0:00 you know i thought it might have been the only one who noticed at least until
0:03 i read this comment on mac rumors from user roman empire but
0:07 while i was watching the september 2018 keynote i was blown away that even
0:13 apple's own executives who need i remind you managed to muster at least some
0:17 excitement about the iphone 5c just didn't seem to care about their
0:23 newest and shiniest flagships why didn't they care
0:27 what could compel someone to upgrade their existing iphone x what are the
0:30 selling points here what could compel someone to upgrade even an iphone 7 for
0:34 that matter and why hasn't Linus segwayed into the
0:37 sponsor for this video yet oh wait no that was it today's video is
0:42 brought to you by origin pc origin pc's evo 15s weighs only 4.3 pounds features
0:48 a smooth 144hz 1080p display and an NVIDIA GeForce gtx 1070 max q check out
0:53 their latest deals at the link below
1:04 i actually almost bailed on this video entirely in favor of a totally different
1:08 concept where i walked around like men on the street style and pretended to
1:12 show people the latest new iphone except it was actually just going to be
1:17 an iphone 10 because honestly even i a a
1:20 tech nerd would need to install ida or
1:23 check the model number or the storage capacity of one of the new 512 gig
1:28 models to know that it's a 2018 model year unless it was gold that's that's
1:33 the one new thing this year a gold color so the truth is i've actually spent the
1:38 last couple of weeks using the iphone 10s max as my everyday phone and i've
1:43 been struggling to find anything to say about this thing that
1:47 isn't a list of petty complaints many of which i've given up any hope that apple
1:52 will even fix and i'm just i'm having a
1:55 really hard time so i guess all we can do is get into it almost immediately
1:59 after opening the box i began missing my samsung galaxy note 9. it's got a bigger
2:04 screen it's got a more subtle rounding of the corners meaning you get more
2:07 usable screen real estate and oh right when i slid out the sim tray no
2:13 expandable storage still and not even dual sim on this model now i talked
2:18 about this in my note 9 review but the remarkable thing about that phone
2:22 is the zero compromises nature of it it's big
2:26 and it's expensive but other than a lackluster commitment
2:30 to software support which is something samsung really does need to address it
2:34 gives up nothing by contrast on my over thousand dollar
2:40 new iphone i haven't even installed my first app and i find myself reaching for
2:44 my stupid headphone dongle the one i already had mind you because they don't
2:49 even include one in the box anymore and i'm staring at what well at first looked
2:54 like a massive notch by late 2018 standards at least that is until google
3:00 released the pixel 3 xl and the game
3:03 changed somewhat that's neither here nor there while i'm whining
3:07 i really really hate the name of the iphone 10s for those of you who
3:13 are wondering the last time apple used roman numerals in its product naming
3:16 scheme was 1994 and they never went
3:19 higher than three why would that be well because it's
3:23 confusing almost no one that i know in the
3:26 mainstream refers to the iphone 10 as anything other than the iphone x and
3:31 look apple if you're gonna do something stupid like this do it properly has
3:36 anyone out there tried to type iphone 10s
3:40 on their iphone this is a perfect example of apple's
3:45 utter failure to keep pace with the auto correcting and predictive typing
3:49 capabilities of microsoft swiftkey and google's g board
3:53 as for dictation well i didn't have much more luck there either
3:58 i mean siri can at least do basic things like turn on the flashlight for me now
4:02 but alexa and google assistant as flawed as they are too are making
4:07 siri look utterly incompetent these days i mean do you guys remember when apple
4:11 was way ahead of the game in the ai assistant race because i remember
4:17 making matters worse apple's design for the iphone 10s you know
4:22 that thing that they are so far up their own butts about that they literally made
4:27 a 300 book dedicated to their own greatness
4:30 it's looking dated already the iphone 6
4:34 look went basically unchanged for four generations or three and a half
4:38 depending on how you count it and it didn't really look out of style until
4:42 the third or the fourth when samsung launched the galaxy s8 and the s8 plus
4:47 that is how far ahead apple was
4:50 that recently the iphone 10s already looks
4:55 unexceptional at best with how fast display technology is moving right now
4:59 and a big part of that is the thicker bezels on the sides and the notch on the
5:03 top the other alarming thing here is that
5:06 apple is not only failing to lead in terms of design trends they're becoming
5:11 a follower and a slow one at that when it comes to wider industry trends so
5:16 think back first apple failed to take the lead on
5:20 the trend of having two different sizes for each flagship generation
5:25 then inexplicably even after fixing that
5:28 problem with the six and the six plus
5:31 they managed to miss participating in the large phablet-sized category for an
5:37 entire generation of product last year
5:41 how is it that there was no iphone 10 max
5:44 with all of the resources and employees that apple has at their disposal to make
5:49 at most three phones per year
5:52 it really raises the question what were they doing
5:56 was it a strategy thing was it not quite ready for the september
6:00 keynote so just i don't know wait a year and
6:04 get it on the next one there's a difference between attention to detail
6:09 and striving for perfection and just being inflexible and obstinate
6:14 on that subject it turns out that i still hate the lack of a back button on
6:18 iOS the swipe right across gesture
6:21 does work and it's better than the old way of reaching up to the very top left
6:25 of the display but the issue is that much like when we were still reaching up
6:30 to the top left and apple all of a sudden started making bigger screen
6:33 phones apple's hardware is getting ahead of its software again so the back
6:38 gesture requires a really clear swipe
6:41 from the edge which is hard to execute with small hands on such a big phone now
6:46 it's far less of an issue on the iphone 10s than it is on the max but this is
6:51 the one i spent most of my time with primarily because it was less jarring
6:55 moving to it from the note 9 and then also because i found the display notch
7:00 far less distracting with the increase in overall screen real estate back to
7:04 the notch though one good thing is that it still gives apple room for face id
7:09 which faster face id by the way is one of the few headline features of this new
7:13 phone but then it also serves as yet another
7:17 example of something where apple is letting others take their feature their
7:22 idea and innovate on it and even improve it
7:25 so the oppo find x lets you swipe anywhere on the screen rather than only
7:31 at the bottom to activate its face id copycat
7:34 apple doesn't allow you to do this and instead it forces you to swipe from the
7:40 bottom which is a little tougher ergonomically especially when you're
7:43 holding such a large and heavy phone and often requires you to shift your hand
7:47 down i guarantee you that someone has already dropped a 10s max because of
7:51 this now i do need to derail the rant train a
7:54 little bit here for an in fairness to apple segment
7:58 Android fans have always loved pointing
8:02 out how wrecked apple got by their favorite device du jour having that same
8:07 feature or a better one while conveniently ignoring that there's
8:11 typically been no single device on the Android side that brings it all together
8:16 in the way that apple does so to be clear i am not recommending the
8:20 findex over the iphone 10s or even the iphone 10 or even the iphone 8 for that
8:25 matter but Android fans also never had the note 9
8:29 to point to before now you're probably noticing by this point in the video that
8:32 i've brought up the note 9 a lot normally i try to limit my galaxy note 9
8:38 mentions to one to two per video as much as i love it and the reason for that is
8:42 the price the galaxy note 9 is an unfair
8:46 comparison for the vast majority of other devices on the market
8:51 unfortunately for apple they give up any leeway that they might have had
8:54 otherwise when they command the highest price of any mainstream smartphone
9:00 though to be clear i'm glad that they're at least offering a 512 gig option even
9:04 if it costs 1500 us dollars so then the iphone has traditionally set
9:09 itself apart in the camera department how's that going honestly not too bad
9:14 apple's color science continues to stand out from anyone but google but i still
9:19 have some frustrations starting with apple's assumption that every power user
9:23 will use a third party app i mean i get that the included one is supposed to be
9:27 one touch dead simple any idiot can do it
9:30 but then if that's the case why do you guys keep cluttering it up there are so
9:35 many modes they don't even all fit on the screen anymore including the
9:38 incredibly unnecessary square and if we're gonna have all these buttons why
9:43 not add some of the customization that people are asking for most of the
9:47 complaints i've seen about this phone are actually about the selfie camera and
9:51 the uh the smoothing and processing that's being done by it that doesn't
9:56 appear even now to be possible to turn off
9:59 with that said though my worst experience was actually in portrait mode
10:04 it managed to do everything from this astonishing background removal on a
10:08 moving target down to this atrocity where it managed to add a couple of
10:12 extra teeth to my daughter's smile now these kinds of heavy processing
10:17 techniques have long been included on competitors devices with major ones like
10:21 samsung even enabling them by default but one difference is that they tend to
10:26 be more transparent and they tend to
10:29 allow more configuration of the processing so why was the response to
10:34 turn it to 11 and lock it there and why not record an unaltered version of the
10:39 image for safety is this just the
10:42 apple knows what's best for you mentality hopefully by the time i post this video
10:46 apple will have patched themselves out of this mess overall the camera in the normal mode
10:51 the one that i always use it in and ignoring dxomark and all that kind of
10:55 stuff just using it day-to-day to capture the moments that mean something
10:58 to me met my expectations let's move on
11:02 to a couple more apple knows best frustrations
11:05 if you capture a screenshot of something you can only share to apps that apple
11:09 expects now this is better than locking you down to first party options but a notable
11:14 omission that made my life more inconvenient for the last couple of weeks is the facebook pages manager
11:20 now i'll work around the first time that i did this was for me to save the
11:25 screenshot locally but then this was another apple knows best thing so what i
11:29 realized is that there's no way to manually select your photos folder when
11:34 you want to save a screenshot you actually just have to
11:38 exit the screenshot and then confirm that you want to keep it and it'll
11:42 automatically go to your photos folder like i mean i get that this is
11:46 intuitive but why remove the option from the other
11:50 way it's this kind of thing that always has and probably always will irk me about
11:55 the iphone one thing that they did fix this time
11:58 around is notification management though so huge gold star there it is super easy
12:03 to access grouped messages and emails and you can dismiss your whole backlog
12:08 in one fell swoop just oh beautiful awesome there you go and
12:13 there's more good news mostly good news so i'm a lot more used to gesture-based
12:17 navigation now from playing around with it on a couple of Android phones
12:20 actually including the oneplus 6 and you know what gesture navigation is
12:25 fine but it's not entirely without issue and
12:29 not everyone will necessarily prefer it and actually this one is a criticism of
12:33 both samsung and apple buttons or gestures you know what it's
12:38 2018. they're both good i would like to have a choice and i think you guys can
12:43 both do better which i guess brings us perfectly back to annoyances so uh this
12:47 whole video is actually getting kind of exhausting maybe we won't go for much
12:51 longer um all right here we go
12:54 you still can't hard press your wi-fi icon in order to get to your wi-fi
12:58 settings you have to do it the long way the upgrade still can't have gaps
13:02 forcing you to make big piles of useless crap in the top of your screen to put
13:06 your most frequently used stuff at the bottom where it all belongs there is
13:10 still no t9 dialing
13:14 i don't understand why that's so hard and
13:17 a year freaking later a year after the
13:20 launch of the iphone 10 the notch still gets in the way occasionally like right
13:25 here in the twitter app where i actually had a heck of a time targeting the
13:28 handful of pixels that i needed to hit in order to switch to my personal
13:31 account what i can only hope for is that maybe this is an indication that this
13:36 notch design language will be short-lived
13:40 so i think that's pretty much it
13:44 so let's close this video out with the craziest part
13:49 almost everything that i just said for the last 12 or 13 minutes or whatever
13:54 has been common knowledge to people who pay attention to the iphone for a year
13:59 so the iphone 10s it's boring it risks
14:03 nothing but people bought the crap out of the last one so
14:07 i guess if it ain't broke don't fix it enjoy your iphones everyone
14:13 and while you're at it maybe enjoy them even better with a skin from dbrand
14:17 dbrand is your source for awesome vinyl skins they're available for laptops
14:21 phones tablets consoles controllers and more they actually shipped over our
14:25 iphone 10s and 10s plus with this sexy
14:29 new one that i'm calling black golf ball anyway they're useful for all kinds of
14:33 things they make your device stand out and they also make it actually more
14:36 resilient to incidental bumps and scuffs i even dropped the 10s and i managed to
14:41 dent the corner here without going all the way through the skin so i didn't end
14:44 up with a dent on my phone i was super thrilled about that their customer
14:48 service robots are easy to work with and their products are affordable and ship worldwide so go check out dbrand at the
14:53 link in the video description so thanks for watching guys i hope that wasn't as
14:57 tiring for you to listen to as it was for me to say um if you dislike this
15:01 video you can hit that button hi mr cook if you liked it though hit like get
15:04 subscribed or maybe consider checking out where to buy the stuff we featured at the link in the video description i
15:08 mean to be clear it's not bad if you like the iphone then i guess just buy
15:12 one um while you're down there you can check out our merch store which has cool
15:15 shirts like this one and our community forum which is totally worth joining
15:20 you know i was really looking forward to going back to the note 9 but then like
15:24 all these phones started showing up razer phone 2 the rog phone pixel 3.
15:29 like i'm not going to get back to the note 9 for like two months
