0:01 okay guys welcome to the WAN Show hopefully there are no technical
0:04 difficulties today because we're live without doing a test
0:09 stream I love how twitch didn't tell their biggest partner that they now have
0:14 YouTube integration thanks
0:19 guys yeah yeah oh right right I thought you meant their biggest partner in
0:23 general but you mean in terms of their uh their YouTube their Network their
0:26 YouTube Network their biggest YouTube Network didn't know that now have
0:30 YouTube integration with twitch Yeah well
0:34 yeah I think they're uh I think they've
0:37 got you know other things to deal with you know I don't feel too bad about it
0:42 anyway guys welcome to the W show we've
0:45 got a fantastic show planned for you today as we always do every show is
0:51 great uh the part that I lied about was the planning I don't even have the
0:54 document up on my computer yet you tell them about the show we have um just
1:00 general disent for Ubisoft disent I said
1:03 the wrong word we're just going to invent words because there are no words
1:07 for how disatisfied we are there we go with how Ubisoft is treating PC Gamers
1:12 disent I'm full of disent um they're full of
1:16 disent their dis intentions are discombobulating my dentry
1:22 and taking real words we just got dissed
1:25 surrounding them with fake ones um and EA might not suck as much anymore but
1:30 they haven't made that an actionable item yet so haven't made an what are you
1:35 even talking about they haven't done anything with it they're just like yeah
1:38 they're like they're doing they're pulling the Microsoft thing they're pulling the Microsoft thing we're going
1:41 to support PC gaming sometime but EA's never actually
1:46 gone that far before so this is still a step in the right direction that's true
1:50 usually they're just like screw you guys at least they're paying lip service to
1:54 the PC gaming Community this is true this is true T-Mobile test drive ripped
1:58 off a line of te tips ideas and we'll be allowing people to something something
2:01 tell you later um almost went a little bit too far and
2:07 we now have a new beta for the front page of lines.com which you can check
2:11 out it's sort of badass it's like sort of the best thing ever it was designed
2:15 by me coded by me and all the Articles were written by me the lies just got
2:21 bigger and bigger didn't if catman's
2:24 watching he's just going to be like what
2:30 are you kidding me you mean that guy that was just constantly like I don't
2:33 like it make it go away he gets the credit for everything really no and that
2:38 my friend is how Corporate America Works kind of
2:43 yeah okay any no but seriously huge big UPS to Catman for being a cat and a man
2:50 it's like anyway we'll talk more about that later but for now intro time
3:13 this thing works a little bit differently this week so if I bung it up
3:17 don't be surprised so they just sit there and
3:20 then check this out I I swear I'm going to like hit edel because look at see how
3:25 the background changes like way to go guy winner anyway the point is that our
3:31 first sponsor today is Squarespace get 10% off with offer code Linus and stay
3:34 tuned because later on in this very video we will be giving away a year
3:40 worth of Squarespace service bam and the
3:44 twitch chat just brought down and the twitch chat just brought
3:49 here to go guys also sponsoring the
3:52 event this week are all the sponsors of Highlander so this is Aus with their Rog
3:59 series notebooks Intel with their core i7 high performance CPUs and Corsair
4:05 makers of the ever popular well we can't call it popular if it doesn't really
4:09 exist yet but it's going to be popular it can be popular if it doesn't exist
4:12 k70 RGB keyboards yeah I've never seen actual physical proof that Justin Bieber
4:16 exists but he's popular and he's popular well depending who you ask and finally
4:22 we have an upcoming live stream it's going to be an ask the expert live
4:26 stream it's coming next week you guys are going to want to tune into that to
4:30 get some pretty sweet behindth scenes details about how their Devil's Canyon
4:35 CPUs came to be and a hint word for the
4:40 word to the wise uh we may or may not be giving away a couple of Devil's Canyon
4:44 CPUs on a for mention
4:47 stream are you genuinely like surprised
4:51 or are you doing like the good co-host this guy is crazy I actually I okay
4:55 that's amazing you guys should be interested in what he's saying
5:00 oh my God one I didn't know this was
5:03 happening until like five minutes ago when you were like oh my God where's the
5:07 image and I was like apparently we need an image for this thing which may or may
5:12 not be a thing and then now we're giving away processors on it that's right
5:16 that's cool like I this is legitimate like I actually had literally no idea we
5:21 make snap decisions speaking of making SN you
5:25 giving away mine your what the the ones that I've been testing with okay cool
5:30 yeah don't worry it's all good I like those ones we got new we got new ones
5:34 okay so I have the wrong document up still so you're on point oh no here we
5:39 go all right so the headline this week
5:43 all the fail Ubisoft could you have shot yourselves
5:48 in the foot any better if you tried do
5:51 you want to do you want to go through this while I I I'll manage what they're
5:55 looking at on my screen here okay sure sure I I don't I don't understand how
5:59 people haven't figured it out yet that one like don't lie to PC Gamers gamers
6:05 in general but don't lie to PC Gamers they're gonna like Gabe has a quote like
6:10 really really good quote about like yeah don't lie to the internet because
6:14 they'll figure it out they'll plaster it everywhere and they'll never ever forget
6:18 about it and it's just like what are you doing so so basically it all started on
6:24 a misty day fog covered day with great
6:27 headlight effects back in 201
6:31 2012 all all the Fanboys were excited
6:35 about Watch Dogs with its amazing graphical Fidelity being showcased on
6:40 the PC they they they dreamt of nights in
6:44 future days when they could spend time night and Future Days you can listen to
6:48 yourself when they spend time reacting
6:51 to the light effects of lens flare of AFF mentioned Watchdogs and the depth of
6:56 field and then Watchdogs launched here in 2014 total poo well total poo is
7:03 unfair it looked like but what we can say is that it didn't look as good as
7:07 Far Cry 3 which which is a Ubisoft title
7:11 and old and not new so talk about this
7:14 neoaf article that I've had sitting on my screen for a bit here what is this
7:18 okay so two different modders CAD zate 24 and the worse um I'm more familiar
7:24 with the the worse have released mods which unlock original Graphics effects
7:29 to do this they they had to it's a lot harder than I'm going to explain right
7:33 now but effectively they just turned things on they had to find them which
7:37 was extremely difficult they had to gain access to them which was extremely
7:40 difficult and all that kind of stuff but essentially it's already there they just
7:44 had to turn it on which is fantastically
7:47 amazing and horrible at the same time uh it it turns on tons and tons of
7:53 different effects like uh St St I I love
7:58 how Ubisoft I'm going to go into UB response Ubisoft response is classic so
8:02 this is really long but it goes the dev team is completely dedicated to getting
8:05 the most out of each platform so the notion that we you haven't you haven't
8:08 talked about the stuff yet hold but I want to I want to talk show this and
8:12 then show the improvements because they contradict themselves a little bit
8:15 stressing me out okay so we want to get the most out of each platform whatever
8:19 the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we've set out to achieve we
8:24 test and optimize our games for each platform on which they released
8:27 strivings for the best quality POS possible I'm mixing this up a little bit
8:31 the PC version does indeed contain some old unused render settings that were
8:35 deactivated for V variety of reasons including possible impacts on visual
8:39 Fidelity stability performance and overall gameplay then it goes on to some
8:44 long stuff after that but I just wanted to show the like we deactivated it
8:47 because of stability and stuff in the patch notes for the mods and in a lot of
8:53 the reports that I've been reading from people that have tried these mods also known as pretty much all of them it's it
8:59 runs smoother it's faster it's just as
9:02 or more stable and looks way better because they've done things like uh
9:07 allowing E3 2012 Bloom which is a setting ridiculous um performance
9:13 improvements enabled headlight Shadows LED changes reflection changes added
9:17 three new camera changes like closer normal further to give credit where
9:21 credit is due this is total biscuits 25 minute rant on how ridiculous this is
9:26 where he figures the only two conclusions uh for why Ubisoft might
9:31 have turned off all of these settings cuz he's sitting here playing the game
9:35 with everything turned on getting about the same performance that he was without
9:39 all this stuff turned on when the theory you know in your mind is that more
9:44 graphical Fidelity is supposed to make the game Run worse unless they're intentionally handicapping it so he
9:48 comes up with two conclusions number one is gross incompetence and number two is
9:54 that they're liars and those are basically the only ones that I can come
9:58 up with too so anyway keep I'm just going to let them watch Total biscuit play this game cuz he's a good guy and
10:03 this is a this is a pretty good video about how stupid this whole situation is
10:07 yeah so they added all that stuff they also added stuff like lens flare lighting changes civilian
10:11 density tons of stuff and there's even more stuff coming on the way that
10:15 they're planning to improve and because they've broken into it this far I expect
10:19 actual full mods to come out at some point which aren't just turning things
10:22 on which like this is still Absolut I'm not I'm not trying to downgrade what Cad
10:26 zate and the worse are doing I'm just saying uh it could be different from
10:29 there um then people started freaking
10:33 out because there was a softpedia article with a quote from Ubisoft
10:37 talking about Far Cry 4 saying that Far Cry 4 on PC at maximum settings will
10:43 look the same as it does on consoles so and their claim here so
10:49 their their BS claim is oh yeah yeah
10:52 well we we deved it on the PC and then we just we just like plugged that code
10:57 into the the the current gen new consoles and it like ran so amazing that
11:02 everyone's going to have the best experience regardless of what is that as
11:08 stunning as next gen console games are starting to look no wait no that's
11:11 Forbes right so even out of the box even
11:14 day one we just stuck the code on the new consoles and we were able to dial it
11:17 all the way up so as a console player you're already getting by far the best
11:22 version we can
11:25 ship can ship also known as they went through and scrubbed their Co this time
11:30 took out everything that mentioned anything about PC turned like instead of
11:33 just turning settings off completely removed them and then went yeah that's
11:37 what you're getting so to make matters worse I don't know if this is actually
11:41 in your notes but the word on the street is that the Watchdog performance patch
11:45 that was supposed to come at the beginning of this month uh is going to
11:49 disable the hack no I had never heard of that yeah
11:55 really so basically Ubisoft just keeps
11:59 on digging is that is that actually like a
12:03 really good source that that's for I'm going to have to double check I'll tell
12:06 you what I will double check right now um but okay I can go into the rest of
12:10 what ubisoft's response was um
12:14 so modders are usually creative and passionate players and while we
12:18 appreciate their enthusiasm the mod in question which uses those old settings
12:22 subjectively enhances the game's visual Fidelity in certain situations but also
12:27 can have various negative impacts never seen any of those there's a little bit
12:30 of headlight flicker that total biscuit noticed oh no he he's even said it
12:35 wasn't a big deal and yeah yeah if there's someone who's going to criticize
12:39 like graphical Fidelity it's going to be total biscuit it'll be total biscuit so
12:43 there's that um those could range from uh performance
12:48 issues nope uh to difficulty in reading
12:51 the environment nope uh to potentially
12:55 making the game less enjoyable or even unstable nope and no no so nothing that
13:00 they've claimed has actually been like perceived by anyone so what they're
13:05 trying to save people from doesn't exist and that's
13:10 frustrating then jumping over to the Far Cry 4 thing apparently the softpedia
13:14 article um is is not a very good article because
13:19 of misquoting and other kind of stuff like that so if you ignore that the
13:23 Ubisoft Montreal Creator that's that's when they start saying like oh we just
13:26 dialed everything up and it looked amazing um
13:29 um that makes me not necessarily think that the softpedia article was even
13:33 necessarily A misquote I think it was just in the way that they used that I
13:38 guess that's technically misquoting but it's like it's it's still the truth just
13:43 because they quoted it kind of in a weird way doesn't necessarily mean it's
13:47 wrong because they are there's no way you're just like oh yeah we deved
13:51 everything on PC didn't taste anything on consoles ever and then plugged it in
13:55 and it just everything went to Max that's not that's not how that works I
13:59 got to wonder how the devs feel you know
14:02 the ones that actually care about delivering the best product that they
14:05 possibly can that like group of Hardcore guys which are actually super badass and
14:09 made all the settings and stuff for Watch Dogs and then just had them all turned off yeah that's got to suck and
14:14 you got to you got to wonder and they're probably under some sort of agreement so
14:18 they can't say you got to wonder how intentionally gimped the performance
14:23 is then if they were able to enable all that stuff and have it run basically the
14:28 same um I just I just yeah I don't know I've
14:33 had people message me telling me that we shouldn't do benchmarking videos early
14:37 well that's the only way to get views it's one of those things where should
14:41 you review a game early or should you wait till the first patch well if you
14:45 review the game right out of the gate then people will watch your video and if
14:48 you review after the first patch you might have a better gaming experience but but at the same time ship your game
14:53 properly yeah like release your game so that it's
14:57 playable if if we if if we review performance of your game right out of
15:00 the gate that'll give people the benefit when your game performs really well at
15:05 out right out of the gate how it should of having a very good performance review
15:09 from us okay here we go so the mod still works you just have to unpack the files
15:14 and then repack them with the new patch. datat okay so the worst mod still works
15:19 but the patch does disable it and also apparently doesn't fix the stuttering
15:24 issue while driving
15:27 so thanks guys you just made it slightly more
15:31 annoying for no reason yay luckily that's still way
15:36 easier than modding things like it used to be so I don't know that's yeah yeah I
15:40 guess this makes the moding community's job in general easier like imagine how
15:43 quickly they could do those GTA mods if the developer just did all the work and
15:48 someone just had to dig around in the turn it
15:51 on it's kind of like how overclocking has gotten so much easier over the last
15:55 few years you just press the OC button it's going to be like just press the
15:59 like mod button oh yeah these are the PC settings
16:04 we didn't turn on there you go they
16:07 should just be on the launcher there should be like a this is made for PC but
16:11 if you actually want to play it as if you own a PC make sure you click this
16:14 button before you load the game it's just like Okay click thanks fantastic so
16:20 yeah everyone hates Ubie and then there's a bunch of stuff that's been
16:23 going around that didn't get coted up here for some reason but I still have it
16:26 down in the bottom uh where's that TW Twitter thing ubby Tessa oh this is epic
16:33 okay hold on let me let me bring this up because I mean their their PR department
16:39 in their defense I can't imagine that
16:42 they know what to do or what to say at this point but this wasn't
16:47 it yeah so I I was worried that it was edited and then I noticed the picture
16:51 was different so I freaked out a little bit but it looks like it's the same okay
16:54 so here's a tweet from Below in a tweet
16:57 a couple months ago you said watch Do's Graphics were not downgraded do you
17:01 still hold this to be true I recall replying saying that the game was not
17:05 downgraded I still stick to that yes
17:09 wow yikes it's like yeah Tessa this is from
17:14 Ryan Tessa you might want to put your uh foot in your mouth here I don't think
17:18 that that's actually what putting your foot in your mouth means Ryan you did very well though um but basically you
17:23 guys are all over the front page of Reddit I don't envy your PR team right
17:27 now I'm surprised they didn't get them to turn it off to be H I'm surprised
17:32 that they issued a statement at all I'm surprised that they didn't just wait
17:36 quietly for this to be swept under the rug where the hardcores were going to
17:40 remember it and mostly people would forget unfortunately they've added so
17:44 much to the fuel to the fire that again I'm going to bring up total biscuit uh
17:48 but check this out WTF is Watchdogs so the Watchdogs review 850,000 views from
17:54 3 weeks ago the was watchdogs on PC
17:57 handicapped on purpose video from 3 days ago
18:01 520,000 views they are letting this spin out of
18:06 control and they are adding fuel to the fire by denying it publicly instead of
18:12 just addressing it and promising to the
18:15 community to issue an official patch that turns everything back on there
18:20 is no way to fix this at this point other than shut up and that doesn't
18:25 really fix it because lots of people will still be mad or go just go fullon
18:31 look our bad we're sorry which you know
18:34 what that probably would have worked that would have definitely honestly The
18:37 Gaming Community like if you if you shake their hand and Pat them on the
18:41 back a little bit they're usually cool yeah they'll get super pissed and they
18:45 will literally try to murder you but if you're like be
18:49 friendsit there's been attempts well okay um there's there's this quote by
18:54 Sebastian viard I hope I'm saying that correctly Watch Dogs can use three plus
18:58 G of RAM on N NG consoles for graphics
19:02 your PC GPU needs enough vram for Ultra options due to the lack of unified
19:06 memory who is this Sebastian vard oh
19:10 excellent it's like okay then where's
19:13 the I don't know exactly where it is but I just wanted to bring up uh the there
19:19 it is G in okay can you show me where
19:22 that is cuz it's not actually helpful for you to bring things up on your
19:25 screen no it's here that's when I'm highlighting it
19:29 okay there we go so here's the here's the quote from gay Ben here's a little
19:33 quote that everyone in the gaming industry needs to
19:37 remember yeah don't ever ever try to lie
19:40 to the internet because they will catch you they will deconstruct your spin they
19:44 will remember everything you say for eternity it's like yeah yeah they will
19:51 so changing gears um EA has actually
19:54 done a couple of things this week that are looking pretty positive so the
19:59 original poster online tech tips.com is RI or Rafi or Rafi or anyway um and EA
20:08 says they have plans for how they intend to change the way they make games so the
20:13 original article here is from pcgamer.com and this is right from the
20:17 CEO although based on some of Ubisoft
20:20 CEO's statements about the whole Watch Dogs Far Cry 4 nonsense um I don't know
20:26 does does a CEO have more credibility than a
20:30 PR I don't know is he just glorified PR
20:34 hard to say so last year EA was voted worst company in America I think that
20:38 was wasn't that two years ago anyway the point is yeah it's happened a couple of
20:42 times so CEO Andrew Wilson says the new mandate at EA is to ensure its games are
20:47 functional and fun at a much earlier stage in the process than it has in the
20:51 past they want to be more rigorous about ensuring quality control throughout the
20:55 process and they want to be willing to delay A Game's launch when it's
21:00 necessary we have now said that there is
21:03 no alternative if the build is not playable you have to push the schedule
21:07 until it's playable again that's great um another an example
21:13 of this sort of new approach is the beta for the battlefield hard for Battlefield
21:18 Hardline that went live earlier this month and they're saying that they want
21:22 to do earlier betas to get real play testing done at an earlier point in the
21:27 process so that when they game does actually ship they are able to deliver a
21:31 much more polished experience the whole he he says the Hollywood Blockbuster
21:37 mentality of keep all the information to yourself is not something that makes
21:40 sense in today's world we can't keep a secret anyway so we may as well just
21:44 start talking about it there are disadvantages to this approach you look
21:48 at some of the challenges that Chris Roberts's team has had with Star Citizen
21:52 where the kimono is open they're like yeah baby here's all the bugs that we're
21:57 working on in pre Alpha you want to see this crap you want to see this terrible
22:01 code you want to see this unoptimized garbage and you know that turns into
22:07 uncomfortable stories where they'll they'll give us these internal
22:12 Milestones like yeah we really want to have it working for this date and that
22:16 date comes and goes and it's gone it's
22:19 not there yet but then because of that the flak is not as bad that's right just
22:23 be honest with people I had this conversation with another YouTuber a
22:27 little while ago where they made some
22:31 comment about you know whether or not you know sponsorships were okay from a
22:35 particular company and I basically said look I wear my sponsorships on my sleeve
22:41 because the way that I see it if I am upfront with my community about who's
22:46 giving me money and for what and what we're saying then there's nothing to
22:51 hide if everything I tell you guys is the truth and what we're doing and
22:56 everything we're doing is completely above it's up to the viewer to decide
23:00 how they feel about that whereas if I were to try to conceal in some way the
23:05 sponsorships that we have on this show that makes me a lot more uncomfortable
23:09 where if I didn't feel like I was doing something wrong I shouldn't have to hide
23:13 it and anyway so that's sort of that's my my take for my personal business on
23:20 the whole honesty is the best policy thing because if I lied to you guys if I
23:25 said um ASUS doesn't have a relationship
23:29 with us where they sponsor things that we do and that involves an exchange of
23:33 money you guys are going to dig it up at some point yeah pointing at our powered
23:37 by Theus g750 JZ which they're not even you guys are going to dig it up at some
23:41 point and you're going to throw it back in my face and you're right to do
23:45 that period you're right to do that and
23:48 I think the timing for this is kind of awesome because ubisoft's trying to kind
23:51 of like shove some things under the rug and ignoring other things and all the
23:54 kind of stuff and he's like we're going to talk to you guys now good it's do
24:01 it I don't know yeah I mean there's no
24:04 guarantees I mean this is cool um they've added origin game time so this
24:08 is another kind of new thing that they're doing I think they're what are
24:11 they offering two full days of Titanfall for free on PC I mean I I suspect this
24:17 as much of a desperation tactic to resurrect Titanfall as anything else but
24:23 at least it's the right kind of desperation tactic at least they're not
24:27 you know trying to like that whole Fiasco with Microsoft paying game
24:32 streamers to use the Xbox one but then
24:35 not allowing them to talk about it again it all comes down to the same thing be
24:41 honest about your marketing attempts be upfront hey we need people we need
24:45 people to play Titanfall we want to sell this game here try it you know you know
24:50 here's the first this honestly it's a good way to do it and some people have made parallels to the free weekend thing
24:55 on Steam and like that's fine I like that program EA should have taken that I
24:59 hope Ubisoft does as well copying valve is not a bad business Tech no it's not
25:04 they're doing a lot of things correctly and actually you play please God start
25:08 working on copying valve you're bad anyways um this is this is actually a
25:13 really good thing if I didn't own Titanfall I would have actually probably
25:16 downloaded it and tried to play it that's one thing too is being a big AAA
25:20 we sell games for very expensive prices developer having it so that you can try
25:24 these things for free a lot of times is helpful one thing I see with free
25:27 weekends on Steam a lot of the time is that it's an old game Y and it's like 80% off plus a free
25:34 weekend so you can try it and go oh okay I might as well finish this campaign for
25:37 $2 and then you buy it this is kind of
25:41 different because it's Titanfall it's a big fairly new game it's a relatively
25:45 recent game it's not a $9.99 special in you know the summer sale and like it it
25:49 happens you you get these big games and free weekends and stuff too I'm just I'm
25:52 just saying not not all that often so I
25:56 I I don't know I think it's I think it's great I mean I think it's I I I don't
25:59 know that we should applaud it too much because it's not so much a step forward
26:04 as it is retracing the old steps of remember when we used to have demos for
26:08 games yeah yeah yeah do you know how many times I played the Warcraft 2 demo
26:15 campaign and like didn't that come in like PC Gamer or something it was so
26:20 exciting because the the demo had you
26:24 not be able to build Knights or ogres
26:27 but you had to fight one in the final battle partway through one of the levels
26:32 and you were like oh those are cool I want to make those go buy the
26:36 game back when they understood demos it's cool I remember I I used to try and
26:41 get the X original Xbox I almost just
26:44 said Xbox One original Xbox magazines when I had one of those and like you'd
26:49 get the the demo disc for like Mortal Kombat or the demo disc for whatever and
26:53 it was like oh this is so cool I have one level of Mortal Kombat with like
26:57 four characters yeah let's fight for days this is all we have some demos were
27:02 too good the uh the Halo 1 demo allowed
27:05 you to play Blood G multiplayer oh my God which is basically the only map
27:09 anyone ever needed the whole game okay that's
27:14 cool when to hold something back that
27:18 map probably shouldn't have done that although you know whatever if it turns
27:22 into full sales yeah I guess there's that yeah my my dad surprised us with
27:27 our box and Halo so I never needed the demo disc luckily that was cool your
27:31 dad's kind of a badass sometimes he is okay so should we talk about the
27:35 T-Mobile yeah let's move right into T-Mobile test drive so this byon ryuk
27:42 run rukun yeah oh thank you that's
27:46 probably it okay so the original article is from rutters.com so we're going to go
27:50 ahead and pop that open on the page here but basically the big headline here is
27:55 the one week Network test drive where they're letting anyone and their dog
28:00 actually not their dog it has to be one per household ha see how I unless the
28:04 one goes to their dog unless the one goes to the dog a pretty pretty useless
28:09 demo trial but that would be kind of awesome like I like Bol style like dog
28:16 with like Google Glass and like what if you what if you got like a headset thing
28:19 for your dog that had mobile connectivity then you could send it commands through there so you could be
28:25 like come to the living room and if you teach it like what different rooms names
28:28 are if you create that game and then you
28:32 have a demo of it I will play the demo and promptly not buy the
28:36 game dog Commander dog Commander 2014
28:41 edition you know you just know the goat simulator guys are working on this
28:45 already dog Commander dog Commander real
28:49 life 2014 edition upstairs DLC 1499 so
28:52 you can try it for a week and unless you damage the phone this is with an iPhone
28:55 5S unless you damage the phone or you
28:59 what's the other one right fail to return it within the week you will not be charged anything that's pretty
29:04 freaking cool but the big one to me I just signed up for Google Play music so
29:11 the the $10 a month all you can eat service which is just it's amazing cuz
29:15 combined with the Sono system that I just set up um I can just be like I get
29:20 home and I'm like kids music play in the
29:23 living room and my son dances and like it's it's the cutest thing ever that's
29:27 pretty cool it's awesome anyway so T-Mobile is now allowing on popular
29:33 streaming services like Spotify and Pandora you to stream music to your
29:37 phone without that counting towards your data plan how much do I wish that
29:42 T-Mobile was in Canada we say this so much but like seriously please please
29:48 I'm I'm I'm not even on contract right now I just can't pick another vendor
29:51 because they're all horrible so like you
29:54 know there's a there's another new sponsor we have Ting but there they're
29:58 not in Canada either know I know but they're they're pretty cool too because
30:01 I know they are everything's alart and
30:04 anyway you guys are going to hear about it in our upcoming Devil's Canyon video Nick asked me before I knew that they
30:09 were coming on a sponsor he's like what do you think about Ting so I went on
30:12 this like little mini rant about how they're like they're I think they're even a Canadian company they're hosted
30:17 over like Toronto or something our rep is based in Toronto yeah and then but
30:22 they're not in Canada and I like I I went through all this stuff and then he's like oh well that's good cuz
30:27 they're sporing us now and I was like oh well okay cool I'm done with that I
30:32 guess put them on the W show they're not even sponsoring the W show we're just
30:35 giving them a spot because why not anyway T-Mobile's whole thing is if you
30:38 try it we think you're going to love it um they've also got that thing where
30:42 they're incentivizing people to break their contracts by helping pay for that
30:46 um and they're proud of the fact apparently that t- mobile customers use
30:49 69% more data than Verizon customers and
30:53 100% more than AT&T customers it's already cut you off do you remember devil zzz yeah yeah of course he posts
30:59 all the time even on like ncx forums and
31:02 stuff about physics yeah the physics guy know it's his son's Payton's birthday
31:07 okay I just wanted to I had to happy
31:11 physx to your son
31:15 pton okay that's it keep moving speaking
31:18 of physx originally posted by speed rookie on the Forum the original article
31:23 is from Tom's Hardware the word on the street is NVIDIA's gtx8 80 and 880 Ti
31:30 are to be cheaper than the 780 Ti with
31:34 toms's uh by line or whatever the sub headline whatever the Bold thing not all
31:39 rumors should be believed and this is probably a prime example and yeah this
31:43 stems from like some random Forum post somewhere and it's just like and it's
31:48 been making the rounds and I'm going to back up Tom's here because whenever the
31:53 rumors start flying about how much will NVIDIA or AMD's new Gra card cost will
31:59 it be cheaper oh my God it's going to be cheaper will it be more will Intel's new
32:02 CPU be cheaper will it be more the answer is
32:05 no the answer is just no because it's
32:08 going to be the same it's always the same every
32:13 time the one exception was GTX 68 GTX
32:17 680 they blindsided us a little bit in a couple of ways number one was that we
32:21 got a 256bit chip and they called it a high-end GPU number two was that it was
32:25 $100 cheaper than an 80 class GPU tends
32:29 to be so we
32:32 want is um the the rumors are that the
32:37 880 and 880 Ti will be cheaper to manufacture than their predecessor PR
32:43 predecessors um this much could be true especially if the rumor that they'll
32:47 have a 256-bit memory interface are true Al at the same time it might be a
32:51 cheaper to manufacturer but that doesn't necessarily mean that the price is going to come down as they say here okay yeah
32:57 what I'm expecting is that these cards
33:00 might be um you know an improvement in
33:04 performance and design so the of course they're expected to be based on the
33:08 Maxwell architecture so what I would expect based on what we saw with our
33:13 first Maxwell gpus so the 750 Ti is that
33:16 we're going to see dramatic improvements in power consumption we're going to see
33:20 potentially great overclockability we're going to see um better IPC so we might
33:26 get similar performance to the last generation flagships but at a lower cost
33:31 with a narrower memory interface and better costs and if miners were still
33:36 having a crazy Heyday they might be really interested because the 750 Ti was
33:39 a very interesting mining card yeah it was but that's kind of mining's kind of
33:44 yeah you can pick up 290s for like what 250 bucks on eBay now 200 250 bucks like
33:49 sometimes with water block they just like yeah take it oh okay yeah don't
33:55 worry about it bro anyway these are expected to start arriving sort of end
33:58 of 2014 beginning of 2015 but this is all rumors if we knew anything concrete
34:03 we wouldn't be able to say it anyway yep
34:06 speaking of things that we know that are
34:11 concrete this is happening okay I
34:14 thought you were doing this why does it look like that I swear I will murder
34:21 someone that's a lower third yeah it's a lower third but it's like broken and and
34:28 it's not transparent I don't think
34:31 unless ah yes okay well I'm going to fix
34:35 this and then the colors we look
34:40 horrible yeah I don't remember what the things are I think it's like hello
34:43 everyone it's 1970 let's just do like oh
34:47 yes what a Hulk bump up that saturation hold on hold on I got this i got this
34:53 W because that that my friends is how
34:57 crazy awesome this event is going to be this is the first major collaboration
35:02 why do you keep showing off that see thing look how pink it is yes you love
35:08 Firefox we get it actually I'm getting a littleit frustrated with me too it's
35:12 been crashing a lot for me like a lot and there's been other issues anyway so
35:17 um that logs me out of our Forum all the time to stop there's a lot of things
35:21 going on actually all right so anyway Highlanders the first major
35:24 collaboration between Linus Tech tips and Tech Syndicate we will be climbing
35:28 Mount Elbert in Colorado sometime next
35:32 week you guys will get content you're going to get Vlogs you're going to get
35:36 an official video it's going to be fantastic I will be there Logan will be
35:40 there Kane will be there Luke will be there edel will be there Brandon will be
35:44 there Albert of former Tiger Direct affiliation with Logan will be there
35:49 their new guy Jimmy will be there Paul from New Egg will be there Kyle from New
35:53 Egg will be there and Austin Evans hey hey guys we'll be there I'm on
36:00 a mountain freaking everyone hey guys I'm on a mountain I love it oh he's such
36:06 a good guy so it's going to be freaking awesome you guys need to be excite it's
36:11 going to be awesome I want to give a big shout out to our sponsors though we
36:15 couldn't do this event without auss Intel and Corsair they are going to be
36:20 providing the sweet gaming machines that we are going to be using to have the
36:24 world's highest elevation terrestrial land party they are providing the RGB
36:29 keyboards that we are going to be using to play games on a forementioned
36:32 notebooks and of course the whole thing has inel inside because that's how this
36:38 whole thing works without the CPU not a whole lot happens all right moving on to
36:44 our next sponsor this everyone to tweet Austin with hey guys I'm on a mountain
36:50 hey guys I'm on a mountain I just want to see what he does oh I love it okay so
36:54 this is kind of fun I want you guys to do something with me here and that is I
37:00 I get a lot of feedback from people who like Squarespace okay so we'll do a
37:04 quick run through Squarespace fast easy way to build a beautiful website it's
37:08 inexpensive their service is 247 basically they're a great supporter of
37:12 us and what we do and we love them lusm medag group.com runs on Squarespace and
37:17 since we set it up we literally haven't touched it I'm I'm working on building
37:21 my own with no communication to Squarespace that it's actually me really
37:25 yeah it's going great so far okay that's all I really have for you I haven't done
37:29 a ton on it um but everything that I've done is awesome I hope I can I haven't
37:34 tried to get down to like bare code yet but I'm hoping I can at some point
37:37 because there's a few things I want to edit that are a little bit more specific so we get a lot of feedback from our
37:41 viewers that hey lonus thanks for the Squarespace thing it's absolutely
37:44 fantastic but what I want you guys to do is I want you to use # Linus Squarespace
37:50 and I want you to actually tweet your own Squarespace sites now there's more
37:55 to this than just tweet your Squarespace sight at me and we're going to show it
37:59 on the show here because we are going to do that the real trick is actually that
38:05 someone who tweets that hashtag to us anytime in the next couple of weeks so
38:10 we're going to run this again next week is going to win their Squarespace site
38:14 for a year whoa yay that time you were pretending cuz I
38:19 know you knew about this no I didn't really what no one tells me anything I
38:24 had no idea so you can win
38:27 your website to be completely hosted by Squarespace for a full year and anyone
38:33 who creates a trial website and that's free can qualify as well so guys go
38:38 ahead start creating your Squarespace sites and we are going to pick one lucky
38:42 winner we're just going to do a random draw between everyone who submits their
38:45 websites and we will give you your
38:48 website for a year Well Squarespace will give it to you we'll just act as the
38:52 conduit for them giving it to you uh what did I say hash Linus
38:58 Squarespace so you guys want to go ahead and do that and in the meantime I'd love
39:03 for hey look at this already websites I
39:06 created a free website with Squarespace so we've got uh oh no I don't think we
39:10 have any new ones so in the meantime we're going to move on to our ask the
39:14 expert Liv stream which is really no E3
39:18 was last time okay well whatever ask the expert live stream it's coming next week
39:23 we are going to have one of the uh let
39:27 me see actually I can't quite you know what I'm just going to bring up the Forum thread because I think that'll
39:32 work better here this is going to be pretty cool we did this a little while
39:35 ago with one of their uh one of their technical engineer guys on the SSD side
39:39 when they launched the 730 and I don't know if you guys tuned into that live
39:43 stream but it was really really good we got a ton of insight into things like
39:48 like this guy worked with the team that launched the original extreme Edition
39:52 and he was talking about that and just the all these behind the scenes like
39:55 crazy cool things go on so this time we have a product marketing engineer on the
40:00 CPU side of things so you're going to want to go ahead and there we go uh
40:05 check out this thread it's called talk to the product marketing engineer I
40:08 think I had asked Nick to call it um ask the expert but whatever um live chat and
40:13 giveaway you're going to want to tune in we're going to be talking about behind
40:16 the scenes how Intel's Devil's Canyon CPUs came to be and we are going to be
40:21 giving away Two Devil's Canyon CPUs so that's going
40:26 to be pretty freaking sweet so head over to linch tips.com you know what I'll go
40:30 ahead actually if some no I'll do it I'll post this in the twitch chat I can
40:34 never trust other people's links in the twitch chat because people do bad things
40:38 in the twitch chat I love you people but you do bad
40:42 things and there is no point denying it no no there really isn't all right
40:48 hey look at this we have uh the twitch chat is like that friend you have in
40:52 high school that you don't want to tell your parents about cuz they'd be like stop hanging out with bad people but
40:57 love them cuz they're awesome but they they do do those bad look at that we
41:00 have at least one Squarespace site to show you guys so this kind of shows you
41:05 how you can use their templates to create something that's attractive
41:08 looking without spending a whole ton of time on it so here they're using it as a
41:12 showcase for their videos but you can do a Blog you can make a store you can what
41:17 are you even doing or is that too early to I honestly I just wanted to grab the
41:21 URL lucy.com okay so I'm just going to put it somewhere so it doesn't look like
41:26 I'm just camping it and so I'm just going to make my own random thing is it
41:29 going to be uh grad pictures of you cuz I I heard a rumor that those are
41:35 floating around no it won't be grad pictures of
41:39 me did I tell you about that I must have told you are now now people are going to
41:44 look why did you do this you're a
41:47 jerk and that was
41:50 ever not not a known quantity to you
41:54 because this is cuz I teab bagged Yoshi wasn't it all right let's move on to and
42:00 yes by the way let's move on to the big
42:04 lonus Tech tips related news so we're
42:07 not even going to share the screen with this news because it is way too badass
42:12 welcome to the new Linus Tech
42:17 tips.com do you want to do you want to walk can't I I need a browser that works
42:21 for a second are you in Firefox look at I don't know what happened to this
42:25 computer that was like pretty broken oh okay is oh is it a zoom thing no
42:30 there's an ad takeover oh it's it was on Twitter and stuff I was wondering if
42:33 Twitter started pushing ads to people brilliant um apparently okay well
42:37 whatever look look on my screen just walk okay so there's not all
42:41 functionality is already in here yet yeah it says beta yeah throwing that out
42:44 there so I'm going to go through how things are kind of supposed to work so this main big slider where you guys see
42:49 GPU miners crash of 2014 and other things constantly rotates you can pause
42:54 it though and you can manually select next or whatever if you click in the
42:57 black space um that also goes next but
43:01 if you click read more or click on the image that will bring you to the article
43:05 there's some like teaser text that will go under the title so you can see a
43:09 little bit about what the article is about that I've just filled in a couple
43:12 of them right now because I just wanted to get the site live um so basically if
43:16 you click on things oops there's a bit of a bug where it kind
43:20 of apparently does that let's click read
43:24 more oh God oh God okay well this was
43:28 working not that long ago this was working like literally before the show
43:32 started well whatever it's supposed to go to the article why don't we uh why
43:35 don't we click on one of these to get to an article I think it's because so many
43:38 people are hitting it oh so it's going next because that's loading on your your
43:43 computer it's not going to be article because it's lagging so hard that
43:49 actually makes sense see there we go okay so the
43:52 article page has also been revamped the cool thing about this guys is check this
43:57 out so here is where the person who
44:01 posted it in this case it was rafy Rafi whatever um here's where their post goes
44:06 here's where the original Source goes and here is where quotes go it's just a
44:11 stylistic change to what is actually a
44:14 forum thread so the discussion that goes under it can be commented on on the
44:18 front page or the Forum and it all comes together in one thing this is
44:22 essentially just a more stylistic version of browsing the Forum where we
44:26 can feature different topics so like right now it's mostly all stuff from
44:31 Tech news and reviews but there's also stuff from hot deals because we were
44:35 showing the Steam summer sale thing that was posted in hot deals so anything
44:39 that's like a really big deal very topical thing could potentially be
44:44 pushed to the front page and you can see over here there's more places to see
44:48 other headlines we've left some space below the fold where we can put some ad
44:52 placements potentially but in general I mean we're going to be sticking to the
44:57 the Linus tips.com strategy of not inundating people who visit with ads no
45:02 matter who they are so it's great if people choose to become contributors so
45:06 they don't see any ads at all but in general we don't want to a lot of
45:10 websites actually design their website around optimal ad placements we designed
45:15 our website and then we're like wait where can we put
45:19 these uh fig out this slider down here
45:23 works by clicking side to side yeah and the idea is that big main slider will
45:28 eventually be the the newest four topics
45:32 and then the lower slider will be the eight topics after that and there won't
45:35 be any overlap right now it's all overlapping and there's eight total and
45:39 then of course we've got featured videos so we're going to have the latest Linus
45:42 Tech tips video as well as the latest fastest possible video so people can
45:45 check those out we'd be kind of stupid if we didn't try to feature our videos
45:49 on our website and then this feature is one that Luke told me was impossible but
45:54 then it turned out that if I hit him hard enough
45:57 um it's actually can work really well it's like this this cascading layer of
46:01 hitting it's like you hit me and then I flop forward and just go and hit Catman
46:07 and then things happen so basically trending topics is a
46:13 great place to check out whatever's a hot discussion on the Forum right now so
46:17 we've got AMD teasing something we've got uh a troubleshooting thing we've got
46:22 Ubisoft talking about the whole hidden Graphics thing we have the summer sale
46:26 and we've got um just a discussion about what would you guys like to become
46:29 standard in PC Hardware so the algorithm
46:33 behind this is surprisingly simple but
46:36 um it's surprisingly simple but I think it does a great job of bringing some
46:40 really cool feature topics up to the front you just okay we're good um then
46:45 there's featured builds at the bottom I know we've been somewhat semi ignoring
46:48 build logs of the thing for a little while so we're putting it on the front
46:51 page of Linus detective.com yeah and then we we are doing the monthly thing
46:56 um yeah yeah it's be next week I know it's
47:01 like super crazy late but we're still gonna make it this month and then we'll
47:05 be good to go in the future it's gone right now because it doesn't work okay I'll explain it okay so basically guys
47:10 over here you just go to the latest news
47:13 our shows is a drop down that has these broken Graphics we're going to add
47:17 Channel Super Fun we're going to fix those icons all that kind of stuff uh
47:23 this is the main the page will this is the main articles page where you can
47:26 just view whatever were the most recent articles um there's also another view
47:31 here for trending topics we're going to add another thing that's maybe a further
47:35 decay of the most recent topics but that is text so that it can be a little bit
47:39 more dense and then we are going this community link takes you to The Forum
47:44 and we are going to add a little Cog right here that will change your
47:49 default to whichever you prefer lusch
47:52 tips.com homepage or the Forum main page
47:56 so if you are are one of the Forum guys and don't want to see this ever and
48:00 don't care about it you don't have to yeah we're all about choice we think
48:05 it's great we think it's a really cool way to interact with what's going on on
48:09 the Forum but if you totally disagree
48:12 that's cool man don't worry about it or so that that Cog wheel will be
48:16 changeable somewhere else on the Forum as well so if you do it once it's not
48:20 like you can never go back we're going to work on a few things like we've had
48:24 some comments about navigating between the two can be a little bit confusing so
48:27 we're going to work on a few things like that like it's it's definitely beta
48:31 there's definitely still a bunch of things to do but I'm going to try and
48:34 keep the Articles at least pretty recent for now while we're still working on
48:38 things so it's usable um and then once we go Fully live the Articles should be
48:42 rolling because that's going to be the main thing and at some point we're going
48:45 to be uh we're going to be working with the community to have the Articles
48:49 actually be whatever the community pick so we're going to take some whether
48:53 they're appointed or whether they're however it works we're going to take
48:56 some our top contributors and have them start being able to basically push their
49:01 articles to the front page yeah I have a few few people that I kind of think will
49:06 already be on top of that but what we'll we'll see once that actually starts
49:10 becoming so very much by the community for the community uh we think it's
49:13 really cool we hope that you guys do too and uh there you go that's what we've
49:19 been this has been in the works for like
49:22 8 months really long time long time seen
49:25 a lot of iteration yeah the original design got
49:30 completely like completely redone and I think this is a
49:36 good opportunity to give a huge shout out to Catman on the forum for the hours
49:41 of work that he did to help us build this front page um just all the thumbs
49:48 up like if I had more thumbs
49:51 yay these are my hiking boots that I'm breaking in for our uh our hike
49:57 anyway so uh what's our next topic I don't even know do we have more topics
50:01 uh we even cover on this show I I don't
50:05 know we have more topics so we have tons of stuff in Rapid Fire uh Steam Sale and
50:09 we can also talk about all of these things yeah let's talk about the Steam Sale so have have you bought anything no
50:16 I think they're running into a real challenge here you and I were talking
50:19 about this before so why don't you try to work your way through the topic in a
50:23 coherent manner so so steam sales have been going on for a really long long
50:27 time and they I don't think they were coming as fast as they used to yeah
50:32 summer sale was like the big thing and
50:35 now there's like summer sale and winter sale and Friday sale and like every sale
50:41 you could ever possibly imagine so now we get to this summer sale and
50:44 everybody's freaking out and posting gifts that are very old about the summer
50:49 sale which I found kind of applicable to my point that it's it's a lot of the
50:54 same stuff is on sale and actually for a lot of the same sales so a lot of things
50:59 that I'm seeing go up like there might be one or two that are fairly
51:02 interesting but then a lot of them are just like yeah this is this has already
51:06 happened I already have this game because I bought it at this price a year
51:10 ago so I'll take a little bit of my product management experience and sort
51:15 of talk about this one of the biggest challenges is retaining um customer
51:22 excitement so I I worked at NCI for 5 years I was a product manager or
51:26 category manager for about three and a half four of it and um NC's sale
51:32 promotional cycle is every Wednesday night a new weekly sale launches and the
51:38 weekly sale can have CPUs or video cards
51:42 or fans or whatever else and the idea is
51:47 that at least some of those items need to be crazy and enticing because
51:52 otherwise you don't generate that excitement and that buzz and that hype
51:57 that truthfully even online even compared to because in retail you talk
52:02 about a loss leader where the idea is to get the person into the door and sell
52:05 them something else even online getting someone onto the website is a huge part
52:10 of the battle and then if they buy that that CPU that you're discounting below
52:15 cost they they might also buy a motherboard and they might also buy a video card and I mean in the IT industry
52:20 the margins are so slim that that doesn't necessarily help that much but
52:23 the point is that lost leading works and creating excitement helps to build the
52:28 relationship with the customer because they get excited about what you're doing you look at how well valve does that
52:32 they create this this excitement in this basically worship oh god of their
52:38 sale and what happens is that eventually
52:41 you run into a couple of roadblocks number one is that you can only drop
52:44 prices so low before it starts to erode
52:48 the margin and devalue the product to the point where customers aren't willing
52:52 to pay more for it anymore and then you can't support your business that's
52:55 starting to happen that is starting to happen um number two is you run out of
53:00 new interesting things to erode the margin on and as long as there are you
53:06 know Indie devs spitting out games every week or two um that's going to be less
53:11 of an issue for PC gaming than it became for it in the later days of me managing
53:15 that product because what happened was all of a sudden NVIDIA and AMD slowed
53:20 down from new graphics cards every 6 to 9 months to now we're looking at 12 to
53:23 15 to 18 and you can only discount the
53:27 GTX 770 to $299.99 so many times before it stops
53:32 becoming exciting you need before that be starts to become the price that
53:35 people buy it at yes you need new products to Discount okay so that's
53:40 that's uh that's problem number two and then problem number three is that I I
53:46 think I guess that's pretty much it so we we look at this and to reinforce your
53:50 point Sorry problem number three is because of the weekly
53:54 sale Approach at NC we ran into this
53:57 issue where from week to week the complaint was oh it's always the same
54:01 things on sale and we'd kind of go well man what do you want us to do there
54:07 there's no new graphics card it's kind of like when people complain about lonus
54:11 tech tips not having a bunch of motherboard videos and I go man a
54:15 motherboard hasn't been released in six months what do you want me to say I'm
54:18 I'm going to go cover old motherboards yeah that'll work my biggest thing for
54:21 ncx would be like it would be some themed sale and then I'd be like there's
54:26 nothing following this theme but the problem with I get it so so valve is
54:31 running into that frequency increasing margin eroding and not enough new
54:36 products issue but the problem is that you can never
54:40 backpedal I couldn't count the number of times that the product management team
54:45 would get together and devise a new business strategy that wasn't a weekly
54:50 sale and we'd kind of go okay let's do this let's do that we'll do because you
54:54 know what's funny is customers ask for it all the time we want everyday low
54:58 pricing and when you do that when you actually take an entire product line
55:02 look we experimented with it I did it I would take an entire product line and I
55:07 would discount it to the Target margin of a weekly sale item and I would just
55:12 put it up on the website sales go like this it's not exciting you have to
55:18 Discount and you can't stop discounting
55:22 once you've started doing it so you end up in this trap and that is what I I
55:28 guess we were trying to say we feel like is happening with the steam sales they
55:32 they they still have those pull items though that you're talking about like Witcher 2 the enhanced Edition for four
55:37 bucks 80% off that was a huge like I saw people talking about that everywhere but
55:41 then there's also a lot of games on here that are just like yeah man i' it's not
55:46 I've seen at that price like a whole bunch of times so I guess what I'm trying to say is as a product manager
55:51 I'm telling you guys you got to be realistic in terms of your expectations
55:56 valve won't be able to keep it up
55:59 forever I think I think I think they will but it's just it's not going to be
56:03 like the summer sale from like three years ago it's not going to be like it
56:07 was and people will yearn for the old days and what they have to understand is
56:11 that there's no going back to the old days there's no going back to the days
56:15 of Intel and AMD leapfrogging each other every few months with newer higher
56:19 performing more exciting CPUs that's never coming again until maybe I don't
56:24 know Quantum Computing or something like it's it's it's gone for now pum K is
56:28 pretty freaking cool it's the same thing with cell phones you know we're on
56:32 yearlong scheduled release Cycles with
56:35 the big guys with iterative improvements that really aren't bringing a whole lot
56:39 new to the table be prepared to be less excited I think a lot of journalists who
56:44 were disappointed with the Galaxy S5 had unrealistic expectations honestly I
56:49 thought the Galaxy S5 was just fine it didn't blow me away but then neither did
56:52 the S4 because I guess I just don't care that much but they did something that I
56:56 thought were pretty great I thought the fact that they still have a plastic shell but the flex is much less was
57:00 really good I just I had a different set of expectations for the
57:04 S5 yeah speaking of of discounting and
57:07 having room to bring prices down Apple now has a cheaper
57:11 iMac um I think this is interesting for a number of reasons I think it's I think
57:16 it's amazing that Apple gets away with introducing new desktop computers that
57:20 have 1.4 GHz mobile dual core chips in
57:23 them and 500 gig like mechanical hard
57:27 drives for $1,100 I think that's amazing and
57:32 they're basically Geniuses um but this
57:35 is this is the thing you were just talking about they can't go back now they can't they can no longer have a not
57:40 super cheap iMac but at least they've left themselves room to upgrade it they
57:44 can add a quad core they can go SSD and they can put in discret graphics so that
57:48 takes care of the next three generations of incremental improvements to the 212
57:52 in lowend iMac one thing that is surprising to me
57:56 is it looks identical yeah so you can still get the like uh I have an iMac so
58:01 you can still have uh I mean I'm trendy
58:05 our our our viewer base and our Forum
58:08 Community tends to kind of hate on Apple a fair bit but let's be honest guys
58:13 industrial design costs money the same
58:16 people who are drooling over how beautiful the 1 M8 is and talking about
58:20 how great it is and it's you know fantastic that an Android phone has such
58:24 great design are the same people who who are going to call an iPhone
58:27 worthless when that stuff costs
58:31 money having good build quality and good
58:34 industrial design costs money and apple
58:38 does some things right they put great screens on their machines am I going to
58:42 buy one no because I know where to buy a good screen that doesn't come attached
58:46 to an Apple computer but for a mainstream User it's not a terrible
58:50 choice and it's nice to see them delivering something that I think fits
58:53 really nicely into a niche I think someone like my dad would be just as
58:59 suit this would be just as suitable for him plus an SSD because I think everyone
59:03 needs an SSD someone like my dad could use this computer and it would be just
59:07 as adequate for his needs as a $3,000 gaming rig with the other argument being
59:12 that you could also build a $500 PC that would work for it as well so there's
59:16 that Different Strokes for different folks speaking of Strokes uh hard drives
59:19 you can Short Stroke them and we didn't Short Stroke it but we did take a hard
59:23 drive and test it against an SSD oh that was I was like what is this segue the
59:28 worst Segway ever it worked though we got there we got there we did make it
59:32 it's all about getting there that's what she said anyway so unlike every other
59:37 SSD versus hard drive test that I've ever seen where they take a completely
59:43 sterile brand new OS put the latest
59:46 drivers update all the Windows updates
59:49 put on their benchmarking applications and then test an SSD versus a hard drive
59:53 and you'll see metrics like oh the SSD took 11 seconds to boot and the hard
59:57 drive took 16 seconds and the the people
60:00 who don't get it the people who don't understand the value of an SSD look at
60:06 that and go yeah it's okay I can wait 5
60:10 seconds I like that I like I mean spread
60:13 out lean back I even saw some comments on our ad SSD upgrade zombie video where
60:18 people are like yeah um ssds are still stupid because um hard drives have 130
60:23 megabytes per second and ssds are only this much and it doesn't work that way
60:27 okay so but the problem seems to be in the way that we benchmarked them so we
60:33 decided to take a realworld like broken
60:38 OS hard drive like one that's had its operating system running on it for five
60:41 years got all kinds of crap running in the background is full it has like a
60:47 bunch of was full was full I guess not full anymore but basically has had
60:52 different boot loaders on it like like a few of them has had virus
60:57 REM the way that a computer get used and
61:00 then we ran we cloned that exact OS over to an SSD so we're showing the worst
61:05 case most broken scenario for both and we tested them head-to-head and you guys
61:10 are going to be wanting to check out the results that's going to come out uh
61:14 sometime when is that video coming out it's fully ready is it ready okay so
61:18 it's probably going to come out sometime this weekend or early next week so stay
61:21 tuned for that guys uh I think it'll be early next week it's not edited yet it's
61:25 like it's the all the that'll be next week the graphs are done all the footage
61:29 is shot I think it's going to be the video to show the people who don't
61:34 understand the value of an SSD someone in chat is SSD is just a
61:38 number no it is not actually it isn't this time it is actually
61:44 not oh man uh where was that other thing the VR
61:49 fan let's talk about the VR fan okay I
61:52 have to confess I didn't read this okay so you're on point oh dang I was gonna
61:57 try and get you I because I I got this but I was gonna try and get you like
62:01 what are your immediate thoughts upon seeing it okay I I did look at it a
62:05 little bit so the idea is that it's going to blow air at you in order to make things more immersive right I think
62:09 it's okay what do you think I think
62:12 about it I think that you probably think it's amazing nope really I'm actually
62:17 totally on your side oh okay and I've I've surprised like almost everyone with
62:21 that so far but I like at at E3 everyone
62:24 saw me freak out over control VR and I once saw my point about how for VR to
62:29 become amazing we need to immerse all senses yeah and that got quoted a few
62:33 times and I still stand by that but we don't need to be worrying about like
62:38 wind Force at this point in the game
62:41 with some like random little tiny fan which is probably not going to feel like
62:45 it actually is anyways for certain specialty like very specific that bird
62:51 thing like the bird thing where the fan was adaptively making you feel like you
62:55 were rushing through the air okay but it's not the kind of thing that I'm
62:59 going okay and if it's just a desk fan that sits on my desk and is just a desk
63:03 fan except when I'm like okay I'm firing up the Oculus it's still dumb cuz you need it
63:09 you need it to be like like for the bird thing when he was flying the whole fan
63:14 physically moved yes so this thing isn't going to work unless you like okay this
63:18 is where the fan is so my head goes here because like it's going to
63:24 it's going to have to be positioned perfectly so unless you're like strapping it onto this huge rig that
63:29 you're building anyways for the the one
63:32 game that it's applicable for I'm not really sure and I would I just like it's
63:36 cool that this guy made this but I I don't necessarily think it's good enough
63:39 or ready yet for one um and it's it's
63:43 I'm more worried about stuff like full body motion capture yeah which is like a
63:48 way bigger deal than the wind I don't know I mean I to me it
63:53 feels like um I hope Devil's Z is watching to me it feels kind of like um
63:58 especially early implementations of FX
64:01 where it's it's a nice to have not a need to have like like especially like
64:05 remember games like gr right where the
64:08 fizx implementation was like crumpled
64:12 paper and 10 cans on the ground oh wrecked right where it's just like okay
64:16 so that's there I totally don't care and this is totally stupid this fan is not
64:21 going to be an integral part of any game play in the next 10 years you can quote
64:27 me on that well the bird simulator thing
64:30 that's not gameplay that's a
64:35 simulation slightly different actually but still within the same category I
64:39 suppose okay that fan will not be part
64:42 of the game play and that's that's another thing
64:46 like it has these nice cool specifics in terms of speed and stuff like that but
64:50 it's probably immersive enough just to shove a fan in and I said integral part
64:53 of gameplay like you look at how long like physx where NVIDIA has throughout
64:59 the entirety of physx History had 60
65:03 plus% market share on the desktop PC
65:06 okay cards that support fizx are out there and yet we still don't have physx
65:12 as an integral part of any game play
65:15 with the exception of like cell factor
65:19 which was never a thing it was a tech demo couldn't you like kick cans and
65:24 stuff wasn't that like a big part of the game so with the 16 people who own this
65:28 fan are we expecting a real game developer to build in support the answer
65:32 is no uh apparently yeah to integral
65:36 part of gameplay yeah y y y so there you go I don't I just
65:41 yeah I uh it's it's it's a cool idea but
65:45 like he's he's not getting funded because of everything that you just said
65:49 um and maybe he does eventually get funded and I hope like someone picks him
65:53 up because that would be cool cuz they're doing interesting programming
65:57 stuff at the same time and if someone Picks Them Up and makes a way better
66:01 version that would be really cool if someone picks them up and integrates it
66:04 with another piece of VR Hardware like maybe
66:08 Omni gets like a ring of them so that as
66:11 you're walking around they could all work dynamically because you're able to
66:15 plug them in together okay by the time we're building solutions that are
66:18 Advanced enough for that like like how you and I were talking about how the
66:21 arcade no that's what I mean though have to be something something way more
66:26 advanced than this yeah yeah yeah I wasn't really listening was that what you were saying basically good job yeah
66:31 okay I was I was making a straw pull cuz you can already string them together so
66:35 you can plug them together and then they can work together to create the experience you can already do that so it
66:39 probably doesn't work that great though so if someone else what I'm saying is if someone else picks them up and then
66:44 integrates their fan solution into a much bigger product and then is able to
66:48 have them all strung together and make it so that like like an arcade or something that could be really really
66:51 cool all right I have a straw pole for you guys
66:56 I'm evaluating options right now we we don't necessarily
67:01 know um what form this would take but
67:04 I'd just like for you guys to tell me would you consider for your rig for your
67:09 for your gaming PC buying a lonus tech tips color schemed fan so it would just
67:14 be black and orange and it would be about 20 bucks potentially and I can't
67:19 give any more details it's something that I've wanted to do for a long time
67:23 uh we were looking for the partner sorry it's a high quality we can say it's a
67:26 high quality fan well we don't have the fan nailed down just yet so I've been
67:30 trying to do this for a long time and basically what I want to know is do you
67:33 guys even think it's worth the effort um because to put it to put this in
67:38 perspective to to buy fans like I would
67:41 have to buy them I would have to buy thousands so unless there are like
67:46 hundreds of you who are like yes I'll buy one or I'll buy two or I'll buy five
67:51 this can't happen so I I need to get some idea if you guys think that this is
67:56 uh this is something that's worth doing and you can feel free to uh to tweet
68:00 that at us as well we'll do a bit of a Twitter Blitz about this if you guys want to go ahead and uh
68:06 and tweet tweet us sounds dirty tweet
68:10 dirty to me and all the tweets were not related to the F oh wow
68:18 that's interesting speaking of tweets that are not related to anything what
68:23 the heck is this I don't know
68:29 um I don't know wow um live live shopping us on the
68:36 stream needs to not be a
68:40 thing someone says please invest in a
68:44 lapel mic that Explorer 3 review was
68:47 hard to watch with audio like that what's what exp what's the Explorer 3 I
68:50 have no idea is Alex Hardy confusing us with
68:55 with somebody else Explorer
68:58 3 I can't even think what that if that was a type of what that could be yeah
69:04 Explorer three anyway we have a lapel mic uh we did do a video recently where
69:09 we didn't use our lav and it was because these guys took it to a trade show so oh
69:13 basically deal with it um that's all I really have to say yeah I don't I don't
69:19 think so no explor three yeah no anyway uh
69:23 let's move on so people are saying maybe he meant E3
69:28 sure but I don't know people are saying they have brand preferences people are
69:33 saying they want LEDs I can tell you right now it probably won't be LEDs and
69:37 I can tell you right now they won't be cheaper than $20 um I'd buy a fan I'll buy Six I
69:43 would buy them if they were high quality and get my PC cool my build is black and
69:46 orange I'm down I'd make all my fans lus
69:49 Edition okay so people are uh people are
69:53 saying sort of yes um I'm getting advice
69:56 don't invest tens of thousands of dollars in fans lonus if I didn't invest
70:01 tens of thousands of dollars in my fans
70:04 where would you all be not fans of anything we do
70:10 potentially or maybe you would maybe I could have done all of this without
70:14 hiring people and buying a bunch of equipment and stuff I'm going back to
70:17 PewDiePie's approach actually that's something that I meant to talk about on
70:21 the show this week is news broke there was a Forbes article about how PewDiePie
70:25 makes $4 million a year or at least did last year I can tell you right now if it
70:29 was 4 million last year it's a lot more than that this year um and there's a
70:33 there's a whole bunch of stuff going on I mean uh puds himself has come out and
70:38 said that that might be something of an exaggeration um although I so call BS on
70:44 that because I know how much money we make I know how many views we get I know
70:52 what a typical CPM is I know all of these metrics and that sounds about
70:56 right so and like don't even just look at subscribers look at how many views
71:00 and how many videos he pumps out and there's there are a lot of
71:03 misconceptions um and and you look at how many videos he pumps out and also
71:06 the fact that it's basically pure profit because he doesn't really have a team of
71:11 people um or really any overhead it's it's streaming at a computer like he's
71:16 shown what his game streaming setup looks like it's nothing really special
71:19 there's lots of games but yeah aside from that um I mean I'm not I'm not
71:24 going to be one of those guys that goes he doesn't deserve it because the
71:27 reality of it is the way the world works
71:31 is the people who figure something out and are clever enough to figure it out
71:35 really well and be the best at something be number one at anything are going to
71:40 be rewarded I'm not the number one YouTuber so I'm not going to get that
71:45 massive enormous reward and I'm okay with that I'm not going to be all you
71:48 know butt hurt oh he makes so much money I'm so unhappy um you know I I say I say
71:53 good for him and people people are the the other people on the other side are
71:57 pointing out that he has done uh charitable donations and you know raised
72:01 money for worthy causes and all that stuff and you know I think that's great
72:04 too I also don't think it necessarily you know validates if people make a ton
72:09 of money and then they also raise money for charity I don't think that that I I
72:14 don't think that should make people less upset about the disparity between the
72:18 extremely wealthy and the extremely not wealthy um I just think it is what it is
72:23 and um that number looks pretty realistic to me
72:28 I I also wanted to dispel some myths so there are people out there who think
72:32 that um you know Google AdSense on YouTube videos is like massive massive
72:37 amounts of money um to put the to put things in perspective lineus Media Group
72:42 if it relied strictly on Google AdSense
72:45 I could pay each of the people here uh
72:49 about $20,000 a year after their taxes and uh
72:55 and after like Employment Insurance that's below minimum wage Pion pay yes
73:00 yeah yeah that's well below minimum wage and we all work like massive overtime
73:04 and we all work really hard I prefer the term really hard we work really hard
73:08 gratuitous amounts of overtime I didn't stop working last night until like 2
73:12 a.m. the point is that that's not the way it works however if you do get those
73:17 kinds of viewership numbers where you look at it and I think his view his
73:21 numbers are like ridiculous like an order of magnitude and more higher than
73:26 ours then it starts to add up especially if you don't have a ton of overhead
73:30 another of the misconceptions that I encountered was that YouTubers get paid
73:34 for subscribers YouTubers get paid exactly zero dollars for having a lot of
73:39 subscribers the fact that I have $850,000 subscribers on a channel means
73:43 nothing to Google nothing in terms of money it might mean something in terms
73:48 of the inherent value of having someone
73:51 who clicked and said yes I would like to hear from you when you some new content
73:56 there there's a value there but it doesn't translate into money at all uh
74:00 the money comes from the actual views so if you want to figure out how much a
74:04 YouTuber is making relative to another YouTuber then you would look at views
74:09 not at subscribers you could have a million subscribers and not be getting a
74:12 ton of views like um someone like Peter
74:16 chow and the revenue is probably not as strong there unless you know he's doing
74:21 um really lucrative brand Integrations or things like that so that's how
74:26 YouTubers are making the big bucks is doing things like um Devon super tramps
74:32 Watchdogs uh Parkour in Real Life or whatever thing there's no way that
74:36 Ubisoft didn't pay enormous buckets of money for that for example YouTube the
74:42 like couple million views on YouTube were not going to be worth the effort of making that video some people started
74:46 freaking out that our our minimum wage is so high just don't forget cost of
74:51 living expense yeah Vancouver is an extremely expensive place place to live
74:55 where we live has the 10 most expensive places to buy gas in all of North
74:59 America so yeah it's kind of
