0:00 there aren't many better ways to capture a moment in time than taking a great
0:04 photo but how do you do this when that moment passes in the blink of an eye and
0:09 the photo you took comes out super blurry or what if you want to capture a
0:14 sense of movement in a photo but you don't want it to look like one giant
0:19 smear this is where knowing how to properly
0:22 adjust your camera's shutter speed can be the key to getting your shots perfect
0:27 along with aperture and iso which we previously covered here on techwiki
0:33 shutter speed is one of the three key exposure variables that will affect how
0:37 a picture looks shutter speed is simply a measure of how
0:41 long the cameras you guessed it shutter
0:45 stays open to let light through unlike aperture which is a measure of
0:50 how wide the shutter opens and iso which
0:53 controls the sensitivity to light the shutter speed directly affects how long
0:58 the camera will physically see whatever
1:02 it's pointed at meaning that if you have two cameras pointing at the same moving
1:06 object but with significantly different shutter speeds the two pictures will
1:11 come out looking dramatically different
1:14 why is this well if you have your camera set to a
1:18 slow shutter speed the shutter will be open long enough to capture a fast
1:22 moving object traveling from one place to another and since you're recording a
1:27 still image not a video which is comprised of
1:31 multiple still images this will just come out as a blur a fast shutter speed
1:36 on the other hand will open and close so quickly that you won't see much motion
1:41 at all just like it's harder for you to perceive something as actually moving if
1:46 you open and shut your eyes very very quickly so the result then is a frozen
1:52 moment captured in the photo without blurring now typically shutter speeds
1:57 are measured in fractions of a second with speeds between 1 60th of a second
2:02 and 1 250th of a second being common for
2:06 everyday photography such as landscape shots or casual portraits of your
2:10 friends but what if you're getting shots of something like a basketball game where
2:15 the players are running up and down the court or you're doing nature photography
2:19 and need to capture a fast-moving bird or wildcat
2:23 this is where much quicker shutter speeds come in handy to prevent blurring
2:28 and higher end cameras can have shutter speeds as quick as 1 4 000
2:32 or 1 8 000 of a second and some highly
2:36 specialized cameras can even handle one sixteen thousandth of a setting that can
2:41 capture really cool shots like a bullet
2:44 as it travels through the air well hold on a second then
2:48 our fast shutter times always the best thing then
2:52 well although slow shutter speeds can produce
2:55 undesirable blur in some situations in
2:58 others they can produce really cool effects that you just can't get any
3:03 other way have you ever seen those shots of cities
3:06 at night where highway traffic just looks like long red and white streaks
3:12 those were produced by using long shutter speeds of two seconds or even
3:17 longer because while things like buildings and street signs will stay in
3:21 one place the cars are obviously moving
3:24 meaning that you can get those cool light streaks without making the city
3:28 around them look blurry slow shutter speeds are also useful for making
3:33 waterfalls look like they're moving without affecting the rest of the photo
3:37 and even showing the movement of stars across the night sky where a shutter
3:42 might be open for hours at a time just
3:45 make sure you're using a really stable tripod or something else to keep your
3:50 camera in one place so that final shot looks crisp and sharp another thing to
3:55 keep in mind is that shutter speed affects the amount of light hitting your
3:59 image sensor so make sure that you're adjusting your
4:02 iso and your aperture to compensate if you're going to be experimenting with
4:07 really fast or really slow shutter speeds but once you master shutter speed
4:11 you'll be able to do some extremely cool things with your camera if you're in the
4:15 right place at the right time you might even get some sick shots of taryn
4:19 pulling off stunts on his razer scooter
4:22 and somewhat ironically this is a video about still photography today's episode
4:26 sponsor is videoblocks whose unlimited
4:29 library remains the best deal in stock footage you can get unlimited downloads
4:35 from a library of over 10 million dollars worth of footage we're
4:39 talking after effects templates motion backgrounds all kinds of great stuff and
4:44 they are now adding new footage to the unlimited library twice a month and
4:49 subscribers get free access to the new footage at no additional cost as always
4:55 it's 100 royalty free and yours to use
4:58 forever in personal or commercial projects videoblocks has also now
5:03 launched a marketplace where contributors get 100 commission and the
5:07 customers save so they don't take a cut and pass the savings directly onto the
5:12 customers which is an average of 40 percent on hd and 4k downloads versus
5:17 competition like shutterstock and pond5
5:20 so the unlimited library and the marketplace makes it your one-stop shop
5:24 for footage and you can get unlimited access to the unlimited library with
5:28 your membership awesome with just two
5:31 downloads the 99 annual subscription pays for itself and if you have more
5:36 specific footage knees buying directly from the global contributor community
5:40 makes a ton of sense so all you've got
5:43 to do is head over to our videoblocks link in the video description to sign up
5:47 for a seven day free trial which gives you 140 free hd clips valued at 49 bucks
