0:00 okay so humor me for a minute here um my son's in grade one now and one of the
0:04 things they're doing in his class is pattern recognition so he brings home
0:09 his homework and he'll have a problem that looks a little something like this
0:15 now if he wrote 1660 ti as the answer to that question
0:22 i'd probably say something like why don't you think about it some more
0:26 and then try again and yet somehow he'd be right
0:30 so what in the sam fool is a gtx
0:36 1660 ti and
0:39 oh i don't know i mean who cares what they
0:42 call it if the product is good right so let's see if it is
0:47 but first speaking of good products our sponsor the oneplus 6t features top
0:52 of the line specs and oneplus's optimized oxygen os for a fast smooth
0:57 experience you can now win one of two in our giveaway at the link below
1:10 right off the bat some of you eagle-eyed viewers probably noticed that this
1:15 is not a founder's edition and there's a good reason for that there isn't one
1:20 NVIDIA left this launch entirely up to its board partners and that means that
1:24 we are going to see a pretty wide variety of designs ASUS alone has four
1:30 but contrary to the eec filings that were spotted prior to the launch the
1:35 core specs of all of them are going to be the same so there's no weird
1:39 variations with cut down memory to confuse people
1:43 for now not that there won't be any confusion
1:47 what the actual is up with the name of this thing
1:52 1660 ti the best guess that we came up with is
1:58 that it has 16 fp16 and 16 fp32 cores
2:04 but then when we asked NVIDIA their official response
2:08 after playing koi and pretending not to know that it wasn't perfectly normal was
2:13 that they chose it to differentiate it from the rtx 2060
2:19 which is almost as stupid as the way that they then giggled about it like
2:24 school children because there was a real reason that they couldn't tell us
2:29 so tldr for those interested is that it is
2:33 some kind of inside joke and knowing those guys it's probably a dirty one
2:37 kind of like how GeForce experience obviously shortens to gf or girlfriend
2:42 experience a more premium prostitution service where she pretends to be
2:46 genuinely interested in you instead of just having quick sex and leaving
2:50 so cool i guess why don't we move on specs wise at the
2:55 1660s heart is the more sensibly named tu-116 GPU which NVIDIA claims is not
3:02 simply a tu-106 with some features cut out but rather a brand new GPU
3:07 engineered from the ground up without the machine learning tensor or real-time
3:12 ray tracing rt course from the rtx
3:15 series it's got 20 percent fewer cuda cores
3:18 than the rtx 2060 so on the surface it looks like it'll be much slower even in
3:24 conventional games without rtx on
3:28 but thankfully just like we saw with the Radeon 7 compared to vega 64 we are also
3:33 treated to a hefty core clock increase which should help make up some ground
3:37 especially considering that we will still get all of the other touring
3:41 goodies cash improvements variable rate shader rendering concurrent floating
3:46 point and integer processing and perhaps
3:49 most importantly for the entry-level game streamers out there that new
3:53 touring and bank engine that provides image quality comparable to CPU driven
3:58 x264 that crispy gameplay footage
4:02 now we're only going to use one test bench today to keep things a little
4:05 simpler than our Radeon 7 review but it
4:08 should give you a good idea of where this card falls
4:12 and the gaming results look very promising
4:16 at 1080p we are seeing equivalent or better performance than the gtx 1070
4:21 across the board and titles that are designed with simultaneous floating
4:26 point and integer math in mind like shadow of the tomb raider see a pretty
4:30 big performance boost it's especially important to consider here that the gtx
4:35 1070 has 384 more cuda cores than the new 1660 ti
4:41 that's impressive and these results even carried over to
4:45 our 1440p testing where we got playable
4:48 if less consistent frame rates on this very mid-range card this is the
4:54 generational improvement that we had been looking for in touring up until now
4:58 it's just taken NVIDIA this long to strip out some of those cost adding
5:02 features that many gamers don't want to pay more for right now
5:06 when we move on to productivity though the gtx 1660 ti falters somewhat now it
5:12 does at least keep up with the 1070 that it's looking to usurp in most tasks with
5:18 longer blender renders being a particularly strong point but in other
5:21 tests like luxmark and most of specuperf
5:24 we're looking at significantly less consistency it does come out ahead
5:29 sometimes but then also significantly behind in other times
5:33 in fairness though i guess we should expect this from a card that has fewer
5:37 cuda cores but then executes combined math instructions more efficiently with
5:42 a more efficient cache setup as for thermals well
5:46 this high-end board design from ASUS represents a best case scenario with a
5:52 seriously overbuilt cooler so i won't spend too much time talking about it but
5:56 what we can glean a bit of information from is the power draw this card draws
6:01 nearly 10 watts less power on the 12
6:04 volt connector than the rtx 2060 and
6:07 even less than the gtx 1070 which if you'll recall it meets or exceeds in
6:13 terms of performance not a bad result
6:17 and it gets even better even our pre-factory overclocked card had some
6:22 headroom for overclocking with oc scanner and with more direct tuning it
6:26 could probably go a little further silicon lottery willing
6:30 so then let's answer the big question here was video right to be truly teed
6:36 off with me when i concluded my rtx 2060
6:39 review by recommending that our viewers simply wait for this card which at that
6:44 time was a mere rumor that did they deny it no they just refused to
6:48 comment on it well even ignoring the missing features
6:53 that define the rtx cards from a price to performance standpoint things are
6:57 actually a little blurry here so our top of the line ASUS card here
7:02 costs 329 that is just 20 bucks cheaper than a
7:07 reference rtx 2060. honestly that makes the ray tracing and
7:13 tensor core equipped version the obvious choice in every scenario so as usual the
7:19 premium versions of mainstream products don't make a ton of sense
7:24 but when we drop down to the reference model at 279 which should perform pretty
7:29 much the same the gtx 1660s value
7:33 proposition becomes a little more clear it outpaces AMD's rx 590 at a similar
7:38 price and it outpaces the gtx 1070 which
7:42 launched at a hundred dollars more and currently sells for 300
7:47 so for folks looking for an upgrade from a 9 or a lower end 10 series card
7:53 hey a card that cost less than 300 for that kind of performance is an excellent
7:58 value proposition the only problem is that if you're
8:02 ponying up for a whole new system rather than upgrading by our numbers it's
8:08 basically a no-brainer to spend the extra seventy dollars on an rtx 2060.
8:13 we're actually planning a full video where we talk about this particular
8:16 value calculation sometime in the future
8:19 in conclusion though well played NVIDIA you guys managed to
8:24 deliver just the right amount of value to edge
8:27 out the competition and no more you
8:31 truly are team green
8:36 speaking of the letter t this video is brought to you by
8:41 thermaltake thermaltake's a 500 aluminum mid tower case features a minimalistic
8:46 approach to the design with brushed aluminum surfaces for a clean
8:50 uninterrupted look it's got hinged tempered glass panels on both sides of
8:53 the case it fits radiators up to 420 mils in the front and the i o panel
8:58 includes a type c usb port so don't wait
