0:00 on paper the dell xps 13 2018 has the
0:03 best screen the highest performance and
0:07 the best built chassis out of all the thin and light laptops on the market
0:12 but just because you know someone has the
0:17 right ingredients doesn't necessarily mean that they'll
0:20 put them together correctly
0:25 so then is the xps 13 a delicious cake
0:31 well there's only one way to find out
0:43 that's not bad oh oh
0:47 oh there's some eggshell
0:58 this video is brought to you by spectrum glasses spectrum glasses are an
1:02 affordable long-term solution that helps your eyes manage high energy blue light
1:05 emitted from computer screens use offer code Linus through the link below and
1:09 save 10 today now the dell xps 13 9370 2018
1:16 straddles the line between playful and professional it has just a touch of
1:22 flash especially our subjectively flipping awesome rose gold version but
1:28 manages it without looking or feeling tacky at all
1:32 the white keyboard area accented by carbon fiber is one of if not the
1:38 stiffest to ever come through our Labs and apparently it is extremely resistant
1:43 to stains with dell going as far as to say that if
1:50 you draw on it in permanent marker it'll
1:53 just wipe right off now this was a dry erase but
1:59 you know hopefully we'll do a b-roll shot or something to show it with a permanent marker
2:04 now for thin and light the xps 13 is a
2:07 little bit on the thick side but that hasn't stopped dell from giving up on
2:11 usb type a ports for some reason to their credit though they have
2:16 included three usb type cs two of which are Thunderbolt 3 external
2:21 GPU lovers rejoice and also a headphone port and a micro sd card reader so
2:27 for the next year or two you might be regularly reaching for the included a to
2:32 c dongle but native type c devices are becoming more
2:36 and more common all the time
2:40 now let's address the video title Intel allows partners to configure the
2:44 TDP a measure of power consumption of
2:48 their 8th gen core i7 mobile processors
2:51 and dell has gone full throttle on this one allowing it to draw
2:57 up to 27 watts and reach up to 4
3:00 gigahertz turbo speeds which makes this device feel really snappy over short
3:05 bursts but when we see manufacturers push
3:10 performance to the limit in compact systems we often encounter thermal
3:14 throttling so how about the xps 13.
3:18 well turns out they've actually done a great job here
3:21 under full load it can't quite keep cool
3:26 at first briefly throttling in an attempt to stay
3:29 quiet during short sprints but then when
3:33 the system realizes that big things are happening like a long video export for
3:38 example the fans kick in to bring everything under control and the real
3:42 world results are impressive our xps 13 with a CPU that costs over a
3:48 hundred dollars less matched or beat the competing lenovo
3:53 thinkpad x1 carbon and absolutely ran circles around any notebook with a 7th
3:59 gen u series processor but
4:02 a powerful engine is only as good as the rubber that meets the road or the
4:07 photons that hit the eyeballs in this case
4:10 and our model actually looks really good here too it sports a 4k 13.3 inch touch
4:17 display with HDR support it's exceptionally bright the colors are
4:22 amazing and you can basically have your nose
4:25 even if yours is smaller than mine touching the screen and still not see an
4:30 individual pixel there's just
4:34 one small problem it's a 400
4:38 optional upgrade adding insult to injury there are only
4:43 two screen options and the 1080 one
4:46 isn't available with touch i mean we get that
4:49 bigger numbers sell better but realistically you don't actually need 4k
4:54 on a screen this small so we want to see a 1080 touch option for a more modest
5:00 increase in price that might make us feel better about the
5:04 slightly undersized trackpad this thing is just okay the surface coating feels
5:11 good but i found myself wishing that it was a little bit taller just like my
5:16 wife and having trouble with accuracy even
5:19 after playing around with pointer acceleration settings
5:22 maybe one solution would be to break the mold and experiment with a slightly
5:26 taller aspect ratio on the screen like microsoft has been doing that would also
5:31 give them an easy fix for the improved but
5:34 if we're being honest still pretty horrible webcam placement
5:39 i mean i know that not everyone uses the webcam on their laptop a lot but
5:44 i do and i'm pretty sure that the people i
5:47 call don't want to look up my gargantuan
5:50 snout the whole time that they are talking to me it even interferes
5:54 sometimes with Windows hello facial recognition which made the inclusion of
5:58 a fingerprint sensor and the power button actually that much more awesome
6:02 this is sick which means i guess we're back to good stuff
6:06 let's talk about the keyboard it
6:09 is really good alex prefers the longer travel of the x1
6:15 carbon but for me the soft
6:18 quiet keystrokes managed somehow to not feel mushy and the short travel allowed
6:23 me to get up to nearly my full desktop mechanical keyboard speed in a matter of
6:28 minutes and the speakers are great too especially for a laptop this size with a
6:33 nice clean sound that makes them well suited for something like tossing on
6:37 some tunes while you're playing cards with your friends
6:40 and you can even have a pretty long game too since this 7 hour result in our
6:44 battery life test is based on a continuous load you should get through a
6:48 workday pretty comfortably without the charger
6:51 now let's be clear here there were some negatives in this video but none of them
6:56 are anywhere near deal breakers and with the first reasonable config starting at
7:00 1200 the xps 13's price
7:04 is pretty good
7:07 with some caveats a similarly spec'd lg gram includes a
7:11 touchscreen has better battery life and is much lighter but it falls behind on
7:17 performance build quality and Thunderbolt 3 for the 13 inch version so
7:23 if you're into easy docking or future expansion for your notebook
7:27 that's a big deal so overall we're giving two
7:30 recommendations here one for potential buyers if you're willing to pay to play
7:35 the xps 13 is a well-built high performance and compact machine
7:40 and then we also have one for dell fix the screen options there needs to be
7:45 a cheaper touch screen for you guys to be competitive on the low end and then
7:49 while you're at it deal with that webcam placement eggshell in this otherwise
7:54 truly delicious electronic cake
8:03 that's actually really good cake
8:06 you know this is really good the thermaltake p90
8:10 it's an open frame tempered glass mid tower case that's split up into three
8:13 compartments for your graphics card power supply and other cooling
8:16 components it's got five millimeter thick tempered glass side panels that
8:19 let you put your system on display it's got three different layouts that make it
8:23 wall mountable horizontal lying or vertical standing
8:27 and it features seven drive bays check it out today at the link in the video
