0:00 since the early days of video gaming we've been looking for more and more
0:04 ways to take our games with us from the Primitive handhelds of the 1970s that
0:10 could only play one game each to the 3DS
0:13 which brought portable stereo 3D to the
0:16 masses to the NVIDIA Shield that can stream full quality games wirelessly
0:22 from a PC so as it becomes increasingly
0:25 easy to cram high-end equipment into a
0:28 small package I mean just think what's possible these days with a smartphone or
0:33 a small form factor computer it might not be surprising that the next big
0:38 thing in console gaming might be Nintendo's new Switch a living room
0:44 console that's also being pitched as a
0:47 fully portable console wait
0:50 what okay so it's like this the switch
0:53 took one of the main selling points of its commercially unsuccessful
0:57 predecessor the Wii U and made it a lot
1:01 more robust the Wii U featured a screen
1:04 on the main controller that enabled the gamer to play without a TV uh maybe
1:09 while they were in the bathroom or something but the caveat was that you
1:14 had to stay within a certain range of the actual console which combined with a
1:19 distinct lack of killer apps meant that
1:22 this wasn't enough to lure people away from competition like Sony and
1:28 Microsoft but not to be dissuaded by
1:31 poor sales figures Nintendo making what
1:34 some consider to be its last stand in the living room console arena is
1:39 doubling down on this concept by making the switch's 720p screen part of the
1:46 console itself which has a tabletes form
1:49 factor and weighs slightly less than 400
1:52 G with the controllers attached to the side a little lighter than an iPad Air 2
1:58 when you're using the switch in standard living room mode or TV mode as Nintendo
2:03 calls it the console connects and charges over USB typc to an included
2:09 dock that features an HDMI port and
2:12 three spare USB type A ports although
2:15 the switch comes with a somewhat meager 32 GB of internal storage this is
2:20 expandable through a Micro SD card slot
2:23 good on you Nintendo so the switch will play games at either 1080P or 900 P at
2:30 up to 60 frames per second while connected to a TV and this is cool in
2:36 60fps titles it can even maintain this frame rate when you take it on the road
2:42 but if this wasn't enough of a paradigm shift for you where things get really
2:47 interesting is when we start to look at the controller setup the switch actually
2:52 comes with a pair of controllers so yes
2:55 you get local multiplayer out of the box they're called joycon on and they bear a
3:01 passing resemblance to Wii remotes but are quite a bit more versatile in
3:05 addition to being smaller the console comes with a joycon grip that holds the
3:10 joy-cons together to allow them to behave like a single controller with
3:15 more traditional ergonomics but if you want to remove the switch from the dock
3:19 and take it with you the joycons can also act as independent controllers for
3:24 portable local multiplayer or they can slide directly onto the console itself
3:29 making it look kind of like the Wii U controller except with the ability to
3:34 play on toilets everywhere instead of just the ones in your home and Nintendo
3:40 is pushing the multiplayer aspect very hard here not only emphasizing how folks
3:45 can play with separate controllers on the same screen wherever they go but
3:49 also that up to eight separate switch
3:52 consoles can be linked together on a local network some games will even run
3:57 on multiple switches in this manner with
4:00 just one cartridge similar to Diablo spawn or download play on the
4:05 3DS joycons also support motion sensing
4:09 but a bit differently than you might have experienced it on the Wii or the
4:13 Wii U one of your two joycons has an IR
4:16 sensor that can detect not only motion but distances and shapes and both
4:22 joy-cons support what Nintendo is calling HD Rumble which is an advanced
4:27 haptic engine that can simulate lots of
4:30 different Sensations Nintendo demoed
4:34 this by showing how it could simulate the feeling of an ice cube rattling
4:39 around a glass with the player being able to distinguish between one and
4:43 multiple cubes and between solid ice and liquid water pretty cool if big if game
4:50 devs actually Implement any of these features on the subject of the games
4:54 themselves this is an area Nintendo is definitely looking to improve on over 50
5:00 games are in development and there's going to be extra emphasis on
5:04 first-party titles like Mario and Zelda
5:07 to give players an optimally nintendoe
5:10 experience but even though the switch is obviously newer than the PS4 or Xbox One
5:16 don't expect it to push the limits of console performance the NVIDIA Tegra GPU
5:21 also isn't going to come close to competing with a high-end PC graphics
5:25 card but it wasn't designed to as Nintendo experiences tend to be less
5:30 about Cutting Edge graphics and more about delivering something unique that
5:34 isn't easy to replicate on a PC or other gaming box and of course tempering the
5:40 graphics horsepower means better battery life the console itself is expected to
5:45 work for 3 to 6 hours while the joy-cons can get up to 20 hours each one thing
5:51 that's decidedly not that cool is that
5:54 unlike in the past Nintendo is going to start charging an annual fee for on
5:59 online multiplayer though thankfully they are widely expected to undercut
6:04 Sony and Microsoft so you probably won't be paying nearly as much as you would
6:08 for a PSN or Xbox Live subscription so
6:11 will it be successful at $300 the launch
6:15 price puts it on par with the PS4 and expone right now except that they come
6:20 with an included game and both have massive back catalogs so whether you
6:27 make the switch will ultimately come down to Nintendo
6:32 being more successful selling this
6:35 hybrid Paradigm than NVIDIA
6:39 was tunnel bear tunnel bear lets you VPN
