0:00 if you've been on the internet in the last couple of months especially if
0:03 you've been looking up news about the Nexus 6 or Android 5.0 Lollipop then you
0:08 may have encountered the term material design and found yourself wondering what
0:11 the devil does that even mean in a nutshell it's new Visual and interactive
0:16 design concept from Google that contrary to how you might initially interpret it
0:20 has nothing to do with this and isn't
0:24 really what I thought it would be either I thought it would be like some kind of
0:27 philosophy where everything needed to look like a real world material like
0:32 titanium and trees or no it's not that at all instead material is more like
0:37 this hypothetical material derp out of
0:40 which all the UI elements buttons icons and themes are constructed and
0:46 constructed is key here because material and I'm going to keep finger quotesing
0:49 that must behave according to a number of guidelines set out in Google's
0:54 material design spec sheet a living document that was created to guide
0:58 artists to to make a more unified look
1:02 for lollipop and presumably other Google products in the future all right then
1:06 lonus so what are these guidelines you say well first much like construction
1:12 paper material can come in many different shapes when you look at it
1:15 head-on but while it's almost flat it is
1:19 solid so it does have a little bit of depth to it all material is exactly 1 DP
1:25 thick even when content is displayed on top of it which is not the same as one
1:29 pixel thick by the way to allow for consistent appearance on high and low
1:33 resolution displays now because material
1:36 has that depth some more rules apply while it can change shape grow shrink
1:41 and be moved and rotated along any axis
1:44 it's solid so you can't click or see through it two pieces can't occupy the
1:49 same space at the same time in the same way that my hands can't occupy the same
1:53 space at the same time one must be above the other and it can't pass through
1:57 other material it also can't bend or F hold all right lonus this is starting to
2:02 sound like a bunch of arbitrary hipster design crap to me why does any of this
2:05 matter well believe it or not design philosophies like this matter more than
2:10 you'd think because material design extends much further than just rules for
2:14 what app layouts and buttons look like it's a whole set of guidelines for how
2:19 we interact with our devices including things like realistic movement
2:23 animations which combined with other techniques for drawing the user's eye to
2:27 the correct part of the screen enables more natural interaction there are also
2:31 color suggestions so every app on your phone or tablet can have its own unique
2:36 visual identity yet be part of a greater hole and even advice for developers
2:40 about how to make sure their product is accessible for users with disabilities
2:44 so while I unfortunately cannot stand here and go into as much depth as I
2:49 could on a topic like this I hope it was enough to explain the importance of
2:53 material designed as a toolkit for app developers to help make the Android
2:57 ecosystem feel well like just that more of an ecosystem as opposed to an
3:02 Eclectic collection of random functionalities all bolted together and
3:07 then stuck into your pocket speaking of an Eclectic collection linda.com is the
3:12 sponsor of today's episode they have thousands of online courses available in
3:16 a wide variety of subjects from business to photography to music production to
3:22 development a quick search for material design unfortunately didn't come up with
3:25 anything today but as it becomes more of a standard I'm sure they will add some
3:30 great instructional content about it or even integrate it into some of their
3:34 other courses because their Library grows with new courses every week and
3:39 every course is taught by an industry expert so you can rest assured that
3:42 you're not just listening to some actor read from a script these are people from
3:46 the field with real upto-date knowledge unlike that Techquickie guy hey who put
3:51 that in there no I'm just kidding you guys plan start at a very reasonable $25
3:55 per month but if you use our Link in the video description to sign up that's linda.com tequ you will get free 7-Day
