0:00 The market share for ultrawide monitors is uh you guessed it getting wider. And
0:06 in fact, 20% of the displays bought by
0:10 our audience members this year have been
0:13 ultrawides. But what if I told you that
0:17 you could get many of the benefits of an ultrawide without abandoning the 16x9
0:23 aspect ratio that you've grown to love?
0:27 Introducing the ultra wide and super
0:30 tall BDM 4037U ultra HD curved monitor
0:35 from Phillips. Hold on to your mind, kids, cuz it's about to get exploded cuz
0:42 this thing is 40 in diagonally.
0:59 Cyby Power's lineup of gaming desktops feature Intel 7th generation Core i7
1:04 processors. Check them out on Amazon at the link below. So 40 in is nothing for
1:10 a TV these days. But when it's sitting
1:13 right in your face on a desk, it's a
1:16 different story altogether. Seriously, no one can walk by this thing without
1:22 making a comment about how it's so big.
1:26 Something that I'm totally used to, by the way. But seriously, the slim bezel,
1:33 the 3000R curve, and the sheer size of
1:37 the Philips BDM 4037U make for an utterly immersive
1:42 experience that's unlike anything I've used before. And this is especially true
1:47 if you tilt it down towards yourself a little, which may in fact be necessary
1:53 since the height can't be adjusted out
1:56 of the box. Though, there are some things I like about the stand. It
2:01 somehow does a surprisingly solid job of mitigating screen wobble given the 25
2:08 12B weight of this behemoth. And I love the minimalistic and compact look. The
2:14 stand has a tendency to loosen, causing unwanted rotation that can drive you
2:19 absolutely bonkers. I expect a little more from the stand that's holding up a
2:24 $1,000 monitor. Overall, I'd describe
2:27 the BDM 4037U. I'm going to start calling it Phil, as streamlined. It has
2:34 no buttons or IO at all on the front or
2:39 sides. And in fact, if I wasn't uh
2:42 pretty good at the old reacharound, I probably still wouldn't know how to turn
2:46 it on and off at all. This is a classic case of business in the front, party in
2:52 the back. We've got one HDMI 2.0 port
2:56 and another HDMI 1.4, both with MHL in
2:59 case you wanted to mirror your phone or tablet display, and two DisplayPort
3:04 1.2A ports. Moving uh back in time,
3:08 we've got a VGA port followed by audio
3:11 in and headphone out. Good thing too on that second one because the onboard
3:15 speakers sound like a cell phone at the bottom of a
3:19 well. And then moving right along, we have a generous four type A USB 3 5 GB
3:24 ports, which is not bad, though in 2017 I'd like to see one of these traded in
3:29 for a type-C. And finally, another legacy port for separate sync or sync on
3:35 green and an input for the 5-ft power
3:38 cord that was too short for my setup. But I ain't even mad cuz there's no
3:42 external power brick. And all of these cords came in the box. Picture quality
3:48 should impress most consumers and even earn a close but no cigar from design
3:54 professionals. It's a VA or vertical alignment, 10-bit LCD panel boasting
4:00 wide 170° viewing angles, and a brightness of 300 nits max. Out of the
4:06 box, it covers 99.98% of the sRGB color space with
4:11 delta E values just under three and a gamma of 2.29 with an extra credit
4:18 loving pat on the behind for covering over 83% of the Adobe RGB color space.
4:24 The already good contrast was made
4:27 4xish during our tests by their smart contrast feature, which uses brightness
4:32 adjustments to make the contrast ratio a little wider. So, with some calibration,
4:37 this puppy can actually get you a long way. And it's got some cool features,
4:42 too, like picturein picture and multiv- view, which allows you to use all those
4:48 outputs, putting up to four 1080p
4:51 systems on one screen. It's great for control rooms, trade shows, or like
4:56 those cool stock market desks that you see in the movies. So, at 40 in, Phil is
5:04 as wide as the ultra wide in my office, but with an extra 4 in in height, not to
5:12 mention 40% off the price. This means we
5:17 give up some gaming prowess. So, no 75
5:20 Hz refresh or free sync and slower pixel
5:24 response times, but we keep the
5:28 productivity benefits and immersiveness of a curved ultrawide and the tried
5:33 andrue 16x9 aspect ratio. And while
5:37 watching 21x9 movies or playing games on
5:41 an ultrawide is about as close as you can get to a cinema-like experience, I
5:47 suspect a lot of folks would prefer
5:50 letter boxing their movie content to
5:53 pillar boxing their everything else
5:56 content, especially given Phil's excellent black depth. And when it comes
6:01 to gaming for the titles with proper
6:04 horizontal plus support, you can manually set an ultrawide resolution and
6:09 then just run native 4K for everything
6:12 else. And I guess that's the bottom line, versatility. You can watch movies,
6:17 you can do some photo editing, you can use it like an ultra wide. I mean, hell,
6:22 you can even use it as a small TV. I'd
6:25 personally add an ARM for height adjust,
6:28 but other than that, damn, I'm really
6:32 starting to like this thing. Tunnel Bear takes the uh the bear crap out of
