0:25 so
0:52 get it
0:55 a coffee lake yep oh like the CPU we're
0:59 reviewing yup oh yeah well you know what thanks
1:02 for that and while we're at it thanks to tunnelbear tunnelbear makes it easy to
1:07 privately and securely browse a more open internet try telebear for free go
1:11 to tunnelbear.com LTT
1:23 the core i7 8700k and core i5 8400 cpus
1:27 that we're reviewing today are members of Intel's eighth generation core series
1:32 code name coffee lake
1:35 they're built on the improved 14 nanometer plus plus
1:40 process and they fit in the same socket
1:43 as 6th and 7th gen processors but
1:47 for those of you rejoicing in the streets that Intel is supporting the
1:52 same socket for three generations of desktop chips for the first time in a
1:56 decade think again neither 8th gen chips nor the 300 series
2:03 motherboards that go with them are backwards compatible trust us
2:08 we tried Intel has an excuse though at least for
2:13 the new cpus to not work in the old boards because the new z370 chipset even
2:19 though rumors indicate that it's fundamentally a retooled z270 supports
2:23 higher speed ddr4 2666 out of the box
2:27 and offers improved power delivery both
2:30 things that required some tweaks even to hardware
2:34 and so i don't know like maybe this is
2:37 worth making a video about like coaching people on how to watch for this stuff
2:41 because anyone who was expecting a 200 series
2:44 board to get a CPU upgrade hasn't been following Intel's pattern over the last
2:49 10 years now AMD's announced long-term support of
2:54 am4 might bring about a change in this
2:57 behavior from Intel but that remains to be seen AMD's history is to sure support
3:03 a socket for a long time but with cpus that nobody really wants to
3:09 upgrade to with all of that said i totally get why
3:14 the people who invested in fancy z270 boards are mad right now
3:19 architecturally coffee lake is more or less just kb lake which itself was more
3:25 or less just sky lake no avx 512 no
3:28 rebalanced smart cash i mean damn we're not even getting a new hd
3:33 graphics chip not that i cared about that although hooray for hdcp 2.2 i
3:38 guess so that doesn't sound very compelling but
3:42 what is is that we are finally getting a six core Intel chip on the mainstream
3:48 platform and at mainstream prices
3:52 but there's more it's not just a six core chip which is
3:58 kind of what i would have expected them to do the entire core i7 and core i5
4:04 lineup are getting the hex treatment complete with additional cash and this
4:09 is all at roughly the same TDP as the previous generation
4:14 so if you're upset about that
4:18 then i'm glad because this is a good thing
4:21 we all used to get upset about every new
4:26 hardware generation but it's okay salt
4:29 can taste good you know it's like
4:32 oh like this is what it feels like when oh
4:37 that's awful ah oh
4:48 why is this even in here okay i'm sorry
4:52 so this this is what it feels like when
4:55 technology is actually advancing just
4:59 oh now there are new core i3s too but those
5:04 are kind of boring and we didn't get samples so let's get to performance of
5:08 the chips that we have we are going to be doing a lot of
5:12 testing this time around because this is potentially a huge single generation
5:17 leap in performance so we cracked open our previous generation
5:22 Intel rig our current gen ryzen and threw in core i9 and Threadripper for
5:26 good measure so get your yee haws ready
5:30 because it's gun be one heck of a
5:33 shootout and the core i7 8700k comes out guns
5:39 blazing in our 1080p gaming tests it predictably trades blows at the top of
5:44 the heap with its predecessor depending on per game multi-threaded optimization
5:48 curiously it seems to fare slightly worse overall
5:52 but it's nothing to cry about more interesting is the core i5 8400
5:59 riding into town with 7700k like performance at an i5 price
6:06 as for our 4k gaming tests well
6:09 these are some super boring if beautiful and high resolution graphs
6:15 there is a reason that Anthony coined the term the great equalizer for 4k in
6:19 the core i9 extreme edition video everything performs the same when the
6:23 GPU is the bottleneck synthetic gaming benchmarks tell a similar story
6:28 moving on to productivity oh boy
6:32 the core i7 8700k kills it here easily surpassing ryzen in
6:38 multi-threaded tests and even approaching the core i9 lineup thanks to
6:42 its higher core clocks and it even
6:45 decisively snatches the single threaded crown from its predecessor thanks to its
6:51 higher turbo and extra cash as for the core i5 8400 its lack of
6:56 hyper threading does hurt it here compared to its competitor the ryzen 5
7:00 1600. and since rise and chips are
7:04 unlocked that gap could widen with overclocking
7:08 thermals are not that great for the 8700k
7:13 although this seems to be at least partially a firmware bug since when
7:16 overclocked we actually got lower readings
7:20 and power consumption is higher than the last gen but
7:23 nothing like the hedt and workstation chips that we've been reviewing recently
7:29 let's talk overclocking it's pretty simple and there's plenty of
7:33 fine control including per core over clocks
7:36 at five gigahertz yes my friends five
7:39 gigahertz six cores we managed a pretty decent improvement in performance on our
7:44 8700k giving it similar headroom to our
7:48 7700k across the board
7:51 though as always your mileage may vary bringing us to value and it's here that
7:56 coffee lake shines when system cost is accounted for
8:00 compared to kb lake the core i7 8700k is
8:04 on par for gaming so it's good but
8:07 at over a hundred dollars less than that the core i5 8400 is the one that's going
8:12 to be really disruptive be it for gamers
8:16 or entry-level content creators in productivity the two actually switch
8:21 places the 8700k takes the crown here
8:25 while the 8400 sits in the back seat next to ryzen
8:29 overall though both of the new Intel chips sit pretty
8:33 at the top of the pile so
8:37 was coffee lake a last minute response to ryzen
8:40 in some respects uh pricing not to mention the decision to move the i5 line
8:45 up to six core it might be
8:49 we don't know how good Intel's you know corporate espionage is you know maybe
8:54 they knew ryzen was going to be good a year and a half two years ago when
8:58 they would have had to start working on this or maybe they didn't
9:01 whatever was the case this release is a major performance win for the consumer
9:08 and you know what else is a win for the consumer joining dollar shave club
