0:00 with black friday coming up it's the time of year to spend your hard-earned
0:05 money on gaming upgrades manufacturers know this well and the last quarter of
0:10 the year is typically so chock-full of
0:13 new products and promotions that it can become impossible to keep track of them
0:17 all so with all the different options out there how do you figure out which car
0:22 delivers the best value for your dollar
0:25 well you could spend a few days
0:29 compiling the mother of all benchmarking data spreadsheets
0:33 or you could just watch this video because we kind of did all the work for
0:37 you just like tunnelbear does all the work
0:40 of setting up a vpn for you to try tunnelbear for free go to tunnelbear.com
0:45 LTT we've got that linked below
0:58 if you don't feel like watching the rest of this honestly that's fine we've got
1:02 recommendations for 1080p 1440p and 4k
1:07 60fps gaming linked in the description below
1:10 if you want to learn about how we got to those conclusions then watch on just
1:15 like last year we need to start by defining value
1:18 value is not determined by price alone but by how much performance you get for
1:25 that price so we might recommend expensive cards
1:30 that you wouldn't consider affordable and still be able to call them a great
1:35 value next we need to ensure that for every
1:38 recommendation in this guide the real world performance that you'll get will
1:42 actually be enough for the resolution you want to run your games at if we just
1:47 looked at value by itself we could end up telling you to go buy a
1:52 seven dollar el cheapo graphics card that gets
1:55 two frames per second that would be fantastic FPS per dollar
2:01 but a terrible gaming experience so what would be the freaking point
2:07 on that subject we are going to be focusing then on three main categories
2:11 of gamer all at high detail settings 1080p 1440p and 4k which is why you
2:17 actually won't then see any budget card recommendations they weren't able to
2:22 meet our minimum performance requirements regardless of how great of
2:26 a value they were so our methodology for finding the best
2:29 values out there was pretty similar to last year now due to how cards clock
2:34 speeds are determined these days with heavy emphasis on automatic tuning
2:39 that's done through GPU boost we will not be focusing on the minimal
2:44 performance deltas that might exist between vendor a's gtx 1080 and vendor m's gtx
2:52 1080 because even a factory overclocked
2:55 1080 GPU on the fancy gigantic card is
3:00 going to end up a lot closer to a normal
3:04 founder's edition 1080 than it will to a
3:07 like 1080 ti something with a completely different GPU and this general rule is
3:13 true throughout both AMD and NVIDIA's lineups as for which gpus
3:19 we looked at we limited ourselves to ones that are actually available for
3:23 purchase brand new directly from a large reputable seller so we picked the three
3:28 lowest priced models of each one from amazon and newegg then averaged them so
3:33 that we could be confident that you can actually go buy something at about the
3:37 pricing we're using in our value calculations
3:40 we specifically left out used hardware and the reason for that is because while
3:45 an older gen card can often be an excellent value and deliver decent
3:49 performance at the same time it won't be covered by warranty in all but a few
3:53 cases and not everyone's comfortable with that and we've actually run into
3:57 situations before where we've gone and recommended some second-hand hardware
4:02 only to see the demand and therefore pricing shoot up shortly after we
4:06 publish our video okay with me so far
4:10 now let's talk about our performance metrics
4:13 obviously testing over 40 cards at three
4:17 resolutions in a wide enough variety of games to give solid recommendations
4:22 wasn't going to be feasible so instead of trying to find the actual frames per
4:27 second of every card in every game like last year we used one card that was
4:32 very likely to show up on performance charts at all three of these resolutions
4:36 from reputable sites like guru 3d and pc perspective and then we logged the
4:42 relative performance of any of our cards that we could find compared to that
4:48 reference then we used that relative performance
4:51 to extrapolate what the expected FPS might be
4:55 now in some cases we had to extrapolate from an extrapolation
5:00 and then everything got a little fuzzy for a while and i think at some point we were
5:05 visited by the spreadsheet fairy
5:08 but anyway the point is it is imperfect
5:13 we know thanks to the amount of data we collected including benchmarks from FPS
5:17 rts and rpg games we're confident that after applying a common sense filter
5:22 like we ignored products outright that will obviously thermal throttle we've
5:26 got a pretty clear picture of which cards will perform consistently better
5:31 and which ones will perform consistently worse
5:34 so at 1080p there are only really a couple of choices for team red the rx
5:39 570 and 580 were far and away the best
5:43 their little brother the rx 560 did manage similar FPS per dollar numbers
5:49 but it wasn't able to consistently deliver a high quality 1080p experience
5:54 as for team green i never thought i'd hear myself say this but
5:58 if all you want is 1080p you can actually save a few bucks the 1063 gig
6:04 is less powerful and has less video memory which hurts it at higher
6:09 resolutions compared to AMD's offerings but it met our performance bar and on
6:14 average we were able to find it for 40 to 50 dollars less
6:18 moving up to 1440p the rx 570 and 580
6:22 once again deliver along with the 1063 gig the highest FPS per dollar by a
6:28 significant margin unfortunately for team green their
6:32 offering just doesn't have enough raw power for us to recommend it here now
6:36 with that said we aren't saying that higher end cards
6:40 are a bad idea at this resolution the gtx 1070 and 1070 ti are our
6:46 recommendations if you want much higher frame rates and fewer stutters and
6:51 you're willing to pay a bit of a premium for it finally for the ballers among you if you
6:56 want a game at 4k at high details 60 FPS
6:59 there's really only one choice the gtx 1080 ti
7:03 anything else other than a titan xp though its FPS per
7:07 dollar would be obviously worse since it performs about the same as a 1080 ti
7:12 would require you to turn down your in-game settings turn down your
7:15 resolution or turn down both in order to reach 60 FPS
7:20 obviously there are other factors to consider when you buy a graphics card
7:24 like NVIDIA's excellent shadow play game recording software that obviously isn't
7:28 supported on AMD cards or polaris's
7:32 efficiency for cryptocurrency mining if you want to make a couple bucks with
7:35 your gaming rig when you're not busy gaming on it and then as to individual cards well the
7:41 design of the board and cooler the length of the warranty and any game
7:44 bundles should also weigh into your decision
7:48 but as i've said before to narrow your search you can find in the description
7:52 of the video three solid choices for each resolution
