0:00 the thinkpad x1 carbon is the suit of laptops with its thin tailored bezels
0:05 and stark black back with a logo pocket square accent
0:11 bringing it out of your bag says you don't have time for someone to be
0:15 late and that the meeting notes you take will be both somehow exceptionally
0:19 thorough and concise but is the x1 just a suit or is there
0:25 more substance behind it
0:28 like the substance bringing you this video zotac's mech one gaming pc it's
0:33 ultra slim and features a sleek robotic style design check it out at the link
0:37 below to learn more that's not really a substance is it's
0:41 more of a product
0:52 the build quality of the thinkpad x1 carbon is exceptional with a very stiff
0:56 chassis especially considering how light it is and it's got plastics that feel
1:02 soft and good on the hands the overall
1:07 feel of it is more like a tool or a piece of equipment which might not
1:11 appeal to folks who gravitate towards prettier devices like the surface laptop
1:16 or dell xps but will to others and
1:20 you know who you are you're the kind of person who wants a thinning light but
1:24 also still wants to plug stuff into it
1:27 and that's what we've got a smattering of type a and type c usbs Thunderbolt 3
1:33 HDMI and Ethernet with pass through to
1:37 their proprietary dock a very important feature for accessing your corporate
1:42 network when you are docked performance wise you've got the pick of the litter
1:46 with 8th gen Intel u-series processors from a core i5 all the way up to the
1:51 core i7 8650u although it should be noted that lenovo
1:56 tuned the CPU in their top config to 15
2:00 watts so dell's xps 13 actually performs
2:04 better with a lower tier processor
2:07 though not by much over a half hour stress test the
2:11 thinkpad x1 carbon reached around 90 degrees which is a little on the hot
2:15 side but wasn't enough for it to thermal throttle putting it ahead in performance
2:19 of basically every other thin and light that we've tested
2:23 and the keyboard that's another strong point with its long 18 millimeter key
2:28 travel and super satisfying tactile bump
2:31 it's a solid contender for best notebook keyboard on the market
2:36 compared to say the macbook pro i don't think i can actually hit the same peak
2:40 speed for short bursty messages but if i
2:44 had to type for hours i would much rather use the x1 which i can easily do
2:51 with its over six hours of battery life and while we're praising the keyboard
2:55 isn't it about time that somebody put snipping tool on the print screen button
3:01 now the trackpad this is also good
3:05 but maybe not as excellent the tracking and feel is solid and satisfying but
3:11 pulling out the macbook pro for comparison reminded me how nice it would
3:15 be if i could click on the whole thing
3:18 and how small it is
3:21 like i realized that the options are
3:24 either a small track pad or
3:28 a mouse nipple so it's not a simple choice but i'm
3:33 personally not a track point guy so nah sorry
3:37 sorry everyone but i would actually like to see that
3:41 vertical space used another way
3:44 now there are two screen options that really stick out with the x1 with the
3:48 most interesting being the new 2560 by 1440 glossy finish with HDR like
3:57 look at them side by side even dang this thing is nice to look at
4:01 at this size you really don't need 4k
4:04 but the extra sharpness at 1440p
4:07 is more than welcome then the colors brightness and black levels all blew me
4:14 away which is all fine and good if you're buying a laptop for watching movies
4:19 but given how um
4:22 how do i put this gently bad yeah yeah
4:25 that's the word i was looking for bad uh the speaker sound
4:29 movies are probably not what you want this for you wanted to use between nine
4:34 and five so actually out of the two displays we
4:37 tried the 1080p with touch is the one
4:41 that got the most use its matte finish is great when you have to work under
4:45 fluorescent lights and i'm never going to turn down the opportunity to navigate
4:50 using my screen unfortunately
4:53 i do really like unlocking my computer with my face and facial recognition sign
4:59 in is only available on the higher res
5:02 model forcing me to use the fingerprint reader to the right of the trackpad
5:07 which by the way is the wrong place
5:10 anywhere but the power button these days is the wrong place
5:15 though to lenovo's credit while their reader isn't as fast as the dell xps or
5:20 the lg gram it uses match on chip
5:23 technology for an additional layer of security so i won't be docking any
5:27 points what i will be docking points for though
5:31 is the webcam i do like the additional security of
5:37 being able to just flip it shut so that no one can be
5:40 spying on me in the event that uh my computer is compromised but
5:46 when it isn't disabled quite frankly it is just not good enough for a webcam in
5:52 2018 especially on a business sku that
5:56 is presumably going to be used for conference calls
6:00 taking apart the thinkpad x1 carbon is pretty easy
6:04 but doesn't give you access to a whole lot of upgrade options the storage is
6:09 upgradeable which is nice but the RAM is
6:12 not so make sure you grab enough when you're buying
6:16 though now that i think about it should you buy
6:19 one of these the pricing makes a clear recommendation
6:24 here actually kind of difficult at regular price
6:28 it is a big fat
6:31 no but lenovo was really cagey about
6:35 whether the promotional prices on their website
6:39 were actually promos or if they were just attempts to make you feel like
6:43 you're getting a special deal every day so
6:46 if the price you pay is closer to what was on the site when we were shooting
6:50 this about 13.50 to start that is still
6:54 more than an xps but for business use the sim slot could
7:00 massively improve productivity in the field and then back in the office the x1
7:04 will make the it department happy as a clam 2. when it's connected to the dock
7:09 Mac Address passthrough pxe boot and wake on lan along with all of the
7:14 additional security features superfish notwithstanding will allow your company
7:18 to be productive during the day and sleep well at night
