0:00 we have actually got two new CPUs from Intel today both of which I would
0:05 classify as enthusiasts delight at the Forefront is the cor i74790k code named
0:11 T's Canyon their new 4 GHz base 4.4 GHz
0:16 boost quad core hyperthreaded unlocked and overclockable mainstream Flagship
0:20 and then quietly in the background is the Pentium g3258 with a modest 3.2 GHz
0:25 clock speed and two processing cores with no hyperthreading and no turbo
0:29 boost so with that all in mind the star of the show today might surprise you a
0:40 bit for the ultimate no compromises compact gaming PC look no further than
0:46 the obsidian series 250d from Corsair click now to learn more let's start with
0:51 an explanation of Intel's Devil's Canyon code name and what that actually means
0:55 the Silicon is actually not physically different than previous Haswell CPUs so
1:00 put aside your expectations of tangible performance gains at the same clock
1:03 speeds um this is an evolutionary step not a revolutionary one so what does
1:08 that even mean well on the surface not too much the core i74790k features a 100
1:14 MHz clock speed improvement over the 4770k with the same features enabled at
1:19 the same price so it's sure better than a kick in the pants but if that's all
1:23 that we were getting the whole Devil's Canyon branding might have seemed a
1:26 little bit out of place the two main real improvements are actually more
1:30 behind the scenes and some of the most Enthusiast friendly things Intel's done
1:35 in quite some time it looks like they're really listening to us first up they
1:39 have fixed the thermal interface material between the core and the metal
1:43 heat spreader on the top of the CPU that was causing Haswell chips to run
1:47 extremely hot especially when overvolting and overclocking for more
1:51 performance number two is that due to small incremental improvements in the
1:56 manufacturing process yields on these dieses have allowed Intel to provide
2:02 much more consistently highly overclockable 4790 K compared to the
2:08 previous generation Haswell chips so
2:11 more consistency in the overclocking again a big thumbs up put together these
2:15 two things aren't going to be enough to make every current Haswell owner toss
2:19 their chip and rush to the store for an upgrade but they will mean a more
2:23 consistent overclocking experience and a cooler running CPU for anyone who does
2:26 take the plunge I'll be handing off to Luke to give you guys some of what we
2:30 could squeeze out of our sample and how it compares to running at stock speed
2:34 but first I'd like to introduce the real star of the show today I MHO the Pentium
2:41 g3258 might not have sounded exceptional when I introduced it but I left off one
2:45 very important thing it's unlocked that means that for the first
2:50 time in years Intel is giving Gamers and enthusiasts the gift of an overclockable
2:54 chip that's priced so low that you can get it and an overclocking ready Z87 or
2:59 z9 7 motherboard for less than the price
3:02 of their previously entry-level unlocked CPU at the core i5 tier so just as a
3:08 recap it's got only two cores less cash
3:11 no hyperthreading and no support for turboing up to faster speeds under ideal
3:15 conditions on its own but who cares we got this bad boy to 4.7 GHz on our test
3:21 bench so stay tuned for some gaming Benchmark suckas oh and spoiler alert
3:25 it's going to be surprisingly close to the quad core all the bells and whistles
3:29 models in gaming over to you Luke I'm going to start with a quick disclaimer
3:34 for both of these processors lonus gave me exactly zero minutes to fine-tune the
3:38 voltage I was able to get the fastest clock speed I could get on these chips
3:43 but I was not able to lower the voltage to an acceptable level so the voltage is
3:46 going to be a little bit high and you could definitely get away with a little bit lower voltage on both of these chips
3:51 for both of these speeds but this is as fast as I was able to get either of them
3:56 the 4790k was pretty nice to overclock and deals with temperatures quite well
3:59 well even at 1.3 volts running at full load under ID to 64 it only got to about
4:04 70 75° the penum K though was super
4:08 freaking surprising I was told this was supposed to be a great processor but
4:13 getting it on the bench and messing it with with it yourself is kind of
4:16 fantastic Under full load id64 1.35
4:20 volts this thing only gets about 60 65°
4:23 that's crazy you can get that lower obviously by getting a better voltage
4:26 threshold but it you almost don't even need to the potential of this processor
4:31 is fantastic so let's check out that performance in terms of gaming
4:34 performance the 4790k did about as expected it's a little bit faster and
4:38 everything but not a ton faster don't worry about the star Sion result I think
4:42 that's probably more based on Star Sion not being very well optimized yet as
4:46 it's pre-alpha um and less to do with the
4:49 processor the Pentium K though holy crap if you're getting this processor please
4:53 overclock it you get so much benefit from overclocking this thing it's
4:58 awesome it's very noticeable in certain games and one thing to note is one of
5:01 the biggest improvements that in that is increasing this average result which
5:05 we're reporting is an increase in minimum frame rates which is going to be
5:08 the most noticeable so this is great to overclock this processor especially with
5:13 you're only overclocking two cores and they're the two most important cores so
5:17 please overclock this processor before we jump into cine bench performance I
5:20 want to give a shout out to the cinebench thread in the CPU section of the lineus tech tips Forum started by
5:25 jumper 118 that thread's kind of awesome and we will be showing performance
5:30 probably directly based to the results in that thread so you guys can compare
5:33 the results in that thread to these processors directly the Pentium K didn't
5:38 do that great but that's kind of expected this thing isn't designed for
5:41 heavily threaded workloads and cinebench is so I wouldn't worry about that too
5:45 much the 4790k did very well on the other hand to reiterate on our voltage
5:50 we're currently running an h100 and you don't need to spend $100 on your CPU
5:54 Cooler Tom's Hardware has a report of 4.6 GHz on on air with much less voltage
6:00 than we're currently running and I might have been able to get my voltage down
6:03 but who knows I just wouldn't worry about spending more than your processor
6:07 on a cooler you can get very good results with this CPU with not a ton of
6:12 heat if you want more guidance on how to overclock these CPUs and hopefully how
6:16 to tune that voltage in a little bit more Linus we'll have a full
6:19 overclocking guide coming in the near future from Linus and speaking of lonus
6:24 back to you hey I'm back so one more tip guys is that as appealing as those
6:29 numbers looked and as appealing as the price for this chip will look if you
6:33 check the link to the product in the video description remember when you're shopping to factor in platform cost
6:39 overclocking friendly competing boards from the Green Team are cheaper than
6:44 zseries boards so watch out for that but
6:47 then again there are rumors about some H series boards being hacks sored to
6:51 overclock the g3258 which would bring pricing much closer so keep your ear to
6:56 the ground in the coming months and make sure you're paying attention when it's
7:00 actually time to pull the trigger now speaking of your ears to the ground or
7:05 something our latest new sponsor is Ting and their whole Spiel is actually pretty
7:08 straightforward there are a wireless carrier in the US that says straight up
7:12 we're running on the Sprint network so you won't be using some janky small one
7:16 they bill per use rather than requiring you to play like guessing games about
7:19 how many texts you're going to send in a given month and then pick out a prepackaged plan and when you call their
7:24 customer service you talk to a real person not an automated menu finally
7:28 they claim that 90 8% of people will save money by switching to Ting but you
7:33 don't have to take their word for it check out the link in the video description to try out their savings
7:37 calculator the way it works is you enter the numbers from your last three bills
7:40 on your current carrier and it shows you how much you would have paid if you were on Ting neat hey on top of that if you
7:45 go to ling.com which is that link in the video description you can get 25 bucks
7:49 off a new device or $25 in service credit cool eh anyway guys like this
7:55 video if you liked it dislike it if you disliked it leave a comment tell me what
7:58 do you think who who who was the star of the show Devil's Canyon or the Pentium
8:04 g3258 I think you guys all know which one Luke and I most excited about but
8:08 hey there you go everybody loves a bargain right don't forget to subscribe
8:12 if you haven't already and that's it peace out I got to go do W show in like
8:16 19 minutes you guys wonder why that show is late sometimes
8:30 he
