0:00 for those who aren't old enough to remember the before times the long long
0:04 ago aka before the internet it used to be that when two people would argue
0:08 about something vitally important like uh which band sang a particular hit from
0:13 the 1980s they would have to settle it by asking a third party dusting off a
0:18 toome of knowledge delivered straight to their door by a handy dandy salesman or
0:23 by simply assuming their friend was wrong as always nowadays if we need to
0:27 know something quickly we take it for granted that we can Bing it and find an
0:31 answer almost immediately sorry I couldn't keep a straight face there we
0:36 take for granted that we can Google it and find an answer almost immediately
0:40 but what even many of our us techno files forget is that the internet didn't
0:46 magically bring with it the ability to find anything in this giant computer
0:50 network and that early neens were basically limited to browsing websites
0:55 they already knew how to access or were able to guess that is until some clever
1:01 programmers decided that information on the internet would be much more useful
1:05 if it were made readily available to people and so the concept of the
1:09 modern-day search engine was born the first generations of search engines were
1:14 a bit cruder than those that we use today and mostly consisted of simple
1:19 website listings with little to no information beyond their basic titles
1:23 but as the information Super Highway began to fill with more and more traffic
1:28 it quickly became clear that websit sites would need to be tracked using a
1:31 slew of methods Beyond titles so bot
1:35 programs known as webcrawlers or spiders were created to automatically scan
1:40 websites for links and content information such as keywords titles
1:44 synonyms access frequency relevancy rating authenticity credibility spam
1:49 content Etc to be cocooned neatly in a
1:52 little web of indexes for users to access by way of a search bar but if all
1:58 it took to create a su uccessful search engine was throwing more stuff into a
2:03 big database then we might still be asking geves for things no the
2:07 programmers and mathematicians who work for top modern search providers are
2:12 constantly devising ways that they can use algorithms to find the most
2:17 important pieces of data that are related to a user's search let's say
2:21 Linus Tech tips so they deliver a bunch of links to that website in a top- down
2:26 fashion as opposed to technology tips about lions or something but even that
2:31 is not enough anymore and the best search engines even use databased
2:36 information they've collected about their users to help deliver better more
2:41 tailored results and while that level of attentiveness is useful in minimizing
2:45 daily hassle such as search times we have to decide at some point if a
2:50 corporation knowing we meant apple and not apple is more important than the
2:55 Privacy that we give up because as many have already realized it's no
2:59 coincidence that the advertisements on every page we visit feature the specific
3:04 new game or PC part that we've been drooling over for some time which o well
3:10 um H this is awkward well which
3:14 normally contains the whatever it is you've been drooling over for some time
3:19 and this entices advertisers into purchasing ad space that directly
3:24 targets users who are interested in their products or services at a premium
3:29 even though in this case it clearly misfired something that helps them
3:32 charge more for the ads since the theory does actually work in practice and
3:37 targeted ads have become so commonplace that from my experience folks are now
3:43 not only more likely to click them but even get bothered when they see
3:47 non-targeted irrelevant website ads go
