0:02 Okay, welcome to the WAN Show, ladies
0:05 and gentlemen, where we have one hour
0:09 and 20 minutes late. I believe this may be maybe the latest that we have ever
0:15 been. We are the whole duration of the show late. Yes, that is a thing that
0:20 happened today. And um yep, to be
0:25 perfectly honest with you guys, the stream is still not perfect.
0:30 Um I cannot I I cannot run the intro
0:33 video clip for some inexplicable reason.
0:36 We should just carry one of the chairs and then you can like drop it partway
0:40 through right when you get in frame and then like sit there and go like
0:44 going. We could do it. Yeah, we could we
0:48 could do that. It's okay. I'm just I'm not gonna Yeah, I'm not going to worry
0:52 about it. Uh let's just let's just go ahead and get this show on the freaking
0:59 road here. Let's get it Let's get it on
1:02 the road cuz uh
1:05 uh apparently there's a Oh, yeah. I know. I know why there's an echo. I know
1:08 why there's an echo. Don't worry. Don't worry, you guys. We got this. Don't
1:12 worry about it. Don't worry about it. Awesome. I still had the I just had the
1:15 speakers on on my laptop because I didn't have my uh my headphones plugged
1:19 in for a second here. We should be all good now. Let's go ahead and talk about
1:23 what topics we're going to be hitting today. Topic number one is the NVIDIA
1:28 GeForce GTX Titan X.
1:31 Titan X again. Titan X 2. If you know we
1:35 were to take the Final Fantasy approach to this, the the way they're going with
1:38 it is they're calling it Titan X Pascal.
1:41 Well, we'll we'll get into that a little bit more later. what we both think of that. Also, Facebook wants to use
1:46 freaking lasers to deliver high-speed internet to remote areas. I approve of
1:51 this simply because it involves freaking lasers, but we'll talk more about the
1:55 rest of it later. Of course, NVIDIA also dropped a 1060 this week cuz
2:00 uh apparently releasing gratudous amounts of graphics cards all at once is
2:05 a good idea. Also, owner of Kickass Torrance was arrested and is about to be
2:10 absolutely screwed. Yes. Yes, he is. All right, let's roll the
2:18 intro. It doesn't work. No, it's so far off.
2:24 And see, like you you start kind of going Mario and then you switch it.
2:34 Ministry of Supply.
2:38 I fix it.
2:42 So, I'm having I'm having I'm running into a weird issue. I think it's a video
2:46 codecreated thing where every time I try and play a a video file, our streaming
2:50 software crashes. Maybe iFix it could release a i ifixit guide on how we can
2:54 fix the stream. I would love it if
2:57 iFixit had like like a tearown guide of
3:01 xsplit. Yeah, like a tearown guide of just streaming in general because
3:05 because we need all the other things figured out too at this point. tear down guide of audio solutions, streaming
3:10 software, streaming software utilities,
3:13 audio monitoring, all that kind of stuff. All the things the lower third
3:17 works, pictures work, videos don't work. So, so there you go. That's where that's
3:21 where we're at with that. Um, I feel like I was in the middle of an
3:24 explanation of why we were so late last time. And I know that we're an hour and
3:28 20 minutes late, but I'm going to explain it anyway because there is a
3:32 valid reason. It was all because I was trying to fix it. So, first I took the
3:37 Stream Computer and upgraded it from X79
3:41 with a two generational top-of-the-line CPU to X99. I used the X99 Deluxe board,
3:48 which like our experience with rock solid freaking awesome board. It's
3:52 probably How many people get that? I I I hate
3:57 you. How many people get that? Can we straw poll? I hate using Can you go
4:01 ahead and straw poll? In fact, uh, hold on a second.
4:05 I believe there actually is a Luke screen HDMI now. Oh, what? I was making
4:12 upgrades, my main man. That sort of makes sense. I was I was making
4:16 upgrades. I was doing things. I was trying to make the stream better. Is
4:20 this set up? Am I going to ruin things by plugging this in? I don't know. Let's
4:23 find out. So, anyway, X99 Deluxe motherboard. The
4:28 most basic like low-speed DDR4 that I
4:31 could possibly find. Yeah, that's good. That's a good thing. What just happened
4:35 there? Uh screen turned off. It's like
4:39 um X99 Deluxe. Uh what what else did I
4:42 do? Right. Right. Changed out the CPU, RAM, motherboard, uh new SSD because get
4:47 this, as soon as I changed the hardware, I've actually seen this once before, but
4:53 when I changed out the hardware, every time I booted, every time I booted to
4:57 the existing Windows install, no USB
5:00 device could be detected. unplugging, replugging, going into the BIOS,
5:03 changing EHCI, XHCI handoff, all that stuff. Nothing did anything. I even
5:08 pulled it out of this machine, put it in a different machine. No USB devices. And
5:11 because nothing has PS2 anymore, there's no way to even try to fix it. So, I may
5:16 just keep that drive forever as like as like a trophy of the kind of
5:21 that I have to go through sometimes. So, I had to reinstall the OS. I mean,
5:25 meanwhile, it's like it's like 3:15 at this point. Like, I got lots of time.
5:28 I'm feeling pretty good. Um, so I reinstall the OS. I get my new capture
5:33 cards going and I'm still my my capture
5:36 my my streaming software is still crashing. It's still crashing. So I'm
5:40 changing out my XLR input to a different one and it's it's still crashing. And
5:45 I'm like, what is going on? Turns out turns out video file, which is why I was
5:49 late in the first place. And then we had issues with the audio quality on the
5:54 stream, which is why we were yet another 20 minutes late. So, I'm very sorry
5:59 about all that. Let's find out if it was all worthwhile by switching over to the
6:04 Luke screen scene.
6:08 There's There's nothing there.
6:11 Wasn't set up at all. Okay, just hold on. Just hold on. Just hold on. Hold on.
6:15 I was I didn't set it up. I didn't set it up. Okay, just just wait. Just wait.
6:18 He named He named the scene and then was just like, "That's enough."
6:22 Oh my. Uh, try unplugging and plugging it back
6:27 in. Okay, let's see. Let's see. And also make sure your sound is off because
6:30 otherwise they're going to get all your sound things. Have you tried turning it
6:34 off and back on again?
6:39 Oh god. Oh no.
6:43 Oh no. Uh, well, you can very clearly see
6:48 that uh the yes votes are at 13%. The no
6:52 votes are at 52%. And the turnup votes are at 35%.
6:59 Oh. Oh, hold on. There's a loose connection. It's a loose connection.
7:03 Hold on. Hold on. I just got to tighten this up. Hold on. See, seem to Oh, it
7:07 seemed to get better there. Oh. Oh. It's not better. Hold on. I I took it out. I
7:11 took it out. Okay. Um,
7:18 can they even still hear us? Oh, no. All
7:24 right. So, uh, well, well, you guys get the point. And we're never sharing
7:28 Luke's screen again. No, no, we will share Luke's screen again someday. I just I hadn't actually done that. Not
7:34 this day. But it was not this day. One does not simply
7:44 What are we going to do, my precious? Uh, we're going to talk about GTX 1060
7:48 as if nothing happened. Like, yeah, let's do that. The stream is completely
7:52 fine. All right, our original article here. Hold on. Hold on. I got my my my
7:56 screen works. Our original article is ours Technica and not our own
8:00 review. What the heck? Come on,
8:05 bro. I made a video about this. Everyone's a critic, yo. Oh, man. Oh,
8:10 wow. Colton was just I think he was taking out some angst cuz I was giving
8:14 him I was giving him crap about something like last Friday and you know
8:19 I apologized for it after because my management technique was less than
8:23 stellar on that occasion. Okay. But I think he's I think he's going to be
8:27 trying to get back at you know he can't really get back at me because I'm his
8:32 boss. So he might just be taking it out on you for the next little bit. I'm
8:35 technically also his boss. I'm kind of actually, you know, you couldn't fire
8:39 him directly, but if you were like, "Yo, Lionus, let's have a heartto-heart. I
8:44 think we really need to fire Colton. He's been stealing things. I brought him
8:48 into this world. I can make him leave this world." Yeah. I think maybe indirectly, but Yeah. I I think I think
8:53 I would have to take your word over his. Like, if you said Colton stole a bunch
8:58 of stuff and Colton's like, "Yo, go to Luke's house. It's all there." Like set
9:03 up around his computer. I'd be like,
9:07 "You know what, Colton? It's probably you who put it there."
9:11 So now Colton knows that there's just this thing. And now Luke knows that if
9:15 he ever wants to steal stuff and blame it on, that's exactly how it's going to go
9:20 down. And all I have to do is leave it very specifically around my computer and
9:24 then I'll be like, "Look, this is exactly what we talked about would happen. It's exactly what you said would
9:28 happen. This and and you can turn that. You're just so smart. You knew it would
9:32 happen this way." And how can I not believe you when you're so astute as to
9:36 observe my intelligence being what it is? Of course. Well, let's talk about
9:40 GTX 1060. So, in a nutshell, the RS
9:43 Technica headline kind of covers it, or the by line, I guess it's called. GTX
9:48 1060 is faster than 980 for just a little bit more cash than the RX 480.
9:53 What's missing from that summary is
9:56 um how it compares in terms of speed to the RX 480, which is so you can't have a
10:02 performance comparison to some thing that's not available anymore and then a
10:06 price comparison to some other completely unrelated thing from a completely different company that um we
10:12 don't we don't like performs. Give me a second really quick because something
10:17 that's been kind of weird in a lot of reviews, including my own, I'm going to
10:21 admit this right now because it's hard to quantify. Um, okay. I want to see if
10:27 you can even buy any of them. GTX 1060s.
10:32 Yes. So, there is one GTX 1060 currently
10:36 available on Amazon, and I think it's a mislabeled product. Nope. Nope, that's a
10:41 1060. There is one of them available from EVGA. So, we'll see how long that
10:46 lasts. Um, and everything else that you look for when looking up 1060 is mostly
10:52 1070s. And looking at the
10:55 Amazon.com prices for these things in my
10:59 video, I said that I didn't think they were going to be near the 249 USD price
11:04 point because of what I saw with the 1070 and the 1080, right? and I was
11:08 slammed by certain people because there was an official price list released that
11:12 had them closer to the 249 price point. But what I said in the video was that I
11:16 didn't think that the 1060 and the 480 should even necessarily be compared that
11:20 closely because the 480 is 200 bucks and the 1060 is probably going to be around
11:25 300. So looking at Amazon.com, not.ca,
11:29 there is the EVGA GeForce 1060 currently
11:32 sitting at $339 and there's only one of them. And
11:36 this posting is from EVGA. Um, there is
11:40 a Gigabyte GeForce 1060 G1 gaming
11:44 edition for $346. Okay. There is Are you looking at CA
11:50 or.com? Okay. So, US pricing. Zotac AMP
11:53 edition. I sure wish we could share your 345. You could do this. It's really No,
11:57 no, it's okay. Um, basically my point is
12:01 the prices for all these things are just like whimsical imaginations of
12:06 possibility. Like the what what is it?
12:09 My my brother was trying to look at the 1080 stricks and right now in Canada
12:13 it's like $1,300 or something really.
12:17 It's just like holy crap. What the hell?
12:21 Like these cards are in such low stock
12:24 that I think what's happening is retailers are just like, "Well, we're
12:27 sold out for forever, so we might as well just crank the price up." You know,
12:31 it's interesting because that kind of thing didn't used to really happen. I
12:37 mean, I worked at a retailer for a lot
12:40 of wow, I don't know, 6 years or something like that. And so, I saw the
12:45 behind the scenes of what actually goes
12:48 on with a product launch like this. And you know the consumer you know loves to
12:53 hate and say you guys are gouging you're doing this and you know the reality of
12:57 it would be that the Canadian dollar had dropped 5% in the last four days or
13:02 something like that and you know ultimately we were just losing money on
13:07 everything that we had sold before we adjusted pricing because we would get
13:13 paid in or sorry we would have to pay in US dollars but we would get paid by the
13:18 customer in CAD. So you had to kind of guess because you're on net 30 anywhere
13:23 from net 30 to net 60 terms. So in
13:26 actual fact normally NCIX was pretty
13:30 darn close to whatever the normal markup
13:34 was supposed to be once converted from US to Canadian and then with you know a
13:38 few percentage points on top so that you're actually making a little bit of
13:41 money. And what I'll say about the board partners is that when it comes to the
13:46 vanilla cards, they might opt not to
13:50 make as many basic cards as they
13:53 potentially could, right? EVGA could take every single GTX 1080 that comes
13:58 into the door, every single GPU, and they could put it on their lowest cost
14:02 card, and they could sell them all at the lower price. or they could, you
14:08 know, at least supply some of those so that the people who want a deal on
14:12 something that's not a super clock or a KO edition or an AACSX Plus or Kingpin
14:17 or whatever else, so those guys can get a card if they're willing to wait a
14:21 little bit. And then I would put as much of my stock as I can based on what'll
14:25 hit those clock speeds into the ones that I can sell for a higher price. And
14:29 that is the way that video card makers
14:33 generally mark something up by having a
14:36 different skew, not by just hiking up
14:39 the price of a card. There have been exceptions to be very clear. 8800 GT
14:46 went up from from the top like from the
14:50 from the very beginning of the supply chain. To my knowledge, and I don't have
14:54 any confirmation of this, so you guys don't quote me on it, but to my
14:58 knowledge, NVIDIA jacked the price and the board partners jacked the price.
15:02 Colton, can I borrow you for a minute? And retailers were somewhat
15:06 opportunistic on that particular card as well. And the same thing may be happening. Do you mind grabbing my um
15:11 power adapter? My laptop is going to die very, very soon. It's just in the main
15:14 pocket there. Thank you. I didn't know where you were going with that. Also, um
15:20 Yeah. I'd like to I'd like to give you an opportunity to uh here. Can you plug
15:24 that into the back of the UPS first, though? I' I I feel like it's only fair
15:27 to give you an opportunity to defend yourself because we talk a lot of smack.
15:31 Okay. What do you What do you What am I defending myself on? We talk a lot a lot
15:34 of smack. um in the event that that it
15:38 was your word against Luke's, you know, and he was saying you stole a bunch of
15:42 stuff from the office and and you and
15:45 you pointed out to me that um actually all that stuff was on Luke's desk at
15:50 home. Do you think I should believe you who
15:54 I've only known for a little over a year? Definitely. Or should I believe or
15:57 should I as a troll? Definitely believe me. But I know you wouldn't though.
16:03 That's the thing. I would be so screwed.
16:07 So, I just got to not piss you off to make you want to do that and we'll be
16:10 good. Okay, thank you. That actually settled it. So, it turns out Luke is in
16:14 fact Colton's boss by
16:17 indirectly because we all acknowledge that Colton has to suck up to him in
16:21 order to save himself. Okay. Thank you, Colton. You're wonderful. We appreciate
16:25 you very much. Just Yeah, it closes the door. Okay. So, I did some more
16:30 investigating. Okay. I went on neweag.com. Not only if you look for GTX
16:35 1060 is literally everything on the
16:38 first page and I think there's Yep, there's only one page. Every single item
16:43 is listed as out of stock, but a lot of
16:47 the prices are actually pretty normal, but they're all out of stock. You can't
16:51 buy any of them. If you go to RX480, same thing. Or they're like
16:56 computers and stuff or completely unrelated products, which is weird.
17:00 Maybe you should work on your algorithm. New egg. When I literally type in RX480,
17:05 I'm not talking about a uh Mazda RX8 air
17:09 conditioning AC cooling parallel flow condenser assembly. That's not what I'm
17:14 looking for. Anyways, uh one of them has
17:18 stock of two items and it's let me find
17:22 it again. Give me one second. Where'd it
17:27 go? There. It's $49 for a $200 graphics card.
17:34 What? I am so like
17:39 how I am trying to get us uh I'm trying
17:42 to get us an input so you can screen share because I'm personally really
17:45 appreciating this like real time shopping study. But I'm I'm even like
17:51 mostly done. But my my problem is how am I even really supposed to compare these
17:55 cards? Because at this point, one of the manufacturers could be like, "It's 50
18:00 bucks there. Do your price comparisons. We win." Then you go to the store and
18:05 it's like, "Nope, it's $400." I hope they can hear us. What? Oh, okay. Okay.
18:12 Hold on. Hold on. I got an idea. No,
18:15 that's not the right idea. Can they hear us? I don't know. I don't know. I don't
18:21 know. No video. I don't know. Everything is scary right now. Everything is scary.
18:27 Video output. Um Um Um I don't I don't
18:31 know. We can hear. We can They can hear. They can hear. I don't know what I'm looking at. I don't know if I plugged it
18:36 into the right thing. Go on. Scream along with Lionus even though we can't
18:39 hear you. Just do it at home. Just
18:44 shut up. Why are you being mean to me?
18:49 No, it was Colton. Oh, Colton. I wasn't being mean to you. Oh, you're right.
18:55 I don't know why I didn't realize it was So, you're just so smart. That's why you
18:59 ended up figuring it out, though. Not everything has to come to you immediately cuz you're you're just
19:03 dealing with so many things at once. Um, so I'm on a completely different level.
19:08 Yeah. Oh, can you plug that in? That might have something to do with it. Uh,
19:12 the HDMI cable for your laptop. Really? Yeah. I'm trying to That might be That
19:16 might be part of the reason why loop screen capture is not um is I didn't
19:21 even know we were trying to do loop screen capture. Yeah. Yeah. I'm trying to I'm trying to get I'm trying to get
19:25 you uh I'm trying to get you back up and running here. Okay. So, my computer has
19:28 done the freakout thing, so we're ready to go. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
19:32 Everything's on duplicate. Yeah. Okay.
19:35 Yeah. No. Okay. Yeah. No. Okay.
19:42 Yeah. Yeah. No. Okay. Yeah. No. Okay.
19:47 This sounds like a phone conversation with like that guy that just really
19:51 doesn't care about what's going on on the other end.
19:54 Yeah. No. Okay, let's be back now. Oh,
20:01 see, I think I was plugging to the right thing in the first place, but Oh, dear.
20:04 I I think like like I'm I'm done. I think I said everything that Okay. Yeah.
20:11 No. Okay. Well, why don't you talk Why don't
20:14 you talk 1060 now? I was talking 1060
20:18 the whole time. Oh, okay. You're done. Anyways, it's it's I'll I'll give a
20:22 brief overview of what I said. It's very difficult. Well, did you talk like specs
20:25 at all or do we care? I was going to finish that part of the conversation
20:28 before time. Okay. Can I jump in with something that I had wanted to add? So,
20:33 it with respect to the the pricing conversation. So, Sapphire actually sent
20:37 me uh ND Oh. Oh, yeah. Okay. The NDA
20:41 lifted like uh 6 hours ago. Perfect. Sweet. So, they have a Nitro Plus RX480
20:46 because we wanted to talk about like how the pricing of these cards might kind of
20:50 creep together depending on if you compare a low-end or creep apart or
20:55 creep apart or whatever based on like crazy pricing in different areas. But my
21:00 point was that usually in the US you have the most stable pricing structure
21:04 because that's where they're making their initial pricing, but it's just
21:08 complete lunacy in the US, meaning it's even more crazy. So tell me this. The 4
21:12 gig RX480, you know, whatever. Nitro X is
21:17 $220. Okay. MSRP. Yeah. The 8 gig is $270.
21:23 What would you buy? Do you find the cheapest 1060 you can find or do you buy
21:28 a high-end RX 480?
21:33 Uh, from my experience so far, it it
21:36 depend. Can you actually get them at that price?
21:40 Because that was what I was just talking about is not only is everything sold out
21:44 in general, so you can't even buy it if you wanted to, but the prices of them is
21:50 crazy as well, right? So like the
21:53 pricing that they're sending in the email, is that actually real? Because
21:57 right now on Newegg, the only available 480 is over $400,
22:02 right? So it's it's four uh where is it?
22:06 Give me one second. I keep on losing it. Out of stock. Out of stock. Out of
22:10 stock. Out of stock. Out of stock. Out of stock. $49 is the only one
22:17 that's currently not out of stock. It's a Vision Tech card. Okay. There are
22:22 additional pages. I haven't looked into the additional pages, but I did one
22:25 entire page of products. Decided that was probably enough. All right. So, um I
22:30 guess so, so basically our our usual guidance remains true. event, we
22:35 generally recommend sticking with
22:40 uh the the higherend card versus buying a high-end of a lower-end GPU. Yeah.
22:45 Okay, fine. But like if you can even get
22:48 it. Let's talk high-end cards. NVIDIA announces the new GTX Titan X, which
22:55 they're calling NVIDIA Titan X. Now, I could probably go off Oh, I was going to
23:00 have you leave that plugged in so that I can still try things. Um, I could
23:04 probably go off on a rant for a good solid 10 minutes, however long you want,
23:09 about naming things the same thing that
23:12 they were already named when they are a completely different product or saying
23:16 new. Yes. Or whatever, like the new, you
23:19 know, it's it's like it's like everyone took everything that was wrong with
23:24 shampoo marketing and you know, now with 33%
23:28 more 33% more than what? 33% more of
23:33 what? What am I comparing this to? Is it a product from last month? Is it a
23:37 product from four years ago? What is their 30 one? How do I understand this?
23:42 One thing that I do understand in terms of that naming, the only time that I
23:45 think it actually made sense was Battlefield 1.
23:50 Really? Because they went back.
23:53 Okay. So, that sort of made sense. I'm still not a huge fan of it, but this is
23:59 different. This isn't a reboot. This is a sequel. No, I'm not saying it's okay
24:04 here. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Okay. No. No. We're agreeing that it's not okay
24:08 here because there's a lot of things that are confusing about this. It's
24:11 confusing for retailers because SEO is
24:15 hard enough when you don't have to. Basically, the only way that I can think
24:19 of to fix your SEO from old generation
24:22 Titan X versus new generation Titanex is manually. Like you will basically have
24:27 to go into your backend and go okay if
24:32 Titan X created before you know what they should do then do not return result
24:37 before created after X like that's they
24:40 should uh replace their product pages.
24:45 The problem is that the pricing is different. A uh the other problem is
24:50 that you might be looking it up for a warranty return. the other no they
24:54 should replace their product pages and then remake but with the old cards so
24:58 you can still find it but the SEO linking through Google and everything is
25:02 still really popular. That's actually a smart way to take advantage of this. I
25:05 guarantee no one will do it but and because you should still have your
25:09 product page with the old card for warranty reasons and everything that you said. Like NCX for example, I know for a
25:13 fact there's no mechanism for them to do that. Like that is not a thing. That
25:18 won't be a thing that they'll be able to do. Um so okay, so it's cruise over the
25:22 retailer. Okay. It screws over the reviewer because it makes it so that
25:26 instead of me just saying Titan P or Titan XP or PX or if we had called it
25:32 something that had made an ounce of sense, I have to say Titan X 2016
25:37 edition. Like I have to clarify. If you gave us Titan XP, there could have been
25:42 all the like little smiley face jokes and stuff and that could have been pretty cool by the way. And that would
25:46 have been that would have been way better. Yeah. Anyway, okay. We should just call it the Titan XP from now on.
25:51 I'm down. I'm I'm down to do it. I will literally call it that throughout the
25:54 entire review. I will do that, too. Cool. We are calling it the Titan XP
25:58 from now on. You heard it here first. It is the Titan XP. It is the Titan XP.
26:01 Okay. The third person that this screws over and the one that gets screwed over
26:06 the most is the consumer.
26:09 You are basically making it impossible
26:13 for the consumer to understand from reading reviews, googling reviews,
26:17 comparing pricing what exactly it is they're buying unless they are an
26:22 extraordinarily savvy consumer who really keeps up with the industry by
26:26 watching fantastic programming like the WAN Show on a weekly basis. That is the
26:31 only way that you will know that one Titan X is different from another more
26:36 different Titan X. Oh, someone in the chat even just said win XP with the
26:40 Titan XP, right? Like, holy crap, those marketing
26:45 campaigns write themselves. Why did you do this? You had such an opportunity. I
26:48 know. We used all the XP that we had building amazing GPUs and we turned out
26:53 this beast. I NVIDIA leveled up. It's
26:56 endless. There's so many. Level up your game. Oh, it's perfect. It's amazing.
27:01 They need to rename this card. They do. They have to rename this card like right
27:05 now. They need to Okay, here's what they need to do. Okay, NVIDIA, if you guys
27:09 are watching, you take the Titan X 2016
27:12 editions that you have now, and you turn them into kind of like like a coin with
27:16 two-tail sides. Like anyone who bought one or got a giveaway like right at the
27:20 beginning. Wow. Okay, they have like this weird It's almost like a misprint.
27:24 Okay, so they have like this weird one that like had the wrong name on it. You
27:27 just change all the shrouds to Titan XP moving forward. Okay, you got to retool
27:31 it. I'm sorry that costs a little bit of money. You're NVIDIA. can afford it and
27:35 the Titan XP is the actual name of the product and everyone's like talking
27:39 about it. It would be awesome. You should do it. That that would be you
27:42 won't but you should because it would be better for absolutely everyone because
27:46 this is really confusing for consumers and it's totally unfair. It's already
27:50 confusing enough when video card manufacturers take two of the same
27:55 product and call it something different. Rebadging is terrible and confusing for
28:00 consumers. Now you're taking it a step further and now you might have two
28:05 different products that are called the same thing. You're basically just saying, "I
28:10 don't really want anyone to understand what it is. I want people to just walk
28:15 into a store and have a saleserson sell them the most expensive thing that they
28:18 can." That's the message that I'm getting from this and I don't like it.
28:22 And speaking of the most expensive thing that they can, the Titan XP is going to
28:27 cost $1,200 when it's available August 2nd
28:32 directly from NVIDIA. And my bridging point, Wow. back from uh the 1060 stuff
28:39 is you're Okay. You're buying Titan X's August 2nd from NVIDIA. Sure. Down the
28:44 line when they stop doing that. You mean XPs? Oh, yeah. Sorry. XPS. Um I screwed
28:49 up. I called a last generation card. My bad. Um, I'm still I'm still in last
28:52 year. Uh, what happens later on? Are
28:56 they going to be $1,600? You already price hiked by 200.
29:00 In the 1060 review at the very beginning, I have a chart showing how
29:03 every one of their new GPUs has been price hiked by a hundred bucks. This is
29:07 by 200 bucks. Now, this is something that you may not have been paying
29:12 attention for long enough to know, but
29:16 NVIDIA actually has not I would say
29:20 NVIDIA and AATI/AMD, because that's how far back
29:23 this goes, have not actually been that
29:27 unreasonable about the way that they have done the pricing of their extreme
29:32 top tier hardware. And I will I will explain I will explain why I'm saying
29:37 that. I like that EVGA logo because uh Oh yeah, that's really old. That's back
29:41 when they were EVGA.com and it was always eva.com. They
29:46 actually that was like part of the branding. Um so let me see if I can find
29:50 So the the 6800 Ultra Extreme was
29:55 basically vaporware. Um and if you're going to build a card that you're
29:59 basically saying um let me see if I can
30:02 find a reference to pricing here with benchmark. If you're building
30:07 a card that you're basically saying, yeah, it's going to be available from our site.
30:12 Um, only then something something
30:15 something. Yeah, you're basically saying like it's it's pretty much a Vaporware
30:19 card. Uh, let me find it. You can expect to pay upwards of $600 for a card of
30:25 this caliber and we were unable to locate a retailer that had them in stock
30:28 at the moment. Oh, 6800 Ultra Extremes
30:32 went for kind of getting somewhat close
30:36 to the like, you know, $800, $900 range.
30:40 And the 8800 Ultra was actually a pretty
30:43 similar story. Ultra price at launch. Let me just see if I can find it. Uh,
30:49 okay. So, the 8800 Ultra was priced at $830 and that was released back in 2007.
30:56 So, let's use an inflation calculator.
31:00 Okay. Inflation calculator. I'm going to use the Bank of Canada one if that's
31:04 okay with everyone. How do you use here? So, I'm gonna We'll go ahead. We'll do
31:07 this live. So, in 2007, something that cost uh what was
31:12 it? 839. 839. Well, I can type a thing.
31:15 Tap 839 would cost
31:19 calculate. Okay. So, they weren't being unreasonable before. Back when I did the
31:24 math based on that Titan X is $1,000.
31:28 Yeah. Because Well, I mean, I'm not saying that an $839 card in 2007 wasn't
31:32 unreasonable. It was. I'm just saying that um Okay. I don't We're actually
31:37 tracking. Okay. But they've jumped ahead by $200 this time. So, you're right. And
31:40 I was right um like two days ago. Okay.
31:44 Yeah. How about that? We're both right. Okay. Sure. Sure. I think the problem
31:49 that people have is jumping by $100 on
31:53 XX60 and XX70 and XX80 and jumping by
31:57 $200 on Titan doesn't feel like an inflation adjustment. If they adjusted
32:02 by little bits every time, it would feel more like inflation adjustments. Now, I
32:06 understand that you don't want really weird pricing numbers on your products,
32:09 but that's what people are feeling when you do that. They're feeling that one
32:13 chunk jump and it doesn't feel great.
32:17 Feels bad, man. So, you can actually see here that that probably the last time
32:22 they did this then was with the 8800 Ultra because here's our six I remember
32:27 these costing more though. Um 6800 Ultra Extremes, they're stupid. You basically
32:31 couldn't buy them. Um but they they did a fairly significant jump there and it
32:35 looks like they've taken another leap forward in terms of the rel the value of
32:39 a GPU like a an ultimate gaming experience relative to eggs and milk. Uh
32:45 once again, and I think ultimately the
32:48 person that we have to blame for this, or not person, but the entity that we
32:52 have to blame for this is AMD. You know, I'm not going to like crap on AMD
32:56 because they're having a hard enough time as it is with the things that are
32:59 difficult for them, which is apparently everything. Um but if AMD was keeping
33:04 NVIDIA in check, then at the high end.
33:08 Okay. So, you know, to be clear, 480 looks like a very successful product and
33:14 AMD did a really I think it was a smart
33:17 move coming in and saying, "Okay, look, we're not going to go toe-to-toe with
33:21 NVIDIA this time." Yep. I said that straight up in the review. We're going to hit we're going to we're going to
33:25 come from the bottom while NVIDIA can spend all that money that's associated
33:29 with building the biggest GPU ever, which they did. Yeah. and they can
33:34 trickle that technology down and we're just going to build what we think is the
33:38 right thing at the right price from the outset. Fair strategy. I have a video
33:42 coming just so people know. Um I'm not
33:46 going to go like too into it because I want you to watch the video, but I have
33:49 a video coming on uh the 480 and VR and
33:53 like how well positioned that card actually is in terms of performance even
33:58 more than price. how you can just get this card and be fine for like what
34:02 almost anyone is really gonna want. Yeah. And then there will be percentages
34:06 of people that want more than that. But it's like it is a problem solver which
34:10 is exactly what they needed. So I just I
34:13 mean I still I would have personally preferred to see AMD have a you know
34:19 Fury XP or whatever would go headto-head
34:22 with a Titan XP. Um because that is the
34:26 kind of thing that keeps pressure on NVIDIA not to do this kind of thing and
34:31 they just didn't Yeah. They just they just
34:37 didn't they didn't do it. Yeah. I mean
34:40 there's there's still time for Polaris to to go headtohead with with Pascal and
34:45 so I'm I'm looking forward to that because that should at least force
34:48 NVIDIA to react and
34:51 uh yeah I I don't know. I guess I'm I'm kind of out of stuff to say about this.
34:56 Okay, there's a new Titan X, 11 teraflops, um 12 billion transistors, 30
35:01 3584 CUDA cores, up to 60% faster than
35:04 previous Titan X. Cool. Um people are a little upset that it's uh GDDR5X
35:11 instead of uh HBM2. Yep. I'm a little
35:14 upset, but I totally get why they're doing it. They're just kind of going it
35:18 doesn't matter. And they're right. It doesn't matter. Um, so screw it. We're
35:23 going to make a little bit more margin. Wait for HBM2 to mature a little bit.
35:27 Um, right now it's can just be a low volume part and we'll just keep that in
35:31 our in our um scientific computing
35:34 cards. Keep that in the Teslas. Fine.
35:37 So, I get it. I mean, memory overclocking hasn't done anything on a
35:41 video card in a very, very, very long time. And I'm sure that NVIDIA has done
35:46 all the research that is required to decide if it's worth it or not. because
35:50 apparently the GPU itself does support HBM2. So they just decided to pair it
35:54 with GDDR5X. One thing that I'm frustrated about frustrated with which
35:58 almost no one is going to be able to sympathize sympathize with me for is
36:03 it's being sold on August the
36:07 2nd. We heard about it the same day you guys did. I don't have one. I don't How
36:14 am I feels bad, man supposed to review this before the release date? We should,
36:19 we've been talking about this. So, we've actually been talking about doing this
36:22 before. We should review the card before we have the card.
36:27 Yeah, because there have been cards where Luke and I have sat down and gone,
36:31 "Okay, uh, card's coming. We haven't been briefed on it. We don't have a
36:34 deck. We don't have any specs. We have no driver. We have no card. We have nothing." And we basically go, "Okay,
36:39 it's going to be like this, and it's going to be like that, and it's going to
36:43 be kind of like this, and here's the conclusion." And we should just release
36:47 our full review of it. So, we should not sign an NDA. We should not accept a
36:51 review unit. And we should release a review the day before. Oh my god.
36:55 Without a card. That could be fun. It would be easier with a xx number card.
37:02 Yeah. Than a Titan. Yeah. A Titan would be a little difficult. Like it's easier
37:06 when they're taking an existing lineup and they're kind of slotting something in. Yeah. Yeah. Like Okay. It would be
37:11 pretty easy for us to do that with like a 1080 Ti. Yes. 1080 would be pretty
37:16 easy. Uh the 1080 would have been pretty easy. Y the except for in VR. The 1070
37:22 would have been pretty easy and the 1060 like I knew it before it even happened.
37:27 AMD cards are usually particularly easy, especially when they're the same card
37:30 that we reviewed a year ago. Um boom.
37:34 480 would have not they would have not been able to do it. No idea what was
37:38 coming. I got to give them props. They kept that secret. They did. I I did not
37:42 know what was coming. Um, but yeah, like I unless one shows up
37:47 on like Monday. Oh, I got so sorry. Someone asked a
37:52 question. No, I did not ditch my blade. Um, I'm working on a review of Gigabytes
37:56 uh Arrow 14, which is kind of like what
38:00 I would call Okay, don't take this the wrong way because it's still a very
38:03 expensive computer, but I'm going to call it a poor man's blade. So, it's But
38:07 that that that's considering that the blade is like the dude that owns a
38:11 yacht. So, it's not really the poor man's blade. It's a relatively speaking
38:14 poor man's blade relative to the dude that owns a yacht. Yes. Which is like
38:18 everyone. Yes. Okay. So, uh there's a lot of things I like about it. There's a
38:22 lot of things I don't like as much about it, but um yeah. Okay. Let's move on to
38:28 uh actually we should probably do our sponsor spots. I can't believe we just spent like half the show on the first
38:33 two topics. So, first up is I fix it.
38:37 iFixit recently got mad at me and I guess during their sponsor spot is the
38:41 best time to bring that up. They gave me well they gave Nick crap and Nick gave
38:46 me crap because every time every time I
38:50 pull out an iFix it kit for a phone repair or for a disassembly vlog or
38:55 whatever the case may be, every time I pull one out, I pull out the old Protek
39:00 tool kit with the 54-bit driver kit and
39:04 they're just like, "Dude, what are you doing?
39:10 You're sponsored by iFixit and you're using the old kit all the time. And the
39:14 funny thing is is I take flak from the viewers about obvious product placement
39:17 is obvious. iFixit doesn't want me to do that. They don't want to pay me to use
39:20 the old product that you can't even buy anymore. They ain't interested in that.
39:26 Um, so this is cool. I don't know if you know this, but iFixit is actually
39:30 sending us upgraded protect tool kits
39:33 with embroidered names on them. So you're getting one. I'm getting one with
39:38 my name embroidered on. Anyway, the reason that I always had the old kit was because I took the 64-bit one home
39:43 because here I have a lot more tools at my disposal than I do at home. So, and
39:47 then every time we do an iFixit spot, I run around trying to find it and then
39:50 it's missing. Yeah. No, I I'd only told him like weeks and weeks after I had uh
39:55 after I had taken it home anyway. Then I'd forget and go run around try to find
39:59 it. Anyways, the latest Protek Toolkit has their new 64-bit driver kit, which
40:04 means that you can have over 4 gigs of RAM. It's got
40:10 Sorry. Um, sorry. It has more bits. It
40:14 has more durable parts. It has a better screwdriver that's easier to apply more
40:18 torque with. Um, it's got their ESD safe tweezers. It's got the metal spudger.
40:23 It's got suction cups to pull apart displays. All kinds of great stuff. It's
40:27 backed by iFixit's lifetime warranty. And if you use offer code when on iFixit
40:33 site, you can save $5 on a purchase of $10 or more. And we should probably get
40:38 that lower third updated because that is not correct. That is an old offer code.
40:42 I'm very sorry to iFixit and Nick. I'm
40:46 not sorry to Nick, but I'm sorry to fix it. Hopefully they don't they don't hate
40:49 us forever. Actually, we may be doing like a like a sponsored video with them.
40:55 Oh. sometime soon where we'll be taking something taking something apart in a
41:00 really cool way and putting it back together in a really cool way like for
41:03 them like uh they're like sponsoring us to do something that I've wanted to do
41:08 for a long time but that I've never been able to do because it's extraordinarily
41:12 timeconuming and expensive um so they're they're basically footing the bill for
41:16 it. So cool guys. We love those guys that I fixed it. Yay. Uh, this is
41:22 interesting that no one sort of briefed me on this because I actually have
41:27 clothing from Ministry of Supply that I wore last week. All the comments on the
41:31 video were like, "Wow, you and Nick look so professional this week compared to
41:35 how you guys usually look on the WAN Show." And I think I screwed up the spot
41:40 for them. So, I think we're redoing it again this week, but nobody told me, so
41:44 I don't have the clothes. But the good news is I did wear them last week. I
41:49 wore a beautiful button-up shirt and I actually was wearing pants on the WAN
41:52 show for a change. Something that is uh not usually the experience that is going
41:57 on under the table here. Yeah, that would have been pretty surprising. So, Ministry Ministry of Supply combines
42:02 performance fabrics, advanced manufacturing techniques, and tailored
42:05 design to make wear to work clothes that are comfortable and capable. They're
42:09 meant to be worn on the body, which is good because they have to look good on
42:14 the floor, too. Yeah, they gota
42:19 Wow, they're not gonna like this spot either. The products keep you cool and
42:23 dry with sweat wicking fibers, breathable fabrics, and NASA developed
42:27 phase change materials that help regulate your body temperature, and most
42:30 importantly for our audience, everything is easy to care for. Throw it in the
42:35 washing machine, throw it in the dryer. That's important for me. Oo,
42:39 wrinkle-free even out of the bag. So, it was like all folded up like Colton
42:43 handed me a folded collared shirt and was like, "Wear this on the show today."
42:46 And I was like, "You have got to be kidding me. I'm gonna look like the
42:51 biggest like there there was there's a wedding this weekend and I went and
42:55 bought a shirt at the mall on Friday, idiot with like creases down my shirt."
43:00 Actually, it was fine. Yeah. So, there's no risk to try. There's free shipping
43:04 and returns with a 100-day hassle-free return policy. And it is the perfect
43:09 gift for anyone with a birthday or a
43:12 thing that you might need to give them a gift for. My notes still say Father's Day, but that is obviously outdated. Or
43:17 if someone you know has to go to a wedding on the weekend and it's uh
43:20 coming up soon. Yes, indeedy. And you're
43:23 like, they're not going to figure this out, so I'm going to do them do this for
43:27 them because my name is Avon and their name is Lionus. I'm not going to a
43:31 wedding. I'm actually going to a funeral this weekend. And it's has to do something with clothing myself. Feels
43:35 bad, right, man? It does. Sorry. Actually, I'm going to a funeral this
43:39 weekend. I know. I'm sorry. I will look
43:42 presentable at it, though. I started making the joke and then I was like, crap. This is way more applicable than I
43:47 thought. Oops. Oh, dang. That's okay.
43:51 Facebook wants to deliver high-speed internet everywhere via freaking lasers.
43:56 Laser beams. Laser beams. Y I mean to be
44:00 clear the idea of internet with with
44:04 lasers is actually not that out there.
44:08 In fact your internet travels over lasers for sure. Fiber fiber at some
44:16 point. Some people can be like I don't have fiber. At some point at some point
44:20 if you connect to a website that is not
44:23 like in your house friend hosting it. Yeah. your friend hosting it down the
44:27 street.
44:31 Like, well, actually, Lus, um,
44:36 I ran a internet cable to like my my neighbor's house and then we have a a
44:41 localized website for checking out what games we both have because Steam is like
44:45 there's too much DRM and stuff.
44:49 That could happen. Maybe the the worst
44:52 part is someone watching our stream has definitely done it.
44:57 Like when I was going to explode with like I did it when I was in university.
45:01 Uh I put my computer in my neighbor's dorm room cuz we liked gaming in there
45:06 because my roommate was a douche canoe. Um but I had the good internet. So we
45:10 ran the internet from my room out my window into his window and then would
45:14 game. And when it was really cold outside I was like next to the window
45:18 but I like the cold. So, we just keep the window open so we could keep fast
45:21 internet speeds. Nice game. I like that you've picked up douche canoe because I
45:26 picked up broke dick from you. So,
45:30 there we go. All right. So, the system uses
45:35 invisible infrared laser beams that switch on and off several billion times
45:39 per second to exchange data while consuming minimal energy. So, basically
45:43 the same as fi fiber optic internet
45:47 except that it goes through the air. So, Facebook is working on a means of delivering. Okay, that is basically the
45:52 headline. Thank you. The project has taken a step forward after a first test
45:56 delivered connection speeds over 2 Gbit per second. So, according to an article
46:00 penned by four members of Facebook's connectivity lab published in the
46:03 scientific journal Optica, the plan is to deliver these high-speed internet
46:06 connections using laser beams to the most remote possible locations. However,
46:12 high levels of precision are required to line up the laser correctly. So they
46:16 have to aim the beam with precision equivalent to hitting a dime from more
46:20 than 10 miles away.
46:23 So that's a cool thought experiment. The system also needs to support temperature
46:29 differences of up to 90° C.
46:33 See the hitting the dime from 10 miles away thing that thing that worries me
46:37 with that is like weather. Yeah. And
46:41 other things that just happen. Really anything that could happen. Rebel
46:44 insurrection. ental plate movement. Yeah. Like that's actually a factor at a
46:48 distance of 10 miles away. Like did you see that sinkhole on 200th Street? Yeah.
46:53 I have to drive. Like there's just a sinkhole.
46:56 What the hell, man? Okay. The middle of a thair. Things just happen. The the
47:01 moon moves, the the waters rise and lower, the continental plates shift.
47:05 There's there's lots of things that affect the positioning of things on the planet more than you might realize. All
47:09 right, speaking of the position of things on the planet, the Hollywood
47:13 Reporter is apparently our source for us looks to prosecute the owner of kickass
47:18 Torrance after arrest in Poland. Yeah, that's one of the things that's different about this laptop. Doesn't
47:22 have a touch screen. I went to zoom in and reposition
47:28 it. I do look forward to having the blade back, but this is a pretty sick
47:31 notebook. I'm my review is going to be very positive. Um, all right. So, the US
47:36 is looking to prosecute Ardum Valin,
47:39 alleged owner of Kickass Torrance, after his arrest in Poland. They've announced
47:43 that they charged him with conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and money
47:47 laundering in connection with the operation of Kickass Torrance. In a
47:52 press release, the law enforcement calls Kickass Torrance the most visited
47:56 illegal filesharing website with 50
47:59 million unique monthly visitors. It is the 69th most visited website on the
48:04 internet, which is so delicious. Oh my goodness. Um, and it is allegedly
48:09 responsible for enabling users to distribute films, TV shows, and video
48:14 games valued at more than $1 billion. That's probably conservative. If you
48:18 value each discrete download as the full
48:21 cash value of that, that's definitely conservative if that's how you do it.
48:24 Yeah, it was very, very conservative. Apple and Facebook actually helped the
48:28 US in the investigation and release. Um, so an Apple email belonging to Valin was
48:34 found in a who is lookup conducted by Homeland Security. July 31st, 2015
48:39 records provided by Apple showed that the mi.com email account was used to
48:44 purchase something on iTunes. Logs showed that the same IP was then used to
48:48 access the kickass Torrance Facebook page. So he got caught because he bought
48:53 something legitimately.
48:57 I mean, I guess if I was making Wow. How many millions of dollars a month was it
49:00 that they figured it was bringing in? One of the other articles that I um that
49:04 I read was uh I I forget. It was like I
49:07 I don't know $12 million a month or something obscene. Like the amount of
49:11 money it was making was just ludicrous. The guy can afford to buy movies, music,
49:15 and videos. So, if he follows the usual the usual pirate logic of I only pirate
49:20 because I can't afford it, then hey, maybe it's a good thing he was buying things on iTunes. Um I just think you'd
49:26 go to your own store, you know? Yeah, shop at your own free store for free
49:32 wares. Yeah.
49:35 Um, so there's an update. There's a clone site of Kickass Torrent somewhere
49:40 on the web. That doesn't surprise me at all. There's a change.org petition.
49:45 Yeah, there's currently at 14,000 signatures asking for that's worth
49:49 taking time out of your day to go sign to release him. That is probably not
49:53 going to have an effect. It's up to 15,000 supporters now. And there's like
49:57 there's like a bar. It's like 9478 more needed to reach
50:03 25,000. As if 25,000 will be any different from 25 in terms of the impact
50:08 that'll have. But um there you go. Oh,
50:11 this is good. Uh recode.net is our original article here. Dollar Shave Club
50:16 just sold for $1 billion to Unilever.
50:23 $1 billion. Wow. Good old Mike, who I've
50:26 never actually met, but I feel like I know him because I've been pimping his
50:29 razors for like three years now. Good old Mike is a billionaire. He is still
50:35 going to be running the company. Um,
50:39 they were projecting more than 200 million in revenue for 2016. Dollar
50:43 Shave Club isn't profitable, but he said at a conference in May that the company
50:47 could get into the black by year's end. And Unilever has basically gone, "Okay,
50:52 that's good enough for us. We're doing it.
50:56 Um, wow. So, basically, you know, he's like, "Okay,
51:01 yeah, I'm going to keep running it. We we had, you know, good synergy, you
51:06 know, talking with each other. The economies of scale they can bring in
51:09 will change our business a lot." And that's true. I mean, I've had people
51:13 point out that Dollar Shave Club's razors can be purchased in bulk, not
51:17 from Dollar Shave Club, if you don't want a weekly delivery. And the reality
51:21 of it is is people join Dollar Shave Club. So set so it's set it and forget
51:26 it. Not so they can save 22 cents per blade or whatever the difference works
51:30 out to. I can't remember how much it was. I did look into it. Um so for
51:34 Dollar Shave Club to be able to potentially I mean with the resources
51:38 that Unilever can throw at it, they could to advertise more to develop
51:42 products faster, develop more unique products, it could end up being a good
51:47 investment for Unilever even though it's not even profitable yet. Yeah. and even
51:51 more lucrative for Mike in the long term
51:55 because the company could bring in so much profit. So overall, hey,
52:00 congratulations you guys and uh the next bill we send you is going to be double
52:06 now that you got big boy dollars. That would be nice. What I want them to do, I
52:10 would really appreciate this. I don't know how they would make make this work
52:13 in their model or something, but I want someone to make a good trimmer. A good
52:18 trimmer. Oh, good luck. They all are terrible. Good luck. I spent a very
52:23 annoying amount of money to just get pissed off to the point where I almost
52:26 threw it like a week ago because like it
52:30 just it was it was $100. I don't like spending money. I
52:34 know you don't. I hate it. I know you do. I sat there in the store for
52:37 literally like half an hour being like, I don't like this. And then eventually
52:41 was just like okay. Because my previous one broke and it worked somewhat okay.
52:46 So I needed a new one. Yeah. M and I was like, I want it to be good and I have
52:50 all these complaints about my previous one and this one was supposed to be good and I bought it and it's
52:54 worse. It's so bad. You might notice I
52:57 have a lot going on right now because I don't I can't return it cuz it's a
53:01 hygiene product, right? That's how they get you. Yeah, that's absolutely how
53:05 they get you. And it's so bad and I don't want to spend money on another one
53:08 cuz it's also going to be bad. And you can't use a razor for everything. To be
53:12 very clear, you can use a razor when you want down to the skin. You need to use a
53:15 body trimmer if you want to have some amount. Yeah. And I want razor down here
53:21 and razor like in here a little bit, which is what I normally do. There's no
53:25 point when the rest of the beard is this ridiculous. Um, but I want to use a
53:29 beard trimmer for the rest of it and they all are terrible. If Dollar Shave
53:34 Club came out with a beard trimmer, I it
53:37 would probably be fine and I would use it. It wouldn't have a flashlight and
53:41 whatever other stuff he says that in the thing. And that's fine. I don't even
53:45 want all the crazy different like the one I have has like millimeter control
53:48 and stuff. That's not why I bought it. I don't care. I just want it to cut hair.
53:51 Yes. Yep. Oh my goodness. Speaking of just wanting to cut hair, Gorilla Glass
53:56 5 is coming and it's more shockproof than ever. The original article here is
54:00 from the verge.com. It is meant to survive epic
54:05 smartphone drops. Dang. And then the Oh,
54:09 this is great. Filing this from a cracked phone. Good job,
54:13 Lauren. Um, so yeah, in a nutshell, blah
54:18 blah says it'll survive 80% of the time when dropped from 1.6 m. That's really
54:23 high. That's pretty freaking good. Uh, wow. So, waist height to shoulder height
54:27 is kind of what they were targeting here. They figure 2/3 of smartphone
54:31 drops happen from that height. internal probably accurate research done by
54:34 Corning showed that 85% of smartphone owners have dropped their phone at least
54:38 once in the past year. The survival rate was achieved in tests with pieces of
54:42 glass that were 6 mm thick and they make
54:45 glass as thin as4 mm. So smartphone OEMs that opt for thinner glass may see
54:49 different results. So uh that's about 5
54:53 and 1/4 ft. And to be clear, it does not account for corner drops. The testing
54:58 was done dropping flat on its face. So,
55:02 as phones continue to have smaller and smaller bezels, um I'm not sure if
55:06 there's actually much that Corning will be able to do to address that. But hey,
55:10 they got to release a new product at some point. Gorilla Glass 3 sat there as
55:13 the king of the hill forever. And Gorilla Glass 4 is kind of getting along
55:16 in the tooth. So now five with more drop
55:20 resistance in a configuration that only Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is likely to
55:26 use because everyone else thinks phones have to be like, you know, corset thin.
55:31 I like the active line. I'd rather things were like that.
55:35 All right, on the subject of kick-ass torrent, our original article here is
55:39 from Technobuffalo. Witcher 3 studio talks piracy says it was an irrelevant
55:43 factor. These guys really do love to be popular, don't they? Yeah, because I
55:48 guarantee you it was a relevant factor,
55:52 but they just they just love taking what all the other game devs are saying and
55:57 being like, you know what, but that's a positive and
56:01 smart way to go about it. It is. They get so much good press. I love it, too.
56:05 They they go with this, the privacy factor is irrelevant because we can only
56:09 convince them to do it. We totally believe in carrot, not the stick. So
56:12 they're being like, "We're the nice guys. Love us." Yeah. Love us. Give us
56:16 your money. They are doing all the nice guy things. Yep. They're not saying this
56:20 stuff and then and then loading up, you know, uh Stardock and whatever like
56:24 eight different levels. G Oh, games for Windows Live. Terrible. Yeah. So they're
56:29 they're they're doing it all right and then saying these things and I guess
56:34 correctly getting credit for it. So awesome. Also, I think Witcher 3 is the
56:38 highest rated game ever on Metacritic right now. Yeah. You sent me Hangouts
56:41 the other day. Yeah, that's bananas.
56:44 Doing good. Hell yeah. All right. Uh
56:48 Elon Musk reveals part two of the master
56:51 plan. The funny thing about the original master plan, and he says this in the um
56:56 in the part two master plan, is that Tesla's business model, for anyone who's
57:01 ever like doubted it or told them they were stupid or said that they're bad
57:05 people for making only cars that could
57:08 master, it was always on their site. and he's like, "I wrote this so that people
57:13 wouldn't criticize what we're doing. It didn't work. Oh well, here I go
57:19 again." Revealing the master plan. The thing is though, he he does say that and
57:23 he says it was like nearly useless or whatever. But he has had his like
57:29 cheering squad who did read it and he has been able to use it as a
57:33 counterargument and so it has served him in a way I think just not nearly as much
57:36 as he not as much as he hoped. Yeah. Every once in a while, you kind of go,
57:40 "Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and I'm gonna I'm gonna go full
57:44 transparency mode with my customers or my viewers or whatever else." And you
57:48 know what? Sometimes it works. I took a lot of internal flak over honest answers
57:54 episode two, how does LMG make money?
57:58 Where I had people telling me, look, like, why are we talking about this?
58:02 We're just opening up the doors for people to criticize us for making money.
58:06 something that people love criticizing us for. Yeah, I'm sorry that we're a
58:10 business. We're not Twitch streamers and I'm sorry that I'm sorry that we make money. I'm not sorry at all. And that
58:15 was the point of Honest Answers. Here are the ways we do it. I want you guys
58:18 to understand how we do it so you understand what motivates us, what
58:23 drives us, and what drives us is content
58:26 for you guys because ultimately we will make no money if we don't have you. So,
58:33 we actually do read a lot of the comments on our videos. I read probably
58:39 95% of the comments that are posted on one of our videos in the first day. I
58:43 claim that I don't, but I do. And you know what? So does Nick. And
58:49 so does Ivonne. And so do the editors. And so does John. So does Dennis. We all
58:55 care. We really do care. And we are not going to throw away our audience over,
59:01 you know, NVIDIA or Intel or Microsoft or any gigantic corporation that can
59:05 write us a check because a check is a one-time thing. An audience is something
59:10 that we can continue to engage with and interact with and that we can continue
59:14 to show brands, hey, we've got all these guys that we're talking to every day. If
59:19 you want to reach these guys, you got to talk to us and you got to do it regularly. So that's that was why I
59:24 went, "Okay, I'm going to go like full transparency mode here." Sometimes it
59:27 works. And honestly, that seemed to work really well. People seem to really get
59:32 what I was trying to say, and they understood the point of what I was
59:36 doing, and it didn't turn into a a negativity poo storm.
59:41 Okay, so sometimes it doesn't work. That was kind of where I was going. Yeah.
59:44 Anyway, here's the TLDDR of part two of the master plan. Create stunning solar
59:49 roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage.
59:53 Expand the electrical electric vehicle product line to address all major
59:57 segments, including semi-truckss and other trucks. And I wish there was a
60:00 minivan cuz I just bought a gas minivan. Um, develop a self-driving capability
60:05 that is 10 times safer than manual via
60:09 massive fleet learning. Enable your car
60:12 to make money for you when you aren't using it through ride sharing programs.
60:16 and probably they have other creative ideas. So once it's able to automatically drive, not only will you
60:21 be able to summon it, but you'll be able to go like, "Hey little buddy car thing,
60:25 I'm at work. Go just like drive people around and make me money." Yep. Go back
60:28 to my house where I'm not paying for electricity because my roof is covered in solar power, solar cells. And uh then
60:33 when you're done with that, go and uh go and pick up some dudes or recharge at a
60:37 Tesla station because that's also free. Yep. Yeah. Well, it won't it might not
60:40 be able to do that. Oh, I guess it probably could do that automatically. Yeah.
60:45 Oh man, pretty excited. The car will probably be able to talk to the Tesla
60:48 station. The car will park exactly where it needs to and then it'll just rip.
60:54 Wonderful. All right, so this is a phone
60:57 that I was actually planning to review and then I ended up sending back uh when
61:02 I realized that I that the $99 price
61:06 point is a little bit deceptive. I want to say one quick thing before we keep
61:10 going forward. Yes, I'm sure there's people I haven't looked at at all, but
61:13 I'm sure there's people in the Twitch chat going like if it goes and picks up
61:17 people by itself, they're just going to like trash the car and that's possible.
61:20 It's probably going to be a uh Uber
61:23 style app thing that you have to use and your credit card will be attached to it
61:27 and they'll have IDs attached to it and if you screw up the car, they'll just
61:30 wreck you, right? So, yeah, it's
61:34 probably fine. I mean, probably stuff
61:37 will happen. Yes, definitely stuff will
61:40 happen. Yeah, but for the most part,
61:43 maybe it'll be okay. Yeah. Um, and I mean, you could I'm sure that they're
61:47 going to I'm sure they're going to make it kind of smarter than we're thinking,
61:52 you know, like you could probably have like a trusted list of people that you're willing to share your car with
61:56 even. Oh, if that would be like family and friends rides. Like you could have
62:02 this acting like a text. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You could you could
62:05 decide what level of sharing you want to do and you and you could treat it like a
62:09 social network. So you could say friends of friends are okay. Yeah. So if you
62:14 need to borrow your buddy's truck and he has a Tesla truck and you have a Tesla
62:18 car, you can like send your car off to him for the day. Borrow his truck for
62:22 the day and then switch back later on. That's cool. You don't even have to
62:26 worry about your buddy crashing your truck. He doesn't know how to drive it
62:29 because the Tesla thing is going to drive it for it. Yep. So, like there's
62:32 there's all kinds of cool stuff and like they're going have to make Tesla trailers. Like, oh man, that's treating
62:37 it like a social network. I like that. That's smart. Like that would be so
62:40 cool. Anyway, back to the ZTE Zmax Pro.
62:44 It is a $99 phone, which absolutely blew
62:47 me away cuz it has a 1080p IPS display. It has um a Qualcomm processor. So, it's
62:53 not it's not a Snapdragon 820, let's be realistic, but it is Qualcomm. It's not
62:57 MediaTek. Um, it's got 32 gigs of storage, 2 gigs of RAM, uh, 3,400
63:03 milliamp battery. Um, like it's pretty
63:07 freaking impressive. 6-inch display. It is missing a couple things. It does not
63:12 have dualband Wi-Fi, 2.4 GHz only. It
63:15 does not have NFC. There was one other thing that really irked me. Um, and so I
63:20 was going to review the crap out of this. I was like, "Oh my goodness, I've got this in my hand. I'm like ready."
63:23 And then I realized Metro PCS. Like, I couldn't put my SIM in. It wasn't
63:26 unlocked. And they wouldn't even ZTE wasn't able to unlock it for me because
63:31 you have to have it active on a Metro PCS plan for 90 days in order to get the
63:37 $100 rebate.
63:44 Now, I'm so excited for Tesla trucks.
63:49 Um, at the prepaid. Okay. Yeah. And it
63:52 will remain at $99. This is not just an intro promo. So, okay, very impressive
63:59 phone. If you are looking for like a prepaid phone carrier and you just need
64:03 like a cheap device and then you you want to like port it over to a different
64:07 carrier later, have a look at which bands it supports. Double check. Make
64:10 sure it supports the bands of the carrier of your choice. But I would highly recommend it based on the price.
64:14 At 99 bucks, it like felt good. I didn't
64:18 test out the camera much, so I wouldn't expect it to be anything special, but it
64:22 blew me away in terms of the rest of the functionality at 99 bucks with uh NFC
64:27 being a bit of a bummer and 5 GHz Wi-Fi being like a pretty big
64:32 bummer. I had the phone actually shipped it back to them today because I was
64:36 like, "Look, I'm not reviewing this. I'm sorry." I thought it was 99 unlocked.
64:39 That's why I was like so excited. Um now I'm just like a little bit excited. So,
64:44 I'll cover it on WAN Show and I will hold up the phone, but I can't because
64:47 Jake's too efficient.
64:50 Way to go, Jake. Way to go, Jake. You jerk.
64:54 Um, I think that's pretty much all that I Oh, actually, no. I really want to I
65:00 want to do this. Techchnica.co.uk. Wearable maker Fitbit
65:04 must face lawsuit over sleep tracking claims.
65:08 They are just getting wrecked. I mean,
65:11 let's talk about fitness trackers for a minute here. I know Luke has a piece
65:15 planned where he's going to be comparing a bunch of different I don't think I want to say anything. Should I say
65:19 anything about it yet? No, because I don't know anything. Okay. And if you
65:22 don't weigh in, then you don't have to like hold anything back and I can just
65:26 say whatever and you can just sit there poker face and we won't know how true or
65:30 untrue any of it is. But basically my experience with fitness trackers is that
65:35 they spit out meaningless numbers and due to battery life constraints um are
65:40 not able to actually perform the functions that they claim to perform.
65:45 Things like sleep tracking for a device that I have to take off even once or
65:49 twice a week to charge at night is just
65:53 stupid because it's not actually getting the whole picture. And I haven't even
65:57 looked at any of my notes on this yet. So, class action laws lawsuit accusing
66:01 Fitbit of misrepresenting the ability for it to track sleep and okay and it
66:05 can move forward says a federal judge. Uh, San Francisco the San Francisco
66:10 federal lawsuit claims Fitbit materially misrepresented their packaging of their
66:14 flex product to track users hours, slept times woken up, and sleep quality. The
66:17 suit alleges false advertising, unfair trade practices, fraud, and other
66:21 claims. Yeah, it could still be dismissed, but
66:26 um I mean there at some point, you know, fitness tracker wearers, wearable makers
66:32 who for the most part, as far as I can tell, are just kind of not doing enough
66:36 R&D on all of this stuff. Um we're going
66:39 to get taken to task and it looks like it's happening now. I'm I'm just going
66:43 to what I'll say for now is that I think
66:46 you're pretty close.
66:50 End of an era. Original article from CDV
66:53 News. Japan to manufacture the last ever
66:58 VCR this summer. So if you want a VCR
67:02 brand new, now is the time to get it. Wonder who's going to get the last
67:06 manufactured VCR ever. Funi Electric Company is the last remaining Japanese
67:11 manufacturer of VCR devices. Uh they've sold under various names like Sano in
67:15 North America and they've been making VHS recorders since 1983.
67:20 They reported sales of 750,000 video recorders worldwide in
67:25 2015. And uh this is pretty much it.
67:29 There was actually a pretty good summary of you know what VHS was for those of
67:33 you who are fairly young and don't really remember it. Um but going back
67:38 going back in time, Philips and Sony presented their first realtore video
67:41 tape recorders in the 1960s and the first home devices followed in the 1970s
67:46 and were actually showcased at CES. Several formats sprung up over the years
67:51 to compete in the consumer market. Sony's Betamax and the widely adopted
67:54 VHS developed by JVC. It launched officially in 1976 with the first
67:59 compatible recorders released in Japan before rolling out worldwide. VHS
68:03 cassettes could record between 30 minutes and 5 hours of video footage.
68:07 And over time, VCR recorders were even capable of doubling this capacity,
68:11 recording up to 10 hours on a single cassette. Although considered better
68:14 quality, Betamax never managed to rival the VHS format. And uh actually at the
68:19 end of 2015, Sony announced it would stop selling Betamax cassettes
68:22 commercially this year as well. It's
68:26 over an end of an era. And actually that leads us into yet another topic that we
68:30 really have to cover. An era that just won't end. The WRT 54GL. How many have
68:37 you owned? How many have I owned? I have never owned one. Or bought for someone
68:42 else. I bought one. Okay, that's it. I
68:45 bought one for someone else and that's that's it.
68:50 Um, in terms of recommending at a store that I worked at, my number is I don't
68:55 even know. If we want to talk about that, mine's a lot higher. Yeah,
68:58 probably. That's true. Yeah. Um, but ludicrous amounts. And I've bought for
69:03 myself or like friends and family. I think four.
69:07 So, it was released in 2005, which when
69:11 we talk about in terms of technology products is ridiculous. Yes. Um, it's a
69:16 54 megabit per second router. It's wireless G. I mean, it's not even dual
69:21 band. Like, why do people still want this? Well, the open source firmware,
69:26 the reliability make it attractive. You
69:29 can buy a new router for less money. Get the benefit of modern standards,
69:33 expansion into the 5 GHz band, and data rates more than 20 times higher. So, the
69:38 54GL costs around 43 bucks US on Amazon. But despite this, people are buying it
69:43 in large enough numbers that Lynxis continues to earn millions of dollars
69:48 per year with it. This is a great quote.
69:51 Lynxis global product manager Vince Lass uh Vince Leuka, excuse me, told ours,
69:56 "To be honest, it somewhat baffles my
69:59 mind, but we'll keep building it because people keep buying
70:04 it." Wonderful.
70:08 All right, so I think that pretty much wraps it up. Thank you very much for
70:14 tuning in to the WAN Show this week. I'm sorry it was late. I think based on how
70:18 smoothly the stream has gone since we started it and got the audio fixed that
70:23 I'm basically not going to touch anything and hopefully we will be good
70:26 to go next week. That strategy has definitely worked for us in the past and
70:31 it has also not worked for us at times in the past ever. Ever. So that was my
70:34 point. Thank you for watching and we will see you again next week. Same bat
70:38 time, same bat channel. Bye.
70:42 There's no intro. Carrying a couch.
70:47 Lionus drops the couch and laughs. I keep
70:52 going. I laugh. There's not that big of a delay between
70:56 you laughing and dropping the couch. Yeah, I think it's funny immediately. I
71:01 think we're sitting on a couch together. We move a little bit on the couch cuz oh
71:06 my god, we can't make graphics apparently.
