, you know, one more paycheck and
50:23 buy yourself both as opposed to buying something like a TJ07. So, it is
50:27 definitely a niche part. Um, and it's
50:31 totally up to you. whether something you want to do that.
50:37 Chase asks if I've decided to stream the assembly of my rig. I might, I might not
50:40 because it's probably going to take me something like yeah 8 to 10 hours
50:44 straight because I'll be making some custom wires and cables. I'll be
50:48 splicing some stuff, sleeving some stuff at the last minute as I go. So, I
50:52 haven't really decided if it makes sense, but if you guys like the idea, then let me know and uh and I'll think
50:56 about it. I live in Quebec and there's no places to try keyboards. Any tips?
51:01 because I'm looking for a switch to type and game. Get browns. Browns or blacks
51:05 are good bets. Uh, personally, I like blues for gaming. I got no problem with
51:09 that. Um, they're all good. Mechanical is just better than membrane in every
51:13 possible way. I would like to use static link aggregation. Could you tell me more
51:17 about it and how to set it up with your router? Uh, it's not a router feature.
51:21 It's actually a switch feature. So, if you don't have a managed switch of some
51:26 sort that supports LCP, then you aren't doing that.
51:31 Also, it probably won't really matter because here's something to understand
51:35 about link aggregation that I didn't when I first got started with the the
51:39 quad gigabit
51:42 uh nit cards. I thought I was going to get 4 Gbit per second pointtooint.
51:47 That's not how it works. It's actually not adding more top speed, but adding
51:53 more lanes to the highway, if you get what I mean. So it's more like four one
51:57 gigabit streams versus a single 4
52:01 gigabit stream. So that means you could have four computers pulling one gigabit
52:05 off that computer all at the same time. Or if one of the connection goes down,
52:09 you'll have 3 GB total and it'll be a fail safe and everything will still
52:13 work. But you can't just have one
52:16 computer pulling off another one at 4 Gbit per second. So it doesn't really
52:20 matter for consumer use. That's why I ended up looking into uh uh looking into
52:25 whatever it's called.
52:31 Um right, 10 gigabit as opposed to something like 4
52:35 gigabit. So, let's
52:41 see. Here we go. Ryan says, "Lion, the
52:45 vid you just put up says December 14th."
52:48 Oops. Hey, hopefully that doesn't keep too many people from joining. You know
52:51 what? Let's take some newer questions. And I think I had a couple of live
52:55 stream topics tonight, but again, like I said, I can't Oh my goodness. I can't
52:59 leave Slick to entertain you guys in the meantime. What's your opinion on the
53:03 Korean rebranded Apple 27in Cinema Displays? I'm not aware of rebranded
53:07 Apple 27inch cinema displays. I'm aware of a minus panel LG IPS monitors that
53:13 are 2560 by 1440. Uh they're cheap,
53:17 which is good. They're cheap, which is
53:20 good. They're high-res, which is good. They're IPS, which is good. These are all good things. The things I'd worry
53:24 about are things like warranty support. Uh things where you're not going to get
53:27 a return for it, like backlight bleeding around the edges. These are A minus
53:31 panels, so the odds of getting a dead pixel. However many accounts you find on
53:35 the internet of people saying they didn't get one, the odds are better than
53:39 if you bought an A+ panel or an A panel, which is what you'll generally find in a
53:42 retail product. So, what's my opinion? They're cheap. if I was going to buy I
53:47 sure wish they'd make one without a glossy bezel. I was even looking into
53:51 them. I was like, "Well, I could use uh I could use a surround 27inch gaming
53:55 setup." And then I was just like, "Oh, they all have glossy bezels." I really
53:59 want to do a project over the next little bit where I actually take the bezels off of three monitors, mount them
54:04 on one of those XFXinity stands, and have like a bezelless multimonitor
54:08 setup. But that's the kind of thing that it'll be a little while before I can uh
54:12 before I can get that going. I still have to actually manage to finish building my computer. So yeah,
54:18 everything was working except his motherboard. Now the new motherboard is causing it to not post. Okay, well then
54:21 you might have a problem with your motherboard. Chris, uh, blues are the
54:24 loudest. Liam, is the 3970X worth buying
54:28 for a YouTube commentator? Like video rendering every day, maybe 3D and best
54:31 silent case. Define R4 window gets my vote for like just being a freaking
54:36 awesome case in general. Very, very quiet. Uh, 3970X, of course, it's not
54:40 worth it. I mean, do you even need me to tell you that? Just look at the specs.
54:44 It's like best case scenario like 10% faster than a 3930K and it costs like
54:49 what 2x. So, I don't know. Worth it? I don't
54:54 know. I mean, if it's your job and you make money doing it and you want to spend a,000 bucks, you want to have an
54:57 extreme edition, you want to have like a, you know, like a prestige piece, go
55:01 for it. Buy an extreme edition. Um, but if you're looking for bang for the buck,
55:06 buy a 3930K, overclock it. There you go.
55:10 You've got extreme edition performance pretty much within sort of margin of
55:14 error because it has about three megs less cache. Um they can overclock to
55:19 pretty much the same speed though. They're otherwise the same chip. They
55:22 are the same actual die. It's just a bin
55:25 process. Um and then if you run an even better value, you get a 3770K which
55:30 unless you're leveraging those other two cores will actually perform better than
55:34 a 3930K or a 3970X.
55:39 When is NCX opening in Montreal? Um,
55:43 probably not anytime soon would be my guess. There's a lot of laws around sort
55:48 of having a physical presence in Montreal where the the the laws don't
55:52 apply to you if you're not there, but they do apply to you if you are there
55:55 and you have to have like French on all your packaging and blah blah blah. Like,
55:58 I just super doubt it. Um, NCX already ships to Montreal. There's free shipping
56:02 promotions all the time. So yeah, I don't really see a compelling
56:07 reason to have a store there. Need a recommendation for a 750 watt power
56:11 supply, modular and easy to sleeve. Saw the EVG at a very attractive price. What
56:14 are you saying? Um, you know what? You know who does really easy to sleeve
56:17 power supplies? The Silverstone because they always do a onetoone connector. Uh,
56:21 they're modular cables are one cable to one cable, so you can easily resleve
56:25 them in a different color if you want. That's something that while the sleeving
56:28 on the Strider 1000 Plus, for example, is not the best I've ever seen, as a lot
56:32 of the commenters noted on the unboxing, um, it's not a bad power supply by any
56:37 stretch. It's efficient, it's small, so it's compact, it's going to fit in the
56:41 SG9 build that we're planning, and it is
56:44 very easy to sleeve if you want to do individual sleeings. So, there you go.
56:48 That would be that would be a good recommendation. Silverstone Plus and not
56:53 that expensive either. Fancy Cash works great apparently. Awesome. Single sleeve
56:57 power supply tutorial. Didn't manage to find one. Uh, I have that mixed in with
57:01 some of my personal rig updates, but honestly, I'm not the best at it. I
57:04 think there's some good guides on hard OCP,
57:08 particularly. How does the system
57:11 sound? Good. With SSD, get an I don't know, get
57:15 an M4. Get a Neutron GTX. Actually, we have a new SSD update coming on the NCX
57:20 Tech Tips channel soon where basically we discover that the Vector, the Neutron
57:24 GTX, the M5P from Plexor, and presumably
57:28 the 840 Pro are all kind of within spitting distance of each other. So, buy
57:31 whatever you want that makes you happy and looks cool and enjoy
57:35 it. Watching the live stream, setting up my Prodigy build. Oo, very nice. 3570K,
57:41 16 gigs, 680 signature, water cooled.
57:45 Very cool. Uh, the Black Widow Ultimate does use TriamX blue switches. I know,
57:49 but there's a Black Widow not Ultimate. That's what I was talking about. I don't
57:53 believe that one uses blue switches. Stream the build. All right, sounds
57:57 good. Just have some music. All
58:00 right. The first time seeing you live. I really like your YouTube tech tips.
58:04 Thank you. Thank you for watching. It helps a lot. Where can I test the
58:08 different types of Cherry MX keys? Really? Friends who have them? That's
58:13 about all you can really do. I mean, you can watch something like I did a
58:16 mechanical keyboard shopping guide on the NCX tech tips channel. You can watch
58:20 that. I try to give you guys a pretty good idea of the different feels, but
58:23 it's the kind of thing where unless you've tried it yourself, it's very hard
58:27 to to do sort of online. Um,
58:33 yeah. Uh, you know what? I think this is
58:37 a better topic for when Slick is here to sort of discuss it with me. So, I'm
58:41 going to leave that one for now.
58:44 Uh 75 degrees. Yeah, that's fine. Stream everything. Okay, got it.
58:51 What are your thoughts on water cooling kits? I think something like an H100 or
58:54 H100i makes a lot of sense because it has a dual radiator. I've never been a
58:58 big fan of single rad water cooling kits
59:01 for one reason. They're expensive. Well,
59:05 they're not super expensive. I mean, this is about a hundred bucks, which is
59:09 expensive, but it's not like, you know, going to make you break make you or
59:12 break you. Um, but I beyond clearing up
59:16 space around the CPU socket and looking really good, they don't offer anything
59:21 compelling over a high-end air cooler, which will actually perform better than
59:25 a pre-done water cooler. So, something like an H100 or H100i, that's ruler of
59:29 the roost. That's about as good as it gets in terms of performance because you
59:32 have all that surface area. You got two fans, they are both cooling it and doing
59:37 awesome work and everything is good. Better even than a Silverero Extreme.
59:40 Silver Extreme destroyed the H8I in my testing. So, that's all I really need to
59:45 know about it. Why am I spending so much on this if it actually doesn't perform
59:48 as well as a high-end air cooling solution? Not to mention that high-end
59:52 air cooling solutions can be more flexible in some ways. My wife's
59:55 machine, if you check out my personal project, wife computer or something like
60:00 that, has a Silverero non-extreme in it that I'm actually using to passively
60:05 cool the CPU. So, she's got a 980X in
60:10 there. So, that's an Extreme Edition six core last generation Golf Town. Uh,
60:14 she's got a 5870 that has an aftermarket
60:17 cooler on it. Also a thermal right cooler with a 120 mil fan. So, there's
60:21 only three fans in this machine. There's one in the back of the case blowing
60:24 inward towards that tower heat sink, which is enough to keep it cool under
60:28 load. No overclocking, mind you. There's the 5870 fan, which is spinning at like
60:32 600 RPM or something like that. So, it's very, very quiet and keeps that card
60:37 cool even under full firmark load. Um, I had it turned around the the wrong way
60:41 for a bit. That wasn't very smart. If I'd had the fan speed cranked up, it
60:45 might have been okay, but I got had to turn that back around. And then there's the power supply fan. Super silent
60:50 machine. Uh, couldn't do it with something like an H80 because you'd have
60:53 a pump and you would need another fan on
60:56 the back. So, you haven't managed to actually eliminate any noise sources.
61:00 Whereas with a tower heat sink in a passive mode, you've managed to eliminate at least one fan from the
61:05 system. So there, that's my take on that. Love to watch the live stream.
61:09 Okay. How much do you think is a normal price for a high-end case? I don't know,
61:12 man. It's called Google. Google highend here. You know what? Why don't we do
61:16 this just for ls? Oh. Oh, I screwed up. There we
61:23 go. Hi.
61:31 Lunatic high-end iPhone case. Oh, we
61:35 better be more specific.
61:39 Computer. Aha. High-end computer case. Best high-end gaming case. Solved
61:46 on Tom's hardware. I am looking for a
61:49 high-end gaming case. Blah blah blah blah blah blah
61:53 blah. Something something something. First one looks decent. Okay. Something
61:59 something. Ah, someone linked to
62:02 Newegg. A high-end case. Look at that. It's a
62:06 TJ7. Oh, what happened to it? It went away. Boo. Boo. TJ7BW
62:13 discontinued. Whatever. It's like 350 bucks. So, there. That answers your
62:17 question. TJ07 is a high. Actually, I didn't stage that you guys, just so you
62:21 know. TJ07 is a high-end case and it's about 350 bucks.
62:27 Stream the build. Stream the build. Stream the build. Stream the build. Got
62:30 it. Okay, I got it. I got it. I got it. What do you recommend as a replacement
62:34 for Infinity? Infinity. Um, Infinity is just
62:40 uh AMD's branding for running triple monitors and surround. So, there's
62:44 NVIDIA Surround, which is not quite as easy to set up as affinity, and then
62:47 there's Infinity. So, that's that's it.
62:50 Uh, is the 39. Oh, yeah. Okay, I already saw that one. Best CPU temperature
62:55 monitoring software. I use Realtemp. I really like it. What's a
62:59 quick recommendation you could give us for a good budgeted video editing rig?
63:03 3770K. 16 to 32 gigs of RAM. MATX board.
63:07 Keep it nice and small. SSD for
63:11 boot. Another different drive for scratch. Yeah. Okay. I want to get an
63:16 SSD, but don't want to spend over $100. What's the best? Buy a 120 gig SSD
63:21 that's under 100 bucks. Get whatever you want because you're not getting a
63:24 premium SSD at that price. So, buy whatever you can get. Just make sure you
63:28 get something decent like an M4. Currently, I have a 6870 and I'm
63:32 planning to upgrade. Should I get another one to buy? No. Buy a better single card. A lot of people sort of
63:37 Okay, here. Think about it this way. When you get a new car, do you buy
63:42 another car to run next to it so you can carry more people or do you just sell
63:46 your old car and buy a new car? I think most people sell their old car. But a
63:51 lot of people seem to have trouble with this whole my video card is outdated.
63:56 Um, so you know, I'm gonna replace it and then they just kind of like they
64:00 throw it away or something like I don't. It has a trade-in value. Sell your old
64:05 graphics card. Find a buddy to buy it. Sell put it on eBay. It doesn't matter.
64:09 You can get money back for your graphics card. 6870 is still worth a couple
64:12 bucks. So you sell that, you take that money, you buy something better. So,
64:17 it's not just as simple as, well, a 6870 will only cost me $100 and a 7950 will
64:23 cost me $250, so I'm spending 100 or
64:26 250. No, no, you sell your 6870 for 100 bucks. Then you pay an extra 150, you
64:31 get something new that's better and faster and current generation and will have longer driver support and all these
64:35 other advantages. So, I almost never recommend twinning an older graphics
64:39 card. Sell what you have, get something new. Misk is an open source RAM disc
64:44 software. Okay, I have a Model M. Very nice. I haven't tried the Unicom.
64:48 Although, I had a ModelM that someone gave me and then they took back, so I
64:52 was super sad about that. Uh, best headset would be the 7H. That's my
64:56 personal favorite. Is it the best best best best? Hard to say. I don't know.
64:59 Uh, Plantronics has a new like Game Commander something or other that's like
65:03 300 bucks. It looks pretty uber. Haven't tried it yet. But 7H is a great value
65:07 for around 100 bucks. Uh, and yes, Oculus VR. That's the virtual reality
65:11 thing I was talking about. Since we're on the topic of
65:15 games, what are some of your most played? Played a lot of Left 4 Dead.
65:19 Played Far Cry all the way through a couple times. Uh, played Crisis all the
65:23 way through. Final Fantasy 6, I've played through sort of a half a dozen,
65:27 10 times. Um, six is the
65:31 best. It truly is. Seven is not better than six. Um, I don't know what else.
65:37 Played a lot of TIE Fighter when I was a kid.
65:41 opinions on passive silent CPU coolers. I think I talked about this a fair bit
65:44 uh right after he asked that question. So, I'm going to leave that one for now.
65:48 What PC case would you guys buy to get the best included cooling per dollar?
65:54 I'd probably get something from like a half series, like a half 912, something like that. How much do you think is a
65:59 normal price for a case? Oh, man. Is the
66:02 3970 There's a repeat. Okay, let's go
66:06 back up to the top. No. No, I don't think so. As much as
66:10 Gabe Newell wants it
66:14 to. Okay. 168 new interactions. Awesome. You
66:19 know what? If you guys give me just one moment, I'm going to see if I can find
66:23 any of the topics that I wanted to do tonight. So, live stream topic. No,
66:29 that's a stupid topic. Um, oh, shoot.
66:33 Right. I forgot about this. I have a giveaway for tonight. It is
66:39 only for live stream watchers,
66:43 viewers, and I don't remember how I was planning
66:49 to do it. Let me just find the email where we
66:55 talked about it. I cannot find it. Oh,
67:00 please tell me it's there. Uh
67:05 I am giving away a copy of Windows 8. I
67:09 don't actually know what version of Windows 8. I I I don't really know
67:14 anything. Why don't we do a Microsoft
67:17 trivia thing and the first one Aha. The
67:22 first one to tweet the correct
67:25 answer is the winner of a copy of Windows 8.
67:30 So, I'm going to go with one of my personal favorite little bits of
67:33 Microsoft trivia because it has to do with my hometown. And I'm going to ask
67:39 I'm not going to give you guys many hints. Okay. So, you're going to win
67:42 Windows 8. Oh. Oh. Oh, right. And you got to go to here. Hold on. Hold on. I'm
67:46 going to find there's a YouTube channel. There's a collaborative effort going on
67:49 to bring you guys this giveaway. So, look at Slick. There he is. Uh, so Timmy
67:56 Tech TV, I think.
68:00 Uh yeah, I want to leave this page. Hold on. Timmy TechTV. So this
68:06 giveaway is sponsored by Timmy Tech TV. Um so we're getting Oh, wait. Okay,
68:12 there you go. Look at that. He has a video about it. Let's watch the
68:17 video. D intro. Moving right along.
68:21 Timmy TechTV and Linus Tech Tips.
68:33 All right. I don't know what he says, but it's probably pretty good. So,
68:38 basically, I have decided that the first
68:42 person, guys, be ready. Be ready on Twitter. If you're not following on Twitter, then that's really just too bad
68:47 for you. Um, you know, I'm sorry you don't like Twitter or Twitter, you know,
68:52 burned your dog or something, but uh that's how you're going to
68:57 win. What was the code
69:04 name for Windows
69:07 Vista based on? Oh, and guys, to win, you got to be
69:13 subscribed to me. You got to be subscribed to Timmy TechTV. So guys, do
69:17 check out his
69:20 videos. Yeah. No, no, no, no. Yeah, I know what the code name was. What? Why
69:25 was that the code name? What was it actually based on? Okay, so let's go
69:29 back to
69:33 Twitter. You win a copy of Windows
69:37 8. Okay. Yeah, no one got it before that. And yes, that is a ThinkGeek
69:40 sticker in the back. I don't remember where it is, but it's somewhere back there. Yeah, it's on my external DVD
69:45 drive. This uh this question is pretty pretty
69:49 close to my heart.
69:53 Yeah. No, no, none of this is right. No,
69:57 none of this is right. Oh, hold on. Okay, let's see if Oh, let's see if Oh,
70:01 no. Sasha's not first. Hold on. Hold on. Uh, what? Oh, jeez. This isn't very
70:07 accurate. Can't hear your videos. So,
70:10 yeah, Longhorn. Longhorn. Yeah, it was Longhorn, but that's not that's not why.
70:15 Oh, Suki, I don't know if I can let you
70:18 have that one because it is
70:21 not Yeah. Yes. It's not specific enough.
70:25 Not specific enough. Yes. The Longhorn Saloon is in Whistler, BC, which is very
70:31 near to where I live. But the first person to say the Longhorn Longhorn Bar.
70:37 Oh crap. I don't know if we've actually I don't know if we got a correct answer.
70:40 I might have to come up with something else. I'm going to have to see. Okay.
70:44 So, the Hold on. Time is now 10:13. So, anyone who anyone who comes up with it
70:50 Yeah. No, it's not the Longhorn Horn Bar. It is the Longhorn Saloon, folks.
70:55 Let's see if anyone came up with that before we ran out of uh before I gave
70:59 away the answer here.
71:08 Shoot. Yeah. No. No. Yeah. Sorry, guys.
71:13 I I cannot I cannot let that uh cannot
71:16 let that happen. Longhorn barn is not or
71:20 barn Longhorn bar is not good enough. It is the Longhorn saloon needed a specific
71:25 answer. Okay, so let's come up with
71:29 something
71:38 else. Let's make this one easier just for just for ls actually. Let's make
71:42 this one B. The first person to answer this viewer's question. So, this was
71:47 this was from a previous or this Twitter Twitter respondent's question is going
71:51 to win a copy of Windows 8. So, I had someone say,
71:55 "Linus, I uh I recently upgraded my
71:58 memory in my system. I put in I put in a whole new kit of memory. I've got 32
72:02 gigs of RAM. It's showing up in the BIOS. Um, but unfortunately in my OS, I
72:08 only see 16 gigs.
72:12 I can only use 16 gigs. What's the problem? The first person to tweet me
72:17 the correct answer to that
72:20 problem wins a copy of Windows 8,
72:24 assuming that they are subscribed to me and Timmy TechTV. Holy crap. 20 new
72:29 interactions. Uh, go down, go down, go down, go down. I need a specific answer
72:33 here, guys. Specific answer.
72:42 Yep. Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Yep. Yep. Yep. Nope. 32-bit is not the
72:47 problem. 32-bit would not show 16 gigs of memory. You'd be limited to three or
72:51 four. Not correct. Not correct. Not correct.
72:55 Upgrade Windows is not specific enough for me. Devon, what version of Windows
72:59 is he running? Home Edition. Not going to
73:03 accept that either. Windows Premium. Nope. Sorry.
73:09 I'm looking for the specifically correct answer. Twitter laziness will not work.
73:14 See, again, this this is correct, but oh man, you guys you guys are killing me
73:20 here. Why hasn't anyone tweeted
73:28 me? Oh, see there,
73:33 finally the RAM. Okay, you know what? Actually, I think that one came in
73:37 before I said anything. Hold on. Hold on. Going down. Going down. Okay. 32-bit
73:43 versus 64-bit is not right. So, let's go all the way up. I'm
73:48 looking for the first person to say that he's running Windows Home Premium.
73:52 Windows Home
73:56 Premium. Windows version does not. Okay,
73:59 Ryan, I think you're the first one.
74:02 Windows 7 Home Premium is the pro. I don't like the way you guys are
74:06 answering these though. I kind of kind of hate it where it's just not complete
74:11 sentence answers and it's like sort of
74:15 random and
74:18 crappy. Okay, I tell you what, I'll let Twitter decide. Ryan's the first one
74:22 that actually managed to say what OS he was running and what was the problem,
74:27 but he didn't say what the solution was.
74:30 Whereas I saw one further up
74:34 here. Okay, hold on. Where is it? Only
74:37 blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. No, I thought I saw one that said
74:43 upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7
74:47 Pro. Okay, fine. Let's go. Let's go between Kian who says upgrade your
74:52 Windows Oh, hold on. Windows Premium, not Pro. Okay, let's find the first
74:55 person who didn't really sort of say it right. and then we'll we'll go for Ryan
75:00 being the person who actually called it the the correct thing. So, here we go.
75:05 First person who had the correct idea but didn't really say it
75:09 right.
75:15 Um, okay. So, I want you guys to tell me, should it be Devon or Ryan? Because
75:20 Devon said upgrade Windows, but see, no. You know what? No, I can't accept that
75:24 because he could have meant 32 versus 64-bit. Let's go with Jason. Jason or
75:28 Ryan, Windows Home Edition is the problem. But Ryan actually calls it the
75:32 right thing because home edition is not a Windows 7 product. That is a Windows
75:37 XP product. Windows XP Home Edition. And
75:40 if it was Windows XP Home Edition, it would not be 64-bit and it would not
75:44 have 16 gigs of RAM being recognized in it. That's why I don't like these
75:48 inexact answers because I don't know if you guys actually know what the problem
75:52 is. So, I'll let I'll let Twitter decide
75:55 and we will go from there. Holy crap, Twitter's exploding. You guys saved. You
75:59 got Okay. Okay. Twitter has decided. Ryan is the winner. So, Ryan, uh, please
76:04 send me an email at Linus techtips@gmail.com and we will we will
76:09 go with it. So, for next week, I want you guys to be as precise as possible in
76:15 your answers. I am going to be doing Windows 8 giveaways sponsored by Timmy
76:19 Tech TV. So, guys, don't forget that YouTube channel where you want to go
76:24 here. There you go. youtube.comtimite oh you can't see
76:29 ittimmy TV that is the actual sponsor of
76:32 these Windows 8 giveaways so make sure you're subscribed to him make sure
76:36 you're following him for any future updates and Ryan send me an email I will
76:40 arrange to get you a Windows 8 CD key you'll have to figure out where to get
76:43 media on your own but that's not the part that costs money um and thank you
76:48 everyone for playing and thanks for you know watching the live stream yay so I'm
76:52 glad I didn't forget about that and I'll come up with I Instead of trying to
76:55 think of questions on the spot next week, I will uh I will come up with uh I
77:00 will come up with questions ahead of time. I had totally forgotten about it.
77:03 Lus, I know you have a motorbike. I have an SV
77:08 650S. Okay. Blah blah blah blah blah
77:11 blah blah. Yeah, Dan, you were after you were after the other guy. Okay. Better
77:15 luck next week, Dan. I'm sorry.
77:23 Uh,
77:27 okay guys, remember this is just for
77:32 fun. Just for fun, everyone. Oh, yeah. That's a good idea. Jeff Ryan, tweet at
77:37 me so that I know that it's the right
77:40 person. Tam TechTV is not stealing Windows 8 copies. Geez, whatever
77:46 happened to the Cougar power supply? I still use it on one of my test benches.
77:50 4 gig 670 or 2 gig 680. 4 gig 670 for
77:54 high-res, so above 1080p. 2 gig 680 for
77:57 1080p. Cooler Master Iceberg hopefully coming soon you
78:01 guys. Um, I work out of the head office
78:04 in Richmond, not the Aberdine store.
78:07 Head office, different thing. If my primary monitor is 120 Hz, can I
78:12 duplicate my screen at lower hertz? Yes, you can. No problems at all. thinking
78:16 about getting a G75 or a GT70. Which is better? Honestly, for me, gaming
78:21 notebooks come down to spec, especially when you compare two solid brands like
78:24 ASUS and MSI. They're both good notebooks. Buy whichever one is slightly
78:28 faster or is on promo or whatever else. What do I think of a Roseill 550 watt
78:33 power supply? Who cares? No offense if Paul's
78:38 watching. Uh, is there going to be another tech in 2013? Potentially. I
78:43 don't know of any plans for a specific date or anything like that, but Viet
78:48 says, "I never see my tweets on your live stream." I'm sure glad that you
78:51 wasted your tweet uh telling me that. I'm sure you're glad,
78:57 too. All right, let's go ahead and uh scroll back up here and see if we got
79:02 any more tweets. Thanks for bearing with me on the whole just Q&A style video
79:07 tonight, you guys. I know it might not have been as interesting as having Slick
79:11 U hosting with me, but like I said, he is he is
79:16 super he is super uh super sick. So
79:24 um here we go. Live stream topics. Ah
79:28 yes, this was a good question. I had someone uh tweet twitter me, tweet me,
79:33 tweet me asking why is it that my graphics card has
79:39 GDDR5 and my computer system does not
79:43 use GDDR5. So a couple different things.
79:46 Number one is graphics memory has a completely different set of requirements
79:50 from desktop PC memory. So this one is
79:53 just sort of my general understanding, but I my understanding is that PC
79:59 desktop memory has to have a higher degree of accuracy, a higher degree of
80:02 precision than something like graphics memory. If a mistake is made on a
80:06 graphics card and there's some kind of a bit flipped or whatever else goes wrong,
80:11 it is maybe you have a pixel that's discolored. Whereas if it happens with
80:15 your system memory and something critical in the OS was happening there,
80:19 the whole thing goes down. So there's that. Number two is graphics memory has
80:24 always been kind of ahead of of desktop
80:27 memory because you don't have to deal with a socketed slot. So because you can
80:31 solder it right to the board, it interfaces much more directly. The line
80:35 the traces are cleaner. You have fewer points of failure. So that's all good.
80:39 Can run at much higher clock speeds and it is optimized for bandwidth.
80:43 Bandwidth. Bandwidth. Bandwidth. Remember guys, bandwidth and latency are
80:47 not the same thing. Turning clock speeds up can improve both of them. But if you
80:51 need to push through like shed loads of data, then you build yourself a
80:56 completely custom memory interface. That's another thing is the memory
81:00 interfaces required for these kinds of more advanced memory are not available
81:03 on the desktop yet. You build yourself a super wide memory interface. You solder
81:07 chips directly to your board and then you clock them to high hell and back and
81:12 you will get a ton of bandwidth. They've also optimized GDDR which is different
81:16 from DDR. They've optimized GDDR memory for not necessarily great latencies, but
81:22 for fantastic throughput. So that means
81:25 that if you have to draw a complex scene or you have to store a bunch of textures
81:28 in it and get them out really really fast to draw scenes on the screen, it's
81:31 great for that. However, if it was something where you know you get um I
81:37 Okay, sorry my my brain's kind of tired. It's been a long week. um something
81:42 where you need to reach just one bit of data very very fast, lower latency is
81:46 better. And as we move towards sort of higher and higher frequencies and more
81:50 and more bandwidth, latencies are actually getting worse as opposed to
81:54 getting better. DDR3 has more latency than DDR2, but it's compensated for by
81:59 better integrated memory controllers and all that stuff. So, we just need to wait
82:02 for the desktop to catch up. We also don't really need the bandwidth on the
82:06 desktop. I can't think of many scenarios where the desktop actually even benefits
82:10 from going from dual channel to quad channel. I mean, look it up, guys.
82:14 There's not a lot of benefit and we're literally doubling the bandwidth, which
82:18 is all you're going to do by adding GDDR5 to to a desktop machine. So, I
82:23 hope that sort of answers the question. I don't think I got that across as
82:27 clearly as I was hoping, but uh there you go.
82:38 Okay. Oh, yeah. And anyone who's emailing me saying that they won when
82:42 actually they didn't won and they're and I'm not going to be verifying them, like
82:46 seriously, grow up.
82:50 Um, live stream
82:57 topic. Oh, here's a cool one. Oh, yeah.
83:00 So Samsung just acquired Envel or Envo
83:04 or Nve. So those are the guys who do the dataex caching software that's in use in
83:09 products like the uh Corair. Oh shoot,
83:13 what is it? Whatever the OCZ Synapse, so caching solution, the Crucial
83:17 Adrenaline, and the Oh, see now I want to now I want to remember
83:21 Corsair. Ah crap, I can't remember what it's called, but they're caching SSD.
83:25 Um, so those guys do basically there's
83:29 nothing special about a Synapse SSD. It's just an SSD. There's nothing
83:33 special about an Adrenaline. It's just an M4. That's all it is. It's got a
83:36 special firmware. It comes with a key for the Datallex software. So the
83:39 Datalex software is dynamically loading
83:42 your most frequently used data into an SSD off of a hard drive so that you can
83:46 get basically SSD speeds off of the data
83:49 that you access the most. and then you can fall back on the hard drive for mass
83:53 storage when things sort of overflow
83:56 from the SSD. It doesn't have the same kinds of limitations as something like
84:00 Intel's SRT, smart response technology
84:04 um because it doesn't limit you to only a 64 gig SSD or less, which is really
84:09 cool. But oh yeah, and it doesn't lock you down to a Z68 or Z77 platform, which
84:14 is also cool. But now that Samsung owns
84:18 it, I think it's going to be very interesting time for the overall SSD
84:22 caching market. It it's not something that's really taken off. I mean, it's
84:26 the kind of thing where consumers, they don't trust it. But then you put a
84:30 laptop that has even like a 16 gig or 32 gig SSD cache in it in a consumer's
84:35 hands and you tell them it has a hard drive, they kind of go, "Oh yeah, this is like way faster. This is way better."
84:40 So yeah, I'm not sure how that affects guys like uh guys like an OCZ who are
84:44 licensing the software, but I can tell you right now it's very exciting for
84:48 someone like Samsung. I mean, remember Samsung spun off their hard drive
84:53 business to I believe it was Seagate, although I really hope I'm not wrong
84:56 about that. So Samsung designs and fabs
85:00 nan flash and controllers. They're they're an SSD builder. They're
85:04 affiliated with a hard drive builder that's already been pushing
85:09 the boundaries on integrated, you know, SSD caching solutions on consumer hard
85:14 drives with the Momentous XT line. And all of a sudden, they've got this new
85:18 software sort of and these these new staff. They're keeping all the staff, so
85:22 they're keeping the company intact. They've got this fresh blood coming in
85:26 that might be able to help everyone have better ways to integrate all these
85:29 things together. So, I personally believe SSD caching is going to be huge
85:33 for the future and I'm really really excited to see what comes out of it, but
85:36 I don't know what it means in terms of the competitive landscape. So, I would
85:39 worry a little bit about that. So, that's someone I that's something I had
85:42 someone ask me about. Trying to decide between iPad and Surface. What do I
85:47 think about RT? Should I wait for the Pro? Pro is going to run hotter. It's
85:50 going to have less battery life by about half, which kind of kills the whole
85:53 tablet experience for me. Um, if I was
85:57 buying a tablet tomorrow, depends. If it's an entertainment device, if I'm
86:01 just going to play games on it and I'm going to watch movies, I'd probably get an iPad. If I'm actually going to try
86:06 and do any work on it, Surface, hands down. Surface RT
86:10 done. For the giveaway, you should think about random tech questions because
86:14 everyone is going to study Windows questions. That's fine. Go study Windows questions. You'll have a better chance
86:18 to win. It's good. Uh, what do you think of the Kraken as a closed loop cooler
86:22 compared to the H100i? I will be testing it soon and I will let you guys know.
86:25 I'm also planning to put myself together like a a pretty inexpensive uh custom
86:30 water cooling loop and throw that in there just to see how much further ahead
86:34 it is versus something like an H100i. I'm not expecting it to be that
86:38 different because we're mostly radiator limited when you only have a dual 120
86:41 mil rad. Do I ever try what? Kihi with feta
86:46 cheese. No, I think you mean
86:49 Kiwi A65400 K or A105800 K for general
86:53 gaming performance. Eh, both of those
86:56 are pretty meh. If you want to actually game, then get like a, you know, an
87:01 FX4100 and a video card. Um, if you want
87:04 to run onboard, then I'd get the A10
87:07 probably. Happy New Year's. Not yet. Not yet, but it will be New Year's before I
87:11 have another live stream. So, there you go. You know what? I think that's pretty
87:16 much all I can do for tonight, guys. I had forgotten how hard this is to do
87:20 without a co-host. So, thank you all for tuning in. And don't forget, we do live
87:24 streams on Friday nights, my time at 9:00. And don't forget to subscribe to
87:27 Linus Tech Tips for all your favorite unboxings, reviews, and other computer
87:30 videos and cats and Twinkies and Oh, wait. I forgot. No,
87:36 no, there's one more thing I have to do tonight. So you guys can stick around for it or not, but the AR drone video
87:42 that I posted over a year ago with the AR drone
87:46 1 has officially got more than 1 million
87:50 views on YouTube, which means that the
87:53 AR drone itself has earned a place
87:58 on the wall of legends.
88:02 And I hate putting these hooks up in
88:05 front of you all because last time I had
88:09 some problems and then y'all made fun of me. But I'm going to do it anyway
88:14 without a spotter this time. So, you know, things are going to get things are
88:18 going to get pretty real before this is over. Pretty real, pretty dangerous. So,
88:23 let's go ahead and find a nice place to put the AR drone V1. So, that's my
88:29 second video. the only one on the Linus Tech Tips channel that's gotten over a
88:34 million views on the YouTubes. So, that's very very exciting for us
88:38 YouTubers. We're we're into the whole like views thing. That makes us pretty
88:42 happy. So, let's go ahead and hang it kind of here, which means I'm going to
88:46 need to put a thing in sort of here.
88:51 Okay, I'm not doing any more Q&A for the rest of the night. So, if you guys are
88:55 if you guys find this boring, then feel free to tune out.
89:00 Okay. Yes, I know these hooks are a bad solution. Yes, I know they're destroying
89:04 my pegboard, but I'm committed to it now. So, here we
89:10 go. You can never say
89:14 that I'm not committed to ideas, even if
89:17 they're bad, once I commit to them. I
89:20 would never have that said about me. They're really hard to put in
89:25 because it just starts picking up the uh the pegboard.
89:29 rather than just sort of going into the wall nicely. So there you go. Hook
89:34 one for the AR drone. And then hook two
89:38 will go probably right about here. Right
89:43 about maybe maybe let's go. Let's go there. Okay.
89:50 It's going to go right there. Where's my duck?
89:58 Thank you guys. Without you, I obviously can't get a million views on anything,
90:02 so I appreciate that. You got to be kidding me. Did I hit a stud
90:07 again? I realized that's why I was having so much trouble with that other
90:11 one last time. Oh, no. I don't think I did. I think it's
90:17 okay. I had someone at work bugging me about these hooks the next day after I
90:21 did my first hook hanging thing where I put up this video card.
90:26 You know what? Whatever you
90:29 guys. All right, there we go. Parad Drone. You haven't even been able to see
90:34 any of this the whole time. I just realized that. Parad Drone has been
90:38 added to the legendary wall with the
90:42 video card that also has a million views, the air drone with a million
90:46 views, and the axe, which oh, I mean, zombies, right? You never know when
90:51 you're going to need an axe. Especially in Canada, I might have
90:55 to like chop down some trees and stuff. Good night, everyone.
