0:01 And we're live. So, I promised a special guest, and I should
0:06 probably deliver the special guest a little bit earlier than I had
0:09 anticipated because it looks like he's starting to get a little bit cranky.
0:12 Come here, sweetheart. Come on. Oh, his
0:16 mom's handing him to me. There we go. So, for those of you who haven't been
0:21 following me on Twitter, so if you haven't seen uh my baby yet, because
0:26 I've posted quite a few videos of him, but I have them unlisted on YouTube, so
0:30 only really the uh the Twitter followers are seeing them for the most part when I
0:34 post the links. This is my baby boy. He is, what is the date today? He'll be six
0:39 months old in two days, and that makes
0:42 him five months. And
0:49 28 or 29 days old. So, this is what he
0:53 looks like. The only reason that he's joining us tonight is because he is a
0:57 brat. This is what he looks like and he was supposed to have gone to bed is because
1:02 he Yeah, you were supposed to have gone to bed. You want to tell me about why you're not in bed? Supposed to have gone
1:06 to bed. Oh, he's looking at the looking at the monitor here, which is
1:09 You want to tell me about Are you Are you transfixed by Twitter?
1:15 Is that going to be your favorite thing to do when you're older? You know what? They'll probably have a new thing. They
1:19 probably won't have Twitter anymore. Is that going to be your favorite thing to
1:22 do when you're older? You know what? His eyes are starting to get tired. Hopefully his mom can Yes. Oh, wait. I
1:28 have another tab open. What tab? Hold on. Hopefully his mom can What's the
1:32 problem? Oh, wait. I have another tab. What tab?
1:35 Hold on. Problem. Oh, wait.
1:38 There we go. Should be good. Nope. It's not echo. It's because the uh
1:43 the system still had sound on. I had to mute the sound.
1:47 No, it's not echo. Are we good? Because the uh the system there's such a delay on the on the
1:51 stream that it's hard for us to know if
1:54 it's good. No, it's not good.
1:58 Okay, hold on a minute.
2:02 Not fixed. Uhoh. Hold on a minute. Okay,
2:05 now we have a problem. Not
2:09 uh here. Can you take him for a second? Now we have a problem. Here you go.
2:13 Hold on. Let me just see. Is this still monitoring? Here you go.
2:19 Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Sounds off. Is this still monitoring?
2:23 Do I have multiple Hello. Hello. Hello.
2:26 Okay. Hold on. Hold on, guys. Hold on. Do I have multiple?
2:29 I moved everything around tonight. Okay. Hold on. Hold on, guys. Hold on.
2:34 Do I moved everything around tonight? How about now?
2:37 Hold on. Hold on, guys. Still have an echo. I moved everything around.
2:42 How about now? How about now? Are we good? No.
2:47 What do you mean it's worse? It's only left ear. Okay, that that
2:52 mean it's worse. It's only
2:58 worse. Uh, wait. Here's an idea. Hold on. We'll try
3:03 this. Uh, wait. How about now? Is there
3:07 still an echo? Still an echo. Hold on. I'm going to
3:12 switch the uh switch the sound back. So,
3:15 it should be both on input one.
3:19 Do we not have an echo anymore? We good? Okay. Six. Yes. Baby back.
3:26 Baby back. Baby back. Baby back. Baby back. There we go. So, do you want to
3:30 give the the uh the Twitch audience and maybe some YouTube people who are
3:35 watching and wherever else from all over the internet that uh that all these
3:40 people are are tuning in from? Maybe give them a nice big smile. Just wants
3:45 to stare at the screen. He's watching the Twitch chat, which quite frankly is
3:48 usually pretty inappropriate for babies
3:51 because of the kind of stuff you guys are putting in there. And he's starting
3:56 to get tired. So, for those of you who don't have babies already, when they
3:59 start to rub their eyes and their ears, that means they are starting to get
4:03 tired. Yes, he does have a big diaper. It is because he's wearing cloth
4:08 diapers. So, we have a diaper service that's uh actually cheaper than
4:13 disposables. And cloth diapers are pretty expensive to buy these days. So,
4:18 that's why we decided to go with that route because we don't know how many
4:21 babies we're having, and it's cheaper to rent them than to buy them. So, there
4:27 you go. Yeah, Eco Linus. No, more like practical Linus. Um,
4:33 let's see if there's anyone who's sending in any messages on Twitter. We
4:37 can just kind of see what's going on over there. I'm just going to change my
4:42 scene here. 26 new interactions. Holy
4:45 smokes. Hey, Linus. It's Flip. Okay. Hi,
4:49 Flip. I'm wondering how do you split your screen between the camera and your
4:52 computer screen in XSplit? Um, well, I
4:56 use XSplit to to add additional things
4:59 and then you just kind of resize them. They have a video about it. So, it's
5:02 pretty pretty straightforward. And what else we got? I was IP banned from Twitch
5:08 and I don't know why. Well, if you um if
5:11 you tweet John's well, his Twitter
5:15 handle is John's Fatcock. If you tweet him, you can probably ask uh Lionus for
5:19 gaming with games with amazing graphics like BF3 and Metro 2033 670 or 7950 with
5:25 the latest drivers from AMD. I don't know if you guys have seen this yet, but
5:28 AMD released new drivers that are just
5:32 balling. We're looking at 10 15% performance improvements in modern games
5:37 with their Southern Islands family of cards. So that's all the Radeon 7000
5:43 series cards. Now you can see what's got him transfixed now is the Microsoft
5:48 Surface. He loves phones and he
5:51 especially seems to like the Microsoft Surface right now. So this will be the
5:56 first footage on the internet of a baby
6:00 using Microsoft Surface. Sweetheart, that's not how it works. Okay, hold on.
6:07 Hold on. Hold on. It's pressure sensitive. You got to be careful.
6:12 Hold on. I got to put in the password for you. You know, parental locks and
6:15 all that. This is important. This is how he uses the Surface. I'm not saying that
6:20 you should use it the same way. Um, the pressure sensitive keyboard is uh
6:25 responding well to his gestures,
6:28 which basically amounts to mashing the keyboard. This is a very positive thing
6:33 already about the pressure sensitive keyboard on the surface because if uh if
6:37 this was a real keyboard Oh. Oh, I don't want you to eat that, sweetie. No, no,
6:42 babies are not surfaces are not for baby eating. So, well, nothing's for baby
6:47 eating. Nobody should be eating babies. But, uh, what I meant to say is that
6:51 it's not for babies to eat. That That's really what I meant to say. Okay. Yeah,
6:55 you're typing. See, look at him swiping in the uh the contextual menu there.
7:01 Here, try this. I want you to I want you to swipe in from the side like that. Can
7:04 you do that, sweetheart?
7:08 Okay. Well, he's going to mash the keyboard somewhere. There you go. Okay. Yeah, that's very
7:14 good. You're doing really well.
7:22 That might be the best we're going to get from him in terms of of using the
7:25 surface. Like I said, he's only six months old at this point, you guys. So,
7:28 uh, there you go. That's Yeah, he's he's
7:32 he's like he's all over that here. You know what? Here's an interesting test.
7:36 Okay, sweetie. Which one do you want?
7:39 Surface or iPad. So, let's grab the iPad. Let's put
7:44 something similar on the display. So, let's just uh let's find out if he's
7:48 going to be an Apple fanboy or if he's going to be more of a more of a
7:52 Microsoft home dog. Okay, here we go. Okay, here we go. So,
7:58 I'm going to put the baby between each one and let's see which one he goes for
8:02 here.
8:06 He wants both. Okay, now we know. So, it looks like
8:11 he's just going to be a general technophile just like his dad.
8:17 And I can't take Can't take his eye off that. Okay. So, I think I do want to get
8:20 going with the stream now. So, everyone say bye to our special guest. Can you
8:25 say bye? Can No, you're just going to stare at the surface. He's He's leaning
8:29 on me really hard. He's trying to get over there. Whoa. Yeah. What if we
8:33 dropped it? That would be not so good. Here you go. All
8:38 right, guys. So, thanks for bearing with me here. I know that was more of a
8:42 distraction than anything else, but uh hopefully you enjoyed it as much as I
8:46 did. He had a very good time, I think. What do you think, Mom? Yeah, I'm I'm
8:52 getting the I'm getting the nod over there. I think he enjoyed joining us on
8:55 the stream here. So, as you guys may or
8:59 may not have noticed, I'm in a new set this time. I have a completely new sort
9:04 of thing going on. And honestly, this was a total mess to set up. I'm just
9:10 going to go take over the camera for a second here. Flip it into uh auto mode
9:15 so I can show you guys what I've got going on in the middle of my living room
9:18 right now. It's not pretty, but uh if I can figure
9:24 I can't even figure out how to change this camera from like auto mode to
9:27 manual mode. It's so complicated. Okay, we're in auto mode now. So, that's me.
9:32 There's my mouse pad. Got the uh like the middle cushion folded down on the
9:36 couch. And then this is the monitor I've set up so that I can read tweets this
9:40 week. That was a big problem for me last week. I couldn't actually control the
9:44 computer that I was using to stream the video. So, here is that computer almost
9:49 directly under the camera in my Anttech P280 case. And it's is it zooming in?
9:55 Wow. the weight of the weight of the lens.
9:58 Ah, zoomed it in as IO moved it down there. That's not what I meant to do.
10:03 And that's my sweater. And then here's all the tablets that I have for us
10:07 tonight. So there's the ASUS TF700.
10:10 There's the iPad 2. Don't have an iPad
10:13 3. Not sold on the iPad 3 to be perfectly honest. There's a Surface. And
10:17 then the other one is hiding somewhere I think. Oh yeah. Yeah. It's on the floor
10:22 dome there behind the table. So, oh yes,
10:25 check this out. Check this out. You guys are going to love this. Darth Vader Pez.
10:30 I promise to bring that out later in the stream. And I hope I have this lined up
10:35 right because if I don't, my my wife
10:38 who's holding the baby as well is going to have to try and figure out how to uh
10:44 how to reimulate this at me. Yeah, it's not quite right. My head is cut off. And
10:49 my head is no longer cut off. Excellent. Thank you.
10:53 All right, let's do a little bit of Q&A before we get into what will be the bulk
10:59 of the setup or bulk of the live stream for tonight, which is going to be
11:03 Windows 8, Windows RT, and then with particular emphasis on this tablet
11:08 because cameraman and I actually spent I mean, we obviously haven't had a ton of
11:12 time with it yet, but we spent a couple hours with the Surface today. And
11:16 between the two of us, remember guys, cameraman. I'm talking the original
11:19 cameraman, not Slick, who's an Android aholic, and uh not Diesel, who's also an
11:25 Android kid. Um but the cameraman who's
11:29 the Apple nerd of our sort of rag tag
11:32 group of technopiles. Um he's sold. He's
11:37 like, "Oh yeah, no, this is really good." Um there's some stuff that's not
11:41 perfect. It needs apps. like it needs
11:45 apps. Um, it I mean, you could make an
11:48 argument for a higher resolution screen. I'm not sure I care that much. Um, but
11:54 the way it handles multitasking and the
11:58 productivity potential for this platform, for this device right now is
12:04 just absolutely outstanding because Office makes all the difference in the
12:08 world. I mean, here I'd love to hear from you guys in the Twitch chat or in
12:12 the uh or in the Twitter feed. Who here has ever tried to edit a Google doc
12:18 using an Android tablet or an iOS
12:22 device? It is the stupidest thing in the
12:27 world. You have to like click on the cell in order to edit it and then it
12:31 usually clicks on the cell to the right or above it or below it. It almost never
12:36 clicks on the cell you actually intend. It is so slow. Like it's the slowest
12:41 thing in the world. Working with an office document, working with a document
12:46 is just like you're trying to get something done. There's no reason you'd
12:50 be working with a spreadsheet and you're not trying to get something done. It
12:54 doesn't work that way. And it's the slowest thing in the world. This just
12:59 changes all that. It's smaller than any Ultrabook.
13:02 It is a great touch experience. And I
13:05 I'll talk more about how I feel about touch in general in Windows 8 later, but
13:10 the the touch experience on this is 100 times better than what I'd imagine you
13:15 can get on a desktop. And I'm like, I'm kind of sold. It's expensive. It's not
13:19 cheap. I mean, I'm not uh I'm not necessarily sold on that aspect of it,
13:24 but in fact, it's I wish it was $100
13:28 cheaper. Let's sort of put it that way.
13:32 But it's also not nearly as bad as some
13:35 of the press are making it out to be where they're kind of going, "Oh yeah, if it doesn't have apps, then we might
13:40 as well just all jump off into a river." You know what? It's Microsoft. They will
13:44 get app support. Um, so there's that. And Okay. Okay. No, no, let's do a
13:48 little bit more Q&A and then I'll I'll get into sort of some of my some of my
13:51 rants for the night. Um, one of my rants tonight is going to be the inability for
13:55 people to accept the change that is coming with Windows with Windows 8 with
14:00 the UI. Let's have a look at what some of the Twitter some of the Twitter
14:03 people had to say about uh editing
14:08 documents using it. They had absolutely nothing to contribute about that topic.
14:12 Oh, I agree. It's a nightmare, says Melvin. Melvin is correct. It is a total
14:16 nightmare to make an office. Yes, it was the worst. Yes, you've done it. Okay. Um
14:24 yeah, you know what? At some point I'll try, but not right now. Um, Sean. Okay,
14:30 good question, Sean. No one's ever asked me this before, so I've never really brought it up before. I actually don't
14:34 drink. I might be the only Canadian, like north of the 49th parallel, which
14:39 is sort of where most Canadians are. Um, who who doesn't drink beer, so there you
14:44 go. Um, can I get that adjusted just slightly? It's kind of pointing down a
14:48 little bit and it's sort of awkward. Uh, okay, that's up pretty high. That's
14:52 good. Thank you. Uh, what's the highest overclock I'll get with an H100 and i7
14:57 3770K? Um,
15:00 realistically, anywhere from sort of 4.6 to 5.0 would be very happy. Uh, 4.6 4.8
15:07 is probably the most realistic. Hello Australia to Billy Cool over there. Do I
15:12 think Windows 8 is a good idea for desktop? You know what? That's going to be one of my main topics later on. Um,
15:17 so these are these are going to be my my topics. Uh, Windows 8 touch. How does
15:22 Windows 8 affect gamers? Drive spaces, which I think is very exciting. Surface
15:26 versus iPad versus Android.
15:30 Uh, for me personally, so I will cover that,
15:34 but it's going to be something that I'm going to dive a little bit more into depth into. Um, AMD's new drivers are
15:40 awesome. What's your opinion? They're awesome. I think we can all agree on
15:43 that. How does my wife put up with my mess? Um, it's not actually messy. It's
15:48 just Okay, she's giving me a look right now. You know what? It's probably better
15:52 if I do not answer that question because
15:56 no matter what I say, I will get in the
16:00 trouble and it will not be good for me. So, let's just leave that. Um, darn this
16:08 512 kilobit connection. I'm sorry to
16:11 Jason. Um, you can always watch later on YouTube. Paul wants to know if I can do
16:16 a backflip. All right. I've never been asked to do a stunt before.
16:22 Sorry, I'm still fighting a bit of a nagging cold here, but I'm going to ask
16:25 my lovely wife to operate the camera for me and I will show them the one trick
16:29 that I can do. Okay, here we go. And it will be across
16:34 the cluttered floor full of clutter. Not
16:37 mess. Mess is different from clutter. Mess is like Cheetos, cheesy bags, and
16:41 stuff. This is clutter. This is like necessary cables that I need and diapers
16:46 for my baby that he needs and a baby
16:49 which I obviously need. Isn't that right, sweetheart?
16:59 Isn't that right, sweetheart?
17:04 Okay, so I cannot do a back flip. I have never
17:09 done a back flip. But what I can do is I can walk on my hands. at least I could
17:12 last time I tried. So, I am either going to knock over the $1,500 lights and the
17:18 precarious table that's balanced on something or I'm going to succeed in
17:21 this trick for you all. And I'm not sure which is going to happen. And there goes
17:26 my keys. Okay. Okay. Hold on. Hold on. We're
17:30 going to take we're going to take one more crack at this without the uh not my
17:33 keys. What fell? Okay. One of my keys. Okay. Okay. We're going to try one more
17:37 time. I'm going to try to make it all the way over to the couch. So, here we
17:40 go. Up.
17:47 Uh oh, I'm slipping. Okay, the wires are not going to let me
17:51 pass. But there you go. That is the best I can do. I used to be able to do a
17:55 front handspring, but I can't anymore. And I'm not even going to try that cuz
17:58 it's been a very, very long time since I've made an attempt. A little bit more
18:02 zoomed out. Yep. And a little bit higher. There we go. Thank you.
18:07 All right. baby's starting to get cranky, so hopefully he lasts a little
18:11 bit longer here. Greetings from Indonesia.
18:15 It's Saturday afternoon right here. Perfect time for a live stream. Fantastic. Thank you for that story,
18:20 bro. All right,
18:23 MCL, I am sorry to hear that, man. Um,
18:27 as much as I'm glad that you're watching my live stream right now, I am sorry
18:31 that you no longer have a job. Um,
18:37 uh, the Hey, yes, I believe you can. I
18:40 wouldn't worry too much about that. Ty says, "Love your vids, Lionus." Um, what
18:47 else we got? Get mom in the camera. Mom does not want to go on camera. Remember,
18:52 guys, she had a baby not that long ago. And, uh, yeah, not to mention, she's in
18:57 her jammies, so I think she's not going to want. She's giving me another look.
19:01 You guys are getting me in all kinds of trouble tonight. I hate you guys. You
19:05 suck. All kinds of trouble.
19:10 Um, what is my rank at NCIX? I'm a category
19:14 manager. So, I manage categories and then product managers manage products
19:18 and then sales people sell them. So, kind of like that.
19:23 Uh, do you think we'll see reasonably t priced touchscreen monitors for
19:27 consumers now that Windows 8 has come out? Absolutely. I think we're going to see reasonably priced touchscreen
19:32 monitors. In fact, one of the ones that I'm really excited about is one that I
19:36 did a video on. This is Acer's touchscreen monitor. Acer Windows 8
19:43 MCIX. Let's try let's try that for a keyword. Ah, yes, the T23HL.
19:49 I smartly excited about your fingertips.
19:53 And I'm going to go ahead and it looks like not all of you are extremely
19:56 excited. this monitor.
20:00 This monitor, it has 10point multi-touch and it is just I'm super super stoked on
20:07 that monitor. Um because it comes in at a fairly reasonable price. So, uh yes,
20:14 and we'll see more and more as time goes on. Uh when do you think 790 will be
20:19 released? It's already released. Lotus Fantasy already released, man. Power
20:23 Cololor made a card. They made like 300 of them or something, so no one cares.
20:27 Um, there you go. Why didn't I review the
20:31 GTX 690? Because nobody sent me one. I
20:34 never had one, so I don't uh I mean I can't buy every video card and uh and
20:41 test it because as much as uh as much as you guys would love to believe that the
20:46 YouTubes is sort of made of money and that if you get like a 100,000 views on
20:50 the YouTubes that uh that that trouble
20:54 trouble, you know, doesn't come for you
20:57 and that everything is sort of hunky dory. Um, yeah, you don't you don't get
21:03 that much money for YouTube videos. So, yeah, I can't I can't actually afford
21:07 that. That That's all. That's all. Uh, let's have a look. 44 new
21:13 interactions on the Twitters. You know what? Let's go into our first topic for
21:17 tonight first. Um, so the first topic is
21:20 going to be how does Windows 8 affect gamers?
21:25 Now, this is kind of complicated because
21:28 there's a few different ways that we can go at this. So, number one is how does
21:32 it affect desktop gamers? So, gamers like your traditional gamers, your Quake
21:36 3 gamers, your Team Fortress 2 gamers, your your FPS's, your RTS's, your RPGs.
21:42 I would make the argument that not at all. So, number one is that Windows 7 is
21:48 going to be relevant for a very long time. Windows 7's adoption rate was
21:53 excellent compared to Vista. So what we will likely see is a similar shelf life
21:59 after the newer stuff is out for Windows 7 as we saw with Windows XP. Probably
22:04 not as long as that because remember Windows XP also ran for a much longer
22:08 period of time where it was the where it was the current OS. Um whereas Windows 7
22:14 only ran for around two years. But
22:18 you will see support for the new games coming out with Windows 7. If you're
22:23 already running Windows 7 for a very long time, like years before you'll even
22:29 by the time you would have to upgrade to Windows 8, you don't even Windows 8 will
22:34 be replaced by Windows 9 or Windows 10. Okay, so there's that. Does it affect
22:38 you if you don't even upgrade? Do you have to upgrade? The answer is no in
22:42 both cases. and Windows 7 will support current hardware for a very long time
22:47 because the way that Microsoft licenses a a software package is they license it
22:53 by physical CPU and Windows 7 is perfectly good for one or two CPUs
22:58 depending on uh which copy you have. So,
23:01 okay, physical we're not going to have less than one CPU in a system anytime
23:05 soon. We're probably not going to have more than one physical CPU in a system anytime soon. certainly not more than
23:10 two in a desktop or even a moderate workstation environment. Um, RAM isn't
23:16 going to be a problem for a very long time. There are additions of Windows 7
23:19 that I believe support up to 128 gigs or
23:22 even 256 gigs of RAM. And I apologize
23:26 for not remembering this correctly. Windows 7 uh Pro uh RAM limitation.
23:33 Let's have a look. Let's see what uh let's see what Windows has to Windows
23:37 Microsoft has to say for themselves because I can't remember. Uh, it looks
23:41 like non-page pool something something7 Pro
23:46 supports up to 192 gigs on Windows 7 as
23:50 does Enterprise as does ultimate with home premium being the only one where I
23:55 can imagine that users are going to run into a problem because it is limited to
23:59 16 gigs and we're not that far away from
24:02 being able to utilize 16 gigs or more if you do any sort of um video rendering or
24:09 if you do any kind of 3D rendering. ing or anything like that. Okay, so you
24:13 don't have to upgrade. That's number one. Number two is it's still built on
24:19 the same kernel as Windows Vista. This is something people don't seem to think
24:22 about when they go, "Oh, what will performance be like on Windows 8 and
24:26 games?" It's guys, it's going to be the same as Windows 7, which was the same as
24:31 Windows Vista in spite of all the complaints about Windows Vista. um to to
24:37 within sort of a a margin of error. It's going to be difficult to measure the
24:41 difference in performance between these platforms because ultimately it's based
24:45 on the same underlying platform. Now, Vista performed a little worse than
24:50 seven because there was additional bloat. The the OS was just it was
24:54 bloated. It was demanding on the hardware just running in the background.
24:58 If anything, as long as there isn't some kind of
25:03 dramatic driver incompatibility between the Windows 8 driver and the Windows 7
25:06 driver for your graphics card, or some kind of horrendous thing that happens,
25:10 in general, Windows 8 should, if anything, be faster than Windows 7 due
25:14 to how light it is on the hardware requirements. Remember, even a Tegra 3
25:20 running an allout Windows RTOS, which is
25:24 no less bloated than Windows 8 as far as I can tell is very responsive. So, if
25:29 your computer has that little overhead that it's dealing with on the OS side,
25:34 then I can't imagine any issues there. Okay.
25:38 So, number one, you don't have to upgrade. Number two, you
25:44 Yeah, there's no performance delta. Okay. Number three, and this is almost
25:48 the big one. How will Windows 8 affect
25:51 gamers who are not necessarily married to the
25:57 idea of the hardcore PC game? And I
26:01 would argue that Windows 8 is going to be Is this really not charged? That's
26:06 going to be a problem for me tonight. Try holding it down. Okay. Well, this is
26:10 this is my this is my showcase Android device. Ah, there it goes. Okay. So, my
26:13 Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I love. That's my favorite Android tablet in spite of um
26:20 in spite of there being faster Tiger 3 ones. It's just I just love it. The
26:24 screen is amazing. I love pls screens. Um so iPad 2. So it is going to
26:30 introduce to the Windows ecosystem the potential for games like uh let's see if
26:35 I can find sort of the stupidest lowest common denominator kind of game. Games
26:40 like Papy Jump where ultimately this is it. Will you have to run these? I mean,
26:44 we've already got these games, you know, flashbased browser games. Um, but we're
26:49 going to have easier access to them. So, you know, instead of going on
26:53 neopets.com, ultimately you'll go on, I don't know, the Windows Store. Okay, so
26:58 there's that. Um, and it'll be more
27:01 accessible. It'll also give us access to the newer things that we can do with
27:06 hardware on these kinds of mobile platforms with accelerometers and
27:09 gyroscopes. So, you have more mo more motion control and potentially more
27:15 things that that can be done with it. I'm really excited to see what game devs
27:20 can do with an API that they're used to such as DirectX with hardware that's
27:25 significantly more powerful than anything you'll see on an iPad anytime
27:29 soon or on an Android device where we've got Windows 8 running on tablet-like
27:34 devices or even larger devices with more
27:37 powerful hardware. the kind of I mean the kind of gaming opportunities that
27:42 this opens up um maybe not immediately
27:45 but in the near future are extremely exciting to me. I mean what if you could
27:49 play an RTS? Think of it like this like what this is just the kind of stuff to
27:54 to just to think about before you reject the idea outright. What if your surface
28:00 could have a display on it that is
28:04 that is like the mini map of an RTS that you're playing on the screen in front of
28:08 you like this. And think of it kind of like the Razer Switchblade. Is that is
28:12 that what they call it? Yeah, the Switchblade interface where they've got this touch sensitive interface. What if
28:17 instead of using a mouse for an RTS, you actually used a gigantic touch pad like
28:23 this? Is it doable? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you still want a mouse.
28:27 Maybe you can still use a mouse. Maybe by then we have mice that are optimized
28:31 for use on top of a tablet. So you got your mini map here. You've got a bunch
28:35 of interesting information here. You've got your screen in front of you. And all of a sudden you have that much that much
28:41 more that you can do. Maybe you go as maybe it's as maybe it's as cool as like
28:45 something like where you're like, "Oh crap, freak out time. Everyone retreat."
28:50 And they build in code into the game. So you can go like this with your entire
28:53 tablet and everyone disengages and retreats. I mean, that's the kind of
28:58 thing that that more motion control and more potential for interface and more
29:03 integration between all these different platforms can do. You look at sort of no
29:08 one's close. Android can integrate with your phone. It can integrate with your
29:12 browser, but Google is not going to have
29:15 a desktop OS anytime soon. Apple, you can integrate with your desktop OS. You
29:19 can integrate with your phone. You can integrate with some of your apps, but
29:23 let's face it, they don't have that much on the app side that anyone would care
29:27 about integrating with. And I mean, do
29:30 you really use an Apple desktop? Even if you have an iPhone, I have an iPhone.
29:35 There's nothing special about like like
29:40 this Apple experience that's like, oh, I have to have that. I have to have
29:43 through my desktop. Like, no, I'm not sold on the whole on the whole Apple
29:47 desktop platform. So that will never be
29:50 an option for me. Whereas for me as a Windows user, this whole paradigm is
29:56 very, very exciting. I've heard of a Wii U. Geez, the Twitch chat, these guys.
30:02 So yes, it opens up the potential for casual games on the Windows platform,
30:08 which I mean, come on. I you you can poo
30:11 poo casual games all you want. You can go, "Oh, if it ain't Counterstrike,
30:15 uh, then it ain't nothing." But let's face it, have you ever played Plants and
30:18 Zombies? It's awesome. Um, and what
30:22 about Chrome OS? Chrome OS is just a browser. Get over it. Um, and honestly,
30:28 I'm just not It's kind of what Smart Glass is. So, Smart Glass is another
30:32 example of where we're already there. I'm not that sold on Smart Glass right
30:35 now, just because it there's some latency. It's not perfect. Once we get
30:41 uh a truly perfect wireless HDMI interface that's
30:47 that's fast enough and responsive enough. I mean, I'm all about
30:50 responsive. I'm the kind of person who queued up to buy a dual core on day one
30:56 X2 4400 plus because it was so much more
31:00 responsive. I was all over SSD because I
31:03 want to increase the responsiveness. I have a very hard time moving away from
31:09 the responsiveness that I get with a desktop to something like a cloud
31:13 enabled service. I have a hard time using something wirelessly when I could
31:18 just plug it in with a wire and I could get a way better experience. I'm not
31:22 ready to move away from that yet. So, I'm going to have to wait for myself
31:26 until that maturity level has been reached so that I can use it the way I
31:30 would normally use a desktop PC even now.
31:35 Wow, there's like no viewers tonight. I
31:38 did the uh Did the YouTube thing never go live?
31:44 I actually I actually don't know. I sort of I sort of hope it went live. I hope
31:48 you guys will pardon me for a second here while I just find out if the
31:52 YouTube live stream starting now never
31:56 went up. Oops. Let's go ahead and change
31:59 that there. So, uh yeah, you know what?
32:02 Those of you who are here already though, you guys are awesome because
32:05 that means you guys either follow me on Twitter, follow me on Twitch, or you uh
32:11 what's the other option? Or you just memorized the schedule and
32:15 you don't follow me on Twitter and you don't follow me on Twitch. Either way,
32:18 you're awesome. So, it's good. I can't believe I did not announce this on my
32:23 YouTube channel. You know what? I don't think I promised that um that topic of
32:27 why gamers care or why they don't care
32:31 um on the YouTube channel. So, we'll just You know what? I'm just gonna here
32:34 here. Watch Watch this. Watch this. Those of you Oops. Sorry. Those of you who are here already, see, I'm just
32:38 going to delete it. I'm going to pretend that never existed and that never
32:42 happened. Just like that. See?
32:47 Gone. Um there we go.
32:50 So, let's go ahead and do a little bit
32:54 more Q&A. Chris asks, "Sandy bridge or
32:58 Ivy Bridge?" To which I would rely I would rely upon you to ask me the
33:04 question in which case um I will give an
33:07 answer and the answer will be I still prefer Ivy Bridge. Okay. Ivy Bridge
33:12 better IPC so more instructions per clock. It's a faster architecture. Sandy
33:16 Bridge can overclock more or it can overclock not at all. So, in terms of
33:21 what you're getting as a guarantee, then Ivy Bridge is better. You could make the
33:26 argument that most Sandy Bridge chips are going to overclock pretty well, but
33:29 I've also seen extreme editions. In fact, John Fatcock from Twitch, John,
33:35 what is his last name? How I think something like that. He has an extreme
33:40 edition that didn't overclock worth anything. So, it's never a guarantee.
33:43 IvoryBridge has faster video transcode, which for me is relevant. I do use it.
33:47 It's awesome for transcoding video to mobile ready formats. Although, again,
33:52 that's another thing I'm really excited about with Windows being like the thing
33:56 to use because we won't have to worry about, you know, converting to some
34:00 stupid format just to play something back on my iPad. Um, so I would
34:05 personally go Ivy Bridge. Does it run a little hotter? Maybe. Does it matter?
34:10 Probably not. Ah, Jenopi, building a new
34:13 PC, Windows 7 or eight for gaming at the same price, just get Windows 8. Uh,
34:16 it'll have a longer support cycle. I always recommend people buy the latest
34:20 OS. You will have to use it at some point. You will encounter it somewhere,
34:25 so it's better to just figure out how to use it. Any reason you don't have an
34:28 Android or Windows phone? Uh, because I'm not really a phone nerd. I I
34:32 honestly I'm not. Um, when I got my phone, I had like an ancient BlackBerry,
34:38 you know, something that had like, you know, a keyboard and it like had a
34:41 scroll wheel. It didn't have a touch screen. There was nothing fancy. And the iPhone 4 was already out, guys. So,
34:45 that's how that's how far into better smartphones we we were um or we were at
34:51 the time. So, the choices for me were Galaxy S and iPhone. That was about it.
34:57 And out of those two, my wife ended up going with the Galaxy S Vibrant and I
35:01 went with the iPhone. Based on our experiences owning these platforms over
35:05 longer periods of time, I would make the argument that I made a way better
35:09 choice. Her her Android device is still
35:12 running Gingerbread, which is Um there is absolutely no reason other
35:18 than you know Android devices not getting the
35:22 support that they really should that that device should not be running on a
35:26 newer OS. Okay. Whereas I get iOS 6 which I haven't upgraded to mind you
35:31 because I'm worried about not having maps. Um yes I do.
35:38 Um I do see the chat but I don't always really I don't really reply to questions
35:42 from Twitch chat mostly from Twitter. um at Linus Techch if you're not already
35:45 following me on Twitter. So, I probably made the right choice. Both of our
35:49 phones still work. Um except that my dock connector is still durable and
35:54 still charges my phone reliably and her stupid micro USB connector is so broken
35:59 that I have to like go in there with a needle and like bend it really hard just
36:02 to get it to charge once in a while. And it lasts for a while. Um her phone has
36:08 crashed numerous times more than mine has. So, when it's time for me to get a
36:12 new phone, basically when my iPhone 4 dies, because I'm not a phone nerd.
36:16 iPhone 4 does absolutely everything I could possibly need a phone to do
36:20 already. It's fast enough for me. Um,
36:24 when it dies, then I'll reevaluate and I'll look at I'll look at what's
36:27 available. Although, I'm not I'm not much of an Android guy. I'm just really
36:33 not. I mean, I use it when I have to, but if I could switch to Windows RT
36:37 tomorrow and Windows Phone tomorrow, that would probably be the way I'd go
36:41 based on my experience so far today. So,
36:44 um, yeah, there you go. Lionus, is it a good idea to wait for Black Friday sales
36:48 to get a totally new system? Yes, Black Friday sales are amazing. Why are TN
36:53 panels so bad? Well, they're just bad.
36:56 They have bad viewing angles and bad color. They're just bad. Don't get them.
37:00 They're fast. So, if you need 3D, you have to get TN. But there you go. Uh,
37:05 Lionus, how would you convince someone on Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8? I
37:08 would tell them if they don't have a compelling need for Windows 8, then uh
37:12 they probably don't need to. But I'm going to talk about storage spaces,
37:15 which if you're a storage nerd, you guys are going to want to check out. Storage
37:20 spaces on Windows 8 is amazing, and I will be talking more about that later.
37:25 Shady Skull says, "First time in the live stream." Shout out to Sweden. Hi,
37:28 Sweden. And that is a very expensive new computer, Shady Skull. Ah, Chromium OS,
37:33 whatever. If your personal rig is on hold, what rig are you using for personal use? Believe it or not, I'm
37:38 using a laptop as my daily driver right now. Isn't that crazy? I'm using my MSI
37:43 uh quadcore gaming laptop, which actually isn't that bad.
37:48 U Mitch says, "I'm not the only Canadian in the world who doesn't drink." Thank
37:51 you, Mitch. Is Nexus 7 a good choice? Yes. Um, I'm I I don't know how sold I
37:58 am on this whole iPad mini thing. Uh, it's like Christmas for Muslims, but you
38:04 still spared one and a half hours for the live stream. Thank you. I appreciate
38:07 that. You are awesome. Uh, Logitech G710
38:11 Plus unboxing is coming soon, but tonight and today I had to do my Vivo
38:15 Tab RT and I have to do the uh the
38:19 Surface and so Yeah. There's Yeah. Yeah.
38:24 Yeah. What keyboard am I using right now? I am
38:27 using a Filco Cherry MX Blue uh 10
38:30 keyless keyboard right now. Cherry MX Blues are the best. They're amazing. I
38:34 love them. Uh Linus, quit answering questions about
38:37 your wife or she's going to ground you. You are 100% right. That is exactly what
38:41 would happen. Any updates on the Prodigy Hackintosh build? I finally have a
38:44 motherboard. However, I've had no time. Things have been so crazy. FX8350 is
38:50 about 15% faster than an 8150. 10 15%
38:53 faster. Total War gamers. I love Total War. Although the only one I ever played
38:57 was uh Rome Total War. Um CW asks, "How
39:01 was the learning curve on Windows 8?" I haven't spent as much time with Windows
39:04 8 as I'd like. Um although when I finally finish my personal rig, I will
39:07 be installing Windows 8 on it as the first thing that I do. Um, but if you
39:11 tweet um at Slickp
39:16 knows better than me, if you tweet him, he's been using Windows 8 pretty much
39:20 since the developer preview came out and he really likes it. He's using it on on
39:25 a laptop without um without a touchcreen. Lionus, do you even lift?
39:30 No, I do. I do not lift. Um I I play
39:33 badminton. So those of you who think badminton is a wussy sport, to you I
39:38 would go like this. Badminton. That's it. Nothing else.
39:44 Badminton. Um, hi. I'm from France. I've gone
39:48 swimming a few times in the last little bit, but this is from badinton. And I
39:52 haven't even played in a couple months. These were way better. Way better.
39:57 Um, Paul asked, "Can I beat ASUS's JJ in
40:02 a straight up fist fight?" You know what? He's got enough of, and I don't
40:05 don't take this the wrong way. He's got enough of a weight advantage that I
40:08 think I'd be in trouble. Um,
40:12 so I I think I'm going to I think I'm
40:15 going to And someone suggested that it was from a lack of eating. You know
40:19 what? I'm going to show you my dinner.
40:22 This is homemade sweet and sour sauce on
40:25 like with like chicken balls and rice and it's like full of carbs and full of
40:30 like meat and uh and like breaded
40:33 chicken and it's delicious and awesome and I know I'm a food guy. Trust me,
40:38 food guy. All right. Uh you talked about
40:41 the FT3 Mini, but what is my opinion of the FTO3? It's it's it's great. It's the
40:46 MATX version. I'd get the mini personally because I don't need the expansion for a computer like that. But
40:51 awesome. Hey, hey, Dan's joining us. Hi,
40:54 Dan. Uh, went to a nude beach around the
40:58 UBC area. It was a nightmare. Uh, yeah,
41:01 that was must have been Wreck Beach. So, I'm sorry to hear that you went to Wreck
41:05 Beach. But uh see that's the thing about nude beaches is just it's like
41:11 nude beaches are all about people who might go okay they're either about
41:16 people who don't care and I guess you know if you got if you know you're kind
41:20 of a hippie and you don't care then then that's cool but if you're a hippie and
41:24 you don't care about sort of showing off your goods then um my suggestion would
41:29 be that never at any point in your life would you have been through a time when
41:34 people sort augling your goods or staring at you would have made you
41:38 uncomfortable like because if you'd grown up with that kind of an experience
41:42 so let's say hot people this is just
41:45 sort of my imagination of how this might work. Um, so if you're as long as you're
41:49 not one of that people, one of those people, that's probably how you end up with that kind of a mentality. And so
41:54 you end up at a nude beach. And then the other people who might go to nude beaches would be people who want to see
41:58 other hot people. And those people like
42:01 sort of, you know, your your bushes creepers might not necessarily be the
42:05 hottest people either. So for the most part, especially here in Vancouver,
42:10 although it might be different in other cultures, I know Europeans have very
42:14 different cultures with respect to things like nudity. Um,
42:19 here in North America, it's not as much the norm. And it's one of those things
42:24 where it's like more like the weird people go there. Um, and I'm not I'm not
42:27 saying that they're all weird. These are generalizations. And generalizations,
42:31 while they may be generally true, are never 100% true. So, don't take this the
42:36 wrong way. Any of you who are into nude beaches and you're super hot. Although,
42:40 I mean, um, you know, tweet me a pic as
42:43 long as you're not a dude. Although, who am I kidding? 90. Uh, for the live
42:47 streams, the numbers are even more hilarious than on most of my videos.
42:51 Most of my videos, it's around 97% male. The people who actually tune in and
42:55 watch the live streams are 98 point something high percent male. Almost 99%
43:00 male. So, actually, do not send me any pictures. Thank you.
43:06 Um, I have no idea why Twitch doesn't work
43:09 on Google. Um, I have Twitch open in Google. It is here.
43:15 See, this is my Google, this is my Twitch, and that's my stream. So, yeah.
43:21 Uh, Pepk. Who here doesn't know what Pepk means? If you don't know what Pepk
43:26 means, it's kind of an English play on words. It means problem exists between
43:30 chair and keyboard, which is the way of saying user error that a lot of users
43:34 won't understand you. All right, so I
43:38 want to do another topic here. We've got over a thousand viewers now that I
43:42 remembered to uh to send out the YouTube notification. So, let's talk. What do
43:47 you guys want to see? You know what? I'll let uh I'll let the Twitch chat
43:51 vote because I never really let them do anything.
43:54 You guys want to see Windows 8 touch and my take on that on the various
43:58 platforms? Do you want to hear about drive spaces for Windows 8? or do you
44:03 want to hear my thoughts on Surface versus iPad versus Android for me
44:06 personally with an emphasis on Windows RT and Surface? So, Twitch chat, what do
44:12 you guys got for me? Here we go. Let's see what they say. They all want to hear
44:16 about Drivespaces. Okay, drives spaces is so exciting. So, I want to start with
44:22 how much I loved Windows Home Server.
44:25 Windows Home Server was the best project
44:28 that Microsoft ever completely abandoned or at least it looked like they
44:32 abandoned. So, Windows Home Server had two revisions. The first revision had
44:36 the most amazing feature ever called the drive pool. The drive poolool was
44:40 awesome because it allowed me a totally
44:43 cheap bastard to take well in some ways.
44:46 Okay, so cheap bastard to take a 24 bay
44:50 4U case. So, I could fit as many like 24
44:54 uh three and a half inch drives in, as many as I wanted. Total mish mash of
44:59 capacities, total mishmash of brands.
45:02 Some of them were reertified, some of them were new. It was just like it would
45:07 be a nightmare to any kind of a storage engineer. They'd just be like,
45:12 "What are you doing?" Um, but it allowed me to run that for years without losing
45:18 any data in spite of the fact that I lost somewhere between six and a dozen
45:23 drives in that time because drive poolool or store drive extender or
45:28 whatever the heck they called it. Yeah, storage pool. Storage drive pool, whatever. drive pool um allowed you to
45:34 create like a pseudo fake RAID one where if you inserted for example two 320 gig
45:39 drives and one 640 gig drive the software would be constantly pinging
45:44 those drives going what do you have what do you have what do you have what do you have and then if you set up duplication
45:50 every 10 minutes 15 minutes hour or so it would just kind of check anything
45:54 changed anything changed and it would check all those drives and say okay do
45:58 any of these drives have something on them that is not replicated somewhere
46:01 else and then it would do
46:06 it would do the equivalent of if you manually copied the folder or the file
46:10 from one drive to another. So it was a filebased replication. So you're not
46:15 relying on a RAID card. You're not relying on a chipset. It's just SATA
46:21 SATA. And then you can take the drive out, you can put it in another computer,
46:24 you can read all that data off it, you can restore things. It was brilliant in
46:28 its simplicity. Um, so it would make
46:31 sure that there all the data on your system was present on at least two drives at any given time. So it didn't
46:36 have the advantages of RAID five or RAID six where you can glean a lot more
46:39 storage out of your drives, but it had the advantage where you don't have to buy a bunch of matching drives all at
46:43 the same time, which come on, who has money for that and like expensive RAID
46:47 cards to run RAID 6. Um, so, so that was
46:50 why that appealed to me and, uh, I used it for a long time, really liked it. But
46:55 the problem was that advanced format drives, 4K sector drives are not
47:00 compatible with the way that drive poolool was written, the way it was
47:04 designed. So, they were going to try to implement something and there's third
47:07 party implementations for Windows Home Server 2011. I don't trust a third party
47:11 implementation. I inherently like, you know, am I a Microsoft fanboy? Maybe
47:17 not. But I tend to, you know, hold them a little bit closer to my heart than
47:20 some random software deb that I'm going to trust with all of my like 15
47:25 terabytes of archived video and all my photos and like no, I just don't trust
47:29 it. Um, so the only other option was to go
47:33 proper raid because they were going to implement it and they cut out drive
47:37 poolool and I was like that's the craziest thing I ever heard. I had no
47:41 idea storage spaces was coming. So, storage spaces is going to allow users
47:46 running Windows 8, whether it is on a
47:51 server type of system that you run separately from everything else. Okay?
47:55 So, you can just create like a little Windows 8 storage server and stick it in a closet or whether it's on your PC
48:00 itself. It will allow you to take again
48:03 mix and match drives and run fake RAID
48:06 one or even fake RAID five which is very
48:11 very cool because computers are so fast now like I mean come on who's been doing
48:16 this a while who remembers back when you used to read a motherboard review and
48:21 they would round up five different motherboards and tell you which one had
48:26 the lowest CPU utilization while you were transferring files at 10100 100
48:30 speeds or even gigabit speeds over a network. Now, we don't even care. When
48:36 was the last time you saw anyone talk about that? It's totally irrelevant
48:39 because you could take one hyperthreaded
48:43 of one of your cores, set that aside, and that could handle, excuse me, any By
48:50 the way, this is a G9, not a RAT 7, for those of you who seem to think I have a
48:54 RAT 7. Um,
48:57 where was I going with that? something something something. Oh crap, now I've
49:03 totally lost track. Blah blah blah blah blah. Right. You could set aside a small
49:07 fraction of your processing power and
49:11 you can do all the gigabit you want and you can do all the sound processing you
49:14 want. These are things people used to care about. You can do all the RAID you
49:18 want even. I mean, you'd have to have a pretty big pretty badass array by the
49:22 time you actually run into some kind of a computational limitation. So now your
49:27 OS can just handle it. And the great thing about it is again you have that
49:32 ability to um to to mix and match
49:35 capacities and manufacturers and just not even care about it at all. And I
49:41 personally think that that is amazing. I think it's one of the best things about
49:45 Windows 8 and uh because it will enable
49:50 real people and this is the problem. This is the problem with storage over
49:54 the years. real people can't afford it. We can afford hard drives. Sure, we can
49:59 afford like, you know, your cheapo green drives or your cheapo consumer drives,
50:02 but by the time you start getting into enterprisegrade drives, which are the
50:06 ones that actually won't fail, um you when used in a storage application, by
50:10 the time you get into those, they're really expensive. And then you tell an
50:13 average user, "No, no, you have to buy twice as many of them."
50:18 They're like, "What? What? I have to I have to buy twice as many of them before
50:22 it's even remotely safe." I mean, that's crazy talk. Whereas now, Microsoft with
50:28 the storage spaces is building in RAID 5, which means you don't have to have
50:32 twice as much. You can have one parody bit for the entire thing. Okay? Not to
50:37 mention, you can also mix and match everything. And as you need more space,
50:42 you can continue to add drives. Whereas you have to have a pretty high-end RAID
50:46 controller like an LSI, Adapt um
50:51 yeah, like an LSI or an Adapt RAID controller in order to have that kind of
50:55 functionality and that's really expensive. So you tell people first you
50:59 tell people, oh, you have to have twice as many drives. And if you don't want to have twice as many drives, you have to
51:02 spend a few hundred bucks on a RAID card. And that's a very entry-level RAID card. Realistically, you want to run any
51:07 decent number of drives, you're spending 800 bucks or more on a RAID card. Um,
51:12 you know, okay, they start at maybe sort of 450 for high-end RAID cards that have
51:17 fast processors. Well, now you don't care because you're using your CPU to
51:21 deal with it. So, that's where I'm at on storage spaces. If anyone has any
51:25 additional questions on storage spaces, I will let the Twitch chat see if they
51:29 want to contribute anything about storage spaces. You bought a 926016i for
51:35 only 400 bucks. Wow, that's a good deal.
51:38 Someone says they got a very high-end RAID card for only 400 bucks.
51:44 Um, I like storage. Windows 8 is pointless without more touchscreen
51:48 monitors. I'm not that sold on the whole touchscreen monitor thing with Windows 8
51:52 to be perfectly honest. How do you enable storage spaces? Actually, not
51:56 having done it yet, I uh I don't want to
51:59 I don't want to sort of speculate. Um,
52:03 do you something something I will have an episode coming about storage spaces
52:06 soon. So, yes, I'm very excited.
52:12 Yeah, you guys don't really seem to have much to contribute here. Sorry, guys. No, my house is not paid off. I'm like
52:17 26, you guys. Do I look like I have my house paid off? Um, all right. So, I
52:23 want to move right into my next topic here, which is going to be Windows 8 and
52:29 touch. So, we'll finish up with the surface. Windows 8 and touch.
52:35 For this part, it would actually be useful if I could move the camera around, but I'll have to just kind of
52:38 mime it out for you guys as best I can. Or maybe I can move this monitor so you
52:43 can Yeah, this will help you guys. Wh Oh, that was close. This will help you
52:47 guys visualize. Windows 8 is probably one of the
52:52 broadest operating systems we've seen in a long time because there will be a
52:56 server adaptation, there's a desktop adaptation, it is meant for use for
53:01 professional use, there's a professional skew. Um, there's a tablet adaptation,
53:06 and the OS itself, the home OS, just
53:10 flat out runs on tablets. So, and not to
53:13 mention there will be a phone adaptation which will use many of the same
53:16 elements. So, with all of that sort of
53:19 in mind, Windows 8 is also extremely touch optimized. So, yeah, it's fast,
53:25 it's lightweight, that allows it to run all these devices, but I am super sold
53:30 on touch from a phone perspective. I think that right now it would be
53:34 impossible for me to go back to like a tactile interface phone that actually
53:38 uses like arrow keys and a menu. Impossible. Impossible. Um, for as a
53:44 tablet experience, touch is Oh, I got my
53:48 screen filter app on here. So, I'm just gonna turn that. Oh, no. I didn't.
53:52 Apparently, I just have the screen brightness turned way down on this thing. I usually use it at night. So,
53:57 um, touchscreen on a tablet. I think we can all agree that anything other than
54:00 touchscreen on a tablet would be redonkulous at this point. Touchscreen
54:04 on a notebook I am very excited about.
54:08 I'm going to be using the Surface or uh the Surface here for Microsoft to
54:12 simulate what touchscreen on a notebook might look like if you were using it at
54:16 a desk or at your lap. Touch is awesome because you can be Oh, just a sec, guys.
54:22 Sorry. Uh
54:31 okay. And my baby was using this last time, so it's kind of borked up right
54:34 now. But uh so touch on on a device like this is outstanding because you can go
54:39 uh task switcher apparently I'm going to try and use that. It's not going to work
54:43 for me right now of course. So you can be typing on a document and then a
54:48 second later you can be like oh okay I want to read more about that. So I'll go
54:52 back to Windows and I want to go to I don't know whatever internet explorer.
54:56 And then for me at this point it is very natural
55:01 to browse websites like this to Oh,
55:04 what's that? Oh, that's kind of cool. That switches to the mobile version of the website. Neat. Okay. It's very
55:10 natural for me to swipe like this when I'm reading. I find it easier to manage
55:14 than page up, page down, arrow keys, or like scrolling over here and finding the
55:20 little bar and moving it down. Like I'm just I'm not sold on those ways of
55:24 interacting anymore. So
55:27 yes, for reading, casual reading, for for video, it's again very natural for
55:32 me to sit and watch video like this and then just kind of, you know, touch it or
55:36 scroll around like this rather than reaching over for the mouse. I'm much more comfortable. So yes, I'm super sold
55:42 on touch for notebook. And the reason for this comes down to distance. I am
55:47 close enough to a notebook that I can type on it comfortably like this. See,
55:51 shoulders relaxed, back straight. How do you type on a notebook? Then I can reach
55:55 my screen by moving this much. If you're any further away than that, it's not
55:59 going to happen. This is the same kind of thing that causes problems for people
56:03 who have, say, for example, two-handed passwords where you have to take your
56:06 hand off your mouse, physically move it over this much, type your password, and
56:11 go back to your mouse. It's obnoxious. If I'm using the internet like this, and
56:15 I kind of go, "Oh, I want to enter a URL." Doom, there's my keyboard. I go
56:19 there, and then boom, I'm going to scroll around. I'm not actually
56:23 connected to Wi-Fi right now, guys. Sorry. So, this isn't going to work. But, um, but that's very natural because
56:28 it's so close. You're not moving very far. You're moving like three inches
56:31 away or for my uh, you know, for all my fellow Canadians, you're moving like 8
56:35 cm away, 9 cm away, and it's very
56:39 natural. On the desktop, touch poses
56:42 some problems for me. And I've done videos about it. I've spent time with
56:46 Windows 8 on the desktop. And I have a
56:50 big problem for one reason. This is how I use a desktop. This is a 27in monitor
56:56 right here, guys. Okay, it's big. I don't sit this close to it. I don't have
56:59 my keyboard here to the point where this is how I'm using my computer with my
57:04 keyboard right against it so that it would be quick to touch. I use my
57:08 desktop computer more from a distance of
57:11 let's say about
57:14 Oh, I just Oh my goodness. I just closed the iPad in there. Oops, there it is.
57:20 It's all good. I would have never found that. Okay, here's how I use my desktop.
57:25 I want to be at a comfortable distance, which for a 27 inch 1080p monitor is
57:29 about here. So, I got my I got my mouse in my hand here. I got my keyboard in
57:33 front of me here. This is how I type. This is comfortable. This is where I'd
57:37 need my touchcreen to be. This is where my touch screen is.
57:42 How? Like, try this. Okay, guys. Try this. Remember, touchscreen is for
57:46 casual use, casual interaction. You go like this, you scroll around, you zoom.
57:51 Touchscreen is meant to be very relaxed. If your shoulders aren't relaxed, if
57:55 you're not comfortable, it's not going to work. Okay?
57:59 Do this. Do this. Everyone watching, hold your ARM out like this, fully
58:03 extended with your shoulder forward. Like, reach out to your computer. If
58:06 you're on a computer right now, reach out to your screen. Now, hold your ARM there for the next sort of um I don't
58:12 know, two minutes of the live stream. just hold your ARM there and kind of go
58:16 like this a little bit. I guarantee you get tired. So touchscreen to me is
58:23 almost like um it's almost like
58:27 a go one way or go completely the other way
58:31 experience on the desktop. So, you either have a computer sitting in your
58:35 kitchen that doesn't even have a mouse and a keyboard at it and is just a touch
58:40 computer where you're running um modern UI or Metro UI
58:45 uh and that's it and that's the way you're using it and maybe you have like
58:49 a keyboard in a drawer somewhere nearby that's wireless
58:54 or you use Windows 8 with a mouse and a keyboard like a normal human being and
58:59 that's where we're at. So yeah,
59:03 touchscreen not sold on the desktop, very sold on mobile and very sold on
59:09 notebook. I think notebook is almost going to be or or you know something
59:13 like Surface where it's bridging that gap between tablet and notebook is going
59:17 to be the magic device where all of a sudden mouse, keyboard, touch, all of
59:22 these things make awesome sense and you can do whatever is most convenient. I
59:26 mean, I'd be lying if I said I haven't been sitting at a notebook before with a
59:30 glossy screen and think, "Oh, yeah, I'll just uh I'll scroll this." And I kind of
59:35 go, "Oh, right. It's not touchscreen." I've never done that with a desktop
59:39 because when you're at a desktop, you have a proper keyboard. Half the problem
59:43 is when you're at a notebook, you're hunting for a stupid function key and
59:46 then you're trying to remember which function key is like page up and page
59:50 down. Is it the arrows up?
59:55 Is it something up in the top right? You don't know where it is. So that's why
59:59 instead of uh thinking about it, I might reach and try to go like this. At a
60:03 desktop, I know where my page up and my page down is. Unless I bought like a
60:07 like a ridiculous keyboard that doesn't have them here, then that's where they
60:11 are. That's where they are. It's end of the story. That's where they are. And
60:14 you've also got arrow keys. And you've also got a mouse wheel. Mouse wheel
60:18 makes all the difference in the world. You don't have a mouse wheel. This is
60:22 almost like this is almost the replacement for mouse wheel for me in
60:26 terms of what I would actually use touch for on. And yes, this is a Playboy mouse
60:32 pad. You guys get over it. Twitch chat's going crazy about the Playboy mouse pad.
60:37 Um, but that's what I would actually use touch for on a on a on a notebook style
60:42 device. So, there you go. That is my
60:45 take on that. Um, let's do a little bit
60:49 more in terms of Twitter Twitter questions here before we move on to my
60:53 last topic. And I want to talk about Surface a lot prior to the unboxing that
60:59 I will be adding later uh later tonight.
61:02 So, 196 new interactions. I hate touchscreen because there's always
61:06 fingerprints. Yeah, I don't know. I'm used to it. I used to It used to drive
61:09 me crazy, but um hi Linus in stream. You
61:12 say get a Soundcore because it's better. Yes, you will notice a difference.
61:17 Can we get Windows 8 for 15? If you have a system with Windows 7, you can get a
61:22 Windows 8 upgrade for only 15 bucks. Yes. And you just buy it online. Um, is
61:26 that a shiny monitor? Yes, the one I have here is shiny. My ARM is in pain
61:30 and when I touch my monitor sitting next to me, it's like lifting. Okay, good.
61:35 Uh, touchpad or a trackpad would be a good idea for Windows 8. Absolutely. And
61:39 and then this is another part of like it's See, okay, one more thing about
61:44 touch. One more thing about touch is people treat touch and keyboard mouse as
61:49 if they're these diametrically opposed things, but they're not. It's turning
61:53 into this interface spectrum where you've got your traditional keyboard and
61:57 mouse and then you've got things like touchpads and tablets, not not like not
62:03 these tablets, but you've got like um Wacom tablets, so like art input
62:08 devices. And then on the other side, you've got like this these pure
62:11 touchscreen interfaces where everything is done with a virtual keyboard and
62:14 everything is navigated through touching. But there's no reason why we
62:18 can't do all of these things.
62:21 Okay. Uh I want to build a desktop server with
62:25 at least six SATA 3 hard drives and RAID. Yeah, buy a RAID card. Uh if
62:29 you're running six drives and they're all matching, get a real RAID card. Um I
62:33 saw Logan rant about Windows 8 a while ago. I still don't think it's optimized for mice and more importantly
62:37 multitasking. How do you optimize an OS for multitasking? I mean, they're pretty
62:42 multitasking friendly these days. I would argue that Windows uh Windows
62:46 Vista and Windows 7 aren't really very well optimized for multitasking to be
62:50 perfectly honest. I mean, come on. Are you guys serious? This Oh, wait. No,
62:54 it's it's not screen sharing. Do I not Oh, I don't have Sorry, guys. I don't
62:58 have glass enabled right now, but that stupid that stupid flip thing that they
63:02 introduced with Vista. I mean, come on. That's not multitasking. When you
63:05 compare that to something like Expose on OS 10, it's ridiculous. Um, I'm only 16,
63:10 so it's pretty weird for me to wi witness a major change in the PC
63:14 experience. The mouse and keyboard is sort of old. Oh, this is a topic I
63:17 wanted to talk about. The change in the PC interface and usage experience.
63:24 People think that Okay, here. This is
63:27 going to turn into like a Kids Today rant because
63:31 let me just make sure I got the right thing going on here. Kids today think that the start menu is
63:37 the be all and end all. Okay, the start
63:41 menu sucks. The start menu is slow. Why
63:44 do you think Microsoft added the jump
63:48 bar or jump lists down here so that you can put a ton of stuff down here that
63:52 you'll have easy access to? Because the start menu is stupid. This is why the
63:56 start menu is stupid. And this is coming from someone who went through the
64:00 Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 change. Start.
64:05 Okay. So, this has out of all of the things I might want to do with my
64:08 computer, this has like eight of them. Thanks for that. Um, all programs I have
64:14 to scroll. Are you serious? Older
64:18 implementations were better than this where they had just a bigger one if
64:22 there was more stuff. Are Are you kidding me? I have to scroll if I want
64:26 to find Winar. Yeah, I can search for stuff, but you know what? I could search
64:31 for stuff 10 years ago, too. So, it's not like that's the be all and end all.
64:34 It's just controlr or not controlrlf or
64:39 whatever it is. See, it doesn't even work anymore. But, okay. So, I have to
64:43 scroll then. I mean, heaven forbid that
64:46 I actually go to something like accessories and then I want to reach
64:50 system tools and then I want to find something in there and then that's not
64:54 the right thing and I want to go back and it's like how does this even work?
64:57 This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I don't like the start menu.
65:01 I thought the start menu was stupid. Windows 3.1 had it right. All you had
65:06 was you had your Okay, so picture like this whole thing that you're seeing now
65:10 is your Windows desktop. So you had your applications box here and then under it
65:15 you had your games and you could scroll the wheel on either side there and then
65:18 next to it you had your screen savers because back then screen savers were the
65:22 end thing and then you up here you have like your um I don't know you couldn't
65:26 do a whole lot with computers in those days but the point is you had everything
65:29 segmented almost like
65:39 almost like
65:43 this where everything was sorted by the
65:47 utility of it and you could rearrange things as you see fit and then you could
65:50 whoopsy daisies and then you could move things around however you wanted and
65:54 arrange them and have some of them be bigger than others. You could take you
65:58 could actually take all of those uh all of those segmented Windows and you could
66:01 resize them. You could make your game ones games one you know this big and
66:05 then you could have your like you know your mom's music still well okay music
66:09 wasn't multimedia wasn't really around yet but you whatever your screen savers
66:13 could be this big you know sort of in a small corner here and you could rearrange it however you wanted so met
66:19 modern UI to me almost feels like an
66:22 extension of that where now instead of being limited to this static space that
66:27 I have on my desktop which back then resolutions were very low now I can
66:32 easily and smoothly scroll between all the different stuff that I have and how
66:36 I have it compartmentalized. I can scroll right out and I can zoom in on
66:40 the part that's important to me. This to me is a faster way to access
66:45 things than start menu. Especially the
66:48 pre Windows Vista Windows 7, I don't remember when they changed it, but the
66:52 one when you used to have to mouse over and then wait for the next thing to pop
66:56 out. I I mean to me start menu was such a step backwards. And you guys can agree
67:01 or disagree. And that's sort of what half the fun of this is, is not
67:05 everyone's going to agree with me. But
67:10 how many things do you guys actually use on your computer anymore? I would argue
67:15 too many for Sorry, I'm going to put that away. I would argue too many for
67:19 this to be it. And I would argue maybe
67:23 too many for the bottom ones here to be
67:26 enough, but not so much that you have to have a
67:30 start menu. I mean, try and try try and figure it out, guys. When you more
67:35 clicks is bad. This is UI 101. The more
67:38 clicks you have, the way worse the way worse it is. So,
67:44 modern UI, and I'm going to bring back up my XSplit here so I can see what I'm
67:48 talking about. Modern UI will allow you to have far more available at your
67:54 fingertips than either jump lists or
67:57 start menu in its current implementation. And I am I am so not I'm
68:03 so not excited to go back to start menu because I personally have probably about
68:08 25 to 30 things. Most of my games are in Steam now. I mean, it's not like I open
68:13 individual games anymore. Um, so I only
68:16 have like low double digits things I actually do on my computer. So how much
68:20 space would I actually need on a modern UI thing here in order to have
68:24 everything I need to do right at the tip of my fingers? Well, I'd need one block
68:28 like this, another block like this, and another block like this. So what's
68:31 faster? Clicking the start menu and then Whoops. Sorry. You know what? The great
68:36 thing about Windows is you can actually still use it this way if you want. So
68:40 what's faster? clicking a start menu and then clicking here and then clicking
68:43 here or going like this and then tapping
68:46 something whether it's with a mouse or whether it's with your hands.
68:51 So that is my take on it. And for those
68:54 of you who are saying the search is the only thing I use in the start menu, you
68:58 are exactly you are exactly the reason
69:01 why the start menu is going away because you can still search. It doesn't matter
69:06 where you are in the modern UI. You can go like this. Um,
69:13 control panel. So, the way the search works is
69:17 outstanding. Forget start menu.
69:22 Um, as for being compact and organized for start menu, that's a comment on
69:26 Twitch. Um, yeah, but you can also make Metro organized. You can also organize
69:31 things uh with your with your I forget.
69:34 Do they call them whatever? Pinning things to the taskbar. You can have a
69:38 lot of frequently used apps there. You can still add desktop shortcuts. So,
69:42 there's still a lot of ways that things can be used the same way you're used to.
69:47 I think start menu um Samsung implemented a start menu on their
69:50 Windows 8 PCs and I think it just feels clunky and out of place in the Windows 8
69:55 environment. I'm I'm not sold on Start Menu.
69:59 Okay, so
70:02 let's keep going. Looks like a lot of
70:05 people disagree with me, but I mean, you know what? Five years, 10 years from
70:09 now, you'll be using a you'll be using a touch friendly interface, whether you
70:13 guys like it or not. Do you know how many people said they'd never use the
70:16 start menu in Windows 95 because it was so crap?
70:20 Guess how many people use a start menu now? Bam. So, there you go. Uh, let's
70:25 take a couple more Twitter questions and then I'm going to talk about Surface
70:28 because I'm super excited about Surface.
70:32 Ah, and I have to hit the scroll bar. Are you kidding me? Exactly. Exactly.
70:38 My friend wants to buy two GTX 670s and he's barely even a casual gamer. Could
70:42 you briefly explain to him that it's stupid? I'd love to explain to him that it's stupid, but I have a GTX 590 and
70:47 I'm Yeah, a casual gamer. Um, Logan says
70:51 we should wait until at least Service Pack 1 because it has way too many issues. What do you think? I think
70:55 waiting for Service Pack 1 on any Windows OS has never been a bad idea.
70:59 Windows XP sucked at launch. Windows Vista. Nobody liked at launch. I liked
71:02 it, but uh Windows 7 actually was great at launch. Um
71:07 but it's rarely rarely a bad idea. Lionus, do you like Linux? Never used
71:11 it. Um when I'm not using touch Well, okay, I've used it, but I've never used
71:15 it like for my own personal computer. Uh when I'm not using touchscreen, I have
71:19 to scroll to the side with my mouse. It's a pain. I don't like Windows 8 for
71:22 non-touchcreen desktop computer. Once you memorize the shortcut keys in Windows 8, it will be the best
71:26 experience ever. That's another thing is people need to we're talking about a new
71:30 generation of computer users here. We're not talking about old people who
71:33 actually this is this is a great this is a great anecdote. Uh a friend of mine at
71:36 work um was like a like a nerd back when
71:40 being a nerd was like pretty pretty rare. Uh back when the mouse was
71:44 invented he was like an Uber geek and figuring out like how to build networks
71:48 at uh at the local university. So, buddy
71:52 of mine was talking about how he put together, get this, he put together at
71:55 UBC, a class where they taught the the
71:59 professors, and this was like a $149 course or something, and it was packed.
72:04 He put together a curriculum to teach people how to use a mouse. And he was
72:08 like, "You wouldn't believe the stuff I saw. People were taking the mouse and
72:13 they'd get to the edge edge of the mouse pad and they'd go like this down the
72:17 table or they'd bring it they'd bring it off to the edge and they'd go like this
72:20 over it or they'd like they'd go over the edge and they wouldn't know what to
72:23 do or they'd be holding it like this.
72:28 That's yesterday. That's not that long ago. Whereas now we take a mouse for
72:32 granted. We take control ctrl +v for granted. If you don't know how to copy
72:37 paste without like some, you know, it
72:40 used to be people copy and paste it by going up to edit and going down to copy.
72:45 That's slow. That's stupid. The modern computer user has no patience and
72:49 they've grown up with this stuff. They are going to figure out the shortcuts
72:53 that Microsoft has built in. They're going to take advantage of this OS and
72:56 it's going to be a significantly better experience. Just for you guys wait, you
73:00 guys wait and see. I will be right. Uh, Twitter, I really like the start menu
73:05 and the something something. Tips on making energy efficient rig. Um, buy
73:09 energy efficient parts. Underclock them.
73:13 Um, nope. I don't think the mouse and keyboard is going anywhere. Nowhere at
73:18 all. Especially on the desktop. And anyone who thinks the desktop is dead is
73:22 a because the desktop is not dead. The desktop will always, well, not
73:27 always, but will for the foreseeable future, potentially my lifetime, be a
73:32 better platform than anything else for any kind of real computer use, whether
73:36 it's spreadsheets or whether it's video editing or whether it's you you will
73:41 always need the computing power of a desktop. And you'll always need the form
73:45 factor of a desktop. No one's going to use a computer for eight hours a day
73:49 like this. No one's going to do that because that's stupid. This is stupid. I
73:54 mean, someone will do it because they have to because they're a road warrior or whatever else, but in an office
73:58 environment, you're going to have desktops. And anyone who says, "Oh,
74:02 well, look, sales of desktops are declining, so the desktop is dead."
74:07 You're wrong. The reason sales of desktops are declining are very simple.
74:12 It's because the desktop you built 5 years ago is still fast enough for the
74:15 internet. Five years before that, it wasn't the case. You couldn't play back
74:19 HD video on that computer. You couldn't run the internet on that computer. or
74:22 well you could but it would suck. It would be terrible experience. So the
74:26 reason is that people's upgrade cycles are getting longer just like with a
74:29 fridge or a dishwasher or any other appliance like that. That is why the
74:33 desktop sales are slowing down. Not because the desktop is dead as a platform.
74:38 All right, back to Twitter for a little bit. I'm not going to have much time for
74:41 Surface. You guys have like got me going here tonight
74:45 ranting about stuff because you guys are killing me here. Should my next hard
74:49 drive be SSD or hard drive? Money isn't a problem. However, more space is
74:53 better. I don't know what you mean by hard drive array. Um, you should have an
74:57 SSD for boot and then you should store everything else on hard drives. My
75:02 recommendations for FPS games, get a G9X. Um, if you have a claw grip, I
75:06 really like G9 series. Um, how many Why
75:09 are people keep asking me if I lift tonight? I already said I don't lift and then I um Yeah, I said like eight times
75:15 I don't lift. Mind you, that might have been before I invited the YouTube people. Nice couch you got there. I got
75:20 it from a local furniture store. You know, nothing fancy. Lionus, do you know
75:25 what A+ certified is? Nick, you win the
75:28 award. You win this piece of carpet lint
75:34 for asking what must be the most phenomenally obvious question that I've
75:38 ever had on one of my live streams. Of course, I know what A+ is. Uh I am not
75:42 A+ certified, however. I never did take the course.
75:47 Um, I'm thinking about getting just one touch monitor for touch in the modern
75:50 UI, having a second one as a main one. What do you think, Jordan? I'm not sold.
75:54 I I don't think that the way that they've implemented Windows 8 now is
75:58 going to be conducive to having like one monitor for using with your keyboard and
76:02 mouse and one for touch. Um, although it's something I'd love to see them
76:05 think about more with the next iteration of the OS.
76:10 Um, okay. You know what? Let's uh let's
76:15 let's cut it for now. I'm going to get through Surface as fast as I can and
76:19 then I want to do a little bit more Q&A. So, Surface, why do I like this? Why do
76:25 I think that this is amazing? Because it is amazing. Uh where's my iPad? Here we
76:31 go. All right. Number one, thickness.
76:34 Once you put here, I'm going to I'm just going to operate the camera myself here.
76:39 Once you put a cover on an iPad 2, and
76:42 let's face it, you're putting a cover on your iPad. Um, because if you're not,
76:47 then you clearly don't take very good care of your very expensive electronics.
76:51 Once you put a cover on it, this is the difference in thickness. My iPad 2 is
76:57 actually slightly thicker than my Surface. So, I could even get a nice
77:00 slim cover on the back and they'd be very, very similar. So, there's that.
77:04 Okay. here.
77:07 When I am watching a video on my iPad,
77:12 okay, so I'm watching some video. I don't know what video this is. My wife
77:15 was using it. I'm watching some video and I go, "Oh, my brightness isn't very
77:19 good." How do I change that? I go like this. I shut down my video. I go to
77:25 settings. Then I go to brightness and
77:28 wallpaper. Remember guys, clicks are bad. Did I say it was too low or too
77:32 high? It doesn't matter. The point is I'm adjusting it. Then I'm going out
77:36 here. I'm going back to my video. How many clicks was that? That's ridiculous.
77:40 Microsoft has thought about this. They've gone, "What do people want out
77:45 of a mobile experience? What can we bring to the table?" If I was watching a
77:49 video on the Surface,
77:54 I hope the battery didn't die. I haven't actually charged it yet. I just got it
77:57 today. Uh oh. I didn't even I didn't
78:01 even check the battery charge level. This is going to be a problem.
78:07 Uh oh. Lionus is in trouble on his live
78:10 stream now. Hold on. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong.
78:16 I hope I'm doing it wrong.
78:21 How am I going to do my surface segment if my surface is not charged?
78:31 Oh, my surface isn't charged. Well, oh, wait. Hold on. It's turning on now. I
78:35 wonder where's the uh where's the charger for it so I could plug it in. So, it's not going to run out of
78:38 battery. Yeah, it turned on for a sec there and then it uh and then it petered
78:43 out on me. So, it looks like the Okay, fine. I'll simulate this for you. So,
78:46 here's how you Okay, so I'm going to lose the Surface thing. If you guys want
78:50 to hear my thoughts on Surface, then I guess what you'll have to do is watch my unboxing, which will come up later. Um,
78:55 so what you do on the surface is you'd have your video going, you swipe in from
78:58 the side, you touch the volume or the brightness rocker, either one, and you
79:02 just go like this or just go like this. It is so fast and so easy and so
79:07 intuitive that I am just absolutely blown away by how awesome it is. And
79:11 apparently the battery is okay. I'm just going to turn the camera for a second while I enter my password. Sorry guys.
79:17 As much as I want to share all of my passwords with y'all.
79:25 Okay.
79:29 All right. So, we're going to go to the, you know, the Xbox video store, whatever
79:34 else. I don't need I don't know if this is the right one. Actually,
79:38 cameraman was playing around with it. Oh, right. We can't connect. Okay. So,
79:41 you swipe in, you go settings. I need to connect to a wireless network. It's my
79:46 wireless network. And same thing, as much as I'd love to share my
79:51 my wireless network with you guys.
79:54 Who knows? Maybe some of you are my neighbors. You want to steal my Wi-Fi.
80:00 Uh yes, turn on sharing and connect and all that good stuff. Connected.
80:05 Okay, so let's go back. So,
80:08 uh, let's try to, uh, close this down and then we'll open
80:13 up Xbox Video again.
80:16 So, movie store, television store. Let's just click on something and see what
80:20 happens. Okay. I hope the uh I hope the wireless is
80:24 working now. Yeah, it looks like it's connected. Okay, so here we go. So, I
80:28 want to see um some trailer for
80:32 something. Actually, this probably this probably won't have TV stuff. probably
80:35 won't have a uh a trailer. So, television store. Here we go. Madagascar
80:40 3. So, I want to play a trailer. This is how I do it on Windows RT. So, I
80:48 go to my full screen. I go, "Oh, my brightness isn't right. Settings. Screen
80:54 down. Screen up. Play around with it. I'm
80:58 done." That that my friends is the magic of
81:03 Windows 8 because they have actually thought about this. Not only that, but
81:08 Windows RT is a practical
81:12 office device. Now, I've seen a lot of mixed impressions of the of the pressure
81:18 sensitive touch cover. Um I also have uh
81:21 the other one. I grabbed the uh the type cover as well just so that I could try
81:26 them both out and see what I thought of them. So, the touch cover, is it
81:30 perfect? No. Would I type, you know, would I write Moby Dick on it? No.
81:35 However, is it usable? The answer is
81:39 yes. And I can actually type not bad on
81:43 it. Oh, see, I missed one. Not badly on it. Okay. Bad demo considering I've
81:51 logged about five minutes on it. So
81:57 on it so far. So that is how terrible
82:02 this super thin touch cover is. And the
82:05 type cover is again significantly better. Can you get used to it?
82:09 Absolutely. So is this thing useful as an entertainment platform? Yes. Does it
82:13 allow you to quickly and easily change between the things that you're doing?
82:17 Yes. Is it useful as a productivity device? Absolutely. This is smaller than
82:22 any laptop you're going to encounter. It is more versatile than any laptop you're
82:26 going to encounter. It has better battery life than any laptop you're going to encounter, and it has all of
82:31 the things that are nice about a tablet as well.
82:35 Are the apps there yet? The answer is no. Um, the answer is a definite no, and
82:39 you probably didn't need me to tell you that. But will the apps get there? Um,
82:44 in my mind, yes, they will. However, if
82:48 I was going to be throwing my hard dollars at it or not throwing my
82:51 hard-earned dollars at it, I would probably lean towards waiting for a
82:55 Surface Pro. Um,
83:00 but that doesn't mean that I don't believe in this and that I wouldn't
83:05 necessarily get this. So, and yes, Android can do whatever it wants, but
83:09 I'm really not that sold on Android. Even with jelly bean, even with project
83:12 butter, to me, again, I talked about snappiness earlier on in the live chat
83:17 where I said snappiness to me is everything. This is a uniformly snappy
83:22 experience. It doesn't matter what you do. Whoops. Okay. Well, matters somewhat
83:26 what you do. You have to at least hold it correctly. Um, you want to change
83:30 your orientation. It feels good. It animates well. It
83:34 feels like a device that you just spent a bunch of money on as opposed to
83:38 something where you go like this and it's like E E
83:42 um okay. So there's that. Multitasking on
83:47 it is awesome because you just go like this. You can pick whatever you want to
83:50 do. You can also bring things in.
83:54 Actually, you can't do it with desktop. So hold on. Um I don't have anything
83:58 open on it right now, which is sort of the problem we're having right now. So there's the store. Just going to wait
84:03 for that to open. Then I'm going to show you something else.
84:06 Um okay, let's go back. open IE and the
84:11 modern UI. I've seen a lot of complaints about application launch times and
84:14 honestly I'm not really I'm not really feeling it here here to the other uh
84:18 reviewers out there. So this is another cool thing if I'm like okay I want to
84:22 have Internet Explorer open here reset connection and then I want to have uh
84:27 something else going on. Maybe I'm browsing the store like this on the left
84:31 or whether it's something like Skype or something like an instant messenger
84:34 client. How many of you guys have been using something like an iPad and kind of
84:40 gone, "Oh, why do people keep messaging
84:43 me on Facebook or whatever else?" Because it is such a bear to close down
84:49 whatever you're doing, go to your messaging app,
84:54 type your response, go out of what that is, go back to what
84:59 you were doing. It's stupid. Whereas now you can have that open in the side all
85:04 you want. You can have something else going on and you can actually change
85:08 this split so that it goes this way as well. So you could browse the store and
85:12 then you could have like I don't know you could be monitoring the NCIX forums
85:16 at the same time. And the oh the UI is so smooth here. I'm
85:21 going to bring this closer so you guys can actually see what I'm talking about.
85:24 Hold on. Let me just switch the camera back to manual mode. Uh or auto mode
85:28 rather. There we go. auto mode. I hope you guys can see this. There we go. It's
85:33 just very smooth even when you're navigating like multiple things at a
85:37 time. And it's not the power of the Tegra 3 processor. Let's let's be very
85:40 clear about that because Tegra 3 is nothing special these days. It's just
85:44 the way that they've optimized the OS which means that much better even better
85:48 things are going to be coming in the future. And this is the first time we've
85:53 actually seen anything approaching true multitasking on a mobile platform. So,
85:58 is Windows 8 perfect? No. Is Windows RT
86:02 perfect? No. People are asking me to double tap the
86:06 home button. Why on earth are they asking me to do that? Yeah, who cares about that? You don't have to double tap
86:10 the home button. If you want this functionality, then you can just go like
86:13 this. That's faster to me. You can switch
86:17 between things like that. Or you can go like this and you can switch between all the things. This is not actually faster.
86:22 I don't like um I don't like buttons around the outside. If anything, I'd
86:26 prefer if they didn't have one at all. So, uh, okay.
86:32 No cat in the live chat sucks. Well, I can ask for a cat to come come visit us,
86:39 Rumble. Rumble, do you want to join us?
86:44 Rumble, where are you?
86:48 You going to come join us for the last little bit here?
86:52 All right, we only got a couple minutes left, so let's go back to some Twitter
86:55 questions and uh finish off the evening here.
87:00 Oh, double tap the iPad. Oh,
87:05 oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I know what you guys are talking about. No, no,
87:08 no. Double tap the iPad is a terrible multitasking experience. Oh, but yes,
87:13 you can change brightness in there. You're right. So, you have these options down here. Double tap doesn't even work
87:18 right half the time, though. Come on. especially once you have a wellused iOS
87:22 device. My phone properly detects a
87:26 double tap maybe maybe half the time. So
87:30 there you go. Okay. Yes, double tap can
87:34 be used for some of those as well. But for actual multitasking, like if you go
87:38 back to my other example, which was the one where you're running a Messenger app in the background, yes, you can double
87:43 tap and you can switch to that app. I would argue it's not actually that much
87:47 faster, especially if you're trying to do sort of anything else. And it's just
87:52 I'm you know what, as an iOS user who
87:55 actually likes iOS, I'm just not sold on iOS anymore. The Windows 8 experience
88:00 feels smoother. It does feel better. And guys, I bought this today.
88:09 Nobody sent me one of these. All of my Android tablets are samples. I would not
88:13 buy an Android tablet. based on the experience I've had with it so far. I
88:17 bought this and I bought this. I'm comparing two
88:23 things I bought. I am a fanboy of neither. I am just telling you guys
88:28 these are the experiences I'm having.
88:31 And apparently Rumble's not going to join us. But let's do some more. Let's do some more Twitter stuff. Okay, here
88:36 we go. Try multigenerational with four
88:39 fingers. Um, haven't played around with that yet. Like I said, I haven't spent
88:44 much time with Windows 8 or Windows RT yet, guys. You should use the TSN app on
88:48 Windows 8. I would, but I don't have any sports to uh read about because there's
88:51 no hockey. Best PC speakers in your opinion? Probably the Corsair SP2500's.
88:56 How do you do a print screen on the Surface? I have no idea. Uh control Ps.
89:01 Would imagine that. Uh snipping tool is there. So, there you go. Uh shouldn't be
89:05 rocket science. I mean, that's another thing that's nice is if you know how to
89:08 use a Windows device, you kind of already know how to uh you already kind
89:12 of know how to use Windows 8. So, or wait, did I say control P? It should be
89:16 No, there should be a print screen button. Um, no, I'd probably just use
89:20 snipping tool, I guess. Sniping
89:24 tool. And then I could just create a new
89:27 snip.
89:31 Oh, hold on. Oh. Oh, this won't be a very good demo if I can't figure out how
89:35 to do it. Sniping tool. Yeah. And new.
89:39 There we go. I can create my screenshot. Oh, you guys can't even see what I'm
89:43 doing here. There we go. See? Snipping tool. So, you just search for SNIP and
89:47 then you're good. Um,
89:50 okay. Loving the new set. Nice and casual. This is my living room, not a
89:54 set, just so you know. That's why it's nice and casual and I shouldn't be
89:57 working here. Um, anything wrong with the something
90:01 something? 2,000 RPM fans at 20 dB. Yeah, that's what's wrong with them.
90:05 There's no way that they're that quiet. Would I ever dye my hair blonde again? I
90:09 don't know. I've done it before. I use four fingers and move them up to
90:13 access multitasking on the iPad. That's right. I forgot about that. Um, eh.
90:22 What? 7.1 something. Are the things you unbox sponsored? Some of them. Some of
90:25 them not. Which 660 Ti card would you recommend in terms of performance, heat,
90:29 and sound? Um, I was a big proponent of the power edition, but uh the power
90:34 edition sort of went away, so I don't know what to tell you anymore. Can you
90:38 recommend a mouse like the G9X, but not from Logitech? No. The G9X is from
90:43 Logitech. Um, that's sort of how it is.
90:48 Um, when you have a blackout, how do you cope with it? I use my phone.
90:53 Uh, yes. I have a UPS for the main computers. Mine and my wife's in the
90:57 server. Have I been sent a Hazel CPU yet? Not
91:00 even close, guys. That platform is not even close.
91:04 I know you mentioned the touch experience on desktop. Have you heard about the Leap Motion? I have heard
91:08 about the Leap Motion. Not sold. Um,
91:11 I'll be sold when I actually have a chance to try it and it's amazing, but
91:15 otherwise I think there's a lot of potential for sort of accidental
91:18 misinterpretations. I think um if it's amazing then great. If there's no
91:23 latency, then great. But again, it's this is
91:30 only as good as the leg. So, I haven't tried it yet, so I don't want to say too
91:34 much. Best high performance case fans I want to upgrade. Get Noctuas. They don't
91:38 move a ton of air. I guess they move pretty good air when they're at full voltage, but they're really quiet. Do I
91:43 like rice? Yes, I do. And thank you. I
91:47 like this chair, too. I'm using an ASUS Zonar DX sound card. I'm thinking of
91:51 upgrading to an STX while I see a big improvement. Well, you won't see a big
91:54 improvement, that's for sure. You might hear an improvement. Um, once you go
91:58 from onboard to a sound card, the difference is night and day. No matter
92:01 what sort of speakers or headphones you're using, when you go from one sound card to another sound card, make sure
92:05 you have the make sure you have the audio equipment to deal with it.
92:11 Um, what's better, the Vengeance 1300 or the 5HV2? They're both kind of not
92:16 great. Um, 1300's more comfortable than 5HB, too, so I guess I'd go that route,
92:20 but get 7H if you can afford it? I think Windows 8 looks awesome on the Surface,
92:24 but will programs for video editing be okay, right? Something a lot of people
92:29 are not sure about with Surface. This is an ARM architecture. This CPU is not
92:34 even capable of running your existing x86 or x64 applications. Not even
92:40 capable, even remotely capable. They have to be completely recompiled. Some
92:44 of them completely rewritten. an a Windows RT device can only use
92:48 applications that are downloaded from the Microsoft Store. That's it. When we
92:52 see Windows uh Microsoft Surface Pro with an x86 processor inside, then we're
92:58 going to start talking about using desktop applications on it. This one,
93:01 the desktop is more of a formality. It's
93:05 um it's great for using Office 2013, which is on here, but other than that,
93:10 there's not a whole lot going on for desktop applications.
93:15 So, yeah, that's a big drawback. Um,
93:19 Minecraft is not going to be on Windows 8. Okay. Do I lift? No. Can you explain
93:24 dual pumps in a serial loop? Um, yeah,
93:28 more more more pressure. Um, which is good. More pressure is good. Also,
93:32 redundancy. Um, running pumps in parallel is basically stupid because you
93:37 get more flow rate, but uh you don't get more pressure. And since most of the
93:42 limitations in a water cooling loop are due to pressure drop and not due to
93:46 needing like a higher maximum flow rate, um, serial is great. And then if one of
93:50 your pumps dies, it won't matter because your system will still work. What Z77
93:55 motherboard would you recommend for under 200 bucks? I don't know. Get an M power or Sabertooth. Are those under 200
93:59 bucks? I don't know. What's the history with the Playboy Matt
94:03 thing? I covered this in a previous live stream, but it was a gift sort of. Are
94:08 you ever going to have some special guests to do some live streaming with you? Hopefully at some point, but uh
94:12 this is at like nine o'clock my time, so it's not like many people will want to
94:16 hang out with me at this time. Did you know that Windows 8 has a taskbar for
94:20 each screen natively if you use multimonitors? I did not know that, but that sounds awesome. I have I like I
94:24 said, I haven't used Windows 8 much yet. Uh it's a G9, not a G9X. I love it.
94:30 Double tap, blah blah. Yeah, that's lame multitasking though, compared to what
94:34 we're seeing on Windows. I need iOS lessons. No, I knew all this stuff at
94:38 some point. Like I've used all these all these gestures and things that people
94:41 are showing me, but it's just something that I never really found that practical
94:44 because I wasn't because I wasn't able to multitask effectively and actually
94:48 use two applications at the same time, which you can't. iOS forces you to focus
94:53 one app. Um, it just faded from memory and I never really thought about it too
94:57 much. Personal rig updates anytime soon?
95:00 No. What camera are you using currently?
95:04 I'm using an8 $8,500 camera, so there
95:08 you go. It better be smooth. Uh, it's an
95:12 FS700 from Sony. What do you recommend
95:15 for a big hand gaming mouse that's cheap? Uh, maybe a MionX NOS 3200,
95:20 something like that. Please make a video about the new AMD drivers and
95:23 performance gains in Battlefield 3. Do you really need me to do that? I can just tweet that. Um, AMD has that.
95:30 Dig himself in a hole in regards to Windows 8. I am not digging myself in a
95:34 hole. You will see. Uh, do you think tablets will be around for another
95:38 decade or will they die out as our phones continue to grow in size and function? Well, no. We will always need
95:42 bigger screens. Um, especially older people. And the people who are
95:46 techsavvy, nerdy, geeky people are going to continue to get older. Um, so what
95:51 that's going to mean is their eyesight's going to start sucking, which means they're going to need bigger screens.
95:56 So, no, tablet's never going to disappear. And phones, I think, are
95:59 already as big as they need to be. Um, iPhone 4, iPhone 5 is as big as I ever
96:03 need my phone to be because I want to actually hold my phone like this, like a
96:06 phone. Um, Esther has a Galaxy Note, and
96:10 it's the most ridiculous thing in the world because you're like,
96:14 you know, basically like, yes, hello. And we see
96:19 spoofs about stuff like that, but come on. That's the direction you're heading
96:22 at a certain point. So, no, it's not going to happen. Um, how will the
96:26 Surface play games? Not not at all yet as far as I know other than like casual
96:30 games and I haven't like I said I haven't had much time with it. I played with it a little bit at work today.
96:35 Cameraman played with it more than I did and then I came home. I set up my live
96:39 stream and I'm doing my live stream. So that's what I got. I'm the guy with the
96:43 AGP video card. Found a 9600 GT at the dump. That's awesome. But no, don't get
96:48 a second one. Um what do I do if all my hard drives have been reformatted? My
96:52 main one stopped working on Windows control panel.
96:56 Looks like you're looking at data recovery software at the very least. Um,
97:02 yeah, I'm sorry to hear that. Do I prefer Surface or other manufacturers RT
97:06 tablet? Um, I've only played with the Vivo Tab so far and very little. It
97:10 depends what you're after. I love kickstand. Kickstand is amazing. Um,
97:14 kickstand is like what turns uh Surface
97:18 from a tablet into more like a notebook replacement to me.
97:24 Surface is a little bit um a little bit
97:28 heavy. It's a little bit on the heavier side for what I would sort of like to
97:31 see for a tablet. Um so the Vivo the Vivo Tab is very light. Just awesome
97:37 form factor. Rounded edges. Although I'm not sure I'm sold on rounded edges anymore now that I've felt these beveled
97:41 edges. It feels very natural to hold. It depends what you want. If you want if
97:46 you want something lighter, if you want something you're going to use only as a tablet or if you don't mind having like
97:50 a click in dock. I mean, I love the way
97:54 that the covers attach to Surface. This is just amazing. You just kind of hold
97:58 them like sort of remotely close to each other and it just clicks into place. You
98:02 don't even have to even try to line it up. It's just like done. Um whereas
98:06 ASUS's uh like docking stations, docking
98:10 keyboard stations are a little bit different than that.
98:14 Um dear Linus Tech Tips, can you please look at WD keyboards? Uh yeah, I there's
98:20 so many keyboard brands and people are only so interested in them. Jacob asks
98:25 if I think iPad is dead because of the Surface. Uh no.
98:29 Apple has so much momentum. Um I am a college dropout or flunk out, whichever
98:35 you prefer. What are my thoughts on the upcoming Surface Pro? I'm super excited,
98:39 especially based on what I've seen from Surface.
98:43 And now I've broken everything. Oh, he has 11 followers. Look at that. Uh, I
98:47 love Windows 8, but it's really nothing for me on my desktop PC with touchscreen
98:50 because it's like a thousand feet away. Exactly. Um, I don't I'm not going to be
98:55 telling people to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 on their desktops anytime
98:58 soon. I know you love cats. What do you think about dogs? I think they smell,
99:02 but otherwise, I love them. Love their attitude. Great attitude, champ. But you
99:06 smell bad. Go outside. That's my sort of take on dogs. They're also way too much
99:10 work. When we got the cats, we were kind of like neither of us were home very
99:13 much. We both work a lot, so it was like having a dog wouldn't be fair. Um, I'll
99:17 probably do the dog thing once the kids demand it. That would be that would be
99:22 the threshold for me. Although, I regret putting this up on the internet now
99:25 because they're going to find this stream and they're going to remind me that I told my my internet viewers that
99:31 I was going to get a dog at some point and they're going to make me do it. But we'll see. Uh, what do I think of Linux
99:36 as a gaming platform? Absolutely nothing. I think it'll be 20 years
99:40 before Linux even makes headroom. Okay, maybe 10 years. But yeah. Um, do I
99:47 know anywhere blah blah custom laptop? Don't get a custom laptop. Get a real
99:51 laptop. Um, what do you think about Surface as a controller for media on
99:54 your desktop? I think that um convincing people that they have to have a tablet.
99:59 Until tablets reach the same kind of price points as something like an Nexus
100:02 7 where it's like at or under $200, then it's very hard to convince me to do that
100:07 because I don't carry a tablet around with me, which means that either that
100:12 tablet would live near my TV and it would live on my coffee table to be used
100:16 for that or to be used here and it would like its charging station would be like
100:19 here in the corner or it would be my tablet and it would be like wherever I
100:23 left it around my house. And come on, let's face it. TV watchers, even
100:26 compared to PC gamers, are like the laziest guys ever. Um, are they going to
100:32 go upstairs to get the remote or are they just going to watch TV? They're
100:35 going to watch TV. So, no, I'm not sold on that. Uh, really want one of those
100:41 changed to blah blah blah blah blah. Is there going to be any future with socket
100:44 1155? No, there won't be. You are stuck at 3770K.
100:48 So,
100:51 here will be the grand actually. Okay, I'll do one more Twitter question. I'm
100:55 going to do whatever is the top when I refresh it here. 115 120 new
100:59 interactions. You guys are killing me here. When you watch TV, what shows do
101:03 you watch minus? Um I I watch pretty
101:07 much anything Seth McFarland works on. So your family guys, your American dads.
101:12 Um particularly American Dad would be my favorite out of his stable these days.
101:16 Uh love South Park. South Park is my favorite show by a long shot. Um, love
101:21 Futurama, although I thought the most recent season started off kind of weak
101:25 or the the comeback season started off kind of weak, but then got a lot
101:29 stronger as things went on. Um, most
101:32 yeah, mostly animated stuff. I've watched all the way through House. I
101:35 love Seinfeld, but these aren't things that I watch over and over again. I
101:38 don't watch much TV because what I discover is that um, every time I start
101:43 a show, if I don't enjoy it, then I'm wasting my time. And if I do enjoy it,
101:48 then I don't sleep. Like it's like
101:51 books. Like I love reading. Last time I was on vacation on my honeymoon, I
101:56 burned through something like 28 novels in the two weeks, two and a
102:00 half weeks I was gone. And uh like because once I pick it up, I can't put
102:04 it down. So if I have other responsibilities like filming videos or
102:07 going to work, then it's very very difficult for me to watch TV or read
102:11 books because I they consume my life very quickly. Um, actually Elliot asked
102:16 a good question. What do you think about Microsoft Smart Glass? I think that Gen
102:20 One is kind of neat. Um, and that it's really going to be more like Gen Two or
102:25 once we see some more software revisions before that kind of thing is really,
102:29 really cool. So, live unboxing of the
102:32 Darth Vader PEZ dispenser.
102:38 Okay, here I'm going to get a little bit closer here for you guys so you can
102:42 collect them all. So, there is Emperor
102:45 Palpatine, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, R2-D23, C3PO, and Yoda. Although, I wish
102:50 they'd just take Darth Maul off there because he's the only thing that's uh
102:54 keeping this from being entirely original trilogy, which would make it
102:57 better. There's instructions for loading in the candy. There's also nutritional
103:01 facts about Pez candy in general. I suspect uh for nutrition, they should
103:06 just put something along the lines of none and leave it at that. I mean, PEZ
103:10 isn't going to kill you, but it's not going to do anything positive for you either. Let's go ahead and open this bad
103:16 boy up. A comes with two
103:20 PEZ packets. And do they come pre-loaded? No, they do not. I don't
103:24 know. It's been a long time since I've had PEZ. So, to load a PEZ dispenser,
103:28 you open it up. Look, Darth Vader has a long neck. Oh, and it closed. Okay, so
103:33 let's open up a PEZ packet here. And uh
103:37 not labeled for individual sale. Fascinating. What do you wait? What do
103:40 you think, guys? Lemon candy or strawberry candy? So, we got strawberry.
103:45 See if that focuses. I don't think it's gonna Oh, no. It's not in manual. All right. It's not auto mode. Let's go auto
103:50 mode. This is probably been out of focus the whole time. Okay, there we go.
103:53 Strawberry. Still not going to focus for me. Whatever. Screw you, camera. Or
103:58 lemon. You can tell from the colors. Okay, I got votes for strawberry. I got
104:02 votes for lemon. Oh, I think I see more lemon votes in the Twitch chat. So,
104:06 there we go. I'm gonna open up the lemon here.
104:10 All right. See, we're having fun. We have fun on this live stream. All right.
104:14 I got my I got my uh got my lemon candies here. Although, some of the
104:19 paper clung to the candy, and I'm having a little bit of troubles kind of loading
104:23 this in. It's been a long time since I've done this, you guys. I'm like 26
104:26 now, so PEZ hasn't exactly been a part of my life for uh for a number of years.
104:32 Um let's go ahead and put that in there.
104:37 I mean, not that I'm saying you can outgrow PEZ because that's not what I'm saying at all. I was excited as excited
104:41 to get my new Darth Vader Pez dispenser as I was to ever get any PEZ dispenser
104:46 ever before in my life as well. So, let's just go ahead and try to put that
104:51 in there. You can save strawberry for later, says
104:55 one of the Twitch Twitch contributors tonight. Yes, I can. Thank you. I will
105:01 save the strawberry for later. So, I'm finishing up the lemon. And that
105:07 pretty much wraps up the live stream for tonight. Darth Vader has been loaded.
105:12 This is my Darth Vader Pez dispenser. And let's see if I can get it to
105:15 actually focus here. It could be that like manual focus isn't on. Focus auto.
105:20 Yeah, no, autofocus is on. I don't know. Whatever. This is the Darth Vader Pez
105:23 dispenser. That will be the prize, crown jewel of my Pez dispenser collection of
105:28 one because I only have one. And
105:33 that wraps up this live stream. Now I'm going to like make out with Darth Vader.
105:37 Get some candy, get some sugar. Thank you for tuning in. May the force be with
105:42 you all and good night.
