0:00 to say we've generated some complaints
0:04 with our recent change to the style of our video titles and thumbnails would be
0:09 a gross understatement and I want to get
0:13 right into a discussion about that after
0:17 this
0:25 ad browse privately and securely with
0:28 TunnelBear the simple VPN app try tunnel
0:32 bear for free at the link in the video
0:35 description honestly it's kind of hard to know where to start with something
0:38 like this trolling you guys by playing up the greedy corporate shill perception
0:44 that some of you have of me probably wasn't the right approach but joking
0:49 about things is usually how I break the ice when I'm about to have an awkward
0:54 conversation and this is going to be a
0:57 little awkward I screw up the video title of
1:01 our recent ryzen 3 and ryzen 5
1:05 performance preview which was initially
1:08 called AMD ryzen 5 and 3 tested and then
1:12 AMD ryzen 5 and 3 previewed we shouldn't have said we
1:17 tested them because we were actually using a different CPU to simulate their
1:22 performance and even preview upon
1:26 further reflection wasn't quite right since well what we were previewing was
1:31 the performance that we expected from the chips rather than the chips
1:35 themselves so I could spin that as an
1:39 experiment to see where the threshold was for audience tolerance for our new
1:44 thumbnails and titles there would be some truth to that we are constantly
1:50 making small tweaks but this this is
1:54 honest answers and these videos wouldn't have much value if I didn't uh shoot
1:58 straight so here it is in this case I
2:03 didn't think it was a big deal to draw viewers in with an admittedly misleading
2:08 title because I was so confident in our
2:11 testing methodology and I was so
2:15 confident that the viewers who I would draw in with such a title would turn out
2:21 to be amped to see the benchmarks that we worked so hard on to say that
2:27 backfired would be putting it pretty mildly and the damage is actually deeper
2:32 than it appears on the outside one positive takeaway here is that I did get
2:37 absolute confirmation of my theory that there's been a major shift in the way
2:42 that YouTube handles dislikes or more
2:45 accurately the way that YouTube handles the like to dislike ratio so my previous
2:52 understanding was that both of them were weighted about equally and there are
2:56 examples of viral hugely successful videos in the past that seem to have
3:03 backed up this belief but we got to watch in this case
3:08 in real time as YouTube buried this
3:12 video about 10 minutes after it went live and the effect of YouTube doing
3:17 something like that lasts for days on a
3:21 channel so then I guess at this point some of you are expecting that what
3:26 comes next is an on my knees apology and a a solemn promise to never again make a
3:33 silly face or press the Forbidden key
3:37 again and to go back to the good old days of working out of the garage hey
3:42 guys can you guys tell me how the audio is and thumbnails with white text on a
3:46 screen capture of b-roll from the video but while there are aspects of that
3:51 approach that I prefer both as a consumer and a creator of content it's
3:57 not going to happen and there are a lot of reasons why
4:00 some of it is that Nostalgia glasses
4:03 don't actually work very well Blades of Steel is fun but is it really a good
4:09 game by today's standards and our old unboxing videos are similarly fun but
4:15 they contain very little actual
4:18 information change has been a very good
4:21 thing for the density of information that we're able to present I mean is it
4:27 possible if you don't like it anymore more that the tech industry changed or
4:32 maybe you as an individual have changed
4:36 in the last8 Years just as much as we have but a much bigger factor is this
4:42 using so-called cancerous thumbnails
4:46 allows our videos to stand out better in
4:49 a search result or suggested video pain
4:53 gaining us new viewers which is very
4:56 beneficial for obvious reasons the old
5:00 hard truth is that if everyone is doing
5:03 this there's probably a reason it
5:07 works and while I've seen every argument
5:10 Under the Sun I read almost all the comments on our videos for why it's bad
5:16 the cold hard truth is that none of them really hold any water number one you're
5:22 big enough you don't need more views what think about what it would
5:28 mean if we stopped growing YouTube as a
5:32 platform is growing PC gaming in particular is growing I mean us being
5:38 happy with stagnant viewership in a growing world would be kind of like your
5:44 grandpa being happy with the same $3 an hour he made back in 1950 unacceptable
5:50 number two people hate it you'll drive away your core audience well there is no
5:56 doubt that some people hate it but most of the empirical evidence we've seen
6:00 suggests that this is a very vocal
6:03 minority to be clear unsubscribes do
6:06 happen they're common we've lost more
6:10 subscribers on LT than most YouTube
6:14 channels will ever have but this is a
6:18 natural thing people's interests change maybe maybe they even
6:21 die but the massive waves of unsubscribes as a reaction to a
6:26 particular piece of content are much
6:30 rarer than the comment section would have you believe three you're pandering
6:36 to kids by making these faces okay there are two fundamental
6:40 problems with this one number one who cares adult enthusiasts you know
6:46 grown-ups should be able to see a silly face without it ruining their day and
6:51 should be pleased as punch that someone is out there creating content that gets
6:55 younger people excited and passionate about technology and two it's nonsense
7:02 our demographics skew older today than
7:05 they ever have so consider that one
7:09 debunked and honestly I could go on and on but the bottom line is this video
7:15 production is really expensive when you
7:18 believe that your staff should be comfortable happy and well-compensated
7:22 then you put that money where your mouth is so with the significant investment
7:29 all already made into making every piece of content we do another 20 minutes on a
7:35 thumbnail that can boost viewership by no kidding up to
7:39 20% is a no-brainer and in response to what I'm
7:45 sure is coming next you yes you the one writing an essay about how being a
7:50 YouTuber isn't a real job we shouldn't have all this overhead we should just do
7:54 it out of passion like we used to one a
7:58 job is anything you can get paid to do and we're doing okay some of us even
8:03 wear decent clothes two to jog your
8:07 memory I used to work at a computer store in fact every single person in
8:13 this video has been paid to make Linus
8:17 Tech tips videos since the moment they started making Linus Tech tips videos so
8:23 that hasn't changed leading us to number three of course we're passionate our are
8:29 you kidding there are a lot of things that I
8:34 would rather not stress about like commercial property leases Insurance
8:40 equipment breakage taxes scheduling
8:44 dealing with staff vacation times but I
8:48 do all of this crap that I don't enjoy
8:52 because I am passionate about making the best videos we can and about running a
8:58 real business that has allowed us to make seven Gamers or ultimate desk PC
9:04 scrapyard Wars projects that wouldn't
9:08 have been possible if I was still hand camming unboxings in a parking lot with
9:13 Luke you can criticize me for plenty of
9:17 stuff but slam me for lacking passion I
9:21 mean you're probably the same people asking why I built my own server room
9:26 instead of hiring someone to do it properly because I love playing with
9:30 this stuff why do you think i' do it if I wasn't personally passionate about
9:35 making Tech videos there would be no reason for me to make an embarrassing
9:40 face in a thumbnail to try and grow this company you think I want to explain to
9:45 my kids why I'm always looking like
9:48 this honestly do I really even seem like
9:51 the kind of person who needs a lot of material things to be happy do you think
9:56 this is about the money I live in the same house house I drive the same car
10:02 and I wear the same abominable cheap
10:05 Footwear that I always did the only
10:08 fancy stuff in my life is my tech
10:12 gadgets just like before I ever set foot
10:15 in front of a camera do you know what a lack of passion would actually look
10:21 like plotting away day after day at the
10:25 same kinds of videos in the same format
10:28 with the same presentation do you have any idea how easily I can rattle off a
10:35 power supply unboxing do you have any idea how much faster it is to generate
10:40 our old thumbnails which coming back then to the
10:44 beginning of our little chat doesn't mean that we haven't ever taken it too
10:49 far so here is my proposal to help us
10:53 communicate with each other better unfortunately I need to keep
10:59 going like this and titling our videos
11:03 in a way that allows us to adapt to how viewers are discovering new content but
11:10 I won't mislead you if I say you won't
11:13 believe this bizarre keyboard you won't believe it and what I'm asking for in
11:19 return is this one try to understand our
11:23 position we can't ignore the changes in
11:26 the way that viewers are browsing content on YouTube
11:30 if the title is representative of the content world's ugliest keyboard it
11:36 isn't even if it shares some stylistic
11:40 aspects with clickbait it isn't by the very definition
11:45 clickbait it's awful and I'd appreciate
11:48 if you could look past a little bit of edginess and avoid painting us with the
11:54 same brush as folks putting boobs in
11:57 their thumbnails of videos about cars
12:00 and not cars with boobs just regular cars and number two if you want to
12:06 communicate with us do it in a way that's meaningful honestly I couldn't
12:11 tell if this thumbnail thing was a serious problem or just more background
12:17 noise from haters like whatever the hell
12:21 prompted 500 people to dislike this this
12:24 really cool piece of content where we took the time to Benchmark 10 years of
12:28 video cards there was a lot of time or the like like the truckload of poorly
12:33 researched comments informing me that my server room is
12:37 flammable try this if there's something
12:41 that you liked about the video help us
12:44 then help us drown out the peanut gallery with a like and an on topic
12:49 comment we really do read those and these things boost search rankings and
12:54 suggested video placements behavioral conditioning 101 guys
13:00 positive feedback is more powerful than negative and negative loses its impact
