0:00 apple's design philosophy has been oh let's be generous and say ambitious
0:05 lately first we had the much smaller
0:08 macbook pro 2016 with its completely
0:11 redesigned low profile key switches that
0:15 don't take too kindly to dust and debris otherwise pretty nice machine then we
0:21 got the imac pro which crammed up to an 18 core processor into a design
0:28 this thin with well predictable thermal results
0:33 and now in 2018 we are getting the oh
0:38 oh shoot hold on
0:42 sorry now we get to see what happens
0:46 when you cram a core i9 into a chassis
0:50 this small and oh hold on a second what's this
0:54 don't forget the sponsor spot Colton oh right mack weldon
0:59 mack weldon makes great underwear t-shirt socks wallets and more they
1:02 believe in simple shopping and if you use code tech tips you'll get 20 off
1:07 through the link below
1:17 whether you use your macbook pro for coding 3d animation or just for browsing
1:22 facebook you've probably been wondering why the heck apple was taking so long to
1:28 embrace Intel's 8th gen cpus with their dramatically higher performance and
1:32 greater core counts well as it turns out they were cooking
1:36 up something that on the surface looks the same
1:40 same aluminum chassis same touch bar whether you love or hate
1:45 it and same lack of full-sized usb ports
1:48 although i'm all equipped with dongles now at this point anyway
1:52 but then when you get under the hood is actually really different from the last
1:57 generation the machine now responds to hey siri commands
2:01 what's the weather like outside
2:06 the keyboard got a membrane to keep dirt and debris out of the switches the
2:10 display as retina as ever gets true tone
2:13 sensors so that it will actually adapt to ambient lighting
2:17 personally not a fan but to each their own and those same four Thunderbolt 3
2:22 ports are now running Intel's new titan ridge controller which means support for
2:26 higher resolution monitors with displayport 1.4
2:30 though it should be noted that is only on macbook pros that are equipped with
2:34 dedicated graphics cards this is Intel's fault because they still haven't added
2:37 displayport 1.4 to their onboard gpus
2:41 getting back to performance then let's go even deeper now we opted for a nearly
2:47 top spec model with 32 gigs of ddr4 RAM
2:52 so it turns out they could do that they just needed to put a slightly bigger
2:56 battery in it because upgrading down the line will not be an
3:00 option since the memory is soldered directly to the logic board we also went
3:04 for a 512gb SSD that again will
3:08 hopefully be enough forever because this too is soldered directly to the board
3:13 and this is for us anyway where the controversy
3:16 actually really starts with this machine
3:20 so the 2018 macbook pro includes the same t2 encryption chip that we saw on
3:26 the imac pro which in and of itself is not a bad thing we're we're pro
3:31 encryption and pro user privacy around here
3:34 the problem is the specific way they're doing it so
3:38 instead of making the SSD a self-contained swappable module with
3:44 encryption hardware built onto that
3:47 apple has integrated the whole thing into the motherboard
3:52 so the work around for this used to be
3:55 that if your motherboard died there was a special data recovery port that was
4:01 wired into the SSD portion of the motherboard and you could use that to
4:05 pull the data off of an otherwise dead logic board for transfer
4:10 but then apple went ahead and they removed that port in this model
4:15 so what that means is that as far as we know right now
4:20 if any motherboard component causes a
4:23 system failure without taking your logic board to
4:26 someone like louis rossman for diagnostics and re-soldering something
4:30 that apple does not endorse doing and that even assumes that such a fix is
4:35 possible you are completely sol on getting any of
4:40 your data back from a dead logic board
4:43 machine now time machine which thankfully is really
4:48 awesome will prevent most catastrophic data loss but
4:53 it's just something to be aware of because it's still possible that if
4:56 you're on the road a lot something could get lost in the mix if your machine were
5:00 to fail for any reason bringing us then to our last component
5:04 selection the top of the line core i9 mobile processor so thanks to its higher
5:09 core clocks and extra cash not to mention it's six course if you're into
5:14 programming editing video or rendering complex 3d
5:18 scenes this is the option you would obviously want to choose
5:22 except that reports of performance
5:25 crippling thermal throttling began to roll in almost as soon as the first
5:30 macbook 2018 box was opened and we
5:33 actually saw it firsthand in our recent live stream we're at 100 degrees
5:39 once the workload started it took only seconds for our processor to be running
5:44 well below its base advertised clock
5:47 speed and then it only took another day or two
5:50 for Intel to remove the tool that we were using to monitor the situation from
5:54 their website for some definitely not pr related reason
5:59 some folks were even reporting lower performance than the last gen macbook
6:04 pro in adobe premiere now
6:07 apple has since issued and oops we didn't notice this product was
6:11 fundamentally broken firmware update to address the situation so what we figured
6:16 we'd do is put that to the test we'll be comparing our macbook pro 2018
6:21 against a reference desktop and two other core i9 equipped laptops one with
6:27 a similar form factor to the macbook and another with ample cooling to show us
6:32 well how you could really expect a core i9 to perform with adequate cooling
6:37 as usual we'll kick things off with our gaming results not too many gaming
6:42 benchmarks i mean it is a mac actually these results are not too shabby
6:46 considering that the ASUS zenbook pro rocks a faster gtx 1050 ti GPU and it
6:52 looks like our Radeon pro 560 in here
6:55 performs roughly equivalent to our desktop rx 550
7:00 in this thermal package which of course raises the question
7:04 how much better could it do with a proper cooler
7:08 we'll get to that but first let's look at productivity
7:11 this is interesting our 2018 macbook pro with the fix
7:17 supplied closely matches or even beats our other
7:22 core i9 machines in CPU heavy workloads like adobe premiere and blender
7:28 but only in macOS
7:31 in Windows 10 using bootcamp which
7:34 remember is an apple supported solution it falls way behind
7:39 so is this a matter of macOS taking better
7:43 advantage of Intel's speed shift technology than Windows does
7:48 maybe our recorded temperatures will help us paint a clearer picture here
7:53 very interesting so for starters calling what they did a
7:57 firmware fix is a little disingenuous since firmware is typically os agnostic
8:03 and what apple has done clearly only works in macOS at this
8:08 time so in Windows the 2018 macbook pro is
8:12 idling cooler than ASUS's similarly equipped zenbook pro but then it
8:18 immediately drops to its lowest power state when a heavy load is applied
8:22 just like before the fix the good news is that on macOS both the
8:28 frequency and power curve are much smoother with no throttling whatsoever
8:34 making this a much more usable machine i mean it's mostly good news because the
8:40 thing to keep in mind then is that all that apple's really done here then
8:44 is maybe apply a new fan curve along with TDP and clock speed limiting to the
8:50 processor that manages to help it avoid constant performance killing power state
8:54 changes they are still allowing the CPU to run
8:59 at 97 degrees as measured in an
9:02 air-conditioned office the problem though is
9:06 that's all they really can do at this point since opening up the device with
9:11 an ifixit kit made it immediately obvious that they haven't redesigned the
9:15 thermal solution here to handle the new 45 watt core i9 CPU
9:20 which isn't to say that they were helpless for the last two years during
9:24 the development of this laptop there's clearly things they could have done
9:28 but we don't even entirely blame apple for this there is an industry-wide
9:32 problem that exists right now where laptop manufacturers are installing high
9:38 performance processors in devices that
9:41 they are designing to either thermal
9:44 throttle and or run at unreasonable
9:48 temperatures like i i get it i get the appeal of
9:53 marketing top of the line specs in an amazingly thin package
9:59 and technically 97 degrees is lower than
10:03 the t-junction of a hundred degrees for a modern Intel CPU but i mean if you
10:08 were a pc tech back in the Intel prescott days you'll remember
10:13 running anything this hot is not cool
10:18 pardon the pun and over time will absolutely cause board warping or worse
10:25 which as we mentioned before when we talked about this is where the
10:29 controversy starts comes with significant data loss implications on
10:34 this particular product and this is all something that i
10:38 wouldn't consider ideal on a consumer product and i certainly don't consider
10:43 ideal on a professional one
10:46 so let us know in the comments do you agree
10:49 do you disagree has the pro become a meaningless word
10:54 for more expensive i want to know your thoughts
