0:00 so the lava reviews are in and everyone seems to think it's just
0:05 folding some cardboard but you know i don't blame the people
0:09 nintendo's marketing team over the last 10 years has been hit or miss to say the
0:13 least consider the following we fit and we fit plus combined sold over 43.8
0:20 million units that's almost half the total number of wii consoles even though
0:25 it was a mold breaking accessory for a first of its kind console everyone
0:29 understood what it was and they wanted it then the wii u was a complete
0:36 flop because basically no one knew
0:39 what it even was months after it came out i invited some
0:42 friends over and not a single one of
0:45 them understood that it was a new console before they arrived after seeing
0:50 the ads most of them thought it was just a tablet accessory and these guys are
0:55 gamers and tech heads i guess that's why
0:58 it only sold 13.6 million units then
1:01 there's the switch and instant sensation so naturally the roller coaster
1:06 department was due for a flop and labo
1:10 well i don't have sales numbers yet but i can make an educated guess that
1:14 they're not very high now to be fair it
1:18 is a bit more niche than something like a wii fit naturally but i believe the
1:21 main problem is that this guy's just pretty misunderstood if you want to know
1:25 what it's really about keep watching
1:29 today's video is brought to you by mac weldon mac weldon makes great underwear
1:34 t-shirts socks wallets and more they
1:37 believe in simple shopping and if you use code tech tips you'll get 20
1:42 off through the link below
1:52 so you got me you do start with folding
1:57 cardboard but the cardboard folding experience is just teaching you the
2:00 basics in a fun creative and engaging way it's not what the whole experience
2:04 is about it's like the first mission in a game and i must add with the best
2:08 instructions of any project i've ever built hands down you'll see them through
2:12 this whole explanation the first labo project you build is a little bug car it
2:17 teaches you that vibration can make things move that you can manually
2:20 control the vibration frequency and introduces the concept that you can see
2:25 things through the ir camera especially
2:28 ir trackers the fishing game teaches you about the
2:31 physical feedback of generating resistance through the use of rubber
2:35 bands and the audible feedback from the clicking noise generated by a cardboard
2:39 tab being hit by the reel the motorbike teaches you about the use of gyroscopes
2:44 and advances on the ideas of resistance and feedback with the throttle the house
2:48 teaches you intermediate ir camera use how it responds to ir stickers and how
2:53 the stickers getting closer to the camera or turning away from the camera
2:56 etc can be registered and responded to
2:59 and finally the piano shows you that you can take these concepts much further
3:04 than you may have previously thought that you're not just limited to one or
3:08 two ir stickers or a couple basic interactions all of this is fun in games
3:12 literally and depending on the age range of the person enjoying it finishing
3:16 these projects may be the satisfying conclusion to a fun solo or group
3:21 project with great pacing but labo
3:24 is really about wait for it the lab part of the name it's about
3:29 doing things yourself and experimenting like in a lab and you do this through
3:34 toycon garage which allows you to create your own toy con projects through the
3:38 use of a basic programming interface that lets you tap into the power of the
3:43 switch and its multi-functional joy-cons that you just spent the entire cardboard
3:47 folding experience learning about and the power is real ariana grande jimmy
3:52 fallon and the roots did an astonishing performance of no tears left to cry with
3:58 just nintendo labo instruments we left out audio for copyright reasons but it
4:03 sounds incredible better than the original in my opinion go watch it now
4:08 and then come back then we have japanese researcher and
4:12 inventor kintaro yoshifuji who modded a 13 year old boy's electric wheelchair so
4:17 it could be driven around with the motorcycle toy instead of the normal
4:21 joystick for just some awesomely wholesome fun but you don't
4:25 have to go that crazy with it either i found on youtube there's people who have
4:29 recreated game and watch which is really cool there's also a bunch of different
4:33 people making like vending machines and one that i really like is you take a
4:37 container have the ir camera looking down into the container and then just
4:41 have it count how many things passes by so you can throw things and see if it
4:44 actually goes in and keep score it's cool so in conclusion then should you
4:48 buy a labo whether it's for a little kid you know or a big kid you are i think
4:53 brad on twitter actually put a little bit better than i can yes
4:57 but not for the folding cardboard it's
5:00 about the experience as a whole it's about building something with others and
5:04 empowering you to play with your own creation it works on its own but it's
5:08 best enjoyed as a social creative thing like building ikea furniture except fun
