0:00 so there are a lot of great reasons to use a test bench instead of a
0:04 conventional case uh let's say for example you
0:08 like the look or maybe you swap your hardware out
0:11 really frequently or i mean those are really the main reasons
0:15 that you might want to do it anyway we use tons of them here at Linus media group because we're constantly
0:19 benchmarking graphics cards cpus coolers all sorts of things basically all of our
0:24 writers have one or even two or three test benches in the case of Anthony
0:28 but as you guys might know
0:32 money's been a little tight around here ever since i broke that xeon platinum
0:36 CPU so we needed some new test benches but
0:40 we didn't have the funds for these open bench tables that we like so much
0:48 enter aliexpress where we got this test bench
0:52 for how much uh was actually a little bit under 30
0:56 how bad could it be
0:59 definitely not as good as our sponsor for today's video
1:04 freshbooks freshbooks accounting software is custom built for how you
1:07 want to work helping you stay organized and productive try out their 30 day free
1:12 trial at freshbooks.com forward slash tech tips we'll have that linked below
1:25 so the open bench table here is pretty much what we consider to be the gold
1:28 standard in test benches it does have some drawbacks for example their
1:31 radiator mounting could be vastly improved
1:35 but it's completely tool-less it's really easy to access it folds
1:39 completely flat and it fits pretty much all the hardware that you could want for
1:45 95 of the testing that you'd want to do without any restricted ability to get at
1:51 things or any restrictions in terms of cooling the problem is that how much do
1:55 these ones cost uh 200 200 it's a lot of
1:59 shekels so we've got a static safe packing foam
2:04 in here not that i'm too concerned about any of these things being sensitive to
2:08 static we've got some instructions that are
2:11 chinese only but fairly pictographical so i think we
2:16 should be able to figure it out we've got front usb that's a and front audio
2:20 that's a nice feature to have for a test bench actually the open bench tables
2:23 don't have it no they don't wow remote power button and reset switch
2:30 all the included tools and standoffs and
2:33 screws and everything not tools that wasn't this i misspoke uh okay we've got
2:39 some extruded aluminum uh somethings there's five of them
2:45 oh and wow that's it
2:52 this is pretty flimsy
2:57 okay so uh
3:01 that's not the world's finest looking piece of acrylic uh it's very flecked
3:06 and i can't fight this peeling anymore
3:12 i've forgotten what i started fighting
3:16 for see they can't copyright strike me if i'm way off key this is really the uh
3:22 the quintessential aliexpress experience here isn't it it's kind of like
3:26 aliexpress meets ikea so first up i've got uh the hard drive mounts over here
3:31 so evidently the hard drives go in between two of these
3:36 kind of something like i'm not sure what the orientation is
3:41 yeah it looks like they go like that how you doing um i opened this
3:47 upside down and now
3:51 really
3:54 hold it hold it up okay
3:59 damn it Anthony oh my god
4:02 the screws are labeled and you get they were numbered
4:07 oh this was going to be so easy
4:11 you screwed us so this is a spectacular example of
4:15 waste not want knot so we've got our our bench here and you can see
4:20 they actually cut out the hard drive holders
4:24 from the rest of the bench in a spot where the motherboard is gonna
4:28 sit on top of it anyway acrylic is actually a much more expensive than
4:31 you'd probably think does it make any sense to have the numbers on the top or
4:36 the bottom so like i look at this and i'm like oh okay i'll open it up but no it's like
4:40 this with this blank piece of whatever it is we'll let the audience be the
4:45 judge actually we shouldn't do that they always side against me i don't know what
4:50 it is no matter how junior or completely unlikable someone is they always side
4:55 with them against me when we leave it up to the audience okay
4:59 i'm gonna put another hard drive on here for lulls i want to load this thing up like we'll we'll deck it out we'll put
5:04 as much stuff on it as we can or two hard drives and an optical drive
5:08 whoa did you see that i opened it up correctly
5:14 it wasn't even hard oh wow i just
5:18 there's not really as many pieces on this whole thing as i had sort of
5:22 expected from looking at the like the diagram are we missing some
5:26 this is the light version this is a universal set of instructions
5:31 so there's a version that actually comes with uh up to a 240 millimeter radiator
5:36 mount as well as the pci express plane there but we got the most basic version
5:42 oh i think we did this is where the reputation comes from china it's not
5:47 that you're not capable of designing a tool path for this it's just that you
5:52 can't be arsed to just go double check this measurement
5:55 oh just put a slot you'll be fine how do you misalign your own thing
6:02 why is that a slit instead of a hole acrylic isn't one of
6:07 those things that dramatically expands or shrinks when you're laser cutting it
6:11 so that's pretty cool check that out so we just run these
6:15 cables over to our motherboard and boom we've got front i o on our test bench i
6:19 mean the thing about a test bench is that accessing the rear i o is usually
6:22 as simple as turning it around but still i wouldn't
6:27 say no to being able to reach it from both sides oh wait it sure does that's
6:31 weird no it does save for the buttons and that was five which you had these
6:35 super long ones in for and it doesn't say for the usb one that's not labeled
6:40 and for whatever reason this one uses a hole instead of a slot yeah like they
6:44 were they were confident on that one so this is actually a cool design for
6:48 the button though so it's anchored along the outside here and then there's just
6:52 these flexible pieces of acrylic that actuate the button
6:56 and that's actually got a pretty decent little click to it cool yeah
7:00 that's really neat oh right the holes are bigger you want to come see the big
7:04 hole while i put it in hey
7:09 this really is not anything special i've gotten some pretty amazing stuff on like
7:14 deal extreme for 30 bucks even though we paid 30 bucks on aliexpress this thing
7:18 can be had for 16 bucks on cowbell why did we pay 30 dollars for it on
7:23 aliexpress because i didn't know it was on tavo wasn't until i followed the
7:26 taobao link on that uh that their instruction sheet so we actually bought
7:34 rebranded chinese crap
7:37 from a rebranded chinese crap marketplace
7:40 we're several levels deep right now this is like soulja test bench if it goes
7:44 like any more levels deep that is not pretty
7:48 so interestingly they've actually removed
7:51 the most material for our drive mounts
7:54 from the area that has the least support from the feet
7:58 this this obviously isn't a thing
8:02 but then wait yeah yeah everything goes on the other
8:06 side really
8:09 okay well back to the drawing board like
8:12 we're not we're not missing something here are we i mean we might be but i
8:16 don't think so this too is a protective layer hey
8:24 so that's good it makes a little more sense now so we can go ahead and put some pci express
8:28 doodad jigs on here so these are actually very similar in their design to
8:33 our open bench table one just
8:36 cheaper and crappier now where does this go there's like these big
8:41 gaps between the standoffs and the top here
8:45 why okay and then do you know what screws that uses brilliant doesn't say here's
8:50 another bizarre one so there's that weird gap and then these holes are
8:54 hexagonal instead of round why
9:00 are they to distinguish them visually ah
9:05 okay hey something makes sense we learned a thing
9:09 so the hexagon ones are for the
9:13 uh the drive cage things and they can either be three and a half inch or five
9:17 and a quarter inch so here's the other two hex ones this one is barely even
9:21 in you can see there's a gap here and then there's another set one two three
9:26 here three and a half five and a quarter brilliant okay
9:30 now i'm just gonna fix that i put the drives in wrong uh
9:35 in fairness to it that's
9:38 more solid
9:45 all right um hold on i got okay i'll get these so put the standoffs where they go
9:50 and i'll screw them in from the bottom by the time we go through all this hassle though we could have done it
9:54 luke's way why would they put the legs right where the holes are okay at least
9:59 they got this aligned correctly
10:09 no see if i was learning i would have kicked it
10:14 hey that's a legitimate strategy to help
10:17 prevent damage i'm not kicking it i'm catching with my feet
10:24 look here i'll give you a demonstration
10:28 okay so if i were to accidentally drop this cooler if i'm
10:32 like oh see look how much of its momentum was arrested before it hit the
10:36 ground one more time
10:40 here it's fine i'll demonstrate for you again like oh no oh
10:47 so once your motherboard's on like this
10:51 then you get your power supply and honestly
10:56 this is so stupid so it just goes on like that oh
11:00 you guys are going to have a full appreciation for this once i tip it back
11:04 over
11:09 we have to take the board off
11:12 in order to mount the cooler because the hard drives go right under where the
11:17 CPU socket is and it doesn't even have a cutout anyway
11:25 yeah and it's not like it has these uh stock cooler it's a beefy stock cooler
11:30 we don't want this for uh like uh
11:33 who in the world would buy this wow
11:41 just like that sucka you like that i like these more
11:45 yeah those are awesome and this doesn't have them well it's about what you'd
11:49 expect from just a piece of acrylic it does get some more
11:53 structural rigidity from having the motherboard like mounted to it
11:58 but not as much as it as we'd want it to have
12:04 i mean is this it do we just fire it up at this point
12:07 i mean we can if you want to let's do it we need to plug in the front panel there
12:11 we go let's see if the reset reset switch
12:15 works um
12:20 it does technically have a power led in there
12:23 so there you have it this is the geek studio
12:29 16 test bench as long as you can get it off taobao 30 bucks off aliexpress
12:35 it ain't great and this video is brought to you by our

13:23 no no it's fine it was just the acrylic hard drive holders
13:26 oh hit that like button get subscribed or maybe consider checking out where to buy
13:31 the stuff we featured at the link in the video description i mean to be clear
13:34 like at 16
13:38 compared to 200 like yeah it's not got the
13:42 you know the rigidity but uh i mean you could buy a bunch of these for that
