0:01 welcome to the W show guys the oh we
0:04 apparently dropped a frame but then it doesn't detected up there so we're going
0:09 to go ahead and hope that everything's okay welcome to the W show guys the week
0:12 where you watch us talk about the technical difficulties that occurred
0:18 before the I don't know the show I've been off for like 3 weeks like no like
0:24 not vacation because I clearly haven't had a vacation like the marks under my
0:28 eyes and yours too for that matter uh but I mean like not not on like not
0:32 on fire we've got a great show for you guys today though so AMD mantle is
0:37 becoming a bigger and bigger deal pretty much by the day for those of you who
0:41 aren't familiar mantle is AMD's new API that seeks to well pretty much take the
0:46 place of direct deck and open well not take the place but
0:50 augment and by augment I mean don't use the other one use this new one it's
0:54 better um so we're going to have Ryan shroud on to talk about that actually
0:58 very shortly as soon as we can get in touch with them do you even have a username for him like did you send him
1:02 the login details no okay well let's send those over to him worst case
1:05 scenario I think I have him in my phone so I can call him just be like yo
1:10 talk you you good to go oh I
1:17 don't okay um so anyway let's we we'll
1:21 get that rolling as soon as we can and then uh the riaa and MPAA are
1:26 introducing a new ele well are trying to introduce a new Elementary School
1:30 curriculum that would have students in the United States learn about the
1:35 dangers of piracy so that's something
1:38 that they're lobbying for right now but hasn't necessarily been implemented yet
1:41 with teachers having some fairly reasonable objections to it fairly
1:45 reasonable next up we've got lsi's new
1:48 sandforce controller so for those of you who don't know LSI acquired sandforce
1:51 some time ago that will enable truly Next Generation SSD performance and
1:56 finally AMD news just keeps coming I mean good AMD news the 290 looks like it
2:02 can be flashed to a 290x and we're even seeing reports of these cards being
2:07 available pre flashed for people to just buy for cheaper which is extremely cool
2:14 so without further Ado it's intro time and I have no idea how loud it is so
2:19 this will be I can't monitor so let me
2:22 let me actively change it here okay yes
2:26 I'll I'll it'll be loud at the beginning so turn everything down for a second be
2:29 ready yourself and
2:32 going I don't know there it
2:35 is okay good enough I think that's a it's not exactly
2:40 where it's supposed to be but it's
2:53 oh so apparently there's no sound on the intro which means I don't really have to
2:57 worry about uh talking over it today today so guys Squarespace is our sponsor
3:02 for the show today you can head over to squarespace.com and use offer code
3:06 linus1 which is good for November to get
3:10 10% off your first membership so trials
3:14 are free and actually we had a promotion that we ran two weeks ago where we are
3:18 giving away a Squarespace website to
3:21 someone who designed it and tweeted with the appropriate hashtag so we're going
3:25 to be picking the winner live here on the show this week and big thanks again
3:29 to Squarespace so the easy way to build your own website and I i' never actually
3:33 said what they do to build your own website that is uh easy to use and easy
3:38 to manage with Dynamic sort of Hosting
3:41 that can oh wait what dynamic sort of Hosting that can wait what apparently
3:46 that was apparently we were too quiet during that lower lower Dam you know
3:51 what I don't even like I don't even know I don't even know what people are
3:55 talking about so Squarespace is our sponsor today they're awesome offer code
3:58 Linus 11 easy website creation tool it's like geoc cities except it doesn't suck
4:03 did you upload the YouTube video did I upload the YouTube video saying that
4:07 we're live yeah okay cool how come I'll just make it sure oh I I should probably
4:11 make sure that it actually you know managed to make it especially with all
4:15 the like awesomeness going on with YouTube lately and things just generally
4:19 not working yeah yeah it's it's pushing to subscriber feeds right now so they'll
4:22 start uh they'll start tuning in all right so uh I have no idea who's calling
4:27 me from Toronto but now's not the time oh that's definitely I know who that is
4:32 oh yeah I can't take that call right now so yeah I don't know you might want to
4:36 you might want to get in touch with someone related to that person to maybe
4:39 let them know that now's not a good time all right so let's what's up I don't
4:44 have my phone so nope yeah you do this right here oh I do see like a boss all
4:48 right so let's move on to our first topic here this is something that I
4:53 suspect uh slick here hasn't done too much reading up on because it is like
5:00 no don't worry you don't have to talk isn't it amazing it's kind of hilarious
5:03 okay guys we are actually going to we're going to try to watch this together I
5:07 hope that the volume's okay because this
5:11 thing is epic beyond all belief this is
5:14 ever Jane the virtual world of Jane Austin is a Kickstarter for an MMO that
5:21 I mean I'm not even going to I'm not even going to color my my words here I'm
5:27 just going to read from the site okay in
5:30 the virtual world of Jane Austin it is not about kill or be killed but invite
5:35 and be invited with gossip our weapon of
5:39 choice so we're just going to watch A Brief snippet of the video here together
5:44 if this is ever going to load because for some reason tethering is the slowest
5:48 thing ever on this phone compared to the H I got my one back today and I'm super
5:52 stoked to go back to it like all the
5:56 stoked to go back to it did you guess
5:59 did I what you bet okay sweet yeah don't worry we're we're on this we're like
6:03 okay well whatever we can't watch this video cuz it's just not going to load
6:07 because our Wi-Fi hotspot needs to just choke on a bag of uh uh dongers so
6:14 basically okay get this guys so ever Jane is a virtual world that allows
6:18 people to roleplay in Regency period England okay so our quests are derived
6:21 from players actions and stories and we gossip rather than swords and Magic to
6:26 demolish our enemies and Aid our friends so right now you can actually download a
6:31 prototype so the Prototype includes the gossip and invitation system so you can
6:36 use gossip and invitations to build your
6:39 own um you know reputation and when you
6:42 have a better reputation then presumably you can have if they reach some of their
6:46 stretch goals you could have like you know a um uh hold on you go fishing yeah
6:52 no no that's for the men not that I
6:57 mean okay in their defense in the world of Jane
7:02 Austin at that time that would have been a thing uh so hold on hold on uh oh oh
7:09 okay so iterate okay here okay we're going to go back to this all right so
7:13 iteration one is slothing system which
7:16 is part of Gossip so you can find out who's gossiping about you you can write
7:20 letters between characters iteration two gets dinner parties balls that's not the
7:24 only thing about this that'll be balls and travel between Villages carriages
7:27 and horses and iteration three adds hunting and sewing and upgrades gossip
7:31 to use language parsing so there's card games and okay so stretch goals you can
7:35 get estate planning with a $200,000 stretch goal um you can get Landscaping
7:40 with a $250,000 stretch goal so they're going to add Landscaping to to the uh
7:46 whatever this is and farming Yeah so basically I mean you
7:52 know what I I don't know what to say
7:56 about this that won't offend someone
8:00 I think girl gamers deserve better I think that this is like trying to appeal
8:06 to the most stereotypical girl gamer
8:09 because you know what the Sims which is a notoriously you know cross-gendered
8:14 not to say cross-gendered but um appealing to both genders game because
8:19 it's role playing and you can it's it's it's light it's simulation okay this is
8:25 not simulation this is like um this is
8:28 like taking all the things that I think and like and if if it wasn't a female
8:33 like like if it wasn't a female coming up with the idea I would have looked at
8:36 this as like uh a cynical man trying to
8:40 build a game for girls I think if they made bully
8:45 but like more mild not like not like
8:49 actually bully they made W what's the name of that show I don't watch TV so
8:53 it's kind of a problem um
8:57 Bad Girls Mean Girls Mean Girls yeah there we go
9:02 mean girls if they made bully but like Mean Girls I think that could maybe work
9:05 that could maybe work I think guys would play that I think everyone would play that see like that kind of makes more
9:10 sense this is I think too mild and I think she's going after Jane Austin
9:14 stories which while they were super popular for a long time before and are I
9:20 think probably still hard to read man they're hard to read I don't read I've
9:24 read a couple I've read uh I've read um I've heard they're good I just don't
9:28 read them I read Emma I read prej both
9:31 of those are supposed to be really good I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as well which was
9:36 better so I think I bought my mom Pride and Prejudice yeah so okay you know a
9:41 great comment in the twitch chat there's no such thing as a girl gamer there's
9:45 just Gamers and some of them happen to be girls and this is targeted towards a
9:50 thing that doesn't exist a girl gamer who's like every negative stereotype
9:56 about you know what gaming girls would do so there that's what that's what I
9:59 don't like about that Kickstarter project it's not going to get funded by the look of things so I don't have to
10:04 worry about it too much but what I am planning to do sometime in the next
10:07 little while as I will be downloading the demo and I'll be trying it out
10:11 because maybe I'm wrong maybe I come back to the W show next week and I'm
10:15 like yep I was wrong I was wrong and they were right and it's amazing I'll
10:19 just shoot myself yeah speaking of things that I was wrong about something
10:23 that we both failed to mention last week when we were talking about PS Vita and
10:27 Playstation 4 streaming speaking of which I ordered what you got what's that
10:32 what is it
10:37 C
10:43 what I think Curtis Chris Chris yeah
10:49 okay I think I think I know which Chris this is um okay so we just got a cake um
10:57 I don't know how people are even doing this this but um I know
11:02 how it's got chocolate on it and like I
11:06 I don't know I don't know how a cake in the shape of a knock to a fan was
11:10 obtained but I have to admire the uh the
11:14 uh I don't know whatever it is that it
11:17 took to come up with this particular idea they can't stop laughing okay it's
11:23 like ghost and ixie and foxhound and mape and windspeed and all those guys it
11:30 probably ended up being um just guessing
11:33 it was probably wher who actually put the order in you know what's funny is I
11:37 actually just started playing Portal 2 last night so so I'm having like like like it
11:43 is a lie because it's not actually a fan I know the cake is a
11:49 lot uh it seems like something that should be cold do you mind uh putting it
11:53 in I guess freezer or fridge isce I
11:58 don't know maybe someone can tell us what whether it goes in the freezer or
12:01 the fridge so apparently it was a whole bunch of mods um and a whole bunch of
12:07 the mods friends well thank you very much guys that is uh that is very very
12:13 cool of you that's actually pretty epic that's hilarious what a what a wow
12:17 moment that is um oh I think Ryan's here okay all
12:22 right so we'll bring Ryan on right away after this but okay so something both he
12:25 and I failed to mention last week when we were talking about PSV stream as well
12:29 as NVIDIA Shield streaming is that Sony
12:33 had Remote Play Back in 2005 2006 and it
12:36 was a feature that allowed you to stream your gameplay to a device of your choice
12:39 in fact it was way more versatile than NVIDIA's solution because it allowed you
12:43 to stream to phones and PCs and you could stream your PSP games from your
12:46 PSP to your PS3 and play them there so this was posted by Tom Lambert 01 on the
12:51 Forum so thank you Tom for the correction we genuinely do appreciate it
12:55 uh this is something that because I wasn't a PS3 gamer never really paid any
12:59 attention to any of it I was actually completely not aware of so there you go
13:04 thank you for bringing that to our attention all right next up we've got uh
13:08 actually are we ready to have Ryan join us I can't am i g to have audio if I put
13:12 these on you should because I can't hear a thing in one second all right okay so
13:18 I'll move on to something else in the meantime then nope they're not talking
13:21 let's talk about the oh they are talking okay so we can hear those guys but we
13:26 can't hear Ryan yet we can hear who uh I just oh wow hey there it is okay
13:31 excellent that's most good most good all
13:35 right so is this uh listening to anything yet or no I believe that is
13:40 listening to Ryan so I think they can hear Ryan there we go whoa Hi how are
13:44 you Ryan good all right so uh tell me how
13:49 was the AMD show last week you know what the Apu 13 event had
13:56 had surprisingly more news than I expected to see
13:59 from it kind of didn't really know what to expect going into it but they talked
14:03 about uh you know Cav Apu and um what
14:07 are the other ones Bea and Mullins then they talked about mantle and they they
14:10 had some good content there actually okay so let's start with uh
14:15 let's start with let's start with mantle um what is what was your initial take
14:20 when we first heard about it at GPU 13 versus hearing about it
14:25 now you know I I don't think a whole Bunch has changed yet right so the when
14:32 we first heard about it it was Battlefield 4 only uh although that's a
14:36 pretty big deal and then we heard it was going to be frostbite engine and now
14:40 they actually showed two different developers in addition to dice that are
14:44 integrating mantle and they actually
14:47 showed performance metrics of some kind not the kind that we're used to seeing
14:52 like frame rates and stuff but uh looking at what do we call it draw calls
14:57 per second um where there used to be batch levels of 3,000 to 5,000 and now
15:03 this developer was showing a real-time strategy game that was running like a
15:06 100,000 batch calls and that doesn't
15:10 directly translate to Performance but it
15:13 it means that there's one less bottleneck holding them back from
15:17 improving performance in other ways let's try to explain to the viewers for
15:20 a moment like what something like uh like draw calls means to Performance
15:25 compared to the I mean I guess the numbers that we're typically used to
15:28 seeing like Tera flops or pixel fill rates or numbers like that so A draw
15:33 call is like the the setup process of
15:38 the game engine right so the processor has to the not the GPU the actual Intel
15:43 or AMD CPU has to organize a bunch of
15:47 draw calls it says what is the game engine actually asking me to do what's
15:51 it what does it want to draw what does it want to see and it compiles these
15:55 into groups called batches and this kind
15:58 of batching process has been a limiting factor for gain developers in certain
16:03 ways uh at this event you know we heard developers talk about that it was for
16:07 years and years been a you never cross
16:10 that three to 5,000 draw calls per
16:14 batch uh level and it was just something that was assumed throughout the industry
16:19 and what that did was it kind of limited
16:22 how creative they could be with designs
16:26 of characters polygon counts Shader counts that kind of thing and if you can
16:32 expand that up which mantle does it it limits it gets rid of the API overhead
16:38 and it allows these developers to kind of directly code to the processor in a
16:42 much more efficient manner then by having these additional batch call
16:48 capabilities they have the ability to improve visual uh just visuals or
16:53 performance one way or the other now one of the thing one of the ways Chris
16:56 Roberts explained it to me so
16:59 um that's uh that's Chris Roberts from cloud Imperium game so the the maker of
17:04 Star Citizen one of the ways he explained it to me was that you can use
17:08 the processing power of the graphics card to say for example draw some rock
17:13 and then if you can have uh you know an order of magnitude more draw calls you
17:17 can take those same resources and you can replicate that rock all over the
17:21 place in order to make for a more varied um exciting looking environment is that
17:26 the main benefit I guess of having more draw calls
17:30 I I'd say that's one of the primary benefits of it for sure it's
17:34 um it basically opens up the pallet for
17:37 these designers and these coders to do things they couldn't do
17:41 before we when we talk about benchmarks and performance we're used to
17:44 bottlenecks like frame rates or how many
17:48 threads are being actually utilized on a processor but for the most part we don't
17:51 really know what is the processor really doing most of the time and this setup is
17:56 part of that so imp implementing mantle
17:59 gives developers the capability to be more
18:04 creative and Institute things like duplicate or Not Duplicate but uh being
18:09 more creative and offering up more options to increase poly counts or
18:12 increase character counts and you know increased resolution or granularity of
18:18 uh surroundings and stuff like that so it's it's more about enabling artists to
18:23 be more openly creative and game
18:26 developers to not have as many restrictions as they used to have I I
18:29 don't think when the Battlefield 4 version of Manel comes out that it's
18:32 going to be 100% faster I think it's realistically going to be somewhere
18:37 between like 10 and 15% faster than the
18:40 standard dx11 version so it's it's just a matter of every time you remove a
18:45 bottleneck something else crops up so it's but it's it's like a constant
18:49 battle that Hardware developers and Driver developers have to worry about
18:53 finding now speaking of uh you talked about the what the we don't really know
18:57 what the processor is doing doing a little while back there um one of I
19:00 think the most impressive demos that AMD showed off at their event was
19:05 downclocking an fx8350 to 2 GHz so for
19:09 for those of you who don't know what they're normally clocked at um that's
19:12 that's like damn near 60% of its normal
19:15 clock speed and then they showed that a Radeon R9 290x was still GPU Bound in
19:24 the in the game that they were showing off as opposed to being CPU Bound in
19:27 spite of the fact they had turned down the single-threaded performance of their
19:31 CPU so dramatically um is this just is
19:34 this just better optimization in general I mean we've already seen that Frostbite
19:39 3 uh whether you're running mantle obviously we're not running mantle yet
19:42 but whether you're running mantle or not is able to make pretty good use of
19:46 multiple cores so is this just a general optimization thing or is mantle really
19:50 going to pave the way for us to not need very powerful processors
19:54 anymore I think it's going to help right and that's keep in mind where what from
19:59 what position AMD is coming at right they have the lower performance
20:04 processors in this battle against Intel so anytime they can say push off that
20:09 bottleneck to the GPU instead of the CPU that's a big Advantage for them uh but I
20:14 do believe that and I think most people that are PC Gamers will realize that you
20:20 don't have to have a core i7 4960x to play
20:23 games you would much rather spend that no hold on hold on Ryan hold on just a
20:27 minute I think that uh when I when I got
20:31 uh when I got far cry I think it was
20:34 there's a thing that pops up and it's like plays best on core2 Duo extreme so
20:39 I'm pretty sure you need an extreme addition to play games I mean that's been true for years now well I hope you
20:43 didn't upgrade away from the core2 duo because then your performance would probably go down right I get such a kick
20:49 out of that when they do uh when Intel used to do that branding of a specific
20:53 product right in front of a game it's like guys that's that's relevant for
20:57 like 18 months
21:00 maybe sorry go go ahead yes you don't need an extreme addition to play
21:05 games yeah I mean you don't you don't need it and you
21:10 can game on a on a quad core Apu as long
21:14 as you have a discreet graphics card and you're still going to get really good PC
21:17 gaming performance and I think mantle is
21:21 is a really interesting you know step down that
21:25 pathway of integrating things differently I'm still not sold on it uh
21:29 being kind of This Global success that AMD wants us to believe it is you know
21:34 we we've seen several developers integrated it now um we've also seen
21:38 several developers integrate how long term that'll be so say again I said
21:43 we've also seen several developers integrate
21:47 physx right right and and it doesn't
21:50 necessarily mean that the long-term viability of that technology is is is
21:56 solid Okay so I mean what else really
21:59 stood out to you about the event maybe talk about cavar because you you
22:02 mentioned just a second ago there um a quadcore apu's fine for gaming as long
22:06 as you still have a discret GPU do you think that's still the case with
22:11 cavar yeah I I really do uh there are
22:15 there are use cases where even today Richland or Trinity is going to be okay
22:20 for 10p gaming at lower low to medium
22:23 settings and canar improves that prob probably 4050 % I mean we showed um a
22:31 video where they had the cavar demo system running Battlefield 4 at 1080p at
22:35 medium quality settings so that's that's impressive
22:39 technologically like I've been doing this for a long time and to see that
22:43 this Flagship high-end PC gaming title
22:46 looks really good first of all Battlefield 4 looks really good at
22:49 medium quality settings so an advantage that am has with the demo right off the
22:54 bat uh but they're running it off of an APU that's drawn I don't know 100 Watts
22:59 120 watts or something like that that's pretty impressive but the people that
23:04 listen to your show the people that listen to our show and and and they they
23:09 want better than that right and you can get better than that for not a whole lot
23:12 of money so yeah I I think they're going down you know they're they're
23:16 progressing down the right path this was always the plan even though the the kind
23:20 of dark secret secret that came out during the show was that this
23:24 performance is actually lower than what they had said was going to the
23:28 performance of cavar a year ago right right they had to lower clocks on the
23:32 CPU and GPU right okay um can you wait
23:36 what just happened oh
23:40 okay okay um Luke can you actually mute Ryan for a second or Ryan can you turn
23:45 on push to talk because we're getting some feedback from your mic whenever you're not talking I think it's trying
23:50 to I think it's trying to I can I can use I've got a foot pedal for mute I can
23:54 do that Wicked okay thanks man um okay
23:57 so the thing that I wanted to talk about is I think I think the real issue with
24:02 with the apus and the strategy that AMD has here is they're trying to do what
24:06 Intel's doing where they're positioning their apus as as a premium sort of as a
24:12 price premium when they first introduce them they're they're trying to ask for
24:16 more money for them then I think then rather than just bringing them to Market
24:21 at what I really think is a is a fair price so an example of this is something
24:25 like Richland where their top tier Apu
24:28 the uh 6800k I guess it is is like
24:32 $140 and then you can get something that offers pretty near the same performance
24:37 that isn't fm2 Plus or whatever so something like an A8
24:40 5600k for $40 less which when we're
24:44 talking about1 or $140 CPUs is a very
24:48 very significant difference with that
24:51 $40 I I I think that the the difference
24:54 in slightly better CPU performance and then maybe I mean when they they introduce cavar dramatically better GPU
25:00 performance is not going to be justified
25:03 by the performance that's there so you're going to have to invest in a more
25:07 expensive CPU AMD is going to want a premium from you for the latest technology you're going to need a more
25:12 expensive motherboard because once again the motherboard manufacturers are first
25:16 coming to market with the premium chipsets for what to me really is a very
25:20 entry-level platform so by the time you
25:23 do the CPU and motherboard cost comparisons again a last generation Apu
25:29 you're probably spending another $60 to $70 now $60 to $70 is an awful long way
25:35 towards a pretty decent dedicated graphics card we did a console killer
25:40 type build for our image quality comparison where we gave ourselves a
25:44 $450 budget so smack dab in between the price of the two nextg consoles and uh
25:51 what we ended up with was a 5600k so we found the cheapest quad core Apu we
25:55 could we grabbed a 7770 then we went
25:58 with a cheapo hard drive Cheapo case you know basically doorstop power supply but
26:02 at least like it's an ntech basic or something I think so it's nothing
26:06 special but it's also not going to explode immediately and we were able to
26:10 achieve similar image quality in Battlefield 4 as what we could get with
26:14 a PS4 or an Xbox One and obviously much more functionality and that wouldn't be
26:18 possible with cavar did you include an operating
26:23 system in that build price uh 550 with OS so 4 50 Hardware 550 OS cuz we we we
26:30 did a similar thing and and it was disheartening to see 20% of your system
26:35 build pricee be relegated to uh a copy of Windows 8 or whatever hey demos but
26:42 it's coming yeah yeah it can't come soon enough the the but the your point is is
26:46 is pretty pretty valid right the when cavar comes out it's going to be a
26:50 little bit more expensive than Richland uh is it going to be justified
26:55 it all it all depends on on the consumer I don't think somebody who is a gamer is
27:00 going to want this part but if you're somebody that is building a PC for
27:05 another purpose a home theater PC or a small form factor build that maybe you
27:10 already have your main rig upstairs and you want to have something small and modest downstairs or in you know at a at
27:16 a at your office or something it will be able to do some of that stuff and that's
27:21 kind of what AMD is leaning on uh for their advantages over what they can with
27:26 Intel because they do not have they're a severe disadvantage on the processor
27:30 Side Y so they've got to push this GPU side and and to be completely honest
27:34 they they may not have that lead on the GPU side for very long in terms of the
27:39 integrated processors because Intel is
27:42 continuing continuing to increase their GPU performance on these uh integrated
27:48 processors these processor Graphics I guess as Intel calls them and they they
27:53 I think it'll still be a little while before they catch up but they still an
27:58 and it's weird process node aside
28:01 inteleg or Intel relegates so relegates
28:06 oh man dude I'm tired Intel allocates so
28:10 little of the die size I mean when you when you look when you look at the
28:14 actual D photographs so little of it is the actual CPU that even if you factor
28:19 out their process node Advantage AMD to
28:22 achieve worse performance and worse power consumption is
28:28 is is spending an awful lot more die area on the CPU so Intel's going to have
28:32 this Advantage where just in terms of the sheer amount in in terms of the
28:36 sheer die size they're going to be able to allocate a ton more space to a GPU
28:41 just to make up for whatever advantages AMD might have in terms of their
28:45 experience building gpus um and I I think that's going to continue to help
28:50 Intel close the gap as they get more experienced that's the point that I'm
28:55 laboriously trying to get to here
28:58 well Intel has this huge Advantage with its manufacturing right so they'll
29:02 they're they're trying to utilize that manufacturing advantage to go after the
29:06 ARM market and they're also going to try to use some of that on uh to to make up
29:11 for these Graphics deficits that they've traditionally had um it's it'll be
29:16 interesting to see this coming generation like the end of 2014 Intel
29:21 does versus what AMD does because Intel has slowly been increasing the
29:25 percentage of the die that they use for graphics y Intel is probably in the 40%
29:29 range with Haswell I think um and AMD is
29:33 just over 50% with Cav and it's a better
29:37 50% right the the the units that AMD has built are better and more efficient than
29:42 what Intel has built but that will eventually change and if you're running
29:45 at 22 nanometer or 14 nanometer next
29:49 year you have a little bit more flexibility about how much die space you
29:53 can just create for those parts so it'll be it'll be interesting and integated
29:57 space in 2014 to be sure especially because there's no pressure on Intel to
30:02 increase IPC on the CPU side so if they can go okay we're going to shrink to 14
30:06 nanometer we're going to do pretty much nothing other than optimize for power on
30:11 the CPU side we're going to allocate all that extra die space to GPU and it's Off
30:16 to the Races yeah I mean that's and that that's
30:21 unfortunately been the case for Intel for several years about not really
30:25 pushing forward on the CPU space you know it's they after the pennium 4
30:30 disaster they slowly built back up so that they were the dominant uh the
30:34 dominant CPU vendor over Athlon and and Phenom and all that and when AMD could
30:40 no longer compete they just kind of said H okay we're good where we're at you
30:44 know we get those sporadic updates like the Sandy Bridge e And The Ivy Bridge e
30:49 and you know they can pack 10 or 12 cores onto a Zeon but they're not really
30:53 changing anything drastically like they hope to do on the graphic side
30:59 yeah that's uh that's extremely frustrating I think for enthusiasts
31:03 everywhere so we've got a couple other topics here that we could uh guys if you
31:07 have any questions for Ryan go ahead and hit us up on Twitter at Linus and uh
31:12 we'll do we'll do a Twitter Blitz with him at some point here but I'd like to
31:15 get your take on lsi's upcoming sandforce FF SF 3700
31:24 controller I had not looked at that yet
31:28 okay forget about it then let's let's move on do all of our storage stuff so
31:32 don't don't don't worry about it I'll hit you with something that's a little bit uh ah yes okay you can buy pre
31:39 flashed Radeon R9 290s that have been
31:42 flashed with 290x bioses what is your take on all of this and how cannibalized
31:47 has AMD made their own high-end lineup I
31:50 mean we have so far we haven't found an
31:54 X card with a non-x equivalent that makes any sense to buy
31:58 bu yeah the 290x is is increasingly becoming a more and
32:04 more kind of derelict part in in the uh
32:07 in the PC market right when it launched everybody loved it it was this super
32:11 high performance card it was less expensive than the GTX
32:14 780 and the Titan and then then NVIDIA
32:18 dropped its prices I think further than AMD expected they released AMD releases
32:22 the 290 undercutting their own part by a huge margin even though performan is
32:27 very close and you can like overclock it
32:31 a little bit more and you're going to go well beyond that and you're going to save what is it
32:35 $150 yeah it's a significant that's pretty big
32:39 makx weird now have you guys played
32:42 around with how 290 and 290x for that matter perform when you are able to keep
32:47 thermals under control I haven't used anything except
32:53 the reference coolers on that but I have I have run reference coolers let's say
32:57 at higher fan speeds than should be loud on your ears um and and it does it does
33:04 well it does well but like uh I mean the most you know the most recent issue that
33:08 we were had is we had in a couple of the 290x retail cards and we were comparing
33:13 how that compared to the the reference cards that that I got and I think that
33:17 you got as well and uh that's that was the big issue that they had in cranking
33:22 up the fan speeds a little bit to making sure that everything was consistent was
33:26 kind of an odd move as well the one thing that's weird about the 290
33:30 compared to the 290x is that the 290 is
33:33 louder it's default State than the 290x it's it's got less it's got fewer
33:39 Shader units but they run them at a
33:43 lower speed but at a higher fan speed so it's running at its top clocks more
33:47 consistently it's a really odd kind of balancing move they've did they've done
33:52 to kind of push themselves out of a market that they were doing very well in
33:57 it I know 290x was competitive from the
34:00 start I mean did they I I don't know it was honestly it wasn't as confusing
34:06 quite to me as 270 was because 270 I
34:09 didn't even know about so at GPU 13 they
34:13 didn't talk about it at all unless you were in a secret briefing room where you
34:17 have to have lasers coming out of your eyes to be in that one did you know about
34:22 270 uh no not until I got an email that
34:25 said hey there's one on their way to you and I and it was as I was kind of getting
34:29 ready to leave for the Apu 13 event and I said well I'm not going to be able to
34:33 get this tested and stuff before I leave for this event so how you know give me a
34:38 little bit of background on it and they said oh wasen to the slide deck and
34:41 usually if they're not real eager to brag about what the product is that
34:44 there's usually something you need to be uh to pay attention to and I got the
34:48 specs and I looked at it and I almost emailed them back I said no no no no you
34:52 sent me the 270x specs so what did you
34:56 what did you really mean to send me and I started looking at it I was like wow there's like no difference here and then
35:00 there's a $20 MSRP difference you want
35:03 to talk about congesting the market
35:07 you're supposed to do that against your competition not really against your own
35:10 gpus yeah R2 r270 video I think the the
35:13 thumbnail was something like why does this
35:17 exist it's like they might as well have just price dropped 27x and not bothered
35:22 to you know come up with another skew mind you from from okay if you're going
35:26 to look at the from a from an AMD perspective they've sure gotten a lot of
35:31 Impressions without actually paying for advertising by doing so many GPU
35:36 launches here yeah you know AMD did this with the
35:40 7,000 series I don't know remember if they did with the 6000 series with the
35:44 7,000 series I remember being equally annoyed with uh here's the 7970 and now
35:50 the 7950 and now the 7870 and then the 7850 and so it's like every 10 days
35:54 there em graphics for the G Edition right right right I mean there
36:00 was it was just just you know do a few
36:03 of them together I thought they would do better this time they did the 280 270
36:06 and 260 kind of as a as a bundle uh but
36:10 I think they more did that because it was a Rebrand and selling each of those
36:14 individually as new products 10 days separated would probably be even more of
36:19 a headache for him but uh yeah I mean it's
36:22 definitely you know that's one way that these these vendors kind of create
36:27 interest and excitement for their product is if we just tweak this one
36:30 thing everybody kind of has to talk about it again whereas if the product is
36:35 just sitting on the shelf and we've already done our reviews and their board
36:39 partners aren't coming out with something really exciting to get us to write it about it again they start to
36:43 suffer so I don't think they I mean it's so quick I don't think they did it for
36:47 here for this but something to keep an eye out for all right now we get asked
36:52 this a lot I know it's sort of a terrible question but I'm going to ask
36:56 it to you anyway if you had to pick So based on
37:00 what you are projecting with respect to mantle I mean if you're ter question I
37:04 know okay if you had to but but the reality of it is it doesn't matter the
37:10 reality of it is unless to make this decision unless you're someone like you
37:13 or me or Ryan who gets to pick whatever damn graphics card they want and put it
37:17 in their system and they can swap them at a moment's notice Ryan right now what do you think
37:23 is a more compelling technology mantle or g-sync because those are really the
37:27 the the big new things from both
37:30 camps um I know I know it's a terrible
37:33 question I'm sorry to do it to it's gsync I
37:37 mean it's it's g-sync but I'll I'll so
37:41 I'll say this the g-sync is the most
37:44 interesting technology for me in gaming kind of period right now but I'm not
37:50 really super excited about it in its current state right on a 1080p TN panel
37:56 H it's it's it's much better but I would love to see it on a IPS 1080P or if
38:01 you're going to keep me on TN put me on a 25 by14 panel 4K is a little bit of a
38:06 stretch still but um people people like
38:09 us that have been you know kind of feeding the Enthusiast base about hey
38:13 you need to upgrade to this 2560 X 1440 monitor because that is the next thing
38:18 or look at this 4K stuff you know we did some 4K demos and this is really
38:21 expensive but if you want to look at what it's going to be like in a year or two years this is awesome now to kind of
38:27 be pulled back into hey check out this great technology on 1080p only right now
38:33 it's a little bit it's a little bit disheartening for that but for mantle
38:37 it's such kind of it's It's So Far Away it feels so far away even though
38:42 Battlefield 4 is supposed to be out this year yeah with the m support it just
38:46 yeah the benefits of it feel so indirect
38:50 or kind of I don't know wishy-washy like I'm not exactly sure what I'm getting
38:53 with it whereas with g-sync I I know and
38:57 you know exactly what you're getting with it because you got to see it in person and that's something that people
39:02 listening don't have the advantage of here's the thing about mantle and uh I
39:05 mean with battle Battlefield 4 specifically what what Luke and I
39:08 actually noticed because we were we were capturing footage from Battlefield 4 and
39:12 Assassin's Creed 4 was that Battlefield 4 really doesn't have an issue with
39:16 tearing in the same way that some other games do so for example Assassin's Creed
39:20 4 becomes a tearing disgusting mess as
39:24 soon as you in certain areas yeah as soon as you Pan the camera in certain
39:27 areas and it's it's just it's like it's unplayable it's at 60 FPS but who cares
39:32 cuz it looks awful I I tried it in other areas though it's like very specifically
39:36 in certain areas so on the other hand Battlefield 4 we didn't really have an
39:40 issue with it so I look at that and I go okay well yeah if you throw another 10
39:44 even or 20% or even up to you know 40%
39:47 performance at it that's great with that said Battlefield 4 is also extremely
39:51 well optimized and we're able to run into high detail settings even on low-end Hardware so so that's a thing as
39:56 well so mantle to me is such a mixed bag
39:59 because there's going to be engines where even with mantle implemented you're still going to have tearing and
40:04 lagginess all over the place whereas
40:07 with gsync maybe you don't get the FPS
40:11 that you do with mantle but man does it ever look smoother you know I I see some
40:16 people in the in the chat commenting like GNC would be great for mid-range
40:21 but not for the highend or does gsync even matter with 144 Hertz monitors and
40:26 I it they're they're fundamentally kind of missing the point of what gsync does
40:31 right so it's not a replacement I mean it's a replacement for vsync completely
40:35 on or off and so even for an argument
40:39 that I see on our comment threads a lot is well if you have like a GTX 780 it
40:43 doesn't even matter if you have gsync right and it's not if you have a monitor
40:46 limited to 60 HZ but if you have like the ASUS panel that was demoed on it
40:51 will run at 144 Herz well now you can run anywhere from 30 to 144 frames per
40:57 second without any visual tearing and
41:01 you don't lose any graph any graphical Fidelity you can turn things up a whole
41:05 bunch whereas you know before you would have to worry about well if this one
41:09 scene or this one part of this mult multiplayer map draws my frame rate
41:13 below 120 120 hertz to 60
41:16 HZ now you don't have to worry about that right and so you know at the NVIDIA
41:21 event we don't have to get into it again those developers you know carac who
41:25 doesn't really work at it anymore but carac and Anderson and Sweeney kind of
41:28 got up there and said this is perfect for us because it it prevents us from
41:33 worrying about these really specific edge cases and I think that mean that
41:37 should mean a lot to Gamers even if it doesn't yet like they don't understand
41:40 it until they see it yeah that's uh it's
41:43 one of those things where I think a lot of the new technologies coming are going
41:46 to suffer from the same problem whether it's g-sync or Oculus um or uh uh motion
41:53 inputs uh even I mean even something like the new connect from from Microsoft
41:58 with the new Xbox One where they can show people using it and we're going to
42:01 see that same stupid commercial that we've been watching since the Nintendo
42:05 Wii launched of families having fun and dancing around in front of their TVs but
42:11 beyond that how do you actually get people to understand these Technologies
42:15 unless you can put them put it on their head or put it in front of their face
42:19 it's tough like 3D was the first time that that really came to you know to the
42:24 Forefront for me was like you can't show off 3D Vision and how cool it looks or
42:29 how cool it doesn't look over video or
42:32 on text or you know me sitting here talking to people watching a live stream
42:37 right you gota you got to go see it in person and g-sync is the same way yeah
42:41 you know we had Tom Peterson out here doing a video with us and we had two of
42:45 those g-sync monitors and we for like
42:48 four hours in the middle of the night tried to figure out a way to show video
42:53 of these panels that actually made them look good instead of bad things like a
42:59 60z capture camera can't show what it
43:02 does we need is like a variable we need
43:05 we well we need a capture card with a g-sync module in order to show it I mean
43:10 I how much would I love it what if you had one of those how much would I love
43:14 it if NVIDIA produced to go along with
43:18 their whole uh FCAT initiative if NVIDIA
43:21 produced a capture card that helped us
43:25 benchmark cat H that's an interesting
43:28 thought or what if a capture card vendor
43:32 that was kind of already working on DisplayPort stuff started to integrate
43:35 some of these things so that we could capture variable frame rate technology
43:39 that's an interesting thought lus wouldn't that be cool then then people
43:44 could actually sit and watch it and understand the difference well no it
43:49 still wouldn't help them right because we could make variable frame rate videos
43:53 and then what do they play it back on hold on a second unless they could just
43:56 a sec we could at least show the tearing
44:00 being eliminated so if nothing else we
44:04 could at least capture tearing versus non- tearing how do how do you display a
44:08 42 frames per second section of a video on a 60 HZ refresh prate
44:14 panel yeah it's tough like it's got to
44:18 be end to end right so you could you could have a you could record it and
44:23 capture it you could measure performance on it and then I could present fancy
44:27 graphs to you yes but unless you have a variable refresh monitor on your desk
44:33 that also has a variable refresh capable video player to read these files then
44:39 it's not going to work you know I had thought about it as far as hey this
44:42 would be a great tool for us because the way that capture cards are implemented
44:46 now is expensive and not even going to be useful for much longer because uh
44:51 g-sync is going to completely turn everything on its head in terms of how
44:54 you can actually capture an output from a graphics card um and then I hadn't
45:00 actually gone as far as you know okay could we use it to to present it to
45:03 other people but no you're absolutely right it wouldn't work at all so keep in
45:07 mind that the the the capture based
45:11 stuff or even fraps or whatever method you use even though if you turn vsync
45:17 off and measure performance that way you'll still see the performance that
45:22 you would see on a g-sync monitor so if
45:26 I'm running 122 frames per second or
45:29 something like that and I'm on a if I had gsync monitor that can capture that
45:32 or present that rather then I will see 122 frames per second in that instance
45:37 so you know you you'll still be able to measure performance with you know either
45:42 FCAT capture fraps and but you won't be
45:46 able to show the kind of experience you get on these different panels so it's
45:51 NVIDIA has a has a tough job ahead of them to you know go go to any gaming
45:56 show any land party and I bet you they'll have two dozen g-sync monitors
46:00 sitting there for people to walk up and try and and and and try to get the word
46:03 out about it even then it's a drop in the bucket I mean you look at how NVIDIA
46:07 has marketed something like Shield uh we have a new intern here that uh we were
46:11 we were covering the MGA power are you familiar with MGA power uh I don't think
46:16 I am okay so they're little Bluetooth controllers that have a mount on them
46:20 that's actually quite quite ingenious so that you can put your phone on it and
46:23 you can use it to play games and then it also has a power bank in it so you can
46:26 power your phone at the same time to extend your battery life so it's like uh
46:30 it's like Shield light and then when you factor that in with that someone has uh
46:35 someone has got NVIDIA game stream working with a custom uh with a custom
46:39 Android hack um it's it's actually it's
46:42 kind of compelling okay so he we were
46:45 talking about it and I was talking about like sort of the quality of the
46:49 controller and the you know the overall experience and I showed him an NVIDIA
46:53 shield and he's like oh wait I can do what with that thing oh that's cool I
46:57 mean he's a mainstream guy and NVIDIA hasn't figured out that they have to
47:01 actually spend money on actually
47:05 reaching more people than the 200 people who are at any given land party because
47:10 it's just I mean the amount of money it cost them to do something in a land
47:14 party versus if they set up a kiosk I don't know in a frakin mall or something
47:19 is is just they're reaching the wrong people they're reaching the people who
47:22 are actually likely to be watching this show listening to you and me talk about
47:25 how amazing it is and probably at least have some ankling of how great it is
47:29 whereas they need to reach the mainstream people and they just don't get it I agree I agree it's
47:35 tough yeah I guess that was pretty much all there is to say about that um so
47:39 let's move on to some Twitter questions here Brad culio asks is g-sync only
47:43 NVIDIA and I guess an extension of this is is mantle only
47:48 AMD yes and yes I guess for now for now
47:52 so g-sync was invented by NVIDIA they have patents on it and the module that
47:57 gets installed in these monitors is built by NVIDIA currently so um they
48:01 said some fancy words like hey we'll we'll consider the licensing model but
48:05 if you know NVIDIA no it's not going to happen they're not going to allow this
48:09 to work with AMD graphics cards if AMD wants a g-sync like technology they're
48:13 going to have to work on one on their own or partner with uh monitor vendors
48:18 mantle on the other hand AMD or AMD in
48:22 the past has a more open approach to their Technologies usually because to be
48:28 quite fair about it they don't have as they don't invest as much resource
48:34 financially or personnel-wise to invent these Technologies like NVIDIA does and
48:38 they kind of hope that the community and uh the industry kind of comes to these
48:42 standards you can look at physics acceleration you at 3D implementations
48:46 on monitors and and and I think they'll try to do the same thing with gsync but
48:51 mantle could be supported by NVIDIA but
48:55 think more for Pride issues than anything else that NVIDIA will likely
48:59 not implement it I mean uh you know just based on the story history between those
49:04 two companies that was my next question is is there any is there any possibility
49:08 in your mind that NVIDIA will adopt
49:12 mantle no I would say the the best case
49:17 scenario is Microsoft pays attention
49:21 gets off his ass and fixes directex to
49:24 to be more mantle like and they create
49:27 like a new API that is maybe maybe it's backed by Kronos instead of uh Microsoft
49:33 and now both of them will support that but it's maybe maybe as a wink wink
49:38 nudge nudge as it's it's actually just mantle but now it's renamed it's not an
49:42 AMD technology that seems much much more
49:46 likely that's a possibility I had not actually considered very uh very
49:49 interesting good point all right our next question is um when do you think
49:53 ddr4 is coming and what are your thoughts on
49:57 ddr4 uh ddr4 will be in the next
50:02 Enterprise platform I guess uh what are
50:05 it Haswell E I think will have ddr4 you know I've been through a lot of
50:10 these DDR transitions I don't expect a whole lot um the CPUs don't take
50:16 advantage of memory bandwidth improvements like gpus do and
50:21 especially it's happened every instance DDR when it launched was slower than the
50:25 top end SD RAM ddr2 was slower than DDR
50:28 DDR3 was slower than ddr2 and I expect
50:31 ddr4 will be slower than the top end DDR3 memory when it launches so it will
50:36 take a little while for it to kind of catch on and adopt but I don't it's not
50:40 going to solve any major bandwidth issues that the uh the processor has
50:44 maybe to improve integrated graphics performance right so that would be a big
50:48 plus yep I mean I guess the uh the the
50:51 the three things guys are higher latencies higher bandwidth lower power
50:56 consumption yay oh higher frequencies so four
50:59 things so it's more of the
51:04 same uh okay think uh that already does
51:07 exist just got an SSD for my system best upgrade yet yes you're absolutely right
51:11 Liam it absolutely is uh here's here's an interesting question why don't we
51:15 make this our last one here Travis asks what is in your personal rig
51:21 Ryan okay so that's an interesting question um because I have I guess I
51:26 have two right so I've got the one at the office that I would say I spend the
51:30 most time on but I do the least gaming
51:33 on um my system at home that was was the
51:38 primary gaming PC for a while was it's a uh
51:42 3770k with probably 16 gigs of RAM in it I don't remember which one it is now and
51:46 it had a GTX 580 in it so it's not even
51:50 that new but people always give me crap
51:53 for this cuz I don't like my my my primary PC you know what I do on it I
51:58 write articles and make graphs uh the
52:01 benefit of doing what I do is that literally as I sit here talking to you I
52:05 can look at three computers that have uh an r9290 a GTX 780 and a 780 Ti in it
52:12 and I can just go to any of those anytime I want a game and thanks to Cloud saves it all kind of works
52:17 magically yeah um but that's that's kind
52:21 of my copout answer I guess fair enough all right well thank
52:26 you so much for joining us and okay I'm going to say this again I promise next
52:31 time next time there will be no technical difficulties is it Me Maybe is am I
52:36 causing this I don't want to be I don't want to be your bad luck Omen here I
52:40 really think that it is actually you it's it's the ginger Factor so oh god um
52:45 his laser eyes shot all the way over here in you can you can feel it coming
52:50 through the internet wires I feel it yeah through the tubes all right thank
52:53 you so much Ryan we'll talk to you soon and hopefully I'll see you at some kind
52:57 of an upcoming event when someone invites us all somewhere nice there'll
53:01 be I hope I don't have to go anywhere until CES so I'll see you then I'll see
53:06 you there yeah okay that sounds good all right take care all right thanks
53:09 guys all right well that wasn't too painful oh God it kind of was oh you had
53:15 to hold the connector in place the whole time and I had to like my Knuckles are
53:19 white the whole time cuz I had to hold it so hard okay oh brilliant okay so now we have do we have to go back to how it
53:23 was we have to give me a
53:26 sec oh no what's happening oh no what's
53:32 happening okay just like murdered the mixer hopefully nothing actually
53:37 died is it on it's on it's on okay it's
53:40 on uh my my twitch chat's not updating anymore so I have no idea what's going
53:45 on all right I think they can still hear us so
53:49 let's uh let's keep on going here so this is oh no actually we have our
53:56 sponsor well you do that I got to go running apparently there's a note with
54:00 the cake that says information and instructions and more names and stuff
54:05 information and instructions or something okay I got a
54:11 whole bunch of different messages about more information about the I'm look at
54:16 it okay but it's probably all a lie I mean you know this right yeah
54:23 okay well cool so anyway guys our
54:27 sponsor today is squarespace.com Squarespace is the easy way to create
54:32 your very own website they handle the hosting for you they handle all of the
54:36 design and setup you just basically have to kind of put in images and skin
54:41 whatever template that you do decide to go with they have over 20 templates
54:45 including I'm just actually going to switch over to my screen right here they
54:48 have a new blog template that is Galapagos all of their templates are
54:53 fully optimized for PC Mac mobile so
54:57 whether it's tablets or smartphones or whatever else the case may be and they
55:01 have ones that are optimized for different things so that was a new blog template they also have new they also
55:05 have templates for things like e-commerce or portfolios or things like
55:10 that um they have extremely flexible pricing plans with respect to the
55:14 hosting so it's all Dynamic so guys linusmediagroup tocom which is our
55:18 company website not the Linus Tech tips Forum but uh like our more official
55:24 company website is hosted on Squarespace and before we were using hold on I'm
55:28 actually going to try and load it up here but I hate this keyboard um so
55:32 before we were actually using a WordPress blog and now that we've switched over to it it it was super easy
55:37 to set up so you can either just use their uh build tools or you can instead
55:42 decide to Tinker around in the HTML and CSS and whatever else you want and it
55:47 looks like probably everyone's hitting it right now cuz it's a little bit on
55:51 the slow side but no matter how hard we've hit it during our streams it never
55:55 goes down and it does eventually load so we're just going to go ahead and try to
55:58 refresh that because that's one of the things that they do do is they ensure
56:02 that your site doesn't go down because they have like a flexible sort of
56:05 bandwidth option so w wow this is
56:09 actually the first time that it's ever not worked incredibly well and gone
56:12 incredibly quickly I guess all 4,000 of you are probably hitting it right
56:17 now oh no I think it actually has to do with the internet connection on this PC
56:22 because I'm not even able to Twitch chat isn't even updating so all right well I
56:26 tried to show off our site but at any rate squarespace.com if you head over to
56:29 squarespace.com and use offer code linus1 you can save 10% on your new site
56:35 so you free trials are free you can set it up and try it out for two weeks
56:40 speaking of free trials we actually had a contest and we'll be announcing the
56:43 winner at the end of the stream here where we had people design their own
56:46 Squarespace site and then tweet us with a hashtag in order to have a chance to
56:50 win their site for a year so that's pretty cool and I'm not sure what what's
56:55 going on here but I'm going to try disconnecting from the phone and then reconnecting so that hopefully I will be
56:59 able to pull up some articles here so we can actually continue this continue this
57:04 Stream So what's our next
57:08 topic welcome back I was totally reading
57:11 something else let's go with the videogamer.com article about the
57:16 Assassin's Creed producer saying that PC
57:20 optimization quote unquote oh hey I'm reted to the phone I think the problem
57:24 was I wasn't thing I'm sorry yeah I read the whole thing okay um okay
57:29 so update Ubisoft has provided clarification on the comments made so
57:33 the original allegation was that a Ubisoft staffer basically up and said
57:38 nope the game's just not real optimized for PC and we don't care but but that
57:43 was not actually what they meant what they meant is that in the development
57:48 process they use the PC as an experimental platform to test things so
57:54 so they don't they don't test the performance immediately they test all the Technologies immediately and test
57:58 the performance later so if we add a bajillion particles every time a Canon
58:03 fires let's like let's try that and then if it doesn't perform well enough okay
58:07 we'll just throw a couple more graphics cards in there let's see what it looks like when it's rendered in real time so
58:12 they use the PC to experiment and then they optimize down from there which is a
58:17 100% acceptable way to use the PC as a gaming platform so once again The Gaming
58:22 Community takes something out of context and blows it out proportion um on the
58:26 other hand I mean compared to you know how it looks on the consoles our lower
58:31 end PC really didn't run Assassin Creed 4 that well so compared to Battlefield 4
58:35 where we were able to achieve similar image quality with an entry-level PC and
58:39 the and the two consoles I I would make the argument that Assassin's Creed 4 is
58:43 not as well PC optimized so there's also
58:47 that yeah and and throwing that up there a little bit off topic from that um is
58:52 that if you read the wording of the original report it does kind of sound
58:55 like that because he doesn't really specify at which time yep so it like it
59:00 could be how the question was phrased or whatever but you do have a point but at
59:04 the same time like we couldn't make it look better or perform better but it's
59:07 not that much worse either no it's not that much worse but we'll let you guys
59:11 be the judge of that because we'll be uploading the footage later on so here
59:14 was an article posted on the Forum by E chondo this the original article is from
59:19 The Verge it's extremely long though so uh ich chondo conveniently gave us the
59:24 highlight so basically the copyright Lobby has been asking
59:29 for a curriculum to be added in California to teach elementary schoolers
59:33 the value of copyright and dangers of piracy it's called be a Creator respect
59:39 the person give credit it's great to create and copyright matters teachers
59:42 are instructed to tell the class you're not old enough yet to be selling your
59:46 pictures online but pretty soon you will be and you'll appreciate if the rest of
59:51 us respect your work by not copying it and doing whatever we want with it
59:56 the committee presented the curriculum in September for pilot testing in the
59:59 current school year but as you might expect teachers associations are skeptical saying the modern curriculum
60:03 is already full to bursting without the addition of copyright
60:07 awareness couldn't have put it better myself don't copy that floppy yeah don't
60:11 copy that floppy this video is amazing and uh conveniently it has been
60:16 downloaded and then re-uploaded to YouTube so we can all enjoy
60:20 it so guys if you haven't seen don't copy that floppy you should probably
60:23 check it out I didn't realized when I first clicked on it I hadn't seen it before that it's over 9 minutes long
60:29 yeah and it's like this terrible '90s rap no it's great it's terrible it's
60:34 great it's terrible you don't understand the '90s if you think it's terrible no no I no I mean I know that I know that
60:39 it's awesome but it's terrible but it's awesome it's hard to watch it's awesome
60:44 whatever um moving on to our next topic
60:48 also related to the
60:51 MPAA so here's another one security
60:55 at theat so the npaa wants Advanced anti-piracy measures at movie theaters
60:59 like night vision goggles movie theaters aren't already making not enough money
61:03 yeah so so they so there they should be equipping their staff with night vision
61:06 goggles so they have updated their anti-piracy guidelines for movie
61:10 theaters to basically um do a couple of things so number one is they're offering
61:14 a $500 bounty to movie theater employees
61:17 who are able to catch people pirating which honestly like if if oh man I guess
61:23 the person would have to be taken into custody so there'd be no incentive for
61:27 people to like team up make it like a and like try to collect $500 bounties
61:31 what if you got someone that was underage though yeah oh I wonder so you
61:36 get like get all your siblings and like catch them all copying movies and like
61:40 cuz if they're underage they can't go to jail anyway it won't stay on their
61:43 record so there's that um some pre-release screenings and premieres
61:47 have employees often equipped with night vision goggles and instructed to closely
61:51 monitor movie goers in some cases members of the public are as has to hand
61:54 over all recording capable devices including phones and Candy not that
61:58 candy can record but just because you might be able to like conceal a camera
62:02 within a bag of candy I suppose I mean or or because they're trying to sell it
62:05 in the concessions my biggest thing is that they can search you yeah so they
62:09 can search you now um which is like what
62:12 prohibiting the use of equipment that can record audio video or even take
62:15 photographs I mean how extreme is this does anyone actually watch
62:20 cams like okay seriously I actually
62:23 never have okay shyness shyness okay out
62:27 to all you viewers guys hit us up on Twitch chat or tweet us with this do you
62:32 okay you don't have to admit you're a pirate okay but what you can say is I
62:36 would watch a cam some you've probably encountered a cam you know rip at some
62:42 point or another they're terrible they're just terrible like I I was I was
62:48 somewhere someone was watching a cam not that long ago and within about 5 seconds
62:53 I was like this is unwatch why why would you even watch the movie like this I'll
62:56 wait like I'll wait and I'll watch it in a like just I can't watch it in the
63:00 theater because it's like $ each and I
63:03 have a baby and it's hard to get out doesn't mean that I'm going to watch it
63:06 like this yeah and like I'm usually only
63:09 going to watch a movie Once usually there are some movies that I've watched
63:12 like Serenity I've watched 10 bajillion times Firefly I've watched 10 bajillion
63:16 times but I'm usually only going to watch something once so if I'm going to watch it I'm not going to watch a caming
63:20 I'll just wait and watch it later cuz it's going to be way better in way sound
63:26 too oh my God sound on cams is terrible
63:30 practically worthless terrible someone says uh some something
63:36 about cam girls okay that makes sense okay well that a cam would be would be
63:40 more appropriate because I'm not expecting the Blu-ray of like you know
63:44 um Angie flirts a lot or whatever her name would be on the other end of a cam
63:49 show to I think we've gotten derailed a little bit here um
63:55 okay so it seems like yeah it seems like there's a fair bit of yeah well I'll
63:58 I'll wait for Blu-ray or I'll or I'll rent or I'll wait for Netflix or some
64:03 kind of reasonable quality that isn't
64:06 terrible I mean to me honestly the video quality isn't even a big deal uh to me
64:10 the one that bothers me is the sound quality the audio is always terrible if I just can't hear a bloody thing
64:13 anyone's saying then what's the point yeah all right so let's talk about the
64:16 topic that uh unfortunately I would have I thought you and Ryan Ryan's going to
64:21 have some interesting thoughts on this once he once he looks into it but this
64:24 is actually fairly recent news um LSI is
64:28 talking about their new generation controller so it's going to have
64:32 sandforce branding it's sandforce 3700 series I actually reached out to ad data
64:37 already and I'm like hey um are you are you guys going to have this and they're
64:42 like hey yeah don't worry about it soon
64:45 I'm like yes so uh what this is going to do is it's going to build on the same
64:50 technology that we've had for really an awfully long time with San Force to
64:55 which uh is their ability to compress and decompress data on the Fly this has
64:59 a couple of effects it improves perceived performance well Real
65:02 Performance really and number two is it actually makes your SSD last longer
65:06 because you're committing less data to flash so the the less you write to your
65:10 SSD the longer it will live um and at the time when it was launched it was it
65:14 was revolutionary because it also was able to take slow Nan Flash and squeeze
65:19 unheard of performance out of it well now we are past the point where the
65:23 flash it self is actually the bottleneck and we are on to the point where SATA 36
65:27 gbit per second has become the bigger bottleneck well this this my friends is
65:32 how sandforce 3 as I'll be calling it is going to address that because it
65:36 features both a SATA 3 interface and a
65:40 native PCI Express interface on the same
65:44 chip so instead of having cluggy Bridge chip Solutions and like like like sort
65:50 sort of we'd have like PCI Express to SATA Bridge chips and then those running
65:54 to raid controllers and then those running to what are essentially a bunch
65:57 of normal ssds laid out on a PCB with
66:01 SATA wires running through the PCB I mean that's what they were that's what
66:04 products like Revo Drive were we're going to be looking at instead a
66:08 controller that can actually address a massive amount of Flash in a highly
66:12 parallelized fashion over a much much
66:16 faster bus I mean even if I recall correctly PCIe Gen 2 1X is 500 megabytes
66:23 per second so I believe PCI E 31x would be 1 gab
66:28 per second can you look that up so that I'm not quoting the wrong numbers here
66:32 it might be 500 for Gen 3 but uh maybe
66:35 someone in twitch chat wants to correct me I'm talking out of the uh I'm talking
66:39 out of my butt here I'm having internet issues okay well at any rate okay so
66:44 basically it's much much faster than SATA 3 is capable of being and you'll be
66:48 able to plug that directly into a PCI Express slot so there's going to be a
66:51 variety of different flavors of it intended for entry level we're actually
66:54 going to go back to the uh the post on the Forum from digital nav so there's
66:59 going to be entry level and that's going to be optimized for things like msata or
67:03 ngff sockets and then there's going to be mainstream client which is going to
67:07 be like more advanced mini PCIe type of
67:11 implementations then there's Enthusiast which is going to be 2 and 1/2 inch or
67:15 you know PCIe cards and that's going to support up to PCIe 4X and full power
67:21 fail um protection so that's really cool and then all the way up to Enterprise
67:25 Products so this is extremely exciting because it's been quite a while since
67:29 we've been seen significant innovation in SSD performance I mean we've been
67:33 limited by SATA for quite some time now I mean Samsung's done some cool stuff
67:37 with things like their RAM caching yeah but we've we've we've had like you kind
67:42 of just said we've had for a long time a new SSD comes out and it's like oh it's
67:45 basically the same as the last one okay and then people just kind of like
67:49 stopped releasing new ssds for a while there it was like every few weeks so oh
67:54 there's another one oh there's another one but then yeah yeah that went on for
67:57 a long time I mean that wasn't that wasn't bound to be sustainable anyway we
68:01 all we all should have known that yeah my internet's down again too so is is
68:05 yours back up mine is like semi up I'm trying to find here it is right there
68:09 right there I need I need gen three okay PCI Express 3 blah blah blah blah blah
68:15 blah yep oh I was right awesome8 GT bit rate so about 1 Gigabyte
68:20 per second for for a 1x link so if you have a 4X link we're talking 4 G btes
68:25 per second monstrous all right so we're
68:28 about to have our best EA moment I love
68:32 this in probably months um this makes me
68:35 I don't know why but it makes me more happy than it makes me angry really this
68:40 makes you happy I I just so Need for Speed Rivals is locked at 30 frames per
68:45 second on the PC this was posted by pmit g whatever
68:51 you pronounce that um really EA like
68:55 really the best one the best one is when he brings it Beyond 60 FPS okay so hold
69:01 on hold so there's a total there's a total biscuit video about this which is
69:06 which is amazing and um so beyond
69:10 limiting the game to 30 frames per second like like like I mean that that
69:14 is probably the worst carryover I've ever seen from a console Port this aside
69:18 from like like press start to continue where they don't even bother to like
69:22 rename anything change the word to enter I mean this is terrible so get this if
69:28 you hack the config files and manage to get it running at 60 FPS the game runs
69:32 twice as fast it's a commit it's yeah it's not hack the game okay I'm using it
69:37 colloquially okay I haven't seen that since like
69:41 Commander Keen okay seriously he got it he he got it
69:47 faster than two times as fast too I I don't think he actually got it to 120
69:51 FPS but he got it pretty high and it's just hilarious and the rest of the game
69:54 doesn't run as fast as you do either so if you do this you're like way faster
69:59 than all the other cars that you're supposed to be chasing but you can't control yourself
70:04 because you're going so quickly so you just kind of like smash into
70:09 everything it's hilarious EA is basically programming for
70:14 Doss this yeah like are they not
70:17 familiar with the with the timer that's built into Windows to prevent this I
70:23 just I gave up um with Need for Speed once they once like the original crew
70:27 that was making Need for Speed left because I feel like it lost all of its
70:31 like it doesn't feel like the same game anymore um and ever since then like just
70:36 all the bad seems to be coming from it and that just that wreaks of all the
70:41 bad like why ridiculous anyways let's move on to
70:46 this topic okay so um PlayStation 4
70:49 they're all defective they all have dead HDMI ports or something once again once
70:53 again people overreacting a little bit but check this out this is actually kind
70:58 of uh here we go I mean it seems like no
71:02 console launch can exist without uh
71:05 without some kind of you know epic Hardware failure so here's a here's a
71:15 Vine oh no yeah okay so basically Xbox
71:19 Xbox Ones are are scratching discs that's a new thing there's actually a
71:23 huge warning right on the front of it that says don't move the console while
71:27 you know anything's going on then there's a there's a fair number of posts
71:31 what I suspect so okay so Microsoft staff we're terribly sorry for the
71:34 problems with the disc drive to make up for that we'll be replacing the games so
71:38 you can buy them digitally we'll be doing this we'll doing that I'm pretty sure that's not actually a real thing um
71:43 pretty sure he just wrote that oh Sor don't quote that as Microsoft no not
71:47 quot not not quoting that so I mean
71:50 we've seen all this before Xbox 360 and that's what that's what they did with
71:54 Xbox 360 is they just they dealt with the games so we'll see probably
71:59 something similar I really don't think it's the end of the world this quote if you read the whole thing goes on to to
72:04 make fun of physical media which shouldn't exist anymore but uh whatever
72:09 man I don't actually necessarily care about the disc I just kind of want the
72:14 Box well then you can just 3D print a box but then it's not as good so we'll
72:18 come full circle box yeah we'll come full circle to physical media being
72:22 irrelevant and then relevant again I'm
72:26 cool with that you just make you just make your own digital download and then
72:30 make your own one anyway you can digital download the game which is literally
72:33 digitally downloading the 3D printable game yeah you can digital download board
72:37 games yeah exactly there you go that'll
72:40 be a thing and someone's like these are 40 gig games it's like
72:45 okay that's a thing that's why that might be coming back around again
72:49 actually people might need discs again because it'll take too damn long to
72:52 download games okay that's internet infrastructure isn't
72:56 going as fast as it should be okay but on the other hand it's not like steam hasn't figured this out pre-download be
73:02 ready to play when it launches yeah but games are still getting bigger people
73:05 were pre- downloading Cod and just being like what I can't even figure out why
73:09 cod's so big because they're lying I swear to God they were lying about their
73:13 RAM they probably have just gigantic empty files like seriously so I think
73:18 someone's going to find all the ginormous files that claim to be
73:21 textures and aren't yeah because like it's I wouldn't be surprised at all
73:25 because like the six gab thing was complete crap okay or there's going to
73:29 be like 25 gigs of DLC that turns out to
73:32 be like he's already in several several million skins for the
73:36 dog that's what it'll be dog armor any
73:40 type of dog and then any type of mixed breed
73:43 dog and then any color of all of those things goldplated dog yeah goldplated
73:48 dog 300 300 head shots get a goldplated
73:51 dog I'm I'm clearly having a bit of a rough day here so I don't know how much
73:55 longer we're going to keep going but this is extremely exciting so here is a
74:01 o go away wow much gold plate okay thank
74:04 you for the ad okay there we
74:08 go can't say that man so posted by C
74:13 Gutman on XDA Developers this is the
74:17 GitHub project and it is very very cool
74:20 so with Qualcomm s so's as well as with Tegra 4S although I can't think of many
74:25 Tegra 4 devices where this would be relevant because so far they're all made
74:28 by NVIDIA and support gamestream anyway but there are five updates now on a
74:32 project that has additional controller
74:36 support so you're not going to be limited to just the uh the controller
74:39 built into the Shield or you know whatever controllers happen to be
74:43 compatible with that particular device so MOA Pro PS3 Xbox and shield
74:48 controllers are working with it um we are going to have gam stream to your
74:52 mobile device now there's still some restrictions so you're still going to
74:55 need a good Wireless implementation so if you have something like an S4 with AC
74:59 Wireless or or an HTC1 with AC Wireless
75:02 that's going to work well and they are they're able to add multi-threaded h264
75:08 decoding to the point where as long as you have something that's reasonably high performance so tgra 3 is working
75:13 okay but not well enough you are going to be able to use NVIDIA game
75:17 stream that's actually pretty freaking cool which is amazing so you can get a
75:22 demo of the in progress APK and then uh so we've had success
75:27 with uh low h264 decoding latency on
75:30 Snapdragon S4 Pro 600 devices like the Nexus 7 and
75:35 HTC1 um no we just need everything to have HDMI out yeah like that's awesome
75:41 Isn't that cool I I had briefly read over this I didn't really yeah that's
75:45 because I want my phone to be able to do that that was my whole thing I believe I
75:49 already brought this up with you so as much as I don't think Shield is the
75:53 future I think streaming technology is the future and this actually ties in
75:58 very closely to I really hope I posted this in the
76:04 dock because I don't see it right now uh steam's uh steam's group where you'll be
76:09 able to try their game streaming feature
76:13 I don't think so steam streaming stream
76:16 streaming stream steaming your stream
76:19 will be clean that should be a thing stream
76:24 steaming that should be a that should be a group of guys on Twitch should be
76:28 stream stream Steamers twitch should
76:31 have stream Steamers and they should go around to different twitch channels and
76:34 like clean out all the spam so guys check this out steam inhome streaming is
76:39 a way for people with a good home network to seamlessly play their Steam
76:43 games between two computers anywhere in the house the feature will be available
76:47 for early feedback in an upcoming beta test and beta participants will be
76:50 randomly selected for members of this group so join
76:53 go join this group so you can try it out because it sounds absolutely amazing
76:58 they have a Q&A on the page but it looks like one of the things that had me most
77:03 excited about Steam OS is actually just going to be a thing that valve's going
77:07 to be trying to bring to their platform in general how freaking exciting is that
77:14 because there is no reason why a gigabit Ethernet connection couldn't handle
77:18 1080p streaming which means that unless you have a 4K TV which you don't
77:24 well I I really don't think anyone watching has a 4K TV someone is probably
77:28 going to say they do just to troll you and then there's going to be the one dude that actually does and he's going
77:33 to try and say it everyone's going to assume he's trolling to tell them that he doesn't see there so there's no way
77:38 seven people that already said they do there's no way that I can be wrong so
77:41 anyway you can you'll be able to stream 1080p from your powerful game I mean
77:45 this is what I wanted personal cloud to me is the future I mean being able to
77:51 build your own cloud storage your own gaming your own cloud ah so cool and I
77:57 was we were worried about it like okay I don't know if you were necessarily
78:00 worried about it I was kind of the whole Cloud thing being I've pretty much had a
78:03 hard phone on it from like day one yeah yeah did I say hard phone you definitely
78:07 said hard phone I'm hard phone on it I mean what does that even
78:10 mean I am so tired that's why I disagreed with you cuz I was like
78:15 whatever that is it's awesome so
78:19 sure but yeah I I wanted private Cloud forever and I was worried because
78:23 everything was going external Cloud but then the NSA came out was all jerks and
78:26 then everyone's like oh private Cloud I'm like yay I wanted that anyway so
78:30 that works for me what are you going to hard phone next I think I'm just done
78:34 here thank you guys very much for watching The W show today um and putting
78:40 up with the technical difficulties that we went through as usual I'm sorry that
78:44 I couldn't be a little bit more together today but we it's it has been an
78:48 extremely trying week yeah actually we had a shoot on Monday that was that was
78:52 an on location shoot and then on Tuesday I don't even know what happened
78:57 Tuesday Tuesday I was catching up last week was a short week due to Remembrance
79:01 Day short weeks kind of demolish us so I mean we didn't have enough time to get
79:05 everything done in the first place um oh oh Chris has Hangouts uh slick will do
79:10 Hangouts I'm just going to leave after I do my apology for being terrible at
79:13 streaming um no no Chris says see Chris
79:18 says build blogs on Hangouts Okay okay
79:21 we got it hard phone is that a hard phone I mean Wednesday Wednesday I don't
79:27 know what happened I think I filmed things and then yesterday I oh I spent
79:32 most of Wednesday and Thursday trying to get HDMI capture working and then I'm
79:36 going to spend most of tonight editing a video and then I'm flying out tonight or
79:40 this morning I still have to do Xbox one yeah which has been creepily watching us
79:44 this whole time the red lights really throw me off yeah it actually is like
79:48 the three like dark dim deep red lights
79:51 that are in the middle of the connect are just creepy it's good thing it's not
79:55 two if you it's like two and then one underneath but if you drag down it's a
79:59 Diablo symbol Dia 3 like if you were
80:03 able to yeah I think I'm done
80:07 here use this for what oh did I does it
80:11 even have office on it I don't know but I have HDMI on this laptop oh well will
80:16 it work probably let's find out shall we
80:19 anything let's have some more technical difficulties on this stream bring on the
80:23 technical difficulties all the technical difficulties guys maybe next week maybe
80:28 next week we should do our campaign where we ask for money to buy equipment
80:31 that will allow us to not have to deal with this all the time maybe next week
80:34 we can not be putting the whole set together 5 minutes before the show uh
80:39 was it five well I don't know maybe I'd like to hear what these guys think in
80:42 twitch chat would you guys rather we bring you the image quality comparison
80:47 right away oh the giveaway oh I still need to uh yeah everyone is asking about
80:51 this thing I while you do while you do build um I'll I'll figure that
80:55 out hey it works no problem at all
80:59 hooray okay um yeah are do you are you guys
81:06 happy that we had sort of technical difficulties with the stream but we're
81:09 going to bring you our image quality comparison right away or would you have rather waited for
81:14 that someone says do the image quality comparison now do it now I don't know
81:20 where I'm supposed to get this get in the chopper
81:23 probably that
81:27 thing so people are happy they'd rather
81:31 that we have a terrible terrible show so okay the cake I went down okay so what's
81:36 going on with the cake maybe I'll eat some C I looked on the cake I looked at the sides of the cake I looked under the
81:41 cake I didn't look in the cake cuz I was going to wait until you had an
81:44 opportunity there's no names there's
81:47 nothing I'm not sure I don't have any of the infos wait so we do or we don't know
81:52 who sent it we don't well I'm I know it was like Chris and that group of guys
81:57 like it was the mods and a few other guys but I don't know exactly who it
82:02 was all righty then I'm sure one of them can tell me and I don't like I think
82:06 it's like I don't know if it's for a reason more than the fact that it's a
82:10 fan which is a no fan which makes sense and is
82:13 awesome yeah I think it's awesome that might just be the extent of the reason
82:18 but like I don't know if there's I don't know I'm really not a
82:22 big fan of this this laptop the blooping
82:25 sound that's happening well I'm trying to mute it and like the function key
82:28 seems to just not do anything cuz it's just like oh well
82:31 pressing F7 does something apparently there was a
82:36 reason for what you're talking to me right now oh there's like a compell okay
82:40 well I'll go get that once I'm done finding my giveaway winner you should do
82:43 build logs of the week at some point here I'm trying you're trying are you
82:46 trying are you trying are you trying is this your new form of trolling
82:52 you just said say the same word over again I think the real question here is
82:55 am I trying but are you try like trying
82:59 patience heart phone are you hard phone hard phone I'm always hard
83:06 phone oh oh it's a birthday
83:11 cake apparently lonus Tech tips is five on the 28th
83:16 oh I was like okay I don't think it's anyone's birthday but that's cool ah
83:21 it's lonus Tech birthday I didn't even know it's funny because someone someone
83:27 tweeted me asking if I had anything special planned for like the fifth
83:30 anniversary of lonus tech tips I was like we're
83:36 five no I I don't even celebrate my own
83:39 birthday you can definitely tell me and him remember like anniversaries and
83:42 stuff no well I okay I remember them you put it in a calendar yeah yeah so you
83:47 don't remember it no so apparently it was from Dave St
83:52 strr mape dim ghost wher erino Glenn
83:56 ixie Jay Knight and fox that is awesome
83:59 thank you so much guys and don't let that yawn sound unappreciative I do
84:04 appreciate it very much I'm just extremely tired and yeah I was right
84:08 wher sent it that's awesome wher's the
84:11 Canadian one so he ends up having to actually send all the
84:17 things I might load up all these Squarespace sites and then just let uh
84:23 let uh everyone see them first before I go ahead and pick the winner so go ahead
84:27 and do build blogs I I still don't it has to it's I didn't do build logs this
84:32 week I didn't have any time how long does it take to download like seriously
84:37 a minute to download well we have other topics so you can find something to talk
84:40 about okay what exactly are you doing I'm
84:46 working okay I'm working on things okay give me
84:51 a second what other topics do we
84:54 have there's some quick fire topics I'm that's I'm looking Apple dictionary
84:59 definition of gay includes stupid
85:04 yep
85:08 what is that better or
85:11 worse that's very debatable isn't it I mean if they take out the part about um
85:19 like homosexual if they take that out and only leave in stupid well no because
85:24 you can have multiple definitions so for example the the f word not the not the
85:29 that one but the like that one the other one um you know like there's multiple
85:34 definitions so derogatory this bundle of sticks and twigs um I think there's at
85:40 least a couple other ones and it's actually used as like or was at some
85:44 point yeah but in certain areas of so like if you were to if you were to take
85:48 the word gay and you were to say you know um homosexual archaic or something
85:53 like that and you were to upate I wish they would do that though but the
85:57 problem is that I know gay people that say I'm gay and I'm like okay no not me
86:02 but like they are I just can't communicate right now I shouldn't even be trying to talk about something this
86:06 touchy but you know gay people that say you didn't quote I'm gay yes so so I
86:12 kind of look at like okay well if you use it that way we can't really we can't
86:16 just say well it doesn't mean that anymore I'm sorry your word is gone
86:20 that's true you have to make a new word yeah it'll have to be like puku or
86:24 something yeah puku would be a perfect word for it hello sir I am puku well I
86:29 don't think most people are I mean maybe in the future people can just you know
86:33 not have to worry about concealing their pess they we live in Canada pity I don't
86:39 think it's audity I don't think people have to hide their peity in Canada not
86:43 as much that's for sure I don't know anyone actually that hides it that is
86:47 whoa well how would you know anyone who yeah
86:51 see yeah but most my friends that are
86:54 puku are very open and happy about it is
86:58 no issue because are we starting something here I'm trying to start I
87:01 hope not no we shouldn't start this I didn't even why AR we starting this why
87:05 what is the spelling for puku puku well p o o k l okay yeah yeah yeah yeah
87:11 there's only one way to spell it well well because people are spelling it other ways in the chat no no they're
87:14 wrong so I thought we might as well give them the proper dictionary spelling of
87:18 puku do you know how the word quiz was came to be no someone bet someone else
87:23 that they could invent a word and um the
87:27 way that they achieved it was they hired a bunch of school boys to run around
87:31 town writing this word everywhere and it became a word people
87:36 started using it true story that's actually hilarious
87:41 so if we get all of the people watching
87:45 in the chat to go write this word all over for ex that I don't actually think
87:49 that the word puku is an appropriate one for what we're talking talking
87:56 about cuz it just sounds kind of stupid
87:59 so come with a better one well I I'm
88:02 tired I'm tired and cranky do you have build logs what are you do no I don't
88:06 what are you even doing I'm working what
88:10 is this are you working why does anyone even watch this
88:13 stream well technically we're after hours so are we is this after party
88:17 legally no legally no yeah exactly
88:24 whatever don't pretend you started work at 9:30 today I did did you earlier than
88:28 that actually cuz I know I know some days when I'm not year you kind of set
88:31 Flex hours some days you never show up on time
88:35 either just saying why do people watch this stream
88:39 well I know why they watch the real stream I don't know why they're watching what we're doing right now why are you
88:43 people watching what we're doing right now are we are we are we truly
88:46 entertaining or is our is our like married coupless just frustrating to
88:51 behold
88:54 well well I'm done now I believe that the well no screw you I'm going wow
89:01 that's how it's going to be the first one I don't think uh the name of the guy
89:07 would be super happy with pukis
89:11 pukis pity pity sorry sorry project pity
89:16 Pope Pope I thought the new pope doesn't care
89:21 I thought that's oh yeah he's like cool and stuff yeah okay never mind sorry so
89:26 this is a pretty boss computer you know how you get to change your name when you
89:29 become the pope what you can yeah I would totally be Pope cool I well I
89:34 think there's a list of names that you can pick from though like you know how
89:37 there's been a bunch of Pope Benedicts did you know there was a pope lonus at one point that's pretty cool
89:42 yeah maybe it's bound to happen
89:48 again this computer is actually pretty ridiculously Beast is that four p pumps
89:53 seriously does that look like four pumps to you I can't even see on your screen
89:57 what a terrible screen I hate it yeah my screen's really bad uh yes wow awesome
90:01 that's amazing that is Beast part of the problem is that lions and I have both
90:04 not seen this before that is kind of incredible I really like his runs
90:09 they're really straight and if you can see there's his yeah you might say he's
90:12 got mad runs he just water cooled
90:17 all he's got the runs he's got them in his
90:20 computer I
90:24 I I I got it you might even say his computer runs like really
90:32 well oh my God I'm sorry uh
90:39 P but this is probably there we go
90:42 there's some better shots of his actual mobo that's some pretty intense water
90:45 cooling all the things he's got going on wow yeah that's incredible what a great
90:50 build normally I don't like builds where people can't really seem to decide on a
90:54 uh on a color scheme it's pretty cool yeah I like it
91:00 yeah that worked out pretty well I think he's got I can't really tell I think he
91:04 might have two Loops he has to because of the color but
91:07 I don't see the rest of it that's the problem so I think some people with this
91:11 whole Squarespace website giveaway were um not taking it entirely
91:16 seriously no I'll show you later don't worry it's coming okay moving on big
91:22 Lilo with Obi-Wan Shinobi that's an amazing name oh my God that's an amazing
91:26 name yeah I know Obi-Wan Shinobi wow I love it that's so good um x58
91:34 board really oh it's clean huh I think
91:38 it's just an overall 750s older rig with uh you know an
91:43 update or whatever whatever it looks really
91:47 nice I love that res very clean I was so stoked with my T
91:54 Virus when I first got it you move the mouse around so they can see what you're looking at then that
91:59 helps love how your demonstration was just
92:03 like I couldn't see what I was doing smart
92:08 guy oh man yeah super
92:15 clean I like how he mounted his ssds I've wanted to do something interesting
92:19 with the mounting of my ssds for a little while because I've always just kind of hid them behind the motherboard
92:23 tray but like how he has it I like having them front facing and if you can
92:27 do it kind of stealthy like that it looks really cool there we go there's a
92:30 better shot of it so right here just cut
92:34 through right there and just push the cables through looks super
92:37 nice this looks like he had um hard pipe
92:41 and he bent it which is also really
92:45 cool I can't remember the tool that you have to use for that but it's pretty
92:49 awesome I think I I've seen this
92:53 one ah was it this guide or a different guy that they did the same kind of thing
92:56 and they actually showed the technique on our website so that's pretty
93:03 cool I don't know if I can decide some of these are actually surprisingly
93:08 good this one I think is just a template but yeah no no some some of them some of
93:13 them are actually surprisingly uh surprisingly good maybe do one more
93:17 topic while I continue to review the 290x birthday cake speaking about cake
93:23 with like fans and stuff this is a 290x
93:26 birthday cake yeah I know right that's
93:30 awesome it would have been even better if it had arrived right when we were talking about that yeah it well it would
93:36 have been pretty cool uh yeah never mind he shouldn't have named it he should
93:40 it's like he should have said like it's an AMD birthday cake and then he should have let everyone in the comments rage
93:44 about which card it
93:47 was you know they would cuz they all look the same
93:52 I don't know if it's long enough to be a 290x that might be a
93:58 270x okay I want to start a discussion someone should actually measure it
94:03 out and figure out if it's long enough I don't think we have enough for okay well
94:06 if we assumed that the PCI bracket is to scale it's accurate yeah you have to it
94:12 looks like there is one under there or they did an incredibly good job with it
94:16 to be honest cuz look at that oh no I
94:19 didn't mean the PCI I meant the PCI bracket oh but yeah we could go by oh yeah that
94:24 does look pretty good doesn't it your display is terrible I know I know can it
94:30 can you turn the brightness up oh well that'll help I can't even tell if that's
94:35 it looks real no no it's not the spacing is not
94:40 even I don't think it's real I just I couldn't tell if the spacing being not
94:44 even was a problem with the camera it's good but yeah all right can I have the
94:48 HDMI cable back yep all right so we had
94:51 a a win your Squarespace website contest
94:55 and um the idea was that I'm supposed to
94:58 pick the winner but some of these are actually surprisingly uh surprisingly
95:03 good before before you keep on going with that apparently our fly team is in
95:07 the 60th spot apparently we blasted through a million points which is pretty
95:10 aggressive so if you guys want to join up on a folding team ours is rising
95:14 really fast to jump right on there okay
95:18 yay Firefox have you noticed it's been incredibly unstable lately yeah I mov
95:21 back to Nightly and it's running better again that seems to be a consistent
95:25 thing like what the he like it's been crashing on me all over the place lately
95:29 yeah the pre-alpha is more stable than the release version it's weird like
95:32 brilliant I think it's flash problems it's like what were you guys actually
95:36 doing all this time I hate flash problems because every time I kill flash
95:39 it stops freezing okay but like no one else has
95:44 those problems I know I'm just saying no I'm not saying no one else has those
95:48 problems I'm obviously having problems I mean no other uh browser all right okay
95:54 so we had a few submissions actually I I hadn't had any until I tweeted out about
95:59 it being like hey yo dog uh we haven't had many submissions so you can still
96:03 have a pretty good chance to win up he that's my friend is it yeah oh I guess I
96:07 can't really vote on this oh like I I
96:11 went to school with him cool all right so this one well where
96:16 should we start come on Firefox you can do it I believe in you not a single yeah
96:22 loaded yet no is this Firefox or is this your tether oh it's probably the
96:27 tether oh come on win stream is
96:34 win yeah I know right okay so let's try a more different
96:42 network okay and then let's see if this one just is like magically working now I
96:47 don't think the wireless on this laptop's very good there we go think the
96:51 the laptop on this laptop well there's aspects of it that are good yes the
96:56 processor is good that is true made by Intel
97:01 yeah so what you're implying that there's not a whole lot to go wrong if
97:05 you put an what are you some kind of Intel fan boy oh since when has the
97:09 processor been a major problem in a laptop um unless it's like ancient or
97:16 way underpriced all right so John wer here this one's pretty rudimentary so I
97:21 don't think we're probably going to go with this one anyway sorry to friend
97:24 here okay so the problem seems to be that function lock is enabled that's why
97:30 it's doing unpredictable things so it just says don't panic and you can see
97:34 that uh he's using a template that has stuff here that you can switch between
97:41 so go ahead and click on that can can you go to code is that possible maybe is
97:45 it going to load well the issue is that I keep not being able to even like click
97:49 on things properly yeah I know I think our internet connection down again
97:52 brilliant so back to the
97:55 tether yes sweet I like I don't understand how the
98:01 wireless could be so like we weren't having issues with the wireless on this
98:04 before were we
98:09 no yeah I was going to ask you about
98:15 that I'll talk about it later okay oh
98:19 holy balls okay so I think you have to hold function to
98:25 get like F5 to do something or I could
98:28 just go up here and oh yeah cuz right well then the the Nexus takes a while to
98:33 like decide that are you worthy yeah are
98:37 you worthy of having the internet should I actually give you the benefit of my
98:41 wires I'm not sure how warm is it running not I am a
98:46 Nexus you know what though battery life while tethering is actually not that bad
98:50 people have been raging about the battery life but Brandon saying he's super happy with it I've reached the end
98:55 of the day with as much as 50% yeah which isn't as good as the Z1 but the Z1
99:00 had a whole other host of issues that I wasn't a huge fan of so this guy's
99:04 getting pretty old and I I'm sure seriously S3 is old now well with my
99:10 usage it's getting a little bit weathered I use it a lot um and for for
99:16 how long I've had it and how much I've used it and how much I've like full drained the battery and like bad things
99:21 um now that sanen Mod's on it does pretty good I can get to the end of like
99:26 I've used it a fair amount today and I'm at 73% like that kills what it used to
99:32 be right it used to be I wouldn't use it all day and I'd get to 4:00 and i' be
99:36 dead right so like I'm pretty stoked
99:39 actually I can easily get to the end of the day with a good amount of percentage
99:43 L yay touch whiz yeah I I like I miss
99:48 my probably
99:51 it's probably locked at a 30 FPS it's locked at 30 FPS if you if you unlock
99:57 your phone to 60 FPS it runs to as fast so yeah the network connection is so
100:02 slow can you email me all of these links and we can just open them on my laptop
100:07 that might for some reason I think this is working let's let's see is your still
100:10 is your Still rocking let's see Dash rocking the
100:19 internet
100:23 yeah that's better no you have to go well that's the thing is I've already like loaded everything up on here and
100:28 like entered all of the stupid captas in order to look at these sites that's a
100:32 really easy capture that's not going to stop anything I know I don't even know
100:35 why it's there but like it's actually dude it even loads better on
100:39 mine what oh wait what oh now I'm confused
100:47 what is what are they doing what are
100:50 what are they doing with this browser right now nightly pones man I can't go
100:58 to no I think it worked before I think code is dead though I don't think code
101:02 is a working link oh okay well at any rate that's not going to win so let's
101:06 move on to the next one this one might
101:10 win so this uh someone built a little like e-commerce website that presumably
101:15 sells farts so the Slick is
101:19 $300 the two is
101:22 $19.99 and rolling thunder is $39.99 so
101:26 that's a bit of an upgrade over the toot and finally the Rev head which is a
101:29 picture of an engine uh is $45 you can own your own if you click on
101:36 here and that is the same page okay I think they get marks off for that and
101:40 also the fact that they Chris clearly didn't take this seriously at all uh
101:44 next up we've got this one didn't load correctly cuz my internet wasn't working
101:47 looks like my internet's working now just we were trying to click on a dead oh no is it now it's working slightly
101:53 better I think that's supposed to load a card from the game that I don't remember
101:58 the name of that's made by blizzard Hearthstone really you couldn't
102:03 how many hours have you spent playing Hearthstone a fair amount I've played a
102:08 lot more playing wow and it has hearth stones in
102:11 it I should have
102:15 known this is a block field see these are not loading correctly guys this is
102:20 this Joy I know him too I know like all the people that submitted websites okay
102:24 they're supposed to look more like this but but the internet is a terrible thing
102:29 okay so maybe what I'll do guys is I'll tweet out the winner later because this just clearly isn't working I'm going to
102:33 go get the cake are we still going to be streaming
102:38 or are we stopping this I don't
102:41 know are you coming back I don't know
102:45 he's not sure okay well I'm going to try
102:48 and grab y for these things so we can at
102:52 least freaking look at them oh that loaded now so there we
102:57 go this is where I'd put my appren ship if I had one what is this supposed to
103:02 be think you about
103:06 Hardware no content
103:09 portfolio not a thing software
103:16 list that's pretty
103:19 cool ah you could hyperlink the
103:24 words that would makeig things
103:29 easier now that you left your computer's working fine awesome it just doesn't
103:33 like you anymore I'm going to leave this image on screen overheated I'm so hot
103:37 probably your pillow is like gross thank
103:42 you for that are you want to take some cake
103:46 Brandon would who would say no not a cake I
103:51 brought a plate and a Knife by the way I yeah that's fine all right I love how
103:55 you didn't bring like there's only one plate because you apparently don't
103:59 believe in dishes no eating you well I ran the dishwasher if you looked in the
104:03 dishwasher you ran the dishwasher and that's an excuse for not having clean
104:06 dishes no they're all clean they're in Howes your mind even function they're in
104:10 the dishwasher clean in the dishwasher clean why would they be clean if they
104:14 were in the dishwasher cuz I haven't taken them out yet why haven't you taken
104:17 them out yet if they're clean see logical no because if they were clean
104:21 you would have taken them out so clean makes it instantly
104:25 out um so if it's clean and in the dishwasher and your mind it is not clean
104:29 well if dishwashers worked the way that I think they should then yes you should
104:33 take the I'm very tired don't hurt
104:38 yourself I should not be operating heavy machinery rece all the oh that's all the
104:44 receipts that you owe me I think so could be wrong please don't hurt
104:49 yourself I have I have sliced the cake
104:52 nope nope I can handle this or don't hurt anyone else don't do
104:58 that don't do what I thought you were going to lick the ne no I'm not going to lick the bad IDE what are you even doing
105:02 I don't know I'm trying to hold this can you hold this I we both just
105:08 offer don't kill anyone hold on I'm trying to cut a piece no I can do
105:17 this I just want some cake
105:21 you didn't bring anything to eat it with what makes you think I need anything to
105:24 eat it with oh God it looks really good what kind I I
105:29 have no idea a knock knock to a cake
105:33 hopefully it tastes better than knock to a Fan's look okay so you have a plate
105:38 I'll take this oh God okay here you go
105:42 why did you even need a
105:46 oh why did you even need a plate then for you but you didn't bring me any
105:51 utensils to use so it's not any cleaner why do you need them here thank you
105:57 Brandon cuz go to
106:02 bed with
106:09 who I need to work actually do you yeah
106:14 what are you going to do are you are you like sensible enough to actually edit
106:18 something right now or should you just sleep still oh we're definitely still
106:23 streaming yeah that that didn't stop
106:26 okay no I don't know you know it's funny
106:31 because people often criticize my unprofessionalism on this show and yep
106:37 and then you always say we're going to be more professional and then you ensure that we definitely are not every time we
106:43 try to do something more professional people say they don't like it we should
106:47 go back to the old way not true not true
106:51 and someone says they don't like it well it's because usually when we try to do
106:54 something more professional we fail because we don't put any effort into it
106:58 and that and just people no we put effort into it we don't put planning
107:02 into it or planning yeah planning is the
107:05 problem effort is not the problem of effort a fork thank you B why
107:13 would you need a fork you know it actually tastes exactly
107:16 the same if you eat it out of your hands I don't think he knows that might
107:23 taste better if you have crappy Forks it could taste like B oh someone wants to
107:28 know who won the lonus and Logan giveaway uh yes we have chosen a winner
107:34 but I haven't coordinated with him for the announcement for us to do it at the
107:37 same time yet so
107:44 sorry why don't you eat the bottom I
107:47 don't really like the outside it's pretty heavy
107:50 like it's it's like I think it's do
107:57 they starts and the brown stuff's kind
108:01 of like gum it's like I can't what it's called
108:04 start with a P or something pH what it's
108:09 like acid no it's like there's acid in the cake well probably well in my
108:13 weakend state that'll be even more of a problem well there's probably some
108:16 amount of it I meant lfd I know but that's not
108:21 what I meant you should probably have some
108:25 right now it probably be perfect time me yeah
108:28 why not I don't think so are you phone hard are you hard phone hard foam no it
108:34 was phone not foam that's what I said I can't hear you very well cuz I'm
108:44 tired okay so the Cake's good what's
108:47 this thing now I don't
108:52 know it's it's not the most appealing it
108:55 looks really cool like I like I think that's why they were able to build a fan
109:00 out of it it's the same stuff they use on like and like shap
109:04 CES that's yeah it's like but it's like
109:10 pretty solid actually it's like it's like the solidest densest like sugar
109:16 thing that um sugar and FL yeah yeah
109:20 that's probably it 10 billion people are saying fond
109:24 Dent fondant cool someone says it's not
109:29 fond it's Mars thean either way I don't really like it
109:34 but uh my wife loves this kind of stuff does she so I'll take some for her for
109:38 sure perfect and I like that it looks like a fan me too yeah
109:43 wouldn't we should have probably like pict taken a picture of it we can take a
109:49 picture of it still we'll just Photoshop in the rest like
109:52 edel can do it or something
109:56 right oh my God you know usually when I
109:59 ask him if he can do something I have some idea that what I'm
110:03 asking him is really difficult but I pretend not to so that he'll try to
110:07 appease me and help me with it because I think if he knew that I knew that it was
110:11 near impossible he would be less likely to want to help me it looks like it
110:15 might be fondant fondong perhaps sure why
110:21 not wow that's weird yeah that's some
110:24 creepy stuff wow I just dropped another piece in my lap that's pretty cool I'm
110:28 going to like a family thing after this is it also partially because you have no
110:32 idea what he's doing just like how you assume certain programming things are
110:35 super easy when they're actually super hard and you think other are super hard
110:40 when they're actually super easy that could be that I know some
110:45 things no not about programming I don't know anything I was like what I mean I
110:50 mean I know some things in general I don't know much about programming you
110:53 definitely don't know much about
111:02 programing they're just talking about
111:08 whatever lus you said you would
111:14 announce giveaways for the GTX 670 and
111:17 the keyboard yeah that's the he already I already talked about
111:27 that H apparently that's still on
111:31 there okay well I guess I'll head out uh
111:35 I guess I'll have to come back tonight to get that footage sweet we drive back out here
111:42 that sounds pretty good you have cake on your shirt I have cake on my ARM and on
111:48 my hands and on your face
111:53 I think we're done here do you need like a clo
111:57 no can I borrow your shower yeah I'm going to operate the
112:02 mouse with my foot to turn off the stream why is this
112:06 happening why is this a thing well you
112:10 know we had that conversation earlier where I was asking you know when people
112:13 are swapping boss stories do you you know tell stories about me so you're
112:17 trying to get I wanted to make sure you don't get one up it's called fond
112:20 fondant yeah we marshmallows and flour and sugar marshmallows flour and sugar
112:25 I've actually made it before I it's extremely sweet oh yeah like a lot of
112:30 sugar yeah it
