0:05 oh 6 a.m
0:08 why i just said this oh wait
0:11 the review embargo just lifted on Intel's new CPU i gotta go check out the
0:15 wall of videos from all my favorite channels about the exact same damn thing
0:21 after this message from adrena's fedrina's cold brew coffees are
0:25 available in lots of different flavors and they come in these convenient 15
0:28 fluid ounce cans check them out using offer code Linus at LMG.g slash
0:33 madrina's coffee to get 40 off today we'll have that link below
0:46 i'm gonna have to be honest with you guys this
0:49 is not a very interesting product on its
0:53 own merit and it's a lot more straightforward than the other launches
0:56 that we've had this year but don't stop watching because there is a
1:01 twist so normally we'd talk about what's
1:05 different between the 18 core core i9 9980xc and its brother the 18 core
1:11 7980xe but you might have noticed that i said
1:15 brother not cousin predecessor that's
1:19 because these two are so similar that they're almost twins there's been no new
1:25 manufacturing process no more cores no
1:28 more cash no more pci express lanes no
1:31 memory frequency or capacity improvement nor even a slight refresh of an existing
1:37 chipset so that we can all run out and buy new motherboards
1:40 so then how did they push the clock speeds higher have they raised the TDP so that
1:46 it can just suck back more juice and run laps around the previous extreme edition
1:52 no no they did not so how does it go faster
1:57 well we know from past experience that Intel has been treating the TDP ratings
2:02 of their cpus more like guidelines for cooler design than actual
2:07 power consumption specifications so let's take a look at the one thing that
2:12 they did change just like the 9th gen
2:15 consumer 9900k our
2:19 9th gen hedt though it should be noted
2:22 that architecturally they're more like 8th and 6th generation respectively
2:26 9980xc gets a soldered heat spreader so maybe
2:31 the idea here is that as long as a cooler spec for Intel's TDP rating can
2:36 handle the CPU with nice low temps then
2:40 we're cool and it can it can turbo up more solder should help with that
2:45 let's see by how much now
2:48 given that it comes in at the same price as the outgoing 7980xe
2:53 the 9980xc only really has to perform
2:57 marginally better to come away with a strong recommendation here
3:03 no i'm sorry i'm just kidding so we're going to be comparing it to AMD's
3:06 offerings and Intel's own mainstream
3:10 platform and i think it's going to be a little rough
3:14 yeah it's a little rough even with its
3:18 higher bass and boost clocks gaming
3:21 really isn't this CPU's forte now there's no reason why it can't game
3:26 but it's immediately obvious why it shouldn't Intel's consumer cpus tooled
3:31 the 9980xes predecessors and the only
3:35 changes here are that it picks up a couple points in directx 12 and in the
3:39 very frequency dependent cs go but productivity is the real bread and
3:44 butter of an HDD chip anyway and here we do get some pretty big jumps
3:49 in performance over last gen especially in 7-zip and cinebench both in single
3:54 threaded and multi-threaded modes a trend that continues down the line
3:58 with decent results in adobe premiere and blender where the base clock
4:02 increase becomes more significant the longer the render takes to complete
4:07 with that said red ripper thanks to its lower pricing
4:11 and higher core counts continues to either compete valiantly or make Intel
4:17 look downright stupid across most of the productivity suite
4:22 now some of you may have noticed that the improvement in performance over last
4:25 gen is really inconsistent if this thing is just
4:30 200 megahertz higher across the spec sheet
4:34 then all other things being equal which
4:37 they are we should be able to pretty much guess
4:40 the uplift but we've got tests here that barely improved at all even after
4:46 multiple runs well
4:49 after further digging we think we've reached the bottom of it if we look at
4:52 our thermal results on first glance it looks like we're getting better thermals
4:58 than our 7980xe and with lower power draw
5:02 but by going deeper we think we discovered the reason that Intel has refused to say
5:09 what their all-core boost multipliers are
5:12 so our avx-512 stress test had this CPU
5:16 running at just 2.8 gigahertz across all
5:20 cores that is lower than the base clock
5:24 of the 9980xc and coincidentally the
5:28 same as the base clock on the 7980xc it
5:31 replaces so users of avx 512 workloads
5:36 yeah you're not getting an upgrade today at all
5:40 switching to avx-2 got us to 3.3
5:43 gigahertz that's just a hundred megahertz over the 7980xe with increases
5:48 in both temperatures and power draw then turning avx off all together netted
5:54 us a healthy 3.8 gigahertz all-core boost that's 400 megahertz higher than
5:59 the 7980xes so that's where the performance increase
6:04 in non-avx workloads like gaming is
6:07 coming from but it also resulted in more power draw
6:11 with our 9980xc easily surpassing every
6:14 other CPU we tested in this scenario so the bottom line is this this new sku
6:21 seems to be basically a 7980xe
6:24 with a different voltage curve which allows its better bind die to draw less
6:28 power at 2.8 gigahertz with the side effect being that it requires more juice
6:33 to achieve its higher true all-core boost clock
6:37 as for that soldered heat spreader it doesn't seem to be making much of a
6:41 difference but there are a couple of extra degrees of headroom i guess so if
6:45 you're a real masochist you can slap a fat cooler on this thing and remove the
6:49 turbo limits just make sure please that you have active vrm cooling for your
6:53 motherboard just like for the 7980xc
6:58 bottom line the numbers that you read on the box for the core i9 9980xe should be taken with
7:03 a dose of salt large enough to prune a whale let's start with the 9. this is
7:09 not a 9th gen processor in so much as it doesn't use Intel's 9th generation core
7:14 micro architecture nor is it even the ninth family of hedt processors it is
7:20 6th gen with some extra seasoning namely salt
7:24 as for these clock speeds well they're fine as long as Intel is
7:29 assuming that their customers don't intend to use their 2 000 processor for
7:34 the kinds of professional workloads that might justify a 2 000 processor which is
7:40 obviously stupid and only going to get stupider as use of avx instructions
7:45 becomes more prevalent so in my opinion
7:49 these marketing numbers are misleading at best and making matters worse
7:54 much worse is that Intel is refusing to be transparent about them we asked
7:59 straight up to have a simple table provided to us so that we'd know what to
8:04 expect during our testing and they wouldn't tell us
8:07 what is the purpose of this song and dance we can measure these numbers
8:13 why not just save us the hassle and put it in the reviewer's guide
8:17 i get that giving us these numbers makes the product look worse
8:22 but like the product is what it is we
8:25 were going to figure that out now it's just worse and you've pissed off the
8:31 reviewers who are supposed to be either recommending or slamming your product
8:36 when the embargo lifts and you guys wonder why you have pr
8:40 problems over there anyway
8:44 9980xc then it's pretty cool
8:47 but i can't think of a use case that i would buy one for
8:51 speaking of buying things mass drops nuforce edc in-ear monitors are the
8:55 sponsor for today's video they feature a single six millimeter dynamic driver on
8:59 each side with both channels closely matched for a cleaner more accurate
9:03 sound you can wear them at home in the office at the gym they're in your
9:06 monitors you can wear them anywhere that's sort of the idea they feature a
9:10 lightweight plastic housing which massdrop says is built to stand up to regular use and they come with two
9:15 removable braided cables so pick them up on massdrop for just 59.99 at the link
9:19 in the video description so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this video you can hit that
9:24 button but if you liked it hit like get subscribed or maybe consider checking out where to buy the stuff we featured
9:28 at the link in the video description also down there is our merch store which
9:31 has cool shirts like this one and our community forum which you should totally
9:34 join
