2:16 talk about a bunch of different stuff the post has been updated a few times actually been very well taken care of by
2:22 the hotter potato this has been nuts if
2:25 you've been on the internet this week almost at all even if you're not that
2:28 into gaming you have probably heard about this there's huge controversies
2:32 where countries like belgium are considering uh classifying different
2:36 games as gambling online gambling because of how loot boxes are being
2:40 handled because this post has gotten so
2:43 big that it has gotten two people that manage laws in countries which is pretty
2:48 crazy congressmen are being contacted about this like it's it's blown up to a
2:52 ludicrous degree which is good or bad depending on your stance probably bad um
2:58 let's start at the beginning yeah so the beginning is this post and
3:02 then what really blew it up is the developer responding which usually makes
3:06 things better it super did not i'm sure a lot of this is
3:10 uh same old same old from what you guys have heard so before we get into their
3:14 response why don't we outline what happened to begin with it's basically everyone getting super super duper mad
3:18 because the new star wars battlefront 2 game from ea
3:22 which is a flagship title that costs 80 bucks yes
3:26 also has heavily uh these pay to win game mechanics so
3:31 how that kind of works and i i played in the beta and i started to feel it as
3:35 well is a lot of games have loot boxes you've got overwatch where you get a
3:39 bunch of different skins or portraits or whatever shadow of war had some issues
3:43 here as well where it could really help you with your gameplay but i beat on the
3:47 hardest difficulty without using any of them that's not a brag a lot of people
3:50 did this it's not that difficult of a game
3:54 and it's not that big of a deal this is where it became a big problem
3:58 this is a multiplayer game and they directly give you extremely powerful
4:02 advantages against your enemy not just aesthetic skins and stuff like that like
4:06 overwatch no yeah like directly power you are better you do more damage
4:11 you regen more health you have more health you lock onto targets faster you
4:16 don't get locked onto as fast these types of things but surely you can
4:19 achieve those things from just playing the game and not spending money yes but
4:23 it takes a ludicrous amount of time how much time i don't know the exact hours
4:28 but i think someone calculated it as like over six months it's 40 hours to unlock
4:32 a hero but there's other stuff as well like the the hero that's definitely part
4:37 of it and you can't get vader without playing the game for 40 hours which is
4:41 ridiculous because most people aren't going to play the game for 40 hours single player or like just the game the
4:46 the game it's it's how it's balanced is not based on skill which is another
4:50 thing that's pissing people off if you do really really well in a round and you
4:54 kill a ton of people you're not going to get that many more credits than someone
4:57 who just played for the same amount of time that you did okay which is bugging
5:01 a lot of people which sounds like money making business practice yeah because
5:05 you have to pour a huge amount of time in like 40 hours to unlock something
5:08 like a hero the part that bugs me even more than the hero part the hero part is
5:12 just it hits that 40 hour number so it's easily digestible yeah okay um the cards
5:18 you get these different cards that you put on your character to give you different bonuses okay say you're
5:22 playing the spaceship combat mode i'm in a bomber you're in a tie fighter
5:26 i've spent a whole bunch of money on the game just money man tossing it all over
5:30 the place i have something that makes it so that i lock onto targets 200 percent
5:35 faster holy cow also my bombs do increase damage and i move faster you
5:40 don't have any cards you just started the game you just launched up you were
5:44 just fighting another bomber you're in a fighter you were able to get away from
5:48 them and get out you're like sick okay i got this new move i spin and list
5:52 slightly to the left and everything works out great you try to do the same thing against me i lock onto you 200
5:56 faster you can't get out of the way you're dead yeah okay that directly
6:00 strongly affected gameplay based on card advantages now to get to the top there's
6:05 different tiers of these cards as well to get to the top tier of cards you kind
6:09 of have to craft your way up the easiest way to get crafting
6:12 materials is loot boxes the easiest way to craft your tear up to the top card is
6:16 loot boxes people who spend money will be directly better
6:20 at online competitive modes because of this and it's lots of money
6:25 from if i remember correctly if you want to unlock everything like top tier of
6:29 every card and all the heroes it's like 2100 or something that's i'm saying that
6:33 off top of my head i don't remember exactly but is that like even a realistic thing that anyone would want
6:36 to do or realistically that's the thing yes
6:40 it absolutely is if you look into the game industry right now especially the
6:44 mobile side which are the guys that have been doing more of this kind of like
6:47 loot box pay-to-win mechanics it hasn't been in a lot of full-priced games
6:51 because that's ridiculous that's the whole controversy like do you
6:55 think people would be as mad if this game was free to play no pay to win i
6:59 don't think they'd be nearly because you already paid 80 bucks yeah
7:02 so what they're targeting is what's
7:05 called in the gaming industry is wales right it's small amounts of people i
7:10 i've heard people i know pewdiepie and his videos said 10
7:13 i doubt it's anywhere near that high i'm gonna go with one percent or lower of
7:17 players will spend a ludicrous amount of money these are the guys that'll play a
7:20 mobile game and just be like i'm going to spend thousands and
7:24 thousands and thousands of dollars to wreck all of you literally thousands
7:28 i spoke to when i was traveling i met some people from silicon valley who
7:32 worked in the industry and they said they had a very small percentage of users who had spent over a hundred
7:35 thousand dollars just on on that mobile app yep insane absolutely nuts and there
7:41 are definitely lots of people that will spend that twenty one hundred dollars to
7:44 on day one oh have a huge advantage on everyone else
7:49 that also makes it that you might put in cheats like is it really that fun to
7:53 have god mode it's not quite god mode but it is a
7:56 noticeable advantage and the biggest issue for me is it creates a concept in
8:00 the game where when someone kills you you can legitimately
8:04 say that it was because of something that wasn't skill yeah you can you can
8:08 lose be like overpowered that's imba he just spent more money on the game
8:12 that's why he won and you might not be wrong which is ridiculous
8:18 in lots of games where you're like oh that gun's just overpowered the response
8:22 from pretty much everyone else is gonna be like okay then use it yeah or like
8:25 find a way to counter it get good something like that in this game you could be like he just spent more money
8:29 what can i do and that's a legitimate stance and that
8:32 is ridiculous that shouldn't be able to be a legitimate stance but it has been made so by the developers and it's
8:37 ridiculous because of one of the statements that they said in this
8:42 official post which i'm going to jump back to here
8:45 which drives me absolutely insane it drove the entire internet insane and i'm
8:48 sure you've all heard this but where is it
8:52 and you really mean that this is like a record-breaking oh yeah record breaking
8:56 down it says right now negative 20.9 000
8:59 but it's way more than that i don't know what happened it must have been on a
9:02 slope or auto-corrected curve whatever um but i saw it personally at over 600
9:08 000 and i'm sure it was higher than that at some point in time but
9:11 yeah um let's see here we'll continuously adjust our progression
9:15 mechanics to give players a sense of accomplishment as they all as they
9:19 explore all of battlefront 2. that is driven everyone nuts because the sense
9:24 of accomplishment isn't skill
9:27 it's not doing better at the game gives you more credits it's spending more time
9:30 on the game gives you more credits and you can just skip all of that and have a
9:35 sense of freaking accomplishment by paying a whole bunch of money into the
9:39 game and instantaneously being better than everyone removing other people's
9:43 sense of accomplishment by squishing on them with your cash because you bought
9:47 better freaking cards or heroes or whatever the question i have is when you
9:51 come into this as a noob who hasn't spent anything yet and you get absolutely demolished by someone who has
9:57 are you just going to put the game down and not play it anymore or are you going to be motivated to spend they're
10:02 obviously banking on the ladder but what are they going to spend what do you think is actually going to happen for
10:05 people i think it's going to be a little bit of both if if you have this is the
10:09 the frustrating situation you have right here if you have
10:14 a group of friends uh and some people are saying yeah i think it was a
10:17 slightly different quote i don't know if it was from a different post or this one has been edited or what but i think it
10:22 was slightly different anyways um if you have a group of friends that all
10:26 play games together you guys have been playing games together since high school
10:29 or something and two out of six of the
10:33 friends start playing battlefront all right you normally play a game all
10:37 together but these guys want to play battlefront they just bought it then
10:40 maybe one or two more guys buy battlefront because they were playing
10:43 the last two guys are gonna cave because four out of six have it anyways it's
10:47 very easy if a couple people in a group start playing a game that everyone will
10:50 eventually play because everyone just wants to play together and something new and shiny that's great now you're all
10:54 playing together but jim and larry
10:58 don't have as much time they spend more time at work they're
11:01 great gamers they're great in your crew you love having them there but they
11:05 don't have as much time so to make up for the time they're going to spend
11:08 money on the game even though they're great gamers
11:12 they're top and score charts and everything they could normally make up the time by getting more credits and
11:16 just doing better in the game and something like counter-strike it doesn't
11:19 matter at all because they don't care if they don't have the fancy skins they still get the
11:23 same freaking gun yeah something like overwatch it doesn't matter they don't
11:26 care if they don't look as cool they have the same heroes
11:29 everything's fine or even in destiny they just scale it
11:33 they just scale it and in destiny you there's loot boxes sort of bright
11:37 engrams but they just give you aesthetic items and it doesn't really matter these
11:40 are games where you can catch up through skill or catch up because there's
11:46 nothing to catch up on instead of oh i'm going to catch up by
11:49 spending money that is my mechanic to catch up directly i didn't realize there
11:52 was this time issue it's almost completely separate from the money issue
11:56 it's yeah well that's the big problem is
11:59 they kind of work together the money issue almost is like alleviates the time
12:03 issue but that's some sicko that's like
12:07 mechanic though yeah yeah so like the problem i have is because let's take a
12:11 look at my brother my brother works a lot and has crazy work hours because he
12:16 he drives truck for movie production companies so they work to crazy hours of
12:20 the night they work crazy long hours in general and you usually get on for a
12:24 specific show and they want to film that entire show right so for the duration of
12:27 that show you're working not so amount of hours if he wants to play a game like
12:31 this it's very likely that it would make
12:34 logical sense i'm not saying he's going to i'm not saying he's not going to but
12:38 it would make logical sense for him to buy some boxes so he can catch up to the
12:42 rest of us that would be able to play more if we were playing this game
12:46 that makes sense for him the problem is that the game is based around that yeah
12:52 and it is trying to push people to do that if gaming companies start making
12:56 money they'll try to find ways that make more money yeah so the time and money
13:01 thing are mutually reinforcing yeah yeah the thing about that question of like if
13:05 you are more likely to just stop playing versus more likely to spend money in
13:10 order to not get squashed you already have this sunk cost of 80 80
13:16 bucks that's a big issue too and like oh it's free you could walk away yeah oh if
13:20 i just spend 10 more bucks i'll have more fun but then it's gambling which is
13:23 another huge issue so you spend 10 more bucks and maybe you want to play the
13:27 heavy class in the ground war game instead of the space game or whatever
13:30 you want to play let's just go with the heavy class and you don't get any of the
13:34 cards that you want for the heavy class you already spent your 10 bucks it's gone you didn't get any of that because
13:38 of the cards number of loot boxes and the loot boxes are random
13:41 so it's gambling because maybe now you have to spend more you don't know i like
13:45 playing the bomber in the star fighting game thing i played in the beta
13:49 i only want cards for the bomber i play the bomber on both sides i play the tie
13:53 bomber and i play the a wing i if i don't get cards to the bomber i'm
13:56 just gonna want more loot boxes it's gambling
14:00 you can craft cards too yeah and you can craft someone just in the chat just said
14:04 you can craft cards too great people who spend money in the game
14:08 will be able to craft more cards because they'll have more materials from the
14:11 other cards and the more you play the game if i played that spaceship combat
14:15 game for enough time i would eventually want to branch out of just fighting with
14:20 the bomber ship it's not necessarily true for everyone or y-wing sorry it's
14:24 not necessarily true for a-wing's a little fast one sorry
14:27 it's not necessarily true for everybody but a lot of people including myself are
14:31 going to want to branch out then they'll want cards for other things then you're running out of crafting materials then
14:35 it costs 2100 to get all of the cards in the game because now you actually enjoy the game
14:39 because you spend 80 and it's the only game you bought this season maybe
14:43 it's just frustrating because now that it's here they're building the game
14:47 around it that's one thing that i actually defended shadow of war with
14:51 is when playing shadow of war it didn't feel like they had built the game around
14:55 the idea of the loot boxes the loot boxes gave you money they gave you some
15:00 followers but the entire game it's like smashed in your face that there's these
15:05 no not shadow four it's smashed in your face that there are these orcs all over
15:10 the place and you just need to press the one button and it actually ends the
15:13 combat faster if you want to recruit them so like it the game gives you these
15:17 orcs all the time so it's not that big of a deal i didn't mind it that much it
15:21 didn't feel like the game was designed around it battlefront absolutely
15:25 absolutely battlefront 2 feels like it was designed around the idea of the loot
15:29 boxes instead of the other way around which is bad this is very bad so we
15:34 haven't even got to the news portion which is the fact that after a brutal ama where they just made
15:39 everyone even more mad with their question dodging and brutal unsatisfactory answers
15:44 they made another determination which was for now they're just gonna turn off
15:49 all of it all the ability to purchase crystals in in game will now be uh
15:54 completely off it's offline and john told me that actually if you go to the
15:58 the interface where you go to buy these crystals instead of just removing the
16:02 button and not letting you go into that area
16:06 you can click the button and it brings you just like a random janky blank page
16:11 maybe people on the chat can confirm or deny this but that's i haven't seen that
16:15 i don't i don't have it uh someone in the chat said luke won't be streaming
16:18 battlefront 2. technically i will be streaming battlefront 2 i'll be
16:22 streaming battlefront 2 tomorrow it'll just be the original one
16:26 because i'm playing games throughout the years so i don't remember what year the
16:30 original battlefront 2 came out in but i'm playing it for that year so it's
16:33 going to be all pixelated and wonky and fun so and fun
16:39 there's no loot boxes it's great uh 2007 apparently what no
16:46 maybe it's not 2007.
16:49 um so thing to note about them turning off
16:53 this this uh game mechanic for the buying is
16:56 that they didn't remove it they've just turned it off and they say the ability
17:00 to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date once ea has
17:04 made changes to the game so it's funny because the internet seemed to lag here
17:09 a little bit it felt like if you if you pile everyone
17:13 which isn't fair it's not fair i understand if you pile everyone on the
17:16 internet into one little hive mind bubble they read the first part and then about
17:21 an hour or two later read the second part because the whole internet rejoiced
17:25 like we we we did it read it we we won they took microtransactions out
17:30 accomplished and then like starting
17:33 about half an hour to an hour later it started kind of bubbling up and then by
17:36 two hours later it had passed posts about the original
17:40 happiness that oh my goodness they're just putting the microtransactions back
17:44 in the game and they called it the weight whitening
17:48 yeah exactly yeah so like
17:51 it's it's frustrating because this is so transparent
17:55 they're trying to get this huge wave of people that are refunding the game like
17:59 me to
18:03 rebuy it play it long enough that now they're
18:07 invested maybe they have a group of friends that play or i don't know how
18:10 the great game guarantee works on origin i know that i played for zero hours so i
18:15 was or zero minutes zero seconds whatever so i was able to wait until
18:19 that expires i think so but i don't know if that matters i don't know how the
18:23 great game guarantee works but they're trying to they're going to wait until
18:27 people are kind of stuck in it or can't refund it or whatever and then they'll
18:30 put microtransactions back in they'll make their money off their whales and
18:34 they'll move on i'm sure that the micro transactions i'm sure it's going to be
18:37 they're going to adjust it so you don't have to do so much work
18:41 the disparity won't be so huge okay there was a huge issue there as well did
18:45 you hear about this so they reduced the cost of heroes
18:49 but then right reduces the amount of credits that you get that's right
18:52 so they basically just it was the same basically they did two different moves
18:57 that were both two-faced non-moves yeah
19:01 they were like hey we reduced the cost of heroes by the way
19:05 we also reduced the amount of credits you get don't worry about it right and then they're like hey we removed
19:09 microtransactions of the game by the way they're also coming back don't worry
19:12 about it so it was like a hero used to be a grand but you start with a hundred
19:15 bucks now a hero's only a hundred bucks but you start with 10 bucks
19:21 that's what you're saying it's ridiculous yeah essentially so i guess
19:25 this controversy just got so bad that they were actually afraid of losing
19:28 their launch day sales like that up front eighty dollars yeah that was going
19:32 to get so heavily eroded that they're like okay we can't sacrifice that
19:37 and i wonder at some point because like a lot of these moves are so
19:42 dense like a sense of accomplishment when
19:46 you're answering a spawn a a a post
19:49 which its title is it takes 40 hours to unlock a hero
19:54 and you can just buy it like that's so
19:57 obviously not the right way to respond to that i seriously wonder at some
20:02 degree if this isn't just any press is good press
20:06 because now every single gamer definitely knows about battlefront
20:11 every single mom and dad knows battlefront is around no this is too too
20:15 bad too bad too bad usually when companies take that strategy on they
20:20 only alienate people who weren't gonna get their product anyway

21:24 star wars game that has gambling in it and you can say as much as you want like

21:35 shooter games pretty early on grand theft auto was one of the ones that my
21:38 parents were like i played it a little bit like friends
21:42 houses and they knew and they didn't care but like okay like halo i was in
21:45 there pretty early on counter strike i was in there quite early on oh as anything goes and i grew up
21:50 big time and then like the thing is now it's our generation and a little bit
21:54 above that are starting to have well a fair bit above i guess that are starting
21:57 to have kids at these ages that where you're talking about where they might
22:00 watch something like disney xd you think our generation that grew up
22:04 with like shooter games is gonna care too much if someone plays battlefront
22:08 which is like pretty innocent for a shooter game oh yeah like can you
22:13 can you draw people up your lightsaber humans not just i think i think it goes
22:18 through them i don't think they split in half they just like fall over yeah
22:21 because like ever since i was eight i've wanted to be able to just totally
22:24 dismember people with charred remains yeah i'm not sure i could be wrong on
22:28 that so if you can't do that then like that's
22:32 that's vanilla but like i i don't know kids are
22:35 absolutely going to be playing this game it doesn't matter that it's esr b rated
22:39 whatever i don't even know what it is might be m i don't know what they are i
22:43 don't look at them there's no way what is what is the normal rating okay that
22:46 makes sense teen whatever kids are definitely gonna be playing it
22:50 and gambling's in it and like a gambling mechanic that makes
22:54 you better at the game isn't it and that's bad because kids always want to

23:26 topic for a long time but it is pretty important we can get out of it though

23:36 bringing this to local representatives because they're trying to get loot boxes
23:40 and games classified as gambling i do think personally that something needs to
23:46 happen um i'm a little bit worried about how far
23:51 seeing things in games as gambling could go because like randomized loot off of a
23:56 monster that you have to farm by spending more time in the game where a
24:00 game is subscription based might be seen as gambling slippery slope
24:05 uh so it depends where it ends but something needs to happen and loot boxes
24:10 are just horrible so maybe
24:14 contact your local authorities to some degree
24:18 well i can tell you the language that the belgium commission was using so yeah
24:22 the belgian gambling commission is investigating battlefront because of
24:25 loot boxes and what they said was
24:29 loot crates that you purchase without knowing what's inside can be considered
24:33 gambling because your ability to succeed in the game
24:36 is dependent on chance and therefore it's a game of chance and if it's a game
24:39 of chance so if that individual item
24:43 is purchased and it's a random chance that's that's a good way to define it
24:47 because i don't want to screw with like random chance that is inherently built
24:52 within games well i think that the the emphasis here that in my interpretation
24:56 anyway is that your success in the game really depends on it yeah see that
25:01 anyway this is probably not a conversation to bother have on WAN Show
25:04 but that's where like like if you get a legendary item in world of warcraft your
25:09 success in the game could be based around getting that it affects your
25:12 success for sure but like but it's not but it's not a loot crate and it's a
25:17 totally different style of system and blah blah blah blast pretty should be
25:20 pretty easy to divide between i don't think it's actually going to be a problem so

26:36 silicone nose getting a scan of someone's face is going to be
26:41 not that easy what did they have to scan it with they used a handheld um like dedicated
26:46 scanner but they say that in their depth scanner yeah in the future you might be
26:50 able to use one of those just like cell phone ones yeah or even just construct
26:54 the image with with um images like just use images to

27:28 there's a there's a couple things about this
27:32 number one is it's hilarious because at launch apple said that it worked with
27:36 professional mask makers and makeup artists in hollywood to make sure that
27:39 uh masks couldn't be used to hack face id
27:44 and these like random dudes have already done it with something that doesn't look
27:48 all that professional well that's the other thing is
27:51 especially the eyes it's literally just printed out in like his
27:55 face a picture of his face they cut out the eyes from that picture and put it
27:59 onto this like mannequin head that's wild and the reason that's especially
28:02 interesting is because people thought from the patents that apple took
28:07 out that eye movement factored in to face id
28:11 but this would suggest otherwise and if i movement doesn't factor into face id
28:16 then that means that you can use potentially someone who is unconscious
28:20 knocked out or even dead to unlock a phone which is pretty scary even
28:25 even the uh the touch what do they call that touch id ah yeah
28:30 even they're super creative even touch id which apple claims is like an order
28:34 of magnitude less secure yeah face id
28:38 even that one you have it sends like the heat of your thumb so if you'd been dead
28:41 for more than like a couple hours or a day
28:45 they couldn't unlock your phone you could body yeah you can do that slightly
28:48 artificially by like external heating and all this other junk but like it's
28:52 it's not that easy it's a lot harder than just like
28:56 done you know what i mean like it's yeah it's there's always going to be a way to
29:01 get through some form of security nothing is 100 secure but like
29:06 it's kind of sad this has already been done and it's kind of it's interesting
29:10 because cameras on stuff like phones are constantly getting better and
29:14 they're constantly starting to implement things like depth scanning and all this other stuff so we're going to get closer
29:19 and closer progressively to breaking through this being easier and
29:23 easier the security on this gets worse over time unless they're actively
29:27 improving it and it doesn't improve it does improve
29:30 itself as you use it or more and more yeah like i've heard of people um being
29:34 locked out when they put their glasses on and it had when they did the initial
29:38 scan they weren't wearing glasses or their hair wasn't in their face so then it locks you out you enter your code and
29:42 when you enter your code it's like oh the the model that we just took like us
29:47 glasses on we're going to add that to the model now so that's that's just expanding the
29:51 model but it's not necessarily making it more secure like see like the having
29:56 hair in your face and stuff is just annoying i don't i don't want to deal
30:00 with it because it gets in your eyes well no
30:03 good call good call but like like with touch id if i just like with mine it's
30:08 not touch id but i have a fingerprint sensor on the back it doesn't matter what situation i'm in i could be
30:13 completely covered in mud if i just like wipe my finger off real quick and go
30:16 burp i get in my phone yeah well you still got the passcode and that but like
30:21 it's just i don't know but it's pretty sick that like i can't even remember the
30:24 last time you use it that's still an action that you're taking right you're deciding
30:28 granted that it's muscle memory that you do automatically after a while yeah you're still taking an action to unlock
30:32 your phone whereas apple is is pursuing
30:35 a time when you just kind of go like do not no you don't even do that you're
30:39 just like look at like by the time you look at your phone it's unlocked that's
30:43 sick so they're like trying to get there i guess they should be aspiring to that
30:46 that's because that's optimal use case as long as it's secure it's not there
30:50 yet though evidently it's slower than touch id
30:53 which is frustrating fingerprint is pretty insecure though
30:56 yeah it has a lot of issues too it's like 1 in 50 000 or something like that
31:01 yeah it's like i don't know
31:08 a bunch of problems with their methodologies here so the story is absurdly short-sighted
31:14 is there though because some people were saying that it's possible that when they
31:17 registered their face they like had their face obscured or
31:22 something like that or tried to make their face kind of more like the mask so
31:26 that they were more similar yeah but they and there hasn't been there's no
31:31 way to verify that but the researchers did say that they made four other masks
31:36 that didn't work and once those ones failed they
31:40 re-registered re-registered their face on the face id and that after
31:44 registering their face they didn't do any passcode entries to
31:48 update it that's what they say
31:51 yeah i don't know i if if nothing else
31:55 all i really want this to stand for is
31:58 to reinforce that anything can be broken into
32:01 um no one should ever consider anything absolutely secure
32:06 this might be better i don't necessarily think it's easier um when i go to i
32:11 always use my phone when it's in my hand i never go like i'm gonna look at it what's on the table um so Linus does
32:17 that we talked about this once and he was like he hated that the fingerprint things were on the back because he often
32:21 wants to like just unlock it when it's on the table yeah he's told me that i
32:24 don't i don't i just heard a lot of boo hoo hoo
32:30 doesn't apply to me either so like it and it's become a natural part of
32:33 picking up the phone to unlock it by the time you get to it yeah so the
32:37 speed thing doesn't help for me personally and face id is slower ed's
32:42 over there mad because he's an apple user and he just doesn't know what it's like to have that fingerprint reader on

35:03 know it's elon yeah they finally unveiled the semi
35:07 truck yes which i think is pretty ba the question on everyone's
35:12 mind is uh when and where are you to be
35:15 able to make these things given that you're struggling so hard to produce the
35:19 model 3 for the next like two years
35:23 and you're spending a billion dollars per quarter
35:26 on doing that you can't just build another gigafactory apparently they're
35:30 going to start shipping or not shipping they're going to start producing the
35:34 semi truck in 2019 and the new roadster
35:37 which is going to be the fastest car fastest production car by acceleration
35:40 in the world uh that's 20 20. yeah so things could happen before 2020 and
35:46 change that claim but as of right now it
35:49 theoretically is which is really cool there's a lot of
35:53 really awesome things about the truck but there are concerns like you just
35:57 said how are you gonna make this uh i do know their their production lines are
36:01 constantly increasing so
36:04 maybe a theory somewhere says that they'll be able to actually make them
36:09 properly by 2019 maybe one will be made in 2019. are they making two more giga
36:14 factories as well they're they're constantly expanding um so i i can't
36:18 claim to know what is
36:22 gonna happen in terms of their production line um semi truck itself is
36:27 pretty dope though did you check it out it looks cool it looks pretty cool and
36:31 it i've been saying for quite a long time that semi trucks and trucks in general are
36:36 gonna be super important for tesla because trucks things that need huge
36:41 amounts of torque are going to benefit from electric engines a ton now there
36:46 are some issues uh coming from the trucking industry like my my grandfather
36:51 uh his job actually for like basically ever was financing semi trucks for
36:57 people and companies that want to get into trucking so a super important detail is cost per
37:04 kilometer or cost per mile and they talked about that in the stream
37:09 that was a direct callout for companies and financial institutions that finance
37:14 these semi trucks because they're extremely expensive that was a direct
37:17 hey look at us it's going to be easier to get loans because you can throw this
37:21 number which is one of the most important numbers when you're buying a
37:24 truck that is it is cheaper per kilometer you can also throw in numbers
37:28 like the truck is guaranteed for whatever amount of distance if you have
37:32 a breakdown it's some ridiculous number
37:37 if oh yeah yeah what was that if you have a big oh yeah what happened was it
37:40 it's got four separate independent engines and two of them can break down
37:44 and you can still go like 400 miles or something like that
37:47 yeah it's it's not in this document okay by the way speaking of price they
37:51 did not mention an absolute price at all they only mentioned price per mile which
37:56 they put at 20 percent cheaper again it was only relative 20 cheaper than uh
38:02 a comparable diesel truck it includes the cost of the
38:07 they're not just talking about the truck they're talking about like the entire thing like buying it and insurance and
38:11 operating it and maintenance so
38:14 maintenance is going to be a big reason why that number is lower yeah yeah just
38:18 gonna put that out there right now another huge issue only goes 500 miles
38:22 on one charge uh the only there is probably not properly placed someone in
38:27 chat said only most trucking routes are able to be there and back within that
38:30 time and truckers are man mandated to
38:33 take breaks that is a huge deal in
38:37 i know north america i don't know outside of that
38:41 you have to take breaks and that is within the amount of distance that
38:46 you would be able to reasonably travel within one of your brakes easily your
38:49 brake has to be half an hour during the brake it can charge for 500 miles of
38:54 further dis or 400 400 miles of further distance during that break and you'll be
38:57 able to keep going that's not really a major point as long
39:02 as they actually have the i think they're called super charging stations i
39:05 think actually he dropped mega charge mega charger yeah mega charger sounds
39:09 like it's gonna be like a separate kind of network i'm thinking of it kind of
39:13 the same way you drive by a card lock gas station
39:16 oh yeah yeah yeah that's for semis yeah it's gonna have to be like that i
39:19 wouldn't be surprised if it was kind of its own thing so a typical diesel truck
39:23 can go a thousand miles on a full tank do you know how long it takes to fill up
39:27 that tank when you're sitting up i i think he said 15 minutes no no i'm
39:32 talking like a like a normal diesel truck oh it'll take a while to fill that puppy up
39:37 be nice i assume it would take a little while it's going to take longer to charge this truck but one of his points
39:42 was that you don't have to stand there the whole time i guess um it is definitely going to take longer
39:47 to charge it but i don't think there's going to be a bunch of truck drivers
39:51 leaning against their truck while it sips electricity or gulps i guess
39:54 electricity from it from the network uh we also talked about a guaranteed price
40:00 for for semi-trucks uh at seven cents
40:04 per what unit would that be kilowatt i don't
40:07 remember exactly what they used is that also kilowatt
40:11 uh that's not in the document either but he did okay he had a guaranteed price
40:14 which is a big deal also also a big deal in terms of getting uh financial support
40:19 for trucks one big question that i haven't i'm sure okay i haven't seen
40:24 anyone ask it but i am absolutely certain someone has so
40:28 and i haven't looked so that's kind of an issue that i haven't looked for it
40:31 but a big problem is going to be weight they didn't talk about it on the stream
40:36 there's a lot of weighing stations for trucks because roads can only support uh
40:40 a certain amount of weight and the batteries are going to weigh a lot i did
40:43 see this yeah i think i think naked it's it is going to be heavier than
40:48 yeah than a naked normal diesel i think that's
40:52 going to be a big issue there's weighing stations like all over the place
40:56 they did not address that did you see the cockpit design
41:01 yeah so it's 500 miles with 32.2 tons of cargo so at max capacity is that the
41:07 heaviest class he a lot of the stats he gave out were
41:10 for the heaviest class of truck like the speed and the uh the range and
41:14 everything so the lack of engine might compensate for
41:18 that yeah but like if you look at the model s
41:22 it's actually a pretty heavy car because the battery and all that other
41:26 stuff you have to do more than look at it you probably have to try to lift it
41:29 apparently way stations are for trailer load and balance not total load oh
41:35 okay we have some really we just got everyone all kinds in there now someone
41:38 said way stations over total weight who knows i just it wasn't addressed in the
41:43 stream and it made me worry a little bit but this will be huge another big thing
41:47 that they brought up was convoy mode this isn't the first time we've seen
41:50 convoy mode um i've been in a car that was doing convoy mode before uh i've
41:55 been in a convoy
41:59 but essentially the cost per miler per
42:03 kilometer goes down drastically when you have these trucks in convoy mode i
42:07 believe i don't think he went over it in exhaustive detail but i believe because
42:11 they talk to each other and they can run really closely together drafting very
42:15 efficiently okay so i didn't i didn't hear this from the stream last night but
42:19 it was in the article i read today okay they said that in convo the reason
42:23 convoy mode is so much cheaper in fact
42:26 musk said it was cheaper than rail yes it was because but he didn't show the
42:31 rail number you only need a driver in the front truck
42:35 okay yes that's a thing is that they well they
42:38 even showed it in the animation there was a person in the front truck there's no people in there okay once following
42:42 it that was a very important note that's crazy
42:46 but is that so did they bake in the cost of the driver definitely they must have
42:51 otherwise that doesn't matter so but i mean in the in the initial
42:56 tesla semi versus diesel semi comparison
42:59 oh it cost the driver no no i don't think so because in the second number
43:03 when he said in convoy mode he was comparing those against the other ones
43:07 not against train and he said it was like 80 cents or something
43:11 i would think that at that comparison i mean like it's a company they're gonna
43:14 make their numbers look as good as they can i would assume that they'd be like
43:18 yeah but it's like you know two-thirds cheaper because there's only
43:21 one driver involved and that is that is a realistic
43:25 consideration if you're well yeah um
43:29 mostly i think i i wonder how they're going to accomplish this because convoy
43:34 mode makes sense for highways which is what they showed it on
43:38 it's the second thing you get to us exactly you're not gonna be you're not gonna be able to convoy for the entire
43:42 trip yeah you're gonna have to turn off what do you do for the rest of the
43:47 drivers well they are getting their enhanced auto i i miss this maybe twitch chat
43:52 knows what's going on enhanced autopilot's there definitely all of them
43:55 yeah and uh if this is like one to two years out
43:59 maybe it'll be even better by then then elon did not
44:04 did not avoid talking about autopilot he brought it up directly in the stream

44:57 and he told me as a person who's never driven a tesla he said actually you
45:01 can't really coast where the crap when the regenerative breaks on it slows you
45:04 down like pretty fast yeah um but the upside of that is you like barely ever

58:20 cheaper laptops i don't know if necessarily right now but at least when i worked in retail that sold with AMD

60:34 over twice as fast as the firefox from just six months ago
60:38 built on a completely overhauled core engine and boasting a stylish new design
60:43 dub photon ui which streamlines a number of elements included in previous
60:48 releases so i'm not gonna lie
60:51 this marketing kicked a lot of people off and for
60:54 reasons that i understand do they show it here
61:00 somewhere they showed like two times faster and then they show a comparison
61:06 of firefox quantum versus the most recent version of chrome
61:10 so people don't realize that they were talking about a previous version of
61:14 firefox uh okay
61:18 because they show two times faster in big bold text
61:21 and then directly beside it a comparison of quantum versus chrome right when
61:25 they're meaning two times faster than the previous version their own product
61:29 they do say quantum is faster to load a number of popular websites
61:33 than chrome is yeah uh including wikipedia bing no one cares
61:38 tumblr and shutterstock no one cares
61:42 firefox uses around 30 less memory than
61:45 chrome edge and safari on Windows
61:48 so there's there's some things going on here one thing that i did appreciate is
61:52 that in their own testing in their own video showing load time comparisons
61:56 between quantum and chrome um
62:00 it shows quantum winning quite often not by two
62:04 times and someone in the chat says in fairness in the comparison video it
62:08 shows fairly equivalent speeds if i remember correctly quantum wins
62:13 usually and i'm sure they cherry picked sites to a certain degree um but i know
62:18 at least one point in time the chrome browser did beat the quantum in their
62:22 own video and they included it in their own video that's cool i thought that was pretty cool so it was a weird like

62:30 super misleading marketing it was like
62:35 what uh so like if anyone actually watched the video at all they would have
62:40 known something was up but yeah it's been a delight to use it so far i think

65:39 deeply in i have it on my work computer i have it on my home computer now you're fully entangled it's on my phone
