0:00 so we're on aliexpress looking for bizarre components for an upcoming
0:03 project and we stumble across a series of really cheap ssds from a company
0:09 called king spec which kind of sounds like a knockoff of
0:13 kingston and this raised a couple of questions
0:16 for us one how can they be cheaper than
0:21 massive multinationals like samsung or
0:25 micron who enjoy the industry's best economies of scale
0:29 how would something like this perform and perhaps most importantly should
0:34 anyone trust what is probably the most
0:37 valuable aspect of their computer their data to a relatively
0:42 unknown player oh oh and one more question have you
0:47 ever heard of our sponsor glasswire glasswire lets you see your current and
0:51 past network activity detect malware and block badly behaving apps on your pc or
0:56 Android device use offer code Linus to get 25 off at the link below
1:10 first things first the on paper specifications
1:14 which getting our hands on was actually not as
1:18 easy as you might think so the official page lists
1:22 neither the controller so that's effectively the brain of an SSD that
1:27 controls how data is managed on the nand flash nor the exact type of nand flash
1:33 that was used by this drive furthermore when we cross referenced
1:37 whatever data was out there in the wild often on third party sites we actually
1:42 found a ton of conflicting information
1:46 everything from different nand types mlc
1:49 versus tlc to wildly swinging sequential read and
1:54 write ranges in some cases we actually found conflicting information within the
1:58 same page now we were able to determine at least that the controller on our
2:03 particular unit was probably a d dramless model from maxiotec which is j
2:10 micron's SSD division that was spun off
2:13 into a separate entity and that it's probably an mk8115
2:19 but we decided to leave confirming it until
2:23 all the testing was complete just in case our autopsy found that the
2:28 patient was deceased due to the autopsy
2:33 okay so for those of us who are not quite up to speed on what makes an SSD
2:38 tick aside from the like you plug it
2:41 in and it makes the loading look faster
2:44 and why being d roundless is important here is a quick primer
2:49 when your operating system sends a write request to an SSD it actually assumes
2:55 even though it's 2018 that it is talking to a hard drive and sends data in
3:00 logical block address or lba form now
3:04 ssds they don't do lba instead storing data
3:09 in blocks which each contain four kilobyte pages
3:14 so that's where the flash translation layer
3:17 inside the SSD comes in it converts lba requests into actual
3:23 block and page addresses acting as sort of a table of contents
3:28 what's more each nand cell has a finite
3:31 number of times that it can be overwritten so there needs to be logic
3:35 inside the SSD that takes care to spread
3:39 out the wear evenly this is a process known as wear leveling
3:43 further complicating this process though an individual page cannot be erased from
3:49 a block so to remove part of the data
3:52 from one block the whole block has to be moved over to a second one
3:57 minus the pages containing parts of the file that are marked for deletion once
4:01 that's done the first block can be marked as safe to overwrite now this
4:06 consolidation or moving around is known as garbage collection and ssds have at
4:11 least seven percent of their true capacity hidden sometimes more in order
4:16 to help shuffle data around this is otherwise known as over provisioning
4:21 now as you can imagine as an SSD gets more filled up with data this garbage
4:26 collection process gets more difficult because the fewer spare blocks you have
4:32 the harder it is to organize the ones that remain
4:35 especially during heavy use when it has
4:38 to perform this shuffling on the fly
4:42 this is where not having a dram cash can hurt
4:46 you remember that table of contents we talked about
4:50 ideally that gets stored on the cash
4:53 so then without a fast way to look up
4:57 where what goes writing data to a d roundless
5:01 SSD ends up being kind of like going to the mall without a directory
5:04 then imagine you're in a hurry like you're doing random writes of small
5:09 files all over the drive which actually happens a lot during regular usage
5:13 or or does it so let's look at some performance here
5:18 oh oh lordy oh oh wow oh oh the humanity
5:24 sorry okay enough of that let's actually look a little closer at those numbers
5:28 in sequential reads and writes from a clean state everything here actually
5:32 looks fine but the same can be said of an sd card
5:36 and when we ran Windows on one of those recently the results were
5:41 well less than ideal but where our king's back SSD falls flat
5:45 on its face is where small size transfers come in so we're talking being
5:50 beat by an order of two and a half times in some cases and then embarrassingly
5:55 enough this model we're comparing it to right here is also a cashless model this
6:01 time from Corsair so it seems to be a mix of the who knows what nand and the
6:07 cheap ass controller along with an unexceptional firmware and that is with
6:12 the drives empty and trimmed this situation can only get worse as the
6:17 drive fills up game level load times could be seen as a
6:22 redeeming quality those are fine
6:25 but honestly by this stage of our testing they just aren't enough for king
6:30 spec to be getting any kind of recommendation for this drive especially
6:34 given the mixed amazon reviews that are either basically yay works great or
6:39 died quickly no response from the rma team with someone even going as far as
6:44 to set up a complaints page about
6:47 kingspec the final nail in the coffin is the
6:51 price so our no name SSD is cheap sure
6:55 at the time we ordered it it was the cheapest 512 gig that we could find
7:00 but cheap is not the same thing as good
7:04 value so given that something like a samsung 860 evo can be had for
7:10 complete with five year warranty by the way about ten dollars more then i guess
7:15 the conclusion is this i recommend the kingsback p3512
7:21 i strongly recommend it as a gift
7:25 for someone you don't like
7:29 speaking of things i recommend as a gift although in this case for someone you really like
7:33 mass drops sennheiser hd 6xx headphones
7:37 this is one of massdrop's all-time best sellers and why
7:42 wouldn't it be over 40 000 of their members have picked these things up to
7:46 date and people continue to want them it uses the legendary hd 650 drivers as a
7:51 base to deliver a balanced mid-range and natural sounding base it's got a
7:55 detachable six foot cable instead of the 10-foot cable on the original this is
7:59 based on the community's feedback and it comes with support from sennheiser so
8:04 check out the link below to join the drop today
8:07 so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this video you can hit that
8:12 button but if you liked it hit like get subscribed maybe consider checking out
