0:00 pymax then so these guys are actually a pretty new company based out of china
0:04 and they are making some very bold claims
0:07 so they boast that their vr headset i've got a
0:12 prototype of it right here delivers dramatically better field of view and
0:17 resolution compared to competing solutions from big name companies like
0:21 oculus and htc and they actually flew
0:24 all the way out to my studio here in vancouver to have me try it but my bs
0:30 detector started going off pretty hardcore when i realized that they were
0:35 calling the two 4k displays one for each
0:39 eye 8k that is at best a little misleading
0:44 but i mean i'm already in at work on my
0:47 sunday due to some scheduling challenges so
0:51 what the hey why don't we check it out
0:54 my weekend trip to the office by the way is brought to you by tunnelbear the
0:58 simple vpn that makes it easy to privately and securely browse a more
1:02 open internet try tunnelbear for free at the link below that's tunnelbear.com LTT
1:19 well this bag broke okay
1:23 i guess we don't get another shot at this then um
1:28 so right here in my hands i've got what they're calling emphasis on their
1:32 calling because i don't necessarily agree what they're calling the pimax 8
1:38 k the resolution that it's running at here
1:42 is 3840 by 2160 per
1:46 eye so in order to achieve that
1:49 well they had to put some pretty different hardware in here although
1:53 there's really not much point um showing it to you because the finished version
1:59 of the pi max 8k is actually going to have one usb 3 this one has a usb 3 and
2:04 a usb 2 and it's going to have a single displayport 1.4
2:08 this guy is using dual hdmis and then because we're using a laptop for the
2:13 demo uh an HDMI to mini DisplayPort
2:16 adapter to drive the displays while the displays themselves run at
2:21 3840x2160 the way that we're actually driving this
2:26 is with two 2560x1440
2:30 signals that are being upscaled if you
2:33 want to run them at native resolution you are actually going to need a higher
2:38 end product called the pimax 8k x
2:42 and you're going to need a pretty banging computer because running two
2:45 displays at 4k is not exactly straightforward especially if you factor
2:51 in that they gotta run at 90 hertz if you
2:54 want the kind of fluidity that well you're gonna want if you are
2:59 playing games in vr now size-wise this thing is really big
3:04 it's like kinda chunky looking but the good news is that when you're gaming in
3:08 vr you're obviously not looking at yourself so all that really means is
3:11 that your your wife or your boyfriend or whoever's watching you play vr gets to
3:15 watch you look like even more of an idiot but weight wise it's actually not bad
3:20 you still got that tether drag but the distribution of weight is
3:25 actually pretty solid i got to give them credit for that
3:29 now tracking is handled with these laser trackers along the outside right now
3:33 they don't look like anything special but this is pretty early going
3:37 and this is pretty cool so they're gonna ship they have a complete kit that ships
3:41 with lighthouses but if you already have an htc vive you can actually use your
3:46 existing htc lighthouses and just plug
3:50 and play and then that's also true
3:54 of any vive controllers so those are
3:57 intercompatible with a pimax headset whether you go with the 8k the 8k x or
4:02 the lower end 5k now that's not to say that they don't
4:05 strive to build their own controller so this
4:09 is actually a prototype version of their controller it seems to bear a lot of
4:14 resemblance to the htc controller but check this out
4:19 somebody dropped it at an earlier demo this whole thing has been fairly well
4:23 used so hey intercompatibility is still pretty cool the the rep was able to run
4:28 to the store buy a couple of these and then bring them over here for the demo
4:32 so experience wise because it uses the lighthouses you can do a seated vr
4:37 experience or you can do a room scale vr experience the maximum distance is about
4:43 the same as the vive so you can do a play area about
4:46 well this big i think it's a five meter
4:50 distance uh between the two lighthouses
4:54 brutally i can't say i'm too disappointed that i'm going to be using vive controllers today um
5:00 this is a prototype but they've got a lot of work to do here
5:04 so this touch pad has to be matte there's no way that they
5:08 they can ship it with a glossy surface like this and the tactility of the
5:12 buttons i'll give them credit it's lighter than the vive controller so
5:16 that's good but the tactile feel of the buttons has a long way to go especially
5:20 this trigger down here so hopefully these are all things they can
5:24 get resolved one bonus though is hey type c charging so that's good this is
5:29 what they're planning to ship but i would consider this to be kind of the base model because part of their whole
5:34 concept is having a modular design for this product so you could add like
5:39 a scent module you could add support for prescription built-in lenses
5:44 um you could add freaking what else they got they're
5:48 claiming that they can do wireless transmission though they sure as heck
5:52 won't be doing that at full resolution um there's there's a cooling fan module
5:57 planned apparently that would be pretty trippy oh and there
6:02 it is it is it's running
6:06 oh no they weren't kidding about the field of view it's all the way from
6:10 about i mean i can't see what i'm doing but from about here to about here
6:15 and then from like here to here and we've got another hilariously
6:21 yes this thing is definitely a prototype in case you were wondering
6:26 revelation here um the controllers are not running
6:30 wirelessly yet that will happen this is only prototype
6:35 two i think out of like i think they're gonna do they're
6:38 planning four prototypes at least before they actually deliver this thing
6:43 feel like uh freaking you know
6:47 i don't know i don't watch movies so i have a hard
6:50 time doing like movie references okay yes i know i'm mirroring the
6:54 display i'm gonna try and get away with it steamvr give me a break here
6:59 okay so man this is going to be hard to
7:03 to not walk too far uh
7:07 okay i think i need to adjust my inter-pupillary distance here because
7:12 this is clearly not correct
7:18 it's clear that they have some work to do
7:21 with respect to making the flat displays
7:26 appear a little bit more natural as you move your head around
7:31 so right now there's a little bit of waviness
7:34 as you look from one side to another
7:38 there's a little bit of distortion and it is a little bit motion sickness
7:43 inducing but clearly they're not done yet and i
7:46 will say text is incredibly readable
7:51 compared to anything that i have tried before
7:54 all right so let's let's fire up a game shall we why don't
7:58 we do my first vr game
8:03 space pirate trainer
8:06 so this is what i initially set up my first time trying vr
8:11 in my uh in my computer room upstairs
8:14 the night before i had to bring the htc vive back to the office for luke to do
8:18 his review this was the game that i played when i set it up in my office
8:21 upstairs
8:26 oh that's my oh wow i've never seen this enemy before
8:29 what the heck so what it's like armored until it's like not armored or something or well
8:34 okay oh come on now
8:37 now i just want the high score on this uh setup here
8:41 so that everybody whoever does this demo can know
8:45 that i was better than them all right so i'm dead so initial impressions um i'm gonna try
8:50 it again in a minute without that secondary screen running because i know that that can
8:55 affect performance but what i will say right now is that
8:59 they have got some um
9:03 they have some motion tracking responsiveness stuff
9:07 to address because as someone who can comfortably play vr for over an hour
9:12 in games like hollow point running around jumping
9:15 i've been in for about five minutes so far and i'm already feeling nauseated
9:21 they're saying that they're planning to ship units early next year
9:25 i don't think they're going to hit that target and if they don't hit that target i don't necessarily think that's a bad
9:29 thing because i would rather that they spend a little bit more time on that
9:34 with that said they're moving in the right direction
9:39 in some ways the increased field of view
9:42 and the increased pixel density makes
9:46 for a very different experience i was pretty skeptical about 2560 by 1440
9:52 upscaled to 4k and for text i don't know
9:55 what the people talking about how you could use this at
9:58 the desktop or talking about like it's clearer but it's obviously upscaled so
10:03 for text i wouldn't recommend the non-x version or i just get the 5k and run
10:08 that at 5k natively but in games
10:12 there is virtually no screen door effect so they're using what they're calling a
10:17 c l p l display and i don't remember
10:21 what the clp stands for but the l at the end is liquid um and they're saying that
10:26 it's competitive with OLED in terms of the
10:30 pixel response times so that the smearing that you'll see in the image as
10:34 you move from side to side it is not and i don't know i don't know why they would
10:39 say that it's a very um
10:42 it's a very strange thing to say because
10:45 it's common knowledge that an OLED responds instantly while the best you
10:50 can do gray to gray with an lcd is
10:53 multiple milliseconds
10:57 with that said it is better than i thought it would be but right now it's
11:00 hard for me to say how much of the motion sickness is from that and how
11:03 much of it is from the actual motion delay when i'm moving around or moving
11:08 my hands now they told me that they haven't validated space pirate trainer
11:12 so the next game i'm going to try is one that i've spent a lot of time with and
11:15 one that they actually suggested and that is the lab
11:20 so here in longbow definitely enjoying the increased
11:24 peripheral vision so like
11:27 facing this way looking at the gate i can clearly see guys coming down the
11:32 steps towards the right approach also in a brightly colored scene like this i'm
11:37 not noticing any difference in pixel response times
11:41 to nearly the same degree that i did when i was in space pirate trainer where
11:45 everything that you're looking at is brightly colored objects on a black
11:48 backdrop which is typically a more difficult scenario
11:54 so i think i've narrowed down
11:59 where most of the motion sickness is coming from
12:03 um it seems to be mostly to do
12:06 with the slight distortion effect of the display because ultimately you're
12:10 looking at a flat display through a lens that is stretching it out into your
12:14 peripheral vision but it seems to be coming from the way
12:18 that the image distorts as i move around particularly when i look up and down
12:23 now they tell me
12:27 that the next version is going to have an updated lens
12:32 so i'm hoping that they can resolve everything that i'm experiencing today
12:37 but like anything that you'd be backing
12:40 on kickstarter based on an early prototype you can't take for granted that
12:46 anything will be any better than it was when they were initially pitching it
12:50 i will say this though again the field of view is incredible like i
12:56 actually feel like i'm standing in a plaza
13:00 instead of feeling like i'm looking at
13:03 a three-dimensional plaza that's like threw a pair of binoculars in front of
13:07 me and that effect is really cool
13:11 so impressions wise guys remember this is based on a
13:16 pre-production unit so take it for what it is right now they're asking for
13:22 4.99 for a pi max bare bones on their
13:26 kickstarter campaign so by bare bones i mean it is just the headset and they
13:30 assume that you already own vive controllers and vive lighthouses that
13:34 you'll continue to use then if you want the full package it's
13:38 eight hundred dollars for this one with the whole kit or a thousand dollars for
13:43 the pi max 8k x although that one is actually sold out at this time right now
13:50 even though that is actually quite a bit cheaper than the htc vive the rift at
13:56 400 bucks with sensors and with touch controllers
14:01 included is a more seamless experience for sure
14:05 with that said now that i've experienced what a next-gen resolution display is
14:10 like in vr i would have a very hard time recommending that you buy a current gen
14:15 vr experience because the increased immersion from the wider field of view
14:20 and the higher pixel density makes an enormous
14:24 difference and this was a pretty cool experience
14:28 even if i do feel a little nauseated right now i wish them the best of luck
14:32 on the next couple of iterations because i can see they're headed towards
14:36 something pretty cool here and on the subject of being headed
14:39 towards something pretty cool whether your device is a vr headset or a
14:43 phone or a computer ifixit can help you take it from broken
14:48 back to something cool they've got thousands of guides for how to take
14:52 apart and repair your devices and they've got their award-winning lineup
14:57 of tools who did they win awards from you might ask well me because i actually bought my
15:02 first ifixit kit before they ever reached out to us about being a sponsor
15:06 and i awarded it still useful to this day
15:09 four plus years later it's freaking awesome and the new one their protech
15:14 tool kit is only 60 bucks now with their 64-bit driver kit their suction cups
15:18 their pry tools pretty much everything you need including esd-safe tweezers and
15:22 an esd strap to fix your devices so why pay someone to fix your stuff for you
15:27 when you can get all the tools that you need for less than you'd probably pay
15:31 and then you're equipped for any job moving forward so head over to
15:35 ifixit.com Linus and go check it out the pro tech toolkit 60 bucks go buy one you
15:40 won't regret it also it's like october november by the time you're watching
15:44 this it's a great gift idea so thanks for watching guys if you
15:48 dislike this video you can hit that button but if you liked it hit like get subscribed maybe consider checking out
15:52 where to buy the stuff we featured at the link in the video description also
15:56 down there is our merch store which has a oop
