0:00 this is the MSI gs65
0:04 g for discrete gaming graphics
0:08 s for thin light and stealthy
0:12 six for 15.6 inches the screen size and 5
0:18 because this is the brand new fifth generation chassis design which
0:23 wait hold on a second the last model i saw was a gs 63 so did they just skip
0:30 gen four solely because four is considered unlucky in some parts of asia
0:35 or is it just that much better honestly
0:39 this could go either way because in my hands right now is the most important
0:45 letter thank you
0:48 h this is the first laptop we've seen with
0:51 a six core Intel core i7 h-series mobile
0:56 gaming CPU oh crap i meant to take the letter off
1:03 and this video is brought to you by the LTT Store check out our design by
1:09 humans merch store at the link in the video description we've got shirts mugs
1:12 stickers hats and more
1:23 the first thing that stands out about the gs65 is how much more premium it
1:28 looks than its predecessor the industrial design has been simplified
1:33 the grain finish has been replaced with a cleaner blasted finish and the red
1:38 pinstriping has been swapped out for a more mature gold
1:43 but the chassis redesign is more than cosmetic even though its screen is
1:48 larger than high performance compact competitors like the razer blade and
1:52 macbook pro it has a surprisingly
1:56 similar footprint so how did they pull this off
2:00 well first they dramatically shrunk the bezels the sides are a mere four
2:05 millimeters now with the top bezel only about half the size and the webcam
2:10 while it's the same very unexceptional 720p affair from over
2:15 a year ago to its credit it's still positioned above the screen in its
2:20 optimal location so it doesn't look up your nose and it's also got this nifty
2:25 diffty little hardware button down here that if you press actually disables it
2:30 outright on a hardware level so all of
2:34 this adds up to a screen to body ratio of 82
2:39 a stat made only a little bit less impressive by the obvious way that they
2:43 padded it by enlarging this gap back here that you won't be able to unsee
2:49 the next thing they did was to remove the number pad which is sure to enrage
2:54 some while simultaneously bringing jubilation to those who hate having
2:58 their hands off center while they're trying to type none pattern no though
3:02 the new steel series keyboard is definitely an improvement the switches
3:06 are less mushy the keycaps are a lot wider and the legend is now transparent
3:11 to let the now individually controllable RGB backlights shine through and another
3:17 shining point for the gs is its io the
3:20 ports themselves haven't actually changed that much from last gen but
3:25 every usb port runs at 10 gigabit spec now and with HDMI 2.0 Thunderbolt 3 and
3:32 mini displayport you can plug in up to three
3:36 4k 60hz external displays at once and i
3:40 mean pretty much whatever else you could want even the carryability is better
3:43 than last time the notebook itself does
3:47 weigh about the same but the power brick which you do have to take with you so it
3:52 matters is definitely smaller and lighter the display itself is a 15.6
3:58 inch 1080p ips panel that's calibrated on the box with 95 coverage of the srgb
4:04 color gamut so nothing really stands out here but it managed surprisingly decent
4:09 delta e values meaning that colors are true to life and you could definitely
4:14 use this machine for some casual photo editing or graphic design which is great
4:19 but what really matters for the uh
4:23 capital g gamers out there is it's
4:26 144 hertz refresh rate the gaming
4:30 experience on the gs65 is simply put
4:34 awesome it's compact but this thing is armed to the teeth for the latest titles
4:39 thanks to its gtx 1070 max q and 8th gen
4:43 core i7 8750h processor the first one of
4:47 Intel's shiny new premium mobile cpus that we've seen in the wild clocked
4:51 between 2.2 and 4.1 gigahertz boost and
4:56 it's only set to get better a little bird told me that unofficial g-sync
5:01 support might turn up later the hardware's in there it's just a matter
5:05 of whether or not it gets the certification and even in professional
5:09 workstation tasks like rendering the gs65 performed as well as much bigger
5:15 not to mention pricier laptops from last gen but
5:19 many a high performance notebook around here has been brought to its knees by
5:24 our usability tests the gs65's battery life well that's
5:30 pretty okay for a gaming notebook though considering it's hybrid graphics i might
5:35 have asked for more here and while its three fan four heat pipe cooling design
5:40 does look set to handle gaming loads pretty much effortlessly under extreme
5:45 CPU loads like what you might see rendering out a video we saw significant
5:50 thermal throttling with our CPU cores reaching as high as 90 degrees after 30
5:54 minutes so other than that though sounds pretty good time to buy right
5:59 well maybe but with competing coffee lake h-series machines like the dell xps
6:04 9570 and Gigabyte arrow 15x do for
6:07 launch any moment now you might want to hold off at least a couple weeks to see
6:12 if those ones are a little bit less fingerprint prone and flexible like
6:18 i do get that MSI needed to keep the weight down but
6:22 a little more reinforcement like maybe behind the power button here probably
6:27 wouldn't have been a backbreaker with all of that said there's no denying that
6:31 the gs65 is an all-around
6:35 solid performer that hits the sweet spot between performance and sides i mean
6:40 it really wasn't that long ago that normal
6:44 non-g laptops used to be this size
6:48 plus it's got insane i o and all of that
6:51 at a price point that is barely above what last gen is selling for so you know
6:56 what high four MSI i mean i mean five
7:03 five five
