0:01 all right well that took a lot longer to get going than I was hoping we're having

0:08 the funny thing about it is that we've actually got two isps here one of which

0:14 is our fiber connection and the other of which is our um our cable connection and

0:21 the cable connection we were having an issue with those guys where they they

0:24 actually turned us off for about a month because we were going over our bandwidth

0:29 allotment and they were supposed to turn us off for a weekend yeah it was

0:32 supposed to be for a weekend and then they just didn't so whatever that's cool

0:38 I guess and then the fiber connection uh is just not sending any UDP packets

0:44 right now so it's TCP only which means

0:47 like very little Skype yeah not not a

0:52 whole lot we can do on that one so we're we're like trying to find a solution

0:56 here oh right right right so when our cable provider turned the internet back

0:59 back on the issue that we had with them is that they haven't put us in bridge

1:04 mode so it's our our modems acting as a

1:08 router but then it's not because our switch here isn't working and the

1:13 wireless on it isn't on and I have no idea what the username and password is

1:18 to log into it and then like I was like okay well maybe they maybe it's in

1:23 bridge mode now so I plugged in a router and then whatever so long story short

15:16 things that we've seen out of Microsoft in the last little while here can I just

15:20 uh I just oh hello hello do this hold on

15:31 Microsoft has revealed a quote unquote hidden feature in the Windows 8.1 update

15:36 one which will allow the system to be installed on a system which will allow

15:41 the OS to be installed on a system with a 16 gig SSD and still have free space

15:46 for your programs reports bit tech.net

15:49 so allegedly the way that they're achieving this is by instead of having

15:55 some parts of the OS compressed and some un compressed it's an uncompressed and

16:00 compressed yeah sorry sorry instead of having the whole OS uncompressed they're

16:03 leaving the the super critical parts uncompressed and then they're actually

16:08 having a bunch of it still be compressed with a pointer file that shows it where

16:12 to go now there are some limitations so you are not allowed to install it on a

16:18 spinning drive for example you must be running a UEFI based PC running in UEFI

16:23 mode you let's hold on a second drive only additional oh additional Drive that

16:28 are installed can be mechanical so it's just the boot drive and it applies to

16:33 client editions of Windows 8.1 there are also some backup antivirus and

16:37 encryption tools that aren't compatible with wiim boot images um they claim that

16:44 there won't be a performance

16:48 Delta how uh there's probably there's probably going to be a little bit of a

16:51 performance hit I mean there' have to be anytime compressions involved there's

16:55 going to be a little bit of a hit but it'll probably be negligible really so if it's negligible

17:00 like this is a legitimate question if it's negligible why do we bother on

17:04 compressing anything in the first place because sometimes negligible

17:09 pisses people off like Benchmark junkies and people that are like really into

17:12 benchmarking stuff like that you know if if you're if you want to squeeze every

17:16 ounce of power out of your computer you don't want you don't want anything like bringing it down that's why people are

17:20 like so hardcore about overclocking their gpus and stuff like that I mean

17:23 for the average user yeah I don't see the problem with it I think everybody should compress it and to be honest ntf

17:28 F has supported that forever you can actually go into your NTS volume and enable compression across the whole

17:32 volume and reclaim a ton of disc space but how often do you hear of people

17:35 using that feature you just really don't have you spent any time with that

17:40 feature to see what kind of a performance impact we're looking at uh

17:44 on the NTFS compression yes on the wiim

17:47 boot stuff no I haven't done any any testing on it okay so NTFS compression

17:52 like like what are we dealing with because I mean there's two ways of looking at this so sand Force SSD is

17:57 aside the ones that are already compressing the data you're writing to

18:00 them and then uncompressing them on the fly but if you take a drive that

18:04 performs really really well without Hardware compression so something like

18:08 um an Intel 730 series or something like an 840 Pro could we be looking at a

18:13 whole new world of performance if you have the CPU resources such that the

18:18 compression and uncompression isn't going to slow anything down and you are

18:22 effectively making better use of the speed of your drive oh absolutely no no

18:27 you're absolutely right I mean if the physical data is compressed and you don't have to move as much physical data

18:32 between the actual bus from the drive to the CPU for instance then the CPU is

18:36 your limiting factor because it's basically decompressing the data there and since compression most of the old

18:41 Legacy compression algorithms are really really fast now like they used to kill

18:44 the old CPUs but like the light compression the NTFS uses and stuff like

18:48 that i' I'd be really surprised if you saw a huge IO performance hit the

18:51 biggest problem with compression that I see is that depending on the type of data that you're compressing the

18:55 performance can vary so so you know if if you're do if you're heavily

18:59 compressing things like text and stuff like that the decompression and compression algorithm used to compress

19:04 that data it can the performance can change it's on it's on a little bit of a

19:07 curve so compressing 100 megabytes of one type of data versus compressing and

19:11 decompressing 100 megabytes of a different type of data depending on the data and how compressible it is that's

19:15 going to affect performance so you don't really get a linear performance it's

19:18 more of all over the place right this ties into what you were talking about

19:22 where you referenced that it's only the really important stuff that's compressed

19:25 it's the whole thing it's just Windows updates and stuff after that isn't put

19:29 in the wiim boot section right right and even though it's compressed it's it's

19:33 it's like it's still all in the whim file it's just part the files partially

19:37 compressed which I guess is kind of a New Concept because I've never heard of anything else being partially compressed

19:41 usually a file is compressed or it's not right so it's it's it's a little bit

19:45 weird to see the partial compression but the idea of being able to reclaim so

19:49 much of that space on a device where it comes at a premium you know where you

19:52 have you know solid state media on a tablet or a phone I mean that's a big deal right but then I mean

19:59 okay so something like a tablet then I wonder how much you're going to give up

20:03 in terms of processing in terms of uh in

20:06 terms of processing resources to battery

20:09 then so if you're that was very poorly phrased but the point is if you are if

20:14 you're using your CPU more as opposed to your storage more right are you going to

20:18 be giving up some battery life anytime you're doing something IO intensive then

20:22 you know that that's an interesting question because you're actually saving some battery life by not having to

20:27 access the med is frequently and you're kind of trading it off for the CPU but

20:32 the yeah CPU generally I think you would

20:35 take a little bit of a battery hit on it but it also depends there's other factors in there like caching right I'm

20:39 sure that if they're using compression on those fil they're also aggressively

20:42 caching things in and out of memory and if they're doing aggressive caching and

20:45 things like that especially on system level files they're not going to be loading them very often they're going to

20:49 be loading them once caching them and then pulling from memory so the decompression is going to be happening

20:53 every single time you access every one of these files I'm sure they're being very smart about which files

20:58 need to be loaded once and access thousands of times versus files that do

21:02 literally have to be loaded each and every time due to their D Dynamic nature

21:05 or something like that right but yeah as far as battery life I again I'm G to say

21:10 probably going to be negligible because compression algorithms aren't going to be that se they're not it's not going to

21:15 be super high compression and it's not going to be high compression and encryption which usually it's the

21:19 encryption side of compression that really really kills it so I I don't

21:23 think you're really going to see a huge impact but as far as no impact no it's

21:26 anytime anytime you're doing compression you're going to have some kind of an impact on the CPU's performance the

21:31 partial compression thing is weird throughout reading the entire article I I didn't actually see anything about

21:35 that I just saw that there was the recovery partition that stays compressed and then all updates and future stuff

21:40 after that goes in the completely uncompressed Windows partition so that's

21:43 I'm going to have to read more about that that's interesting yeah no I I like

21:47 and I like the idea of how they're masking it at the file system level too I mean to to the user the file system is

21:52 going to look exactly the same you're not you're not going to notice any difference the filter driver will take

21:56 care of it all magically behind the scenes um but as far as needing to update

22:01 things into the whim that's a little bit interesting because of course you're not just reading things out of the whim I'd

22:06 imagine the whim needs to be updated at some point also no they're saying that I

22:10 I read on the on Microsoft's actual documentation that updates go into the

22:14 Windows predition not into whim oh okay so so the whim stays the base image no

22:18 matter what yeah that's why I'm saying I didn't I didn't read anything about partial compression because they have

22:22 the compressed what used to be recovery

22:25 uh image which is now your whim image and then that never changes and any

22:29 updates or service packs or whatever the heck you get after that go in your

22:32 Windows partition uncompressed and the wiim partition never changes never gets

22:36 touched so you can still use it as recovery later on down the line no that that makes that makes a hell of a lot of

22:39 sense actually because that also prevents you from ever causing any fragmentation on the file so they can

22:44 literally optimize how those files are laid out in that whim to make them as

22:47 quickly as accessible as possible so which is kind of awesome and like you

22:50 can if you're trying to do it on like an Enterprise level or whatever you can

22:54 inject things into it on your own so you can inject updates and stuff into win

22:58 before you deploy it yeah but once it's deployed all updates and everything from

23:02 that point onward will then go into your uncompressed Windows predition no that's

23:07 actually that's really cool I'm sure this is also going to have like a high impact on VM deployments and stuff like

23:12 that I I like the idea of just having a whim and just basically just deploying

23:16 the whim as a VM and not having to deal with all the you know all all of the

23:19 crate creating partitions decompressing the whim onto the drive all that stuff

23:22 you don't have to do any of it it's your install times are nothing exactly right

23:25 right now it doesn't work for applications are VM it's just kind of

23:29 cons1 client only but but it'll it'll this is the beginning right so yeah it

23:34 always is right I mean it'll it'll happen it makes it makes sense it fits

23:37 the bill it almost feels like this is actually made like for

23:43 VMS yeah it's it's I mean it's really cool the the the coolest thing about it

23:48 isn't necessarily that they're just holding everything in the wiim but I just like the idea that the filter

23:51 driers is taking all of the guesswork out of it so the average user they're not going to know what's going on they

23:55 just reclaimed a whole bunch of space right right and I think honestly that's

23:59 the most important thing especially when you're dealing with the client side with the Enterprise side not so much but when

24:02 you're dealing with the client side and people that are buying tablets they just want their space they you know even if

24:07 they can reclaim four gigabytes to put another movie on it I mean that might be the difference between not buying and

24:11 buying that device so I I think that's really cool I mean I gota I can't help

24:16 but feel a little bit like this is something Microsoft shouldn't have even really had to do I mean you look at how

24:22 much um smartphone capacity has evolved

24:25 in the last four years I when the iPhone 4 came out it was available in 16 32 and

24:31 64 gig capacities yes what's what's the 5S available

24:38 in I think they have 128 gig don't they

24:41 they may have a 128 gig but really

24:44 you're going to try and convince me that flash densities haven't at least more

24:47 than doubled and with the way that pricing is structured it's really not

24:50 that much cheaper and they make you pay an awful lot more for a little bit more storage and I think that's why a lot of

24:55 people end up with 16 gig smartphones or

24:58 16 gigs still when really do they have to is it really that much of the bill of

25:03 materials or could you just or or I mean looking at what's happened to ssds over

25:07 the last four years in terms of pricing couldn't you just be delivering us 64

25:12 gigs minimum as a smartphone capacity with capacities up to you know 128 or

25:16 even 256 apparently is no I I I agree

25:20 that spa space is getting cheaper it's it's absolutely getting cheaper it's

25:23 getting smaller it's getting faster so does reclaiming you know a couple of

25:26 gigabytes really make a difference in the grand scheme of things not not at

25:29 the higher end of the spectrum not if you're talking like you know 64 128 256

25:33 gig devices all the way up to gez they got like terabyte ssds now right that

25:36 are affordable um but the thing is you have to think a little bit more globally

25:40 too when you're competing in a market where you want to create mobile devices that are 100 $200 you know and you

25:44 really want to hit that low low price point yep stuff like the Moto G exactly

25:49 you can buy 16 Gigabyte you know ssds for pennies you know on the dollar

25:54 they're almost irrelevant now because people just don't use them but if you can put those into device

25:58 and drive the price down to a point where you know somebody that couldn't otherwise afford a tablet or a mobile

26:02 device now can that's their price of Entry I mean I think I think that's

26:06 still a very very Noble thing yeah um to to go after but yeah at the high end I

26:10 mean is this is this going to be something that we're going to be using if we have like we know one terab hard

26:14 drives on our desktop computers no not really I mean I wouldn't I wouldn't take

26:17 the performance hit for it I would rather pay for it in space just because it's cheaper in this application but

26:22 when you're talking a smartphone or a small tablet or something like that then

26:25 yeah I think it's beneficial in the long run because one thing you're not going to be using those devices for super high

26:29 performance applications so the slight performance hit you take in you know in

26:33 decompressing the data I don't think it's going to be a really big deal to you because you're going to be using

26:36 stuff like office checking your email Facebook and watching movies things like

26:39 that you're not going to be like you know editing and rendering and doing 3D

26:43 stuff and you know hosting your web you know your web server on your tablet at

27:46 Drive is ridiculous you click save and instead of

27:50 just being a local browsing dialogue it's like where would you like to save

29:07 generation it's because I like certain things that they all have to offer but the biggest ailles heal with Android

29:11 always with me is is not all the apps work on all the devices you get this

29:16 really weird experience where you go into the marketplace and it's like at the beginning of the description of

29:19 everything is it's like oh known problems on these 15 devices and you're like oh my God it's like I like a

29:24 platform where it's like I'm pretty much guaranteed to be able to download and use everything I don't to go oh damn it

29:29 I bought that Samsung you know whatever S5 or whatever and now I can't run these

29:33 five apps because my screen resolution is too high in the developer didn't fix it you know that's the part that annoys

29:38 me is it's almost like the thing that makes Android really good also makes it

29:41 really bad yeah yeah like I I've had so much I love Light Flow I love the idea

29:46 of it when I did my Nexus 5 review it was amazing just like I I can't get it

29:51 working flawlessly on anything else and it drives me crazy because it's like a

29:55 really fantastic Light Flow Light Flow

29:59 yeah no there's some really cool there's some really cool apps on Android that I

30:02 found but I just I remember back and it's gotten a lot better now but I

30:05 remember back when I bought uh gosh which was it like Motorola made a made a

30:09 little Android tablet was it Motorola God I can't even remember it was so long

30:12 ago I bought it Best Buy it was like brand new tablet high resolution I

30:15 brought it home and seriously I downloaded like 30 apps and of the 30

30:18 like two of them worked right on it yeah because all of them were like designed for phones all of them were designed for

30:22 different resolutions some of them just didn't work well with the new capacitive

30:25 touch that they were using crashed left and right and I couldn't triage or debug

30:30 any of it mainly it's better now yeah it's a it's a lot better now I

30:33 definitely a lot better now like I use a

30:36 my G2 when I did um and I would blindly

30:40 download applications without checking if it worked or not never had a single

30:43 problem um never had a problem with my Nexus S never had a problem with my S3

30:48 and I'm not having a problem with the Tegra Note right now Luke never never

30:53 like really never I've never had a problem with application compatibility

30:57 okay but then hold on a second cuz he came from a Nexus device to an S3 I I

31:03 named my devices yeah I did use fairly mainstream devices that's very true so

31:07 the I didn't use like the uh Motorola tablet or anything like that I was using

31:11 an Nexus device and I was using a Samsung device then I was using a flagship LG device so it's it's like

31:16 yeah so you weren't using like the $16 like what is it like

31:22 knw so yeah cuz I've had all kinds of

31:25 problems with like offbrand Android where like nothing works on them we we

31:29 were just talking about you know lowend storage on the mobile devices and it

31:32 just reminded me that I've seen some of these uh some of these Chinese

31:36 electronic sites online that are selling Android devices like actual functioning

31:40 phones running Android on them for like 2530 yeah and they've got like eight

31:45 gigs of storage you know like four or eight gigs of storage in them and so it

31:49 it still goes back to I guess there is a market for that obviously somewhere in

31:52 the world there's a market for these incredibly incredibly cheap

31:56 devices yeah that's actually uh it's not on our list of topics for today but um

32:01 when when the whole Project Ara thing was coming around and you know the

32:06 enthusiasts were getting really excited about it and I guess what well really it

32:10 was more when it was called phone blocks when it was still that campaign um one

32:14 of the conversations that we had on the show was like look enthusiasts calm calm

32:19 your boobies because this isn't for you and now that some pricing rumors are

32:23 starting to surface and Project Ara is

32:26 rumored to be what like in the 2535 range for an entry LEL device I

32:32 think that that's a very good point is that there is definitely a market for

32:36 this I thought it was 50 bucks 50 bucks okay I could be wrong but it's like it's

32:39 still really cheap yeah like it's going to be a very very entry-level device and

32:43 there's definitely still a market for this and I think that in the next sort

32:47 of few years this whole like high-end

32:51 phone thing is going to mostly go away

32:54 just like you can't buy a highend cordless home phone anymore like have

32:59 you noticed that yeah no I have I have I I shop at Costco like religiously and

33:03 for years I'd go to Costco and there'd be at least five or six different really

33:07 really high-end like unit in phones like you know I've got my my VTEC over here

33:11 you know this was considered high-end back in the day right yeah and uh so you

33:15 know now I go to Costco it's like I can't remember the last time I walked into any Costco and actually seen a home

33:19 phone for sale like they don't even have them anymore and like for for a while

33:24 there there was a period of like at least a few years where they still had

33:28 them everywhere but the way that they were justifying the high price was

33:32 they're just giving you more and more handsets to the point where you'd have

33:35 one that would come with you know four or five handsets in it and that was they

33:40 put ridiculous features on them too like I mean features like well they sound

33:44 cool but they don't really work in practice like for instance I have a

33:47 feature on my phone over here and it's one of the reasons why I bought it and guess what I never used the feature hey

33:51 good marketing huh um it's got It's got this Bluetooth thing where you can

33:54 basically hook your Bluetooth conect connect to your cell phone any cell

33:58 phone's Bluetooth you can connect it to the base station of this and if your

34:01 home phone rings your cell phone like

34:04 rings and you answer it through the Bluetooth and you can talk on your home phone through your cell phone right so

34:08 it basically turns your cell phone into a handset the problem is it only works

34:12 when you're like 15 feet away from the base station it cuts out constantly so

34:15 it's like it's like they didn't even test it it was one of those illusionary benefits where it's like I bet you some

34:18 nerd's going to buy this if we put it on the box and they were right I did but

34:23 the cool thing about Costco is in 20 years I can take this handset back and

34:26 be like yeah uh it doesn't work give me all my money

34:30 back that's Costco for you oh my god Costco's kind of

34:35 amazing the stuff I've taken back over periods of time has completely blown my

34:39 mind I mean honest my favorite return story at Costco uh well actually I've

34:43 got it two one was my mom returning a toaster oven that was literally over 10

34:48 years old and stopped working they gave her they gave her a brand new

34:52 top-of-the-line one and then my personal favorite was one where I actually didn't

35:40 previous summer when I was painting houses and um what happened and it was

36:49 like my two best stories ever was a baby monitor I took a baby it legitimately

36:53 broke the baby monitor we had it for about a year and the camera one of the

36:56 cameras broke so we took the whole thing back and they're like they they're like

37:00 oh do you have the re they asked me for the receipt cuz they couldn't figure out which purchase it was in the system

37:04 because it was a really obscure item and so they opened up the back they got the serial number anyways they found it in

37:08 the computer system they're like okay we found it they're like would you like cash or or store credit and I'm like

37:13 cash and then they look in the bag and they're like oh do you have the power adapter for the other camera and I was

37:17 like oh crap I left the power adapter at home I was like oh here I'll run home and get it they're like yeah don't worry

37:20 about it and they so they gave me my money back so I still have the AC

37:24 adapter for this thing sitting in the house somewhere and the second one was a friend of mine bought a treadmill had it

37:28 for 3 years a tread a treadmill exercise

37:31 equipment right who the hell returns that successfully and so the treadmill

37:35 it was uh started squeaking or something the it wasn't even broken the belt was just squeaking or something so he loaded

37:39 in his truck and took it back there and sure enough they just they just asked him uh you know cash credit here you go

37:44 and the guy went out in the parking lot and put it on a flat bin took it inside and we're like dude you just returned a

37:48 three-year-old used treadmill and it was like and he got and he got like $1,200

37:51 back for it it's like you bought the treadmill today on Craigslist it'd be like 50 bucks it just it blows my mind I

37:57 don't know how that business model works and how they can actually like sustain that but hey I can tell you how it works

39:06 returned they put it on pallets they

39:10 pack it up and they say we're not paying for these ones oh my God so basically

39:14 what you're saying is when I go to Costco and they're like sir would you like cash or credit what they're really

39:19 doing on the other end of Samsung as they're like yeah you're getting 6,000 TVs back yeah yes pretty much oh

39:29 is there's no way they're not going to want to sell their stuff to Costco yeah

39:46 other thing I don't really get with Costco too is they got the membership deal right so they're making some money

39:49 off that you buy a membership what is it like $30 $40 a year or whatever but then they have that executive membership that

39:54 they cram down your throat and they try to get you to get it's like 20 it's only

39:57 like was it like $50 more like $100 a year something like that but then they

40:01 give you back like 5% of your purchases so every year I get a check from them

40:04 for like thousands of dollars and I'm like how is this making you guys any

40:08 money well it's it's all a volume game with them I mean okay here's something

40:12 crazy I don't know if you know this my wife works at Costco um she's a pharmacy

40:16 manager there so basically Costco aside

40:20 from all of these sort of the the the way that they treat customers the way

40:25 they treat employees is really good and the way that they treat their internal

40:29 policies is actually really amazing

40:32 sometimes so my brother-in-law works there too and he loves it he's he's like a career guy he's been there for like 10

40:36 years there you go they actually have a policy that they will not Mark something

40:42 up more than x% within a given category

40:46 oh wow so like the way that it worked when I was in product management because

40:50 NC is a fairly sensible company is that

40:54 if we got a crazy you know end run deal

40:57 on coolit eco water cooling units or something like that this was actually my

41:01 buy I bought like 5,000 of them or 6,000 of them in one shot and we got them for

41:08 like $28 or something insane like that

41:11 so Costco would take that deal and they

41:14 would Blitz them at$ 32.99 because that's their policy if they get a crazy

41:19 deal they can't just milk it you it put

41:23 default margin on it and call it good yeah okay whereas I was able to take

41:28 that deal and turn it into thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars of

41:32 profit and then Blitz it once in a while

41:35 and and kind of kind of milk it that way but Costco's policy is that you can't do

41:39 that that's why they don't sell Apple because they refuse to adhere to Apple's

41:45 map gotcha because if they were selling Apple it be like here get an iPhone 68

41:49 bucks yeah and nobody would ever go to the Apple Store ever again and Costco

41:54 will not sell well or they won't buy it for less than what other people are

41:58 paying cuz they're Costco and then they won't sell it for more than their policy

46:32 proprietary nonsense that they do is

46:35 totally acceptable in that market so I so I didn't really have any better

46:39 choice but basically will I buy another

46:43 piece of Sony gear after that experience is the camera excellent yes has it

46:47 served us very well yes did they issue a firmware update that they charged me

46:52 $600 for yes ouch

46:56 so they sold this camera with 4K

46:59 capability as a big selling point it has a 4K sensor in it and then no ETA on the

47:06 actual firmware that would enable this nothing no ETA or Price estimate on the

47:12 recorder that was going to enable it by the way Sony's proprietary recorder that

47:16 uses their proprietary recording module

47:20 that uses their proprietary media is like $88,000 so it's about the same

47:25 price as the camera I could literally buy a red rig for the cost of that and

47:29 shoot with an fs700 like Sony are you high so so there so their proprietary

47:34 solution costs double of what the one aftermarket solution that they've

47:38 licensed the ability to record off this camera in raw mode costs so they they

47:44 went and made their own solution make no sense because it's priced out to

47:47 complete freaking lunch they want all these proprietary things they want you

47:51 to pay for a firmware upgrade and I'm sitting here going Sony you haven't

47:54 learned a damn thing have you yeah the

47:59 yeah the whole paying for firmware C I mean that I'm going to call BS right out

48:02 of the gate on that because the whole fact is the firmware drives the hardware

48:05 right I mean to support the software don't be giving me extra features or

48:09 fixing stuff that's supposed to already be fixed then charging me for it that

48:13 that drives me absolutely nuts uh Sony's not the only one to do that either uh

48:17 but I do like how Canon Canon's really forthcoming with their firmwares and I

48:20 also like the fact that there's a lot of Open Source development for Canon too that's why I like to use the Canon

48:24 platform what buttheads they're being to the open source crew right I haven't

48:29 heard no are they are they being pretty pretty hard-headed about it yeah no

48:33 there's uh I forget what camera it is I think the the issue is that it's capable

48:37 of recording 4K but Canon has basically

48:40 said anyone who makes a firmware for this that records in

48:44 4k oh that's not that that's probably the Magic Lantern project for the 5D

48:48 Mark iiii because I heard I think the Mark II sensor supports 4K but it only

48:53 can record it for like even even even with the hacked firw can only record for

48:56 like a maximum of like 10 seconds before the buffer memory runs out but I guess

53:05 mobile in 2013 Intel's mobile chip division lost a staggering

53:10 3.15 billion after posting an operating

53:13 loss of 1.78 billion in 2012 and in the

53:17 first quarter of 2014 alone the mobile and Communications Group saw a 9.29

53:22 million operating loss on a meager 56

53:26 million in Revenue according to new Financial results issued today by the

53:30 company so what I have to say to this is

53:35 investors need to like cool it and

53:38 understand that this is a long-term play for Intel Intel has been making so much

53:43 ground up over the last two years or so

53:47 compared to ARM Solutions in terms of their power efficiency and performance

53:51 within those power envelopes that we need in order for them to really be

53:55 competitor in tablet and in smartphone

53:58 they're still ahead of everyone else on manufacturing process nodes and all that

54:03 stuff they're still the technology leader give them a little bit longer and

54:07 they're going to they're going to dominate but I'm open to other opinions

54:11 on this no I I tend I tend to actually agree with you on this I think I and and

54:16 I'll probably take some backlash from this but you know I say anything but I I think arms getting played out I just the

54:21 the the the performance versus power consumption thing just isn't doesn't do

54:24 it for me i' I've still yet to see a single ARM Solution that's really like pushing the

54:28 power that I've seen Intel capable on a similar size platform now granted

54:32 consuming a hell of a lot more power and therefore killing your battery life but

54:36 it's one of those things where it's like yeah I'd rather I'd rather have a lot of power for three hours than no power at

54:40 all for 10 I mean that's just me generally I'm more of a power user but

54:45 Intel and the other thing too is yeah they might be losing money you know hand

54:48 over fist according to this article in the mobile space but you know how are

54:51 they doing in the desktop and server space because I mean I they're still

54:54 they're I mean they're heavy dominators in both of those faes and will continue

54:57 to be and that could be allocated acceptable loss they might have known

55:01 that that was going to happen and they were like oh this is going to cost this much to get done okay whatever let's do

55:05 it I mean big companies like this can lose 5 10 billion dollars in a lawsuit I

55:09 mean it's like so I don't when when I see numbers like that I'm like okay what's their what's their total

55:13 projected Revenue I mean if they made $20 billion that year and they're down

55:16 three billion because of the mobile Division I mean you know boohoo I mean

55:19 it's it's fine it's just one of those things where it's an acceptable loss while you're pushing into that space

55:24 yeah and the other thing is Intel I I remember reading a article a couple

55:29 years back where they were talking about you know they're starting to hit the cap of of the frequency that the chips can

55:33 operate at so now they're trying to go for more cores right they're trying to go out and kind of get that that breadth

55:36 over depth and uh so you know it's not I

55:40 think Intel here in the next couple years we're going to start seeing like you know 16 core 32 core CPUs these are

55:45 going to be like commonplace and it's been sorry go ahead no no no go ahead

55:50 it's been frustrating for the enthusiasts I think where you know we

55:53 would have loved to have Intel delivering us eight 12 Core Extreme

55:57 editions you know last year and they could have yes they could but Intel's

56:02 very patient I mean you look at AMD's 8 core solution that they that they did

56:07 deliver to the enthusiasts and did that product really make any sense you could

56:13 find benchmarks where an fx8350 had an

56:16 advantage due to its higher core count you could find those benchmarks but the

56:20 thing ran so hot and consumed so much power and had such a big Dy compared to

56:26 Intel's low power small D more Nimble

56:31 competitors that you you look at it and you go well was Intel smarter to just

56:35 not bother were they smarter to just be patient like this whole ARM thing that's

56:40 going on are they just are they just holding their cards to their chest going

56:44 you know what we're going to be ready with x86 eventually so it's going to

56:49 take until you know like Intel's they're the kind of company there's going to be

56:53 a one-year plan A 5year a 10 plan just

56:56 going to kind of go okay 2020 like we're

57:00 going to be ready we're going to crush it so we're just going to keep keep

57:04 staying ahead in terms of manufacturing we're going to keep being the technology

57:08 leader and this whole thing is going to happen and then we're going to we're

57:12 just going to come in and dominate because the thing about smartphone

57:15 processors and tablet processors is

57:18 those manufacturers are so eager to save a

57:23 dollar to win a Ben Mark and and find

57:26 the balance between those two things that I don't think there's any loyalty

57:29 to qualcom I don't think there's any loyalty to ARM you look at Samsung they

57:34 don't even use their own exos processor in tons of their products they use

57:38 whatever is the most competitive solution today to put into that phone to

57:44 deliver the best performance possible so taking over the smartphone market is as

57:49 simple as having the product that's

57:52 better at this exact now point in time I mean you look at how NVIDIA how much

57:57 momentum NVIDIA had with Tegra 2 and

58:01 then how that has translated into absolutely nothing for Tegra

58:05 4 yeah and and the other thing is you're not a smart move for a company is just

58:11 like you were saying with The Five-Year Plan and the 10-year plan is just because you have something better on

58:15 Deck doesn't mean that's the time to release it because you can still profit

58:18 from all of the generations leading up to it that's right I mean yeah you're

58:21 not you're not going to just go to the market and be like oh wow we created a 32 processor it's sound it works great

58:27 you can charge $2,000 for it it's cost effective here let's take it to Market

58:30 because then the problem is soon as you do that all of your competition is going

58:33 to start well they're either going to have their own product already on Deck ready to go and they're going to have to

58:36 counter and then both everybody loses right except for the consumer the

58:40 consumer is like woohoo we're hauling ass but at the same time the company's

58:43 lost all that money and revenue leading up to that and that's why I think you

58:47 see these inch Wars you know you see one one CPU manufacturer comes out with

58:51 something the next one comes out with something that's comparable plus one like literally plus one it's just a

58:55 little bit better then the next Generation comes out it's a little bit better it's a little bit better I find

59:00 that really hard to believe that that everything is just in these little

59:03 microns and inches you know I have to believe that those companies have a lot of tech that's on deck that they're just

59:07 holding back because it's not profitable to release it at this time you know what

59:12 I think there's some of that but I also

59:16 believe that because of the way the

59:20 technology advances that sometimes two

59:24 compan with completely different road maps and completely different technology

59:28 can actually just be neck and neck constantly like I don't believe for a

59:32 second that if AMD had a graphics card

59:35 that costs half as much and performed twice as fast as NVIDIA that they

59:40 wouldn't release it I believe they would I think they just can't those guys hate

59:45 I know I know don't I can't go into details but trust me I know this but uh

59:51 but uh the thing with G with the GPU guys I tend to agree with you they're

59:55 they're both they're both ramming their head against the wall neck and neck and the thing is they're not they're they're

59:59 drastically different a lot of people don't realize that that uh you know the

60:02 way Crossfire Works versus uh you know NVIDIA SLI is completely different the

60:07 way the AMD leans heavily on having more cores versus NVIDIA having less cores

60:11 and faster cores the Technologies are so radically different yet the end result

60:15 is so close every time every time so so

60:19 I tend to agree with you that I think it's more along the lines of when one

60:22 company gets a little bit faster the other company goes how do we tweak it to

60:25 make it better or just put a giant ass heat sink water cooler five you know

60:29 it's like what do we have to do to get it to its absolute bleeding edge and a

60:33 good example of this too would be back in the old CPU Wars like where you remember the old seller on 300a right y

60:39 the the old you know I called it the Nintendo cartridge because you literally plugged it in like one and uh I remember

60:44 those things you'd go buy these 300 A's and they would overclock 150 mehz out of

60:49 the box on air you could go from 300 to 450 mehz and if you had a chosen awesome

60:54 Malaysian one a sweet one you could get over 500 megahertz on those things I

60:58 mean that is a giant percentage jump in

61:01 performance out of CPU and I mean that kind of that's when the overclocking really took off from that point then

61:06 mother motherboard manufacturers like all right cat's out of the bag Intel's

61:09 obviously producing stuff that could be pushed a hell of a lot harder and now

61:13 the chip manufacturers expect you to do it right I mean inel sells you a CPU and

61:16 they're like oh here here's a 3.4 gigz CPU with turbo boost yeah and and if you

61:21 go in the BIOS it'll go 10 times faster I mean it's it it's 10 times faster you

61:27 10 times faster I gotta buy an ASUS board because it has a BIOS where you

61:30 select an option that says make it go faster and I'm not joking that's

61:33 literally what ASUS bioses are like now you go in there and it's like you know

61:37 used to be overclocking was like yeah I'm going to tweak my CPU get the voltage up there mess with the VC core

61:41 and the pl the was it the PLU voltage and everything no now you go in there

61:44 and it's like uh let's see faster fastest extreme

61:48 enter well you know an ASUS's ASUS's

61:52 self overclocking utility is actually

61:55 really good I mean gigabytes and MSI implementations with OC Genie and then

62:00 whatever Gigabyte calls their thing not very good they're just they're just kind

62:04 of taking a an approximate profile based on the you know thousand or couple

62:09 thousand chips that they get to validate their boards and they're kind of doing a

62:13 cross-section of okay well 90% of them are going to hit this setting so that's

62:18 the profile we're going to apply ASUS's actually goes and stress tests the CPU

62:24 and keeps increasing things and dials in an overclock to the point where the last

62:29 time I played with it which was I think

62:33 Ivy Bridge not Haswell it was within

62:37 like 100 mahz of what I could do on my own no no no exactly and and I think

62:42 mine was even a tighter tolerance than that when I first got this CPU I have a 30 uh was it I think I got a 393k in

62:48 this one running 4.5 a little over 4.5 right and uh and yeah I used that

62:52 utility I think to get like to 4. 3 4.4

62:56 and then the only reason the utility wouldn't take it any further is because

62:59 it wouldn't go beyond a certain threshold on the voltage well I'm liquid cooled so I was like screw you guys I'm

63:02 gonna just do it right uh but it's a great idea because that's exactly what

63:07 you should be doing and and this I'm I do a lot of automation work a lot of

63:11 what I do at my daily job is is actually developing automation um to run test

63:15 scenarios and things like that and it makes sense that when you write automation that you mimic what an actual

63:20 human being would do you try to make the same rational decisions and everything

63:23 and that's that's kind of the program's doing and I like that it takes that that

63:26 outlook on it it's like we're going to bump it up a little bit try it if it doesn't work we're going to back it off

63:30 or go a different direction if it doesn't work back it off going a different direction I like the fact that

63:34 the motherboard manufacturer was like all right well let's design the software

63:37 to work in tandem with the firmware BIOS or EFI or whatever you know depending on

63:41 your situation let's let's make it work in tandem with that so that the machine

63:44 can basically just sit there and power cycle itself and continuously adapt

63:47 itself and tell it stable calling ASUS

63:50 is uh calling ASUS is software something that you know works is sort of yeah well

63:56 honestly I I've I've played with ASUS software Gigabyte software I've even

64:00 played with some of the um for the GPU stuff uh what was it the ATI

64:03 overclocking utility God I can't remember what the name of it is uh really old one overdrive yeah and and

64:09 it's like this Ancient Ancient utility and it cracks me up because it like works on AMD processors and it works on

64:13 NVIDIA processors and you can tweak all these weird settings and everything I I

64:17 love it when you pick up a piece of software that looks like it was wholeheartedly designed for one thing

64:21 and it just works for everything else everything else yeah like like digital

64:24 Western Digital creates what is that the Western Digital uh data uh Drive utility

64:28 God my brain is not working today anyway well Cate has C tools and I know that

64:31 works on anything they all work on everything it cracks me up it's like the

64:34 other day I was my my boss was trying to get me to recover some data off of his

64:38 uh broken Samsung drive and I just happened to have the Western Digital

64:41 utility installed so I opened up Western Digital like yeah here I'll check out the drive yeah here I'll recover your

64:45 data I was like all right well all right Western Digital

64:49 that's uh that's pretty cool you know and it's like when you see stuff like the AMD tools working with NVIDIA you're

64:54 like how is this even possible I mean other than them sharing like a basic

64:57 software technology like direct deex or openg GL they're completely different

71:52 much to say about it but since then we

71:56 have benchmarked the thing and let me let me ask you this uh Jerry did you

72:01 know that the GTX 880m is actually

72:04 pretty damn close to the full spec of a GTX

72:07 770 no but that's pretty damn impressive being in a laptop what's the battery

72:11 life like 20 minutes the actually we the one thing we haven't benched is battery

72:15 life but I'm assuming it's not like hours and hours and hours when you're

72:19 gaming I think it's going to go like this like this is 100% it's like okay word processing you're good watching

72:23 movie you're good playing the game it's just going to bounce like but this does

72:27 have NVIDIA's new thing yeah we saw that work it does have Optimus so that means

72:31 that like his laptop that he's been using for the entire show which is a couple hours now is sitting at uh 67%

72:38 battery so when you're not at 100% oh that's right that was the one that

72:42 wasn't plugged in isn't it okay so so the so when you're not gaming out flat

72:46 out not that bad but the crazy thing

72:49 okay so it has a full GK 104 core in

72:53 there no disabled Cuda course it h it's

72:56 clocked about 20% higher than the last gen 7 ADM or whatever it was so it's

73:01 actually clocked at about 1 GHz we played around with overclocking a little

73:05 bit you can overclock it using standard overclocking tools and get this even

73:10 though the CPU so it's a 4700hq I think it is versus like a 4770k

73:17 and if you look at Intel's um if you go on Arc you can find out that those two

73:21 CPUs cost exactly the same so the clock speed of that CPU is a good like 20 30%

73:26 slower but our review of this is coming out tonight Luke benchmarked it against

73:31 a comparably priced desktop featuring a GTX 770 and a 4770k and it was what like

73:38 60 70 80% of the speed depending on the

73:41 game yeah and like you have to you have to realize that we also hit the same

73:45 spec as the laptop it's like we had a Thunderbolt motherboard and we had a

73:48 Blu-ray we we went to be feature complete we wanted to be feature

73:52 competitive with the laptop what's the res what's the res on the screen on that

73:55 thing it's 1080 so 1080p God so that

73:58 would probably run gez that would probably run like Battlefield 4 on Ultra like no sweat yeah that's insane laptop

74:06 the theme of the review is not you know

74:09 is this the lightest most portable thing in the world no it's not but the theme

74:14 of the review is is there room in the world for a laptop that exists between

74:20 the bulk of a desktop and the slimness of something like a thin and light

74:24 gaming notebook when the price to

74:27 Performance compared to a desktop is actually not that far off so our laptop

74:32 ended up costing I think a couple hundred more to have feature completeness so for things like the

74:36 desktop we got a webcam just a $2 webcam

74:40 because a laptop has a webcam it's part of the overall Computing experience we

74:44 grabbed a decent keyboard with a backlight because it's got a decent backlit keyboard on it so we did all

74:48 those things and it was about a couple hundred bucks out and I think it was around 70 to 80% of the performance

74:53 performance so very interesting no and the thing is

74:57 with me is like and and this is the other thing is some people like especially like women I would find like

75:02 my wife they like having compact Small Things fitting their purse carry around

75:05 like my wife she has she actually has a MacBook Air and she loves it she

75:08 absolutely loves thing I can't pry it out of her hands we will have one person

75:12 watching this show that is like I am a female and I want a 750 JayZ yeah that's

75:19 fine because this show is powered by the isusa g750 Jay-Z so go for right but

75:24 anyway I I would rather have a large

75:28 desktop replacement class laptop cuz weight's not an issue with me I'm 280 lbs I don't care I'll carry around a

75:32 freaking desktop on my back I don't care but uh I used to have this laptop my

75:35 favorite laptop ever of all time it was a Dell XPS you remember those Godly old

75:40 laptops they had 17inch screens on them they weighed like 20 pounds they were

75:44 like this thick yeah I I had one of those and it had the most amazing specs

75:49 for the time and I remember I gamed oh and it had a uh had had a 19 uh was it

75:54 1920 by or 1900 X 1200 screen so the old you know uh was it 9 by 10

76:00 aspect 16 by 10 yeah yeah the thing played everything absolutely everything

76:05 for like two years on Max settings after I got it it was a work I I didn't buy a

76:08 work work God I think it was like it's five grand or something for that thing but still for to have a laptop that for

76:13 two years had specs that just blew I mean it blew my desktop Dev machine away

76:17 everything I used it for absolutely everything I even had a dock so that you could just plug the damn thing in and

76:21 have it on all your laptops I like I think that that's the that's the

76:24 experience I'd like to move towards like I think ASUS is kind of headed in that

76:28 right direction where if you have a laptop that can produce the same

76:31 graphical horsepower as a desktop and it can support multiple monitors through a

76:35 dock and connect all your peripherals I would rather just take that with me

76:39 everywhere come home slap it down on my Dock and have that all available to me

76:43 and there's there is a market for that and so that was that was the that was

76:48 the journey that we were going on because you talk about how that one cost

76:51 you five grand or cost Microsoft 5 grand or someone paid grand for it whereas

76:56 this one's 2200 which to me is a lot more

77:00 reasonable and a lot closer when you consider the fact that it comes with a

77:03 monitor and it comes with keyboard and all that kind of stuff is a lot closer

77:06 to what I would expect an Enthusiast to pay for a gaming machine yeah I'd say

77:10 there's probably what about a $500 Delta there between building something comparable on the desktop um about 200

77:17 actually really wow if you make yourself you know cuz it has Thunderbolt and

77:21 stuff like so if you buy Blu-ray Drive like if you make yourself buy all the

77:25 same features and you can agree or disagree with this particular config but

77:29 it's available in a variety of configs with you know 16 gigs 24 gigs 32 gigs of

77:33 RAM however much you need so whether you agree with this particular config or not

77:37 if you want to build the same thing as a desktop we came around $200 short on the

77:41 desktop wow wow is it an SSD in that too standard equipment uh two ssds two 128s

77:47 and a one terab hard drive dude that is

77:50 that is whoa whoa two ssds and a one terab physical Drive yeah so they're m.2

77:55 ssds so there's no bottleneck there and then it's also got a and it's fully

77:59 upgradeable so you can just um you take out one screw and it's a nice little

78:04 retained screw and then you can access both of the SSD slots as well as the

78:09 hard drive slot and then two of the memory slots very very easily damn it's

78:12 kind of making my Surface RT here feel a little underpowered and

78:17 inadequate super thin well for what it's worth as much larger uh as my laptop is

78:23 than yours you are that much larger than me that's true that's true and my and my

78:28 computer system is that much larger too right so wow wow so now okay well um my

78:35 um helicopter is larger than yours oh

78:38 don't you mean your Lamborghini yeah my Lambo Lambos aren't about the size my

91:47 because you were looking at a screen that was only about I think it was like a 20 little 20inch screen yeah and you

91:52 could get closer to it and like look out and it and it tricked your brain into

91:56 thinking I mean like you were looking out a window it looked like you could see this huge amazing area so if you

92:00 zoomed in on a photo or something like that you could easily just tilt the

92:03 phone and look around and get it closer and everything like that it'd be a really natural experience for looking it

92:08 very large High detailed photography I think cool I like it if it works

92:12 anywhere near half decently have you seen an eye tracking that doesn't suck

92:15 yet yeah no it's not going to work we already know we know it won't it'll be like you'll turn it and it'll lag and

92:19 then you'll throw up because it'll screw with your brain wrong the the Toby video that we tried to film

92:27 very many attempts because of how not working it was um and like every ey

92:32 tring technology I've ever seen not working and I fully expect this to come

92:51 they used the magnet was because there was the least amount of leg between it it it was tracking a magnetic field

93:00 within like 10 Ines of the receiver for it to work properly so when you're

93:05 dealing with cameras it's like I don't care how fast the CPU is we're a long

93:08 way off from having zero leg when you have to do image processing to figure

93:11 out where some so far away and combine that with the fact that the image is

93:15 going to be completely rubbish because I

93:18 mean you look okay you look at you look at how hard it is how much work it takes

93:24 how much how much focusing on this and you know uh exposure that on an $8,000

93:31 piece of equipment like what we have to get a good image out of that that would

93:35 actually allow even a person to to to

93:38 look at the eyes and go yeah that's exactly where they're looking now your

93:42 CPU has to figure that out with like a webcam I'm honestly wondering if it's

93:46 more going to be just like physical head position cuz they say eye tracking but

93:51 what they're talking about seems more like if your head was over here you're

93:55 probably looking in that General Direction that's going to throw me for a
