0:00 All right, welcome to Scrapyard Wars,
0:01 where Luke and I try to build the best computers we can
0:05 with a set of guidelines and a fixed budget.
0:08 So this is our first episode.
0:10 We're looking for a lot of feedback from you guys
0:12 about what we can do to make these fun
0:13 and interesting in the future.
0:15 But for today's challenge, we are keeping it very simple.
0:18 $300 cash, the very best gaming rig
0:21 that we can build with a few rules.
0:24 So number one is no monitor or other peripherals required.
0:28 We only have to build the tower.
0:31 No worker research can be pre-done,
0:32 so you can't go on websites or Craigslist
0:35 and try to find things before or in between.
0:37 Each participant gets a total of eight hours
0:40 to actually find everything,
0:41 and then four hours to build it, tune it, and benchmark it.
0:46 I'm not paying any overtime on this,
0:48 so we are staying inside those guidelines.
0:51 No leveraging friends, social media contacts,
0:54 coworkers, or anything of that sort.
0:56 Overclocking is allowed.
0:57 We'll be measuring performance
0:58 of the machines using 3DMark Firestrike,
1:01 Tomb Raider 2013, and Dirt 3.
1:04 And along with the no peripherals thing,
1:06 it's just a tower that you need,
1:07 no operating system or anything like that.
1:09 So let's get to it, shall we?
1:12 Scratch Wars.
1:19 Here we go.
1:23 You have exceeded your daily transaction limit.
1:26 Please take your receipt.
1:28 I see.
1:29 Declined.
1:32 Okay, then.
1:34 I'ma go inside.
1:35 I have the cashola.
1:43 There you are.
1:43 Thank you.
1:46 All right.
1:48 Let's go, shall we?
1:50 Good luck.
1:56 I should have known he'd never fall for that.
1:58 I'm fairly sure he's going to waste time
2:01 going back to the office.
2:03 I brought a laptop with me,
2:06 so I will begin immediately.
2:09 I really hope it's charged.
2:11 There's a store somewhere in Vancouver.
2:14 I think it's called Reboot.
2:16 It's a non-for-profit little store thing
2:19 that kind of refurbishes computers
2:22 and sells computers and does kind of cheap repairs
2:24 and stuff for people that need it.
2:26 And I think if I can participate in this contest
2:29 and support a company that tries to,
2:31 like they do really cheap computer repairs
2:33 and I know they try to like,
2:35 I think they do some charity,
2:36 giving computers to people and stuff.
2:39 If I can help them out,
2:40 get a cheap computer from them
2:41 and participate in the contest,
2:43 then that's doing many things well at once.
2:46 So I'm going to try and see if I can do that.
2:49 I'm going to contact them,
2:50 figure out what their hours are and go from there.
2:52 Now we're rocking.
2:54 Here.
2:57 Jesus.
3:02 All right, so should we start on,
3:03 red flag deals used to be a haunt for me.
3:06 I used to find a lot of good stuff there.
3:08 The line is tech tips, buy, sell, trade.
3:10 That Craig's list.
3:12 Do you want me to call Anthony?
3:13 Ah, oh, that.
3:16 No, we're not allowed to leverage friends.
3:18 And this is where the like, montage,
3:19 montage music has to come in.
3:21 Dun, dun, dun, dun.
3:35 That might be the best we can do.
3:37 And then this guy also had a hard drive for 20 bucks.
3:43 Oh, he looks detected.
3:45 Does he?
3:47 Okay, good.
3:48 Excellent.
3:55 That means literally nothing.
3:57 So an Intel Core 2 Duo with 80 Gigabyte hard drive.
4:02 Oh God.
4:02 And two gigabytes of RAM for 50 bucks though.
4:09 So that leaves me $250 to get a graphics card.
4:12 Let me give them a call.
4:21 This is why we don't make TV shows.
4:23 There seems to be a pretty significant drop in price
4:25 once you get to Core 2 Duo range.
4:28 So I'm looking for that
4:29 because I think that'll be fine for most of the games.
4:31 It'll fall behind a bit for sure on a Tomb Raider.
4:37 Are they gonna come to concede defeat?
4:39 Where are they going?
4:40 They're not allowed to take out more money.
4:41 Oh, they're trying to film things better
4:43 than just pointing the camera at me in the car.
4:46 How innovative.
4:46 That seems unnecessary.
4:48 Whoa.
4:49 This could be, oh, is this that same frigging guy?
4:53 Well, he has a case.
4:54 He has a CX 500 power supply too.
4:56 If I hear back from this guy,
4:57 I don't think Lou's gonna think to check Kijiji.
5:00 Okay, 45.
5:02 And then this is a combo.
5:04 And then this is a combo.
5:07 Ooh, computer cases with power supplies and other hardware.
5:14 Phone calls only, please.
5:16 All right, here we go.
5:19 Hi.
5:20 Hi, you have a Craigslist listing
5:21 for computer cases with power supplies.
5:23 $10 or something.
5:26 So do you have anything reasonably new
5:28 with a 24-pin power supply
5:29 and compatibility for a micro ATX board,
5:32 like some kind of standard board,
5:33 or is it all gonna be non-standard like Dell HP stuff?
5:36 That's an Athlon?
5:37 Oh, okay.
5:38 That's a little older than I need.
5:40 I'm looking for an entry-level gaming PC.
5:43 If you can just tell me what CPUs the systems that you have.
5:46 I'm very familiar with the hardware.
5:49 I know what I'm looking for.
5:50 I just need to know what you have.
5:53 If you're in contact with somebody
5:54 who can help you with the parts you need.
5:57 Oh, okay.
5:58 That might actually be very helpful.
6:01 What's your name?
6:02 My name's Linus.
6:04 If you wanna build a-
6:23 What I'm trying to accomplish is today,
6:25 I wanna find my platform.
6:26 So everything I'll need.
6:28 And then tomorrow, essentially,
6:29 I wanna spend the entire time finding
6:31 the best possible price that I can on a GPU.
6:34 That's like my whole plan tomorrow.
6:37 Pick up.
6:38 I just found another computer.
6:41 Same price, but it's actually $5 cheaper.
6:42 It has a 450-watt power supply.
6:44 That's probably fine.
6:46 Four gigs of RAM.
6:47 So that's a slight improvement there.
6:48 Four gigs of RAM, that's probably good enough.
6:50 And then an E8400 again.
6:53 I'm kinda surprised he hasn't just tried to like
6:55 leave and go into some little computer shop
6:57 and get them to give him a deal because of who he is.
7:01 That was my full expectation the whole time.
7:02 And then he put up
7:05 the rule that we can't use our influence.
7:09 I was like, wow.
7:10 Because that's exactly what I expected him to do.
7:13 So now I'm not sure how he's gonna cheat.
7:15 .
7:16 I don't even know that he's going to.
7:22 Never cheat at all.
7:24 You know what we should do?
7:25 Is we should look really excited when we pull out
7:28 and we should look like we're heading somewhere, okay?
7:32 We'll give them a little, a little farewell beep beep.
7:35 You know?
7:41 I don't even know how to use Craigslist.
7:43 First stop is going to be the Salvation Army thrift store.
7:49 This isn't a computer.
7:55 That was bad.
7:56 That was really bad.
7:57 I hope Linus' time is not, not going well.
7:59 Continue on Langley Bypass 14.
8:01 If I just throw the car under a semi, we'll be okay.
8:03 We can avoid, we can avoid judgment at the end of the,
8:06 at the end of the contest when we have no computer
8:08 because there's no computers at thrift shops
8:11 and Linus magically found something on Craigslist.
8:14 I'm hoping that they don't have like computer-savvy employees.
8:19 So they might undervalue a certain tower
8:22 compared to another one.
8:23 Like they might price two of them at the same price.
8:25 And one of them is actually clearly better.
8:27 Fingers crossed.
8:35 Is this literally?
8:36 Is this literally a clothing store now?
8:41 You're kicked out anyways.
8:45 Hi.
8:48 Hi.
8:49 I'm actually contacting a few guys
8:50 that are selling computer parts.
8:51 May I ask which one?
8:54 Dilbert.
8:55 Ah, yeah, that's right.
8:57 Hi.
8:58 I'm just generally looking for everything right now.
9:00 I don't have any of the components locked in
9:02 and I need to get everything by about midday tomorrow
9:05 as a birthday presents.
9:06 What would we be looking at for something like a Q60,
9:08 600 and a board?
9:10 Oh, something like that.
9:11 It's like $80.
9:14 Still leaves me needing, I don't know.
9:15 I don't know.
9:16 A case power supply.
9:17 Do you have any like super cheapo, stupid stuff?
9:20 Yeah, a case and power supply.
9:21 Okay, I'm not worried about the case looking great.
9:24 He doesn't see real well.
9:29 Well, I can throw the power supply and case into the 200.
9:32 For the 200?
9:34 You know what?
9:35 I will call you back before the end of your shop time today.
9:38 So I'll call you back in the next hour or so.
9:40 And I'll let you know if I'm gonna come by tomorrow morning
9:42 and pick this stuff up.
9:43 Sounds like this might be the deal that helps me out here.
9:47 All right, thank you very much.
9:48 Take care.
9:49 Take care.
9:50 Maybe it was worthwhile
9:51 to listen to that life story after all.
9:53 We might've just gotten everything but a video card
9:55 with a hundred dollar budget for a graphics card leftover.
9:58 Okay, but that might be like plus tax
10:01 because this is-
10:02 Oh no.
10:04 Well, let's hope it's not.
10:06 I got an email back from the guy
10:07 that I actually wanted to respond the most.
10:09 This was the guy with the E8400
10:11 that had four gigabytes of DDR3 as well
10:13 and the 500 Gigabyte hard drive.
10:14 It's not the greatest price, but that's an option.
10:18 He's available right now,
10:19 which is good.
10:19 So I need to figure out if I can get a,
10:22 what I can get for a graphics card for 220 bucks.
10:25 If I can get something good enough,
10:28 which I think I can,
10:30 I think I'll go with it.
10:33 Linus speaking.
10:37 Yes, I did.
10:39 Oh, hi, hi.
10:46 I, okay, I gotta be upfront with you.
10:50 I can't leverage being me as a negotiation strategy.
10:54 So you have to pretend that I'm not who I am.
10:58 So I don't need a water-cooled card.
11:01 I need an air-cooled card,
11:03 which means that since I don't have any budget left over
11:09 for the rest of the system,
11:10 I pretty much have to get an all-in-one liquid cooler
11:14 for $100 minus whatever I pay for your card.
11:21 So that's where I'm at.
11:24 I have got no leads on an all-in-one liquid cooler
11:27 and I have to have this done by the end of the day tomorrow.
11:37 Is there now?
11:40 Is there?
11:46 I see that.
11:48 That would be just like an extra dollar, like 20, 20.
11:52 Yeah, can you do 80?
11:56 Yeah, I guess I could, yeah.
11:57 Okay, can I pick it up today or tomorrow?
12:03 Can I come tomorrow morning?
12:10 You're in Richmond, correct?
12:13 In Burnaby, actually.
12:13 You're in Burnaby.
12:19 I think I'm gonna be in Burnaby anyway.
12:21 Like I'm doing a bit of computer hardware
12:24 pickup stuff tomorrow.
12:25 So I will be, I'll be around.
12:29 So tell you what, why don't you just pick somewhere,
12:31 somewhere safe near wherever it is you live,
12:33 like a Starbucks or whatever.
12:35 And then just let me know.
12:37 You've got my number.
12:38 So if you just text me the address
12:39 and what time works for you,
12:40 I'll be there tomorrow morning.
12:45 Okay, all right, thank you.
12:50 That would be no problem.
12:54 All right, take care.
12:58 Okay, we have secured a GTX 580 for $80.
13:04 If they can get a slightly faster CPU
13:06 than us, like maybe an 1155 core i5 quad core,
13:11 something along those lines,
13:12 even if they have a slightly lesser video card,
13:15 they might still come out ahead.
13:16 If they get a similar video card, better CPU,
13:19 then we're in real trouble.
13:21 But basically this is gonna,
13:24 I need to make sure our power supply has support
13:27 for GTX 580.
13:29 That's a pretty power hungry card.
13:33 I wonder what they're up to.
13:35 Hopefully spinning their wheels, finding nothing.
13:39 All right, so I got the computer.
13:41 Everything works.
13:42 He booted it up for me.
13:43 I got to inspect everything.
13:45 It's fine.
13:46 I didn't haggle them down anymore.
13:48 So I got it for 80 bucks, which I think is fine.
13:51 We'll have to see what Linus got,
13:53 but that seems like an okay deal
13:54 for an 8400 computer to me.
13:56 The inside is really nice and clean.
13:58 So I was happy to see that.
13:59 It looks like he took good care of it
14:00 or at least took good care of it right before I got there.
14:04 Not entirely sure which one, but anyways.
14:08 Kind of baller RAM.
14:09 I didn't expect this.
14:10 Okay, maybe not actually baller,
14:11 but it's gold plated.
14:13 Well, not really gold plated,
14:14 gold painted OCZ memory,
14:17 which I thought was kind of funny.
14:19 There's the E8400.
14:20 The fan, CPU fan and everything
14:22 is in immaculate condition, which is great.
14:25 Let me get this back in here.
14:26 One quick second.
14:27 I thought it was kind of funny
14:28 the optical drive isn't even hooked up,
14:29 but I wouldn't use it anyways.
14:31 So the power supply though
14:35 is kind of like the most sketchy balls thing ever.
14:37 It's a Powerlink 450 watt.
14:38 It's a Powerlink 450 watt.
14:39 But yeah, I don't know.
14:42 No PCIe power whatsoever.
14:46 There's two molexes though,
14:47 so I can adapt her off for that.
14:49 So I don't know.
14:50 We'll just kind of have to see.
14:51 So this will be my base platform.
14:53 I'll see if I need to get a new power supply
14:55 and then yeah, we'll go from there.
14:59 This is really awkward
15:00 because I've just made appointments
15:03 with our GTX 580 water cooled card
15:06 and our cooler for it,
15:07 which are totaling a hundred dollars.
15:09 But someone just accepted it.
15:10 Our offer for a hundred dollars on a 7950.
15:14 So I'm going to do a little bit of research
15:15 into overclocking the 580 and overclocking the 7950,
15:19 but I'm going to feel like a real bad dude,
15:22 but I might have to bail on those guys
15:24 and take the better offer.
15:25 The problem is that now I have to go get it tonight,
15:29 which means I might have to take like the kids with me.
15:31 So.
15:34 Save on select Intel Core i7 processors
15:37 and 730 series SSDs with instant rebates
15:39 during Valentine's week, February 14th to 24th.
15:42 First, 2015.
15:43 Click now to learn more.
15:46 So did we decide about going to get things tonight?
15:51 I can't.
15:53 Well, that's very interesting then.
15:54 I have a call to make.
15:55 Also, you can't do any more Craigslisting stuff
15:59 after six.
16:03 You're cheating already.
16:04 I'm not cheating.
16:05 What are you doing right now?
16:08 Replying to a message.
16:09 There was a, okay.
16:10 I had to, I had, no, I had to do other stuff.
16:13 I've been back here for a bit.
16:14 I had to like record a voiceover and stuff.
16:16 No, have I been here?
16:17 Have I been working?
16:18 Is there, is there actual?
16:20 Oh, I don't know Linus.
16:21 See, oh, Terran's agreeing with me.
16:24 Wow.
16:25 Dicks.
16:27 Hey Linus, Terran's got that big 4K monitor.
16:29 Can I have that now?
16:30 No.
16:33 This isn't 4K.
16:33 And that's not 4K anymore.
16:36 Sorry, I can't come down to get anything tonight.
16:39 So I might have to pass.
16:41 If anything changes, I will,
16:42 I will give a call tomorrow to, to let you know.
16:47 If it comes to that, then,
16:50 if it's not too much to ask,
16:52 maybe take the card out with you
16:53 and I could come to you wherever you happen to be.
16:55 Cause it's a bit of a scavenger hunt situation
16:57 I've got going on.
16:58 Thanks.
16:59 My number is 310-1010 Pizza Hut.
17:02 Good night.
17:04 There.
17:04 I'm done for the night.
17:05 There.
17:07 It's all I'm doing tonight.
17:13 Next time on Scrapyard Wars,
17:15 Linus gets a tetanus shot,
17:16 Luke gets mugged,
17:18 and Nick fights a dingo.
17:20 I know, stick off you bloody dingo.
17:21 Uh, none of that actually.
17:22 Uh, none of that actually. Uh, none of that actually. Uh, none of that actually. Uh, none of that actually.
17:23 happens.
17:24 Or does it?
