0:00 thanks for watching techwiki click the subscribe button then enable
0:03 notifications with the bell icon so you won't miss any future videos do you
0:07 remember when youtube was a repository for 240p cat videos and memorializing
0:12 trips to the zoo like i'm a full-time youtuber who
0:16 employs two dozen people and even i had no idea back then that the site would
0:21 explode into a platform that would allow people to make a full-time living by
0:26 uploading videos that other people watch for free but explode it did these days
0:32 youtube stardom has been a ticket to international notoriety and lucrative
0:36 careers for many people who started out with nothing more than a webcam and a
0:41 good idea or in some cases kind of a bad idea but where the heck does all this
0:47 money come from well just like how real celebrities might make money in a lot of
0:52 different ways tv deals endorsements
0:55 fashion lines ill-advised forays into music
0:58 online creators can actually have a variety of revenue streams as well let's
1:03 start out with the most obvious one google adsense this program allows
1:08 creators like me to earn a share of the money from the advertising that you
1:12 might see before a video you know the ones with the yellow progress bar along
1:16 the bottom and sometimes a skip ad button on the right
1:20 outside advertisers bid on these paying
1:24 more for unskippable or longer video spots and less for banners and other
1:29 less desirable placements youtube then runs these ads you see them and that
1:35 money gets shared between youtube itself and whichever creators video the ad was
1:39 run against so if you get a lot of views it's a fairly straightforward way to
1:44 monetize them but there are a few caveats first you have to have a total
1:48 of at least four thousand hours watched in one year and a thousand subscribers
1:53 to be eligible for this sort of monetization and
1:57 creators have to certify that their videos aren't offensive or
2:01 politically sensitive as advertisers have become increasingly concerned about
2:05 the possibility that their ads will be run against videos that might turn off
2:10 consumers and lead to outrage on twitter meaning that for some creators adsense
2:15 actually ends up being a fairly small percentage of their overall revenue
2:20 another model that many creators use is brand deals these often take the form of
2:25 product placements or brand messaging that is directly baked into the actual
2:30 video instead of being separately served from the adsense program techwiki is a
2:35 perfect example of this speaking of which i'm sure you guys have seen the
2:40 spots that we do at the end of each episode that often start with speaking
2:43 of something if it wasn't for our outside sponsors this channel which
2:47 strives to be more about information at the expense of some clickability would
2:52 struggle to operate profitably so for the most part creators are free
2:56 to negotiate brand deals directly with potential sponsors keeping all of the ad
3:01 revenue for themselves this means they can be quite lucrative but there's also
3:06 a lot more management overhead because there are so
3:10 many ways to approach this so some deals
3:13 are per video some are bonus based some
3:16 offer rewards for extra engagement through clicks and views or even twitter
3:21 followers so all of a sudden someone whose entire life's focus has been on
3:26 creating content can find themselves making pitch decks
3:30 sitting on conference calls and compiling proof of performance reports
3:36 bringing us to yet another way that creators make money affiliate links
3:40 oftentimes creators who feature a certain product in their videos such as
3:43 for an unboxing a haul or a review we'll
3:46 include a link to an online retailer like amazon in the video description if
3:51 a viewer clicks the link and buys something the creator will get a
3:55 kickback from the retailer in return for driving traffic to their site
3:59 now although each individual purchase might only net a small amount of money
4:04 affiliate revenue can add up to a lot over time so it's a significant thing
4:09 that viewers can do to help their favorite creators make money unless
4:13 they'd rather just cut out the extra step and give it to them directly now we
4:16 don't do too much of this on techwiki but either through youtube's own
4:20 memberships program or third-party sites like patreon and Floatplane shameless
4:25 plug viewers can contribute directly to their
4:28 favorite shows in return for rewards like live hangouts early access
4:33 exclusive content or even just fuzzy feelings of gratitude
4:37 not that that's enough for most people so we'd be remiss if we didn't mention
4:42 merchandise some youtubers make a small amount of
4:45 money from selling a t-shirt here or a sticker there well for others it makes
4:51 up a significant part of the business like logan paul's maverick clothing line
4:55 or zoella's beauty product portfolio
4:59 so then that's most of the common stuff but frankly just like how you can find
5:04 videos about just about anything on youtube you can also find a seemingly
5:08 unlimited supply of creative ideas for
5:11 how to make money on youtube we've seen everything from traditional media gigs
5:16 like appearing on reality shows or hosting events to going on live tours
5:22 both music and other in the case of something like source fed's tour which i
5:26 actually attended when they were here in vancouver youtube premium and crowdfunding have
5:30 also opened up some interesting opportunities freddie wong's video game
5:34 high school was a breakout online slash
5:37 traditional media crossover and since then we've seen more funding get put
5:42 towards both serialized ideas akin to traditional tv shows and feature length
5:47 ones like smosh the movie i mean really
5:50 if you think about it anywhere the creator's brand can be leveraged to sell
5:55 more widgets you will find it uh conventions have
5:59 been springing up ever since people realized that vidcon was profitable and
6:03 those are also really fun actually ltx was a blast for the last couple of years
6:08 we're not making money on it in case you guys were wondering but it's still fun
6:11 we're gonna keep doing it and then pewdiepie even did a mobile game that
6:15 from my understanding performed very well for him so the one thing that all
6:20 of these methods have in common so far is that they require a strong viewer
6:25 base and i'm going to bust a popular misconception right now you do not get
6:29 paid a penny for having a lot of subscribers it is all about views
6:36 but there is some good news even much smaller niche creators have come up with
6:40 some really clever ideas that work for them including providing services that
6:44 are closely related to their tutorials for people who just couldn't be arsed to
6:49 do it themselves selling the creations that they make on
6:52 video or on stream directly to their viewers or providing one-on-one or group
6:57 lessons to people who are willing to pay so hopefully if you're an aspiring
7:01 creator this has gotten the gears turning for you but then if it hasn't
