0:07 at some point or another in your life you've probably been in the position of
0:10 being drawn to something shiny and fancy
0:14 at least until you saw the price and if you're like me this has probably
0:18 happened to you at least once if you're willing to admit it
0:22 at an apple store but why do apple products have this reputation for being
0:26 so gosh darn expensive i mean i could understand why the original iphone and
0:32 macintosh were pricey they were category defining devices but nowadays plenty of
0:37 other manufacturers are rolling out do-it-all smartphones and slick-looking
0:42 computers so how does apple still justify charging a premium
0:46 well let's go ahead and get the obvious and
0:50 slightly cynical answer out of the way first you are at least partially paying for
0:55 the brand similarly to other companies that tend
0:58 to charge more for their products that aren't necessarily better than their
1:03 competitors when it comes to performance or features
1:06 apple has successfully positioned itself as a
1:09 lifestyle brand that can get away with selling their wares at higher prices
1:15 simply because people are willing to pay more for the logo
1:19 but this doesn't mean that apple products are just overpriced junk part
1:25 of the reason that they have this luxury image in the minds of their fans is that
1:29 they have consistently focused on the higher end of the market
1:33 ever since the launch of the original iphone they've put more consideration
1:36 into design features and component quality compared to cost and this has
1:41 also been true of products like the macbook now the lower end of the market is
1:46 indeed valuable just ask mcdonald's or walmart but apple hasn't wanted to risk
1:52 cheaping out to make lower end products that could compromise their brand
1:56 reputation especially after the failures of devices that they did design to be
2:01 more affordable like the iphone 5c
2:04 and there's more to manufacturing than just the bill of materials or bomb cost
2:09 of the actual device apple invests heavily in the development of new
2:13 technologies and manufacturing processes
2:17 so despite the headlines regarding poor treatment of contract workers in asian
2:21 factories idevices generally aren't
2:24 cheap to produce combine this with the fact that apple is
2:27 relatively picky about component sourcing and you end up with a situation
2:32 where once they do standardize something supply for these parts can become
2:36 constrained raising prices for the folks in line at the apple store at 6 am and
2:41 in some cases even industry wide
2:44 apple also has to sink a significant amount of money into software
2:48 development because it has its own proprietary platform
2:52 unlike manufacturers of Android phones for example which can obtain the Android
2:57 os for free from google and then tweak it according to their needs apple built
3:02 and maintains iOS macOS and backend
3:05 services like icloud and imessage themselves which further drives up their
3:10 costs which of course someone has to cover
3:14 and although the proprietary more closed nature of the apple platform has been a
3:18 lightning rod for criticism some of it quite legitimate it's also a value add
3:23 for many customers who choose to buy into the apple ecosystem as there's a
3:28 perception among apple fans that having software and hardware so tightly
3:32 integrated with each other allows for better performance and reliability along
3:37 with less susceptibility to malware and while idevices obviously are not
3:43 crash proof or completely secure apple
3:47 has been able to run a tight enough ship for this perception to endure among its
3:51 loyal customers finally of course you have to consider
3:55 how much money apple spends on marketing
3:58 some of their initiatives are obvious like ads on tv or the hype that they
4:03 build around their famous or infamous launch events courage but some of their
4:07 marketing costs are less so take apple's stores for example they do serve as a
4:13 place where you can walk in and buy an iphone or whatever but they also invest
4:18 in costly highly visible locations
4:21 iconic designs and an experience in the store that is distinctly apple
4:27 like what about those free workshops and tutorials that they host well those
4:32 aren't free for apple to host but they continue to run them because they
4:36 increase brand loyalty so even though apple has recently dipped
4:41 its toes into more affordable products such as its sub 350 dollar ipad and
4:46 competitors do sell products that might have more powerful components at a lower
4:51 price apple has used an interesting combination of product strategy and
4:56 marketing hype to keep people coming back for more
