0:00 samsung's galaxy note 7 was such an incredible step forward for Android
0:05 phone design as a whole that i like many people
0:08 couldn't help but get wrapped up in a whirlwind romance
0:13 but like the bad girl who lights your world on fire
0:17 then lights your house on fire our relationship was over as fast as it
0:22 began so is the note 8
0:25 a note 7 with the arsonist tendencies
0:28 removed and is that even enough a year
0:32 later let's find out
0:42 i buy power and MSI's new lineup of gaming laptops feature Intel 7th
0:47 generation core i7 processors check them out at the link below the most
0:52 immediately obvious feature of the note 8 is the same nearly bezel-less design
0:57 and 18 and a half by nine aspect ratio OLED screen is the galaxy s8 but
1:03 bigger indeed at 6.3 inches this is the
1:06 biggest screen they've ever crammed into a note device and i want to get this out
1:11 of the way very early in the video whether you prefer the default more
1:15 vivid color profile or the more true to the original content developer mode srgb
1:21 tweaked one content consumption on this device is an
1:25 unbelievable experience if you love scrolling vertically then whether
1:30 it's photos or text you'll be seeing more of it and bigger than ever before
1:36 and i'm not sure if they planned it this way
1:39 but the perfect black levels of the OLED screen makes 21x9 content appear as
1:45 though it has a perfectly even frame around it that's super small it's less
1:50 like watching a movie on your phone and more like holding a movie in your hand
1:56 unfortunately you'll also be holding the audio in your hand
2:02 even apple has finally implemented earpiece assisted stereo sound so what's
2:08 the excuse samsung is this just a courageous move to assume
2:13 that most users who give a crap about sound are using bluetooth or headphones
2:17 at this point that's possible but it still really
2:21 detracts from what could be what i would describe as the near
2:25 perfect mobile movie watching experience
2:29 let's talk about handling i praised the note 7's hold ability with my
2:35 fun-sized hands and some of the same ergonomic tweaks
2:38 return here notably the two-sided curved glass and
2:44 very similar 75 millimeter width with
2:47 nice flat sides that give you a little bit more edge to hold on to
2:52 but the taller screen comes at a cost here
2:56 the note 8 weighs so much more than its predecessor that even though i haven't
3:01 held one of those in months it was obvious to me the first time i touched
3:06 it and it hurts accessibility of both
3:09 top of the screen ui elements like the compose button in samsung's sms app and
3:15 the rear-facing fingerprint sensor from a natural holding position which is
3:20 another disappointment every note device has had something
3:25 noteworthy about it that has set it apart from the s line
3:29 a balls to the wall CPU epic expandability something
3:34 with the note 7 it was the iris scanner which is back and it's pretty handy when
3:39 i'm not outside and it works but what i was really hoping for was the
3:43 rumored under screen fingerprint sensor to bring that back to the front of the
3:48 device and instead of that i got
3:52 i don't know what did i get well compared to the s8 plus it's the
3:57 same 10 nanometer CPU same GPU uh we got
4:01 six gigs of RAM versus four on the micro sd expandable 64 gig storage version and
4:07 i guess we got a dual camera system so it better be a pretty amazing camera
4:12 then right well i'm not going to complain because
4:16 the s8 and iphone 7 are already as good as i feel is reasonable to ask of a cell
4:21 phone at this point anything else is icing and to be clear
4:25 it's better samsung's color science still isn't as
4:29 true to life as apple's but in a way that will probably appeal to lots of
4:33 mainstream folks and i definitely appreciate the easy configuration and
4:38 advanced control options available in their app finally as a daily samsung user their
4:43 lightning fast double tap camera launch continues to allow me to capture
4:47 precious moments with my kids and pets that i would otherwise miss
4:53 it's just that i'm not an artistic photo
4:56 taker meaning that their post-processing blur effect
5:00 on top of looking unnatural next to true bokeh
5:03 doesn't do much for me i super appreciate the 2x optical zoom and the
5:09 optical image stabilization on both of the 12 megapixel rear cameras
5:14 but overall a dual camera system wasn't enough to sell me on the iphone 7 plus
5:18 so it's not enough here and in samsung's case the photos from the zoom camera are
5:24 significantly softer than the wide so a fair bit of the difference can often be
5:28 made up with digital zoom anyway okay then what about the style
5:33 excuse me uh s pen well what to say about that it's cool
5:38 you can highlight text for translation uh sketch or jot down difficult to input
5:42 things like math formulas more accurately and with less latency than
5:46 ever before and they've added a whack of cool features for it including notably
5:51 the ability to jot down up to a hundred pages of memos
5:55 without ever turning your screen on thanks to the always-on OLED display
6:00 i just personally find that not all
6:04 but much of what it does can be easily accomplished with my fingers in the time
6:09 that it takes to remove the s pen from its holster adjust my grip and start
6:14 using it it's certainly not something that i
6:17 would personally give up 200 milliamp hours of battery life for it if given
6:22 the choice which is a drag because getting back to
6:26 our s8 plus versus note comparison that is one difference along with price
6:32 that favors the s8 plus battery life on
6:35 the phone that can do it all is just not
6:39 that impressive something samsung seems to be aware of given that it ships with
6:44 a battery saving resolution downscaling tweak enabled by default
6:49 raising the question of why they bother putting a
6:52 2960x1440 screen on it in the first place and speaking of things i wish they
6:57 hadn't included a non-reprogrammable dedicated button for
7:02 their digital assistant bixby let's say for a minute that i love bixby
7:07 let's say i was blown away by the way that you can basically execute macros on
7:12 your phone i would still understand the point of view of people who think that a
7:17 computer vision based shopping feature that can't recognize a bloody iphone
7:22 doesn't need a dedicated button and i would still lobby samsung to look past
7:28 their own arrogance to the demands of their customers a significant percentage
7:33 of which have gone out of their way to download some janky third-party app in
7:38 order to be able to remap the thing
7:41 so then nutshell time i still mostly like the tweaks in the
7:46 latest iteration of touchwiz screenshot and clipboard management is epic and
7:51 samsung's keyboard prediction is actually better than ever
7:54 but especially at this price i can't help but notice that samsung played it
7:59 really safe this time no squeeze input
8:03 no dolby atmos no built-in sundial no quantum leap forward
8:09 in industrial design the note 8 is not
8:14 bad it's arguably the most versatile phone
8:17 on the market it does everything
8:21 it just feels like for some reason when samsung removed the fire from the note 7
8:27 the spark of our love went out too
8:31 one thing i probably should have mentioned in the main video is how freaking slippery the back of the note 8
8:36 is without a sexy dbrand skin it's just
8:39 something that didn't really occur to me until i was shooting this dbrand
8:42 integration after the fact with dbrand you can not only protect your device
8:47 from incidental scuffs and scratches but you can make it look better and hold
8:52 better too i personally recommend their dragon skin but they've also got a wide
8:57 variety of different vibrant colors and textures that are all authentic 3m vinyl
9:03 the best part of dbrand's site is that it takes out the guesswork you just go
9:06 through their configurator pick out the skins that you like they ship it to you
9:10 affordably worldwide not to mention extremely quickly and the whole
9:14 installation process just takes a few minutes so go check them out at the link
9:19 in the video description and skin up your device today
9:23 or like in a couple days when it arrives
