0:00 when the oculus rift and the htc vive hit the market a couple of years ago the
0:04 gaming world was stoked at the possibility of everyone being able to
0:08 strap on a headset and be instantly immersed in a realistic virtual world
0:13 that responded to the players every move seamlessly
0:16 so hyped was the potential of vr that facebook famously spent 2
0:22 billion to acquire oculus vr in 2014 but
0:26 here we are a few years later and the vr scene is as stagnant as swamp water with
0:30 headset manufacturers slashing their prices in a vain attempt to boost their
0:34 sales but why i mean the graphics have certainly come a long way since the
0:39 virtual boy flopped well although many folks who have tried one of these
0:43 newfangled vr headsets have come away impressed with the experience vr has
0:47 fallen short in areas other than what you see and hear once you put on the
0:52 headset for one the high frame rates needed for a smooth vr experience that
0:57 won't break your immersion or make you sick demands fairly high-end computer
1:02 hardware which when combined with an expensive vr headset is out of reach for
1:06 many consumers plus even if you have the
1:09 money for a vr setup they are not immune to a criticism that is common in many
1:14 wearables people just don't particularly want to
1:18 wear a bunch of gadgets you can learn more about that up here but many
1:22 consumers were reportedly turned off by the weight and bulk of vr headsets as
1:28 well as the tentacle-like cables connecting them to their pc or
1:31 playstation as it were and on the subject of bulk the sheer amount of
1:36 space needed to get the full rim scale
1:39 vr experience is a straight up non-starter for folks who live in
1:43 smaller spaces especially if they already have a large gaming tower and
1:47 battle station that's taking up a bunch of room then there's the lack of solid
1:51 vr focused games out there developer reception to vr platforms has been a
1:56 little lackluster due to tepid sales of the headsets themselves creating a
2:00 chicken and egg problem where it's hard for the entire ecosystem to gain
2:04 momentum you can only sell so many units based on robo recall and you can only
2:09 play so much robo recall before you're like is there something else and this is a
2:13 problem that is exacerbated by the fact that vr development is more difficult
2:18 and expensive than regular game development due to the technological
2:22 challenges involved for one thing the game engines that are needed to develop
2:27 and refine these vr titles are still themselves being developed since the
2:31 tech is relatively new and there aren't
2:34 that many developers with you know deep resumes about all their experience
2:39 working on vr over the last 10 or 20 years because like
2:43 it's new so
2:46 are we saying then that we should just give up any hope that vr will ever be relevant
2:52 well no at least not in the long term the technology does have potential
2:57 especially when you consider that mainstream vr headsets have only been
3:00 around a few years and the wireless adapters for them are starting to appear
3:04 on the market additionally vr could simply prove to be more popular for
3:09 applications other than gaming than we expected such as education healthcare
3:14 engineering or well seedier uses
3:18 but it's also pretty clear that with the obstacles we have it may be quite a few
3:23 years before vr becomes a fixture in our homes especially as augmented reality
3:28 experiences and this includes everything from snapchat filters to pokemon go have
3:33 commanded far more attention in the immersive entertainment space with
3:37 developers seeing it as a much more lucrative cash cow than vr gaming but
3:43 don't worry if spending half your paycheck on a vr setup is unrealistic
3:47 for you there's good news i hear that sitting in a real cubicle for eight
3:51 hours a day is actually a pretty close approximation of job simulator in vr
