0:00 it seems like we were only just getting used to HDMI 2.0 as the new normal with
0:06 its support for 4k resolution at 60
0:09 hertz making it a viable option for gamers and enthusiasts but there's
0:13 already something much more impressive on the horizon the recently announced
0:18 HDMI 2.1
0:21 of course going from 2.0 to 2.1 might
0:25 not sound like a huge leap for mankind
0:28 think about how unexciting the transition from Windows 8 to 8.1 was
0:34 but this new revision of HDMI actually has
0:37 massively enhanced uh capabilities
0:42 first up let's talk resolution 4k 5k and
0:46 even 8k are child's play for the new HDMI 2.1
0:51 which supports content at up to 10
0:54 k and although the HDMI forum hasn't yet
0:58 said if 10k means the typical
1:01 16x9 aspect ratio with about 10 000
1:04 pixels across or something more widescreen and cinematic
1:09 it definitely far outstrips the 4k
1:12 resolution of older hdmis
1:16 perhaps even more impressively though HDMI 2.1 can handle these absurd
1:21 resolutions at equally absurd frame
1:24 rates we're talking 120 hertz at 10
1:29 k which makes even the ak 60 hertz
1:33 capabilities of the latest displayport revision 1.4 look positively pedestrian
1:40 and although you would need a seriously incredible video card in your computer
1:45 to push that many pixels in a game you can still perhaps look forward to ultra
1:51 smooth movies and videos on youtube at
1:55 staggering resolutions and on the subject of gaming HDMI 2.1
2:00 will support its own variable refresh rate technology simply called
2:05 game mode vrr this allows a source device like a pc or
2:10 a game console and a connected display to synchronize their refresh rates and
2:16 thus avoid pesky screen tearing similar
2:19 to NVIDIA's g-sync and AMD's freesync which you can learn more about here
2:24 hopefully this will finally make adaptive refresh much more accessible
2:29 than the fragmented bundle of ecosystems
2:32 that we have now and that's not all it can do to make
2:36 your content look more real than ever before
2:39 like HDMI 2.0 2.1 supports HDR or high
2:44 dynamic range which expands black and white levels as well as color ranges
2:50 especially in bright and dark scenes you can learn more about HDR here but HDMI
2:56 2.1 takes the concept a step further
2:59 with dynamic metadata this allows the exact range of luminance
3:05 to be varied on a per-frame basis and
3:09 although the existing dolby vision HDR standard also supports dynamic metadata
3:15 it's a proprietary standard whereas the hdr10 standard is open meaning more
3:22 devices at lower prices
3:25 and of course HDMI carries audio along
3:28 with your video so there are improvements for your ears as well we'll
3:32 be getting a feature called enhanced audio return channel enabling
3:38 object-based audio schemes like dolby
3:41 atmos and dts x meaning each sound in the movie or show
3:46 that you're watching is encoded as its own specific object
3:51 instead of just having a limited number of discrete channels making positional
3:56 audio more realistic whether you have four speakers in your setup or 24
4:02 but all of this new stuff means HDMI 2.1 needs a larger pipe with
4:09 higher bandwidth 48 gigabits per second
4:14 to be exact which is over twice as much
4:17 as HDMI 2.0 and even faster than current
4:22 m.2 pci express ssds
4:26 there is bad news though in addition to buying a new tv a new
4:31 source device and new copies of all of your content you will even need new HDMI
4:37 2.1 cables to take advantage of the
4:41 higher resolutions just make sure that you don't get
4:44 hoodwinked into buying one of those thousand dollar silver ones from wire
4:48 world racing against the clock as a freelancer
