0:00 - This right here is the Acer Porsche Design Book RS.
0:03 And if you haven't heard of Porsche Design, they're like a subsidiary sort of
0:09 like spin-off company of Porsche. And they sort of do things like sell $7,000 watches
0:15 or one of the things that they did was, in Orlando, they made a high-rise where you could
0:21 park your car like in the elevator and it takes you and your car up to your apartment.
0:26 Anyway, it's ridiculous, rich people's stuff. Just stupid stuff that I never want to do.
0:30 But, we can look at this laptop.
0:33 It's you know, it's not as much as their watches, it comes at $1,400.
0:40 So, maybe it's actually not that bad.
0:44 Let's get into it. Oh, this isn't it.
0:49 This right here is the optional accessories for the Porsche Design Book RS.
0:55 And it's a $330 option for what you get,
1:00 a mouse, we get this.
1:07 Yeah, I don't know what this is for. It feels good.
1:10 I'm guessing it's so that you can chuck your mouse and whatever else you want in there.
1:15 And then, down here we get the carrying case.
1:19 Hey, Andy. - [Andy] Yeah? - Would you spend $330 to get this leather-folio thing?
1:29 This computer cover and... - [Andy] The mouse?
1:32 - A kind of bad feeling mouse?
1:36 - [Andy] I'll save up to get a real Porsche. - I was honestly hoping that this thing
1:39 would be like made out of aluminum or something, given how freaking expensive it is,
1:43 - [Jono] Is it plastic? - Yeah, it's just plastic. - [Jono] What?
1:46 - Like listen to this. It's just like, it's...
1:51 You can tell when something, you know, when you drop it, it sounds like a (mumbles),
1:55 instead of like a (mumbles). Yeah, I haven't used this mouse yet,
2:00 but I think it's pretty safe to say, the accessory bag is not worth what you're paying for it.
2:06 This right here, it looks like it's a Bluetooth mouse, so I imagine the tracking and,
2:12 oh, this just feels bad. I don't know who thought that this edge right here
2:19 would be comfortable on your hand but it's not.
2:28 Okay.
2:32 Oh, you got another little card.
2:36 - [Jono] Haha, in case it gets lost.
2:39 - And, Porsche Design. I'm gonna keep on going.
2:42 I wanna see what else is in the box. This is a lot of box for a little laptop already being out.
2:47 - [Jono] Well you paid for it? - Yeah, you're definitely paying for the box here.
2:52 65W charger of a Type C, that's pretty good.
2:57 And then over here we get, International Travelers Warranty passport.
3:03 What? What's in here. What?
3:06 (soft music)
3:10 Okay, I'm confused. - [Jono] Are there two chargers?
3:14 - So we also have a 65W barrel charger for some reason.
3:19 Okay, well that's it. A lot of companies have been you know,
3:22 moving towards much more biodegradable
3:26 and generally earth-friendly packaging.
3:29 I think it's pretty safe to say that given pretty much all of this is just foam
3:33 that smells like it came straight from the refinery.
3:38 This right here, is not great for the environment.
3:41 Whoa. (soft music)
3:50 Interesting. Okay, wow. It's 2.65 pounds and it actually feels really light.
3:56 Definitely just chuck this in your backpack. I'm surprised how light it feels actually.
4:00 Okay, so I just looked it up and it turns out this actually is a real carbon fiber panel on the back here,
4:05 so it's a 3K carbon fiber. The whole like chassis is made out of 60, 65 aluminum,
4:14 and then it has a micro-arc finish which apparently gives it a ceramic-like coating.
4:19 It's kind of similar to (mumbles), like in feel.
4:22 Apparently it has really great scratch resistance. It also has a gorilla glass screen.
4:27 So, you know, it should last quite a long time and look pretty good.
4:30 Well, subjectively, I don't know.
4:33 What are your thoughts on how it looks so far, Jono? - [Jono] Not bad, it looks light.
4:39 - It feels light. It is actually really light. I don't know, for me personally,
4:42 it's kinda trying too hard. It's got those real like, almost (mumbles) vibes,
4:48 instead of like you know... - [Jono] Change your hood, bro.
4:52 - Like you know, like real Porsche, they would just do like more subtle things
4:56 instead of just being like, ah, carbon fiber, we put a sheet on the back, good for us.
5:00 We lost the plot here (mumbles). So, you get a full sized HDMI,
5:06 type A and Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 4 actually, on the side.
5:10 You also have barrel charging, which you're just gonna throw in the garbage
5:14 'cause why the heck? Why? I'm still so confused, but anyway.
5:17 And then on the other side you get headphone combo and another Type A.
5:21 So, given its size and weight, that's actually pretty good.
5:25 Oh, yeah, those can go. - [Jono] That's weird.
5:28 - It is weird, I just don't get it. - [Andy] Put one at home, the other one in your leather pouch.
5:34 - I guess that's probably what this is for. - [Jono] $300 babeyyyy.
5:38 - Yeah, that's $330 well spent right there.
5:41 Actually, this one fits better, so maybe you'd take it.
5:48 Yeah, bang it, it attaches there, sort of.
5:52 Okay, so is the laptop actually good?
5:55 We'll find out, oh, one finger lift.
5:59 Is it gonna (mumbles), come on, no.
6:05 - [Jono] Gotta warm it up. - Two finger lift.
6:09 Not really, one second. I like this mouse pad but we can't stiffness test on it.
6:16 Okay, okay, our table is not flat. I thought that something was wrong with
6:20 the laptop for a second there. So, we get this vajazzled fingerprint reader
6:27 and a pretty small touch pad. It's a bit wonk.
6:32 Do other touch pads do that? Nope, this one doesn't.
6:35 The chassis overall though, is very stiff. You can definitely tell that the whole thing
6:39 is made out of aluminum. Screen, same thing, like the feel of the laptop is great.
6:45 Oh, and it is it's Evo certified which just made it haste things like,
6:49 I think fast charging, you need to be able to get like 15 hours of battery life or something,
6:54 super good standby and it needs to be able to turn on
6:58 in like a second or something like that. I guess it's time to get into it.
7:02 Who's our sponsor, Jono? - [Jono] Govee. - Govee.
7:05 Govee offers high quality smart lights for any room or Christmas tree in your home.
7:08 They're currently having a Black Friday promotion with up to 35% off the lights,
7:12 as well as a cyber Monday sale with their prices as low as $6.99.
7:17 The sale includes RGBIC light strips that allows for this cool chasing color effect.
7:22 Normal RGB LED lights with Alexa and Google Assistant support,
7:25 and a TV backlight that allows for different scenes. Head to the link in the description
7:29 and check out Govee's Black Friday sale today. (soft upbeat music)
7:39 - [Jono] That's pretty good. - Okay, I guess the first thing
7:43 that I noticed here, is this touch? Okay, so it's a touch screen,
7:46 it's a 1080P touch screen, that's 16 by 9.
7:51 In this price range, you could also be looking at like the XPS 13 which has the 16 by 10 display,
7:58 and I guess it also has a carbon fiber wrist rest if you like that and it kinda just
8:05 looks more premium (laughs). So it's a 14 inch display with a maximum brightness
8:10 of 340 nits, which is underwhelming.
8:15 What do we have for power? (mumbles) I think there's only one config,
8:19 but there might be a couple. But the one that we have though is the $1,400 model,
8:25 which gets you... How much RAM do you think it does have, Jono? - [Jono] 16?
8:29 - It has 8 gigabytes of RAM. - [Jono] What? - With an i5-1135G7,
8:36 and a 512 Gigabyte hard drive.
8:40 So, it's not fast. - [Jono] The graphics card?
8:44 - Well, there's no graphics card Jono.
8:48 It's got the Iris Xe graphics which in fairness are actually pretty good for something of this size.
8:52 But, you're not games on this (laughs).
8:56 Well, one thing that is good about the i5 though,
9:00 is that we have a 56 watt hour battery in here,
9:03 and I imagine you actually do get like all workday
9:07 plus a fair bit battery life with that.
9:10 Then again, that's basically the same size battery as what you get in an XPS 13, you know, an HP Spectre.
9:19 You're not getting a lot of laptop for $1,400 here.
9:23 - [Jono] You get a Porsche laptop. - You getting carbon fiber on the back (laughs).
9:29 Oh, one thing that you do get, it does that thing where it slightly angles up,
9:38 when you open it. That allows for more air to get in the bottom, so it runs cooler and it also kinda like
9:43 tilts it just a tiny bit, which is nice for typing. So, let's see how the keyboard actually feels.
9:48 (keyboard clicking)
9:52 This keyboard feels like fine,
9:56 but it kind of gets to the whole problem
9:59 that I have with this laptop. This doesn't feel like a keyboard
10:02 that belongs on a $1,400 laptop.
10:07 So, let's see the other laptop that's Acer, you know,
10:10 unveiled at the same time as this one is the Spin 3 which has a 16 by 10 display,
10:16 and starts at 850 bucks. There's also have the Spin 5,
10:21 which is $1,000 and has a 3 by 2 display,
10:25 the Swift 3X has 17½ hours
10:29 of battery life and is $900. So, I think it's safe to say that
10:34 any of those options are much better than this,
10:39 as you get a better and bigger screen.
10:42 You get basically the same computer,
10:45 but you're spending less money so that you don't have carbon fiber on the back.
10:53 I don't know who this laptop's for. Actually, I'm gonna look it up.
10:56 I remember seeing a slide about it. Okay, target audience.
10:59 So first of all (laughs), those guys.
11:09 The Porsche Design Acer Book RS, is designed for trend-conscious mobile professionals,
11:15 looking for convenience and style while they work. The new notebook will appeal to their solid sense of style
11:20 and desire for a super lightweight laptop, that provides spectacular visuals and effortless computing.
11:26 For fancy people, fancy people with heaps of cash.
11:29 You can see the whole deck just kind of flexes,
11:33 I guess not a lot, and the switches actually are quite good.
11:37 But it's the sort of thing that you just don't see
11:42 on laptops that are this expensive with an i5.
11:45 And same with like this track pads, just,
11:50 it's just not quite there. It just doesn't quite offer like, you know, that premium experience that you would expect
11:56 from Porsche, I guess. And so, we do have a fingerprint reader,
12:02 but it does not have Windows Hello facial recognition, which is a bit of a bummer.
12:06 Is it even a laptop review on ShortCircuit, if you don't like (mumbles).
12:11 Who wants to bet money that this will be underwhelming?
12:15 The clarity is actually not bad,
12:19 and there's no balls (laughs). (upbeat music)
12:24 I would say that this is like perfectly acceptable for like conference calls, that sort of stuff.
12:29 You'll be able to hear the other people just fine. It is in fairness to them, a very clear sound.
12:35 (upbeat music) This is the Porsche Design,
12:42 and that's the XPS 15. So, in fairness to Acer, this is a 15 inch laptop,
12:47 but also in fairness to Acer not being that great,
12:52 you know, the MacBook Air is still the same or better than the XPS 15.
12:57 So, it is possible to have amazing sound in something of this size.
13:01 - [Jono] And at that price too. - Yeah, and at this price too (laughs).
13:05 MacBook Air is cheaper than this thing, and it's better in basically every way.
13:11 Oh, let's open it up, let's do that. I like opening laptops.
13:18 Wow, that's a really small motherboard. Look at this, it's only this big,
13:23 it's just a little guy,
13:26 and you're definitely not upgrading the RAM in this thing,
13:30 which you kind of do expect in a laptop like this but it's pretty unfortunate
13:34 that like eight gigs is your option. You can replace the SSD though, so that's nice.
13:40 Oh, this big old 56 watt hour battery and you know, just a nice little pretty
13:45 standard cooling system, but I imagine it's gonna be more than fine.
13:48 We've got two heat pipes that lead over to here. Heaps of space to intake air,
13:52 kind of quite a bit of wasted space here and here
13:55 and kind of around here (laughs).
13:59 So I guess my thoughts on this laptop,
14:03 they probably made this laptop so people like me would review it,
14:07 and then tell you to wait around for next thing
14:11 that you should actually do, like get a Swift 3 or a Swift 5,
14:16 or a Spin 3 or a Spin 5. Those actually look really good.
14:20 I'm excited for those. So good job, Acer.
14:25 You have laptops that I'm excited about, and I was really excited about this one
14:29 'cause I thought it would be stupid and it really was (laughs).
14:33 So yeah, if you wanna see more laptops from Acer that are actually sensible,
14:38 get subscribed, hit like and I don't know, just have a fantastical day.
14:42 See you later.
