0:00 we've done a lot of liquid cooling over the years ranging from super jank diy to
0:04 aios to all the way up to subzero
0:08 chiller units but there are still some things that
0:11 we've never messed with until now
0:15 going full hard mode with copper
0:18 rather than plastic tubing it's a lot of work and the learning
0:23 curve looks a little something like this but boy oh boy is the end result ever
0:28 shiny Corsair's vengeance RGB pro series
0:31 overclocked memory utilizes dynamic multi-zone RGB lighting to light up your
0:35 rig check it out at the link below
0:46 so the first question is why
0:50 why would we do something like this i mean it's good to try new things but
0:55 aside from that is there any reason to
0:58 use metal tubing copper or otherwise
1:01 truthfully other than looks no
1:05 so if you're only worried about cooling performance it's probably best to stay
1:09 with inexpensive soft plastic tubing because as i demonstrated during
1:13 scrapyard wars 2 even a massive coil of
1:16 copper tubing doesn't dissipate much heat so
1:20 the relatively small runs in your case won't make a measurable difference
1:25 so then with that out of the way let's get started the case dictates a lot of
1:29 the other components that you might choose for a build like this so that
1:33 came first we chose the refreshed lialee
1:36 pc011 dubbed the dynamic for its
1:39 all-white interior tempered glass side and front panels and its spacious trunk
1:45 which makes it perfect for hiding tubing and cables next up is the actual gaming
1:49 bits for once here we're actually going to take a step back from insanity and
1:54 just build a respectable color coordinated high-end gaming machine that
1:59 is without an extreme edition CPU and titan graphics card so we opted for
2:04 Intel's 8700k one of the best processors for gaming made it to an ASUS z370a
2:10 prime the whitest board in their lineup for this chip RAM then was an easy pick
2:15 as the best looking light RAM on the market imo is Corsair's vengeance RGB in
2:20 white of course for our graphics card we would have loved to use the latest gtx
2:24 rtx excuse me rtx 2080 ti
2:28 but water blocks weren't quite available yet when we started this build so we
2:31 went with the next best thing a 1080 ti which is still a very powerful card and
2:37 significantly more affordable which meh if you told me a year ago i'd be calling
2:42 a 1080 ti more affordable
2:46 anywho for storage we opted for a 512
2:49 gig samsung 960 pro as our boot drive with a couple of iron wolf pros and the
2:53 pc-011's rear butt flap for storage
2:56 which brings us to water cooling where things get a little more unusual
3:01 now one of the manufacturers that we featured in our cheap aliexpress water
3:06 cooling video barrow actually makes some really cool case
3:11 specific water distribution slash
3:14 reservoir blocks and they happened to have one for the pco11
3:19 so that one was an easy buy then for the rest of the system we
3:23 requisitioned a bunch of goodies from our friends over at ek going for mostly
3:28 their standard affair stuff including their previous flagship supremacy evo
3:32 CPU block a full cover 1080ti GPU block
3:36 a couple of their slim 360 millimeter radiators and then a metric boatload of
3:40 fittings now sadly while we were able to use
3:44 their straight 16 millimeter hard-line fittings these are the same ones that
3:48 you need for plastic tubing by the way they still don't have 90 degree fittings
3:53 so we needed to paint our own with everything dry fitted the next step was
3:57 sanding the fittings and radiators with a sanding block for optimal paint
4:01 adhesion oh and before you guys head to the comments below yes we masked off the
4:06 radiator fins an extra layer of paint isn't going to destroy your rad but it's
4:10 not ideal for thermals either now let's get back to the star of the show the
4:16 copper tubing there are actually
4:19 way more different types of copper tubing and pipe than i expected be it
4:25 coiled straight soft hard or whatever
4:28 combination of the four of them but you actually don't need to worry
4:31 about any of that because we already went out and spent the money to figure
4:35 out which one's best so that you don't have to initially we thought that coiled tubing
4:41 would be our best bet this kind of copper is pre-annealed
4:45 which means that in the factory the pipe was heated up red hot then cooled to
4:50 soften the metal now for materials like steel if you
4:54 quench the metal after heating it actually hardens it making it great for
4:58 use in tools for example but with copper
5:01 heating then immediately cooling it actually softens it making it perfect
5:07 for bending or so we thought in practice even with a
5:12 fancy patented straightening tool like this one from eastwood the tube never
5:17 ends up all that straight and it's got little bumps and blemishes all over it
5:23 so coiled tubing wouldn't work for the clean aesthetic
5:26 that we wanted a better choice ended up being straight
5:30 hard half inch diameter copper pipe which it's called half inch but it
5:35 actually has a 5 8 inch outer diameter
5:38 one really important note here though is that you'll want to use the slightly
5:42 more expensive type k pipe its walls are
5:45 a little bit thicker which makes it easier and cleaner to bend
5:49 from here the process is actually pretty similar to regular hard-line tubing each
5:53 run starts with roughly estimating the length of the run with a little bit of
5:57 extra on each end and cutting the pipe with our pipe cutter the one that you're
6:01 looking at now by the way will run from our CPU block to the barrow distribution
6:05 block then because we do still need to anneal the copper before we can bend it
6:10 our tube needs to be heated up for a minute or two we used a matte gas torch
6:15 now it's really important here for the part that you intend to bend to get
6:19 visibly hot and it should be noted that it actually
6:23 doesn't have to all be that same hot color at the same time so once you see
6:28 it starting to get red you can begin to work your way around
6:31 once you're done you can quench the pipe in a bucket of water and then freak out
6:36 a little over the gross discoloration that you'll be spending the next few
6:40 hours dealing with with a piece of sandpaper and some polish now we didn't
6:44 do it this way hindsight is 20 20 as they say but we'd recommend that you do
6:48 the bulk of your sanding before you bend the pipes because it is a lot easier to
6:54 sand and polish a straight pipe than a bent one
6:58 as they say anywho now it's bending time
7:02 since these are just single 90 degree bends thanks to our
7:06 fancy pants distribution block we don't really need to mark out our bend and we
7:11 can just kind of go for it i'd recommend for a bender that you get something with
7:14 a fairly large radius like this one that we got on ebay for 50 bucks
7:19 smaller radius benders can you know give you a tighter bend obviously but they
7:24 can also cause some pretty severe crushing creating flat spots on your
7:28 bends that will be very noticeable especially if you go for a smooth
7:32 polished look on your pipes we ended up initially filling our pipes with sand to
7:36 help them retain their shape during the bend but it turned out later that this
7:40 wasn't necessary for us though if you're having issues it might be worth a try
7:45 the process was honestly pretty rinse and repeat from here so
7:48 um i guess let's watch a fancy time lapse then of Jake bending and fitting the
7:53 pipes
8:02 one more pro tip here by the way if you already sanded your pipes and you want
8:05 to keep them as scratch free as possible we'd recommend putting some grease on
8:09 the mating surfaces of the bender at this point all the painted parts were
8:13 dry and we could get into installation of the finished parts
8:16 first was our CPU block with a white painted hold down plate and RGB shroud
8:21 then we installed our GPU back plate our nicely painted white radiators and the
8:26 custom 3d printed pump top for our ddc pump we actually didn't have the
8:30 appropriate o-ring for mounting to the distribution block so this was fun we
8:35 ended up making use of some high-temp silicone which worked surprisingly well
8:40 wow looking good all done right no
8:44 because we were dumb and didn't pre-sand it it all has to come out again for
8:49 sanding and then polishing and i won't bore you with every detail but the basic
8:54 process for us involved sanding each pipe with a fairly rough 400 grit
8:59 sandpaper then polishing with some brasso this gave us a pleasing brushed
9:03 finish that we really liked because the high shine polish style tubing didn't
9:08 really fit the look we were going for or the time frame that we were going for
9:13 for this build by the way we'd recommend sealing the tubes with something like
9:17 brass lacquer when you're done as the polish doesn't do much for preventing
9:20 tarnish now for final assembly we mounted our tubes again ran our sexy
9:25 cablemod pro cable kit made it to our supremely reasonable rm750x power supply
9:31 and hoped for the best pga lights on now that's good yeah
9:36 there we go once the RAM issues were resolved it
9:40 actually did end up working and the fill went pretty smooth with only one small
9:44 leak Jake forgot to put the o-ring back on one of the CPU fittings bringing us
9:48 finally to the moment you've been waiting for that sweet sweet minute of jaw-dropping
9:53 b-roll of what may be our most beautiful system yet
10:45 and that's how you water cool with copper pipe we're probably never going
10:49 to do it again but if you want to go for it then you know what i say
10:53 fill your boots have some fun tear your hair out a little yeah
10:59 everyone's got their everyday grooming routines showering brushing their teeth
