0:07 Welcome to my unbagging of the Hitachi
0:10 Desk Star 3 terbte. This is a 3 terbte
0:15 SATA drive. It runs at 7200 RPMs. That's
0:19 how fast the disc spins. So unlike some of the other three terbte drives on the
0:23 market in this particular price range, this is a full speed desktop drive. So,
0:28 some of the other ones are like um green
0:32 branded drives, whatever the case may be. Meaning that they do spin at a
0:36 slower spindle speed in order to conserve power. Okay, that's one of the
0:41 reasons. And also to provide higher
0:45 yields, but they don't perform quite as well. You can see this guy right here
0:48 was actually wow manufactured in December 2010. So, this is a SATA 3 6 GB
0:54 per second drive running at 7200 RPM and with 3 terb of capacity. So, what's the
1:00 benefit of higher densities? Well, you get to store more as we've known for
1:04 quite some time. You also get better performance because hard drives are a
1:10 physical movement piece of machinery. So, what that means is there's actually
1:15 a drive head moving around on there reading the data. So the closer together
1:19 your data is, the more dense it is, the quicker it can read it because the less
1:23 it has to move to get to that latest piece. So that's one of the reasons that
1:27 increasing drive density has driven up hard drive performance over the years.
1:31 So we've got SATA power back here. SATA
1:34 3 uh 6 GB per second data right there.
1:38 And I just wanted to tell you guys as part of my unboxing actually, well, the
1:42 reason I did this one was because Hitachi has what I consider to be the
1:45 most competitive drive in the market right now in terms of the performance as
1:48 well as the price point. But bear in mind before you buy a 3 TB drive, you
1:52 want to make sure of a couple things. First of all, you can see right here,
1:55 Gigabyte advertises right on the back of their Z68 board 3 TB plus drive support.
2:01 So, not all motherboards are going to support 3 TBTE densities. And the same
2:07 goes for things like external NAS boxes.
2:11 Some of them are going to require firmware updates or even a NASBOX
2:15 upgrade in order to support 3 TBTE
2:18 drives. So, the reason I actually needed some 3 TB drives and I grabbed four of
2:23 them was because I'm going to be using them for my demo of the Javelin S4 media
2:27 server and uh so I had to grab them anyway. So, I figured why not do an
2:31 unboxing. So, there it is, my unboxing. The Hitachi 3 TB drive. Don't forget to
