0:00 the razor blade has been a roller coaster of emotions for me over the
0:04 years with the highest peak being when i dropped a crap ton of cash
0:09 on them for my staff and the biggest valley being
0:13 shortly afterward the defect rate of the aforementioned blades that i bought for
0:18 my staff now the most recent last gen blade was
0:23 fine in fact we've got two units that are both still working like the day we got
0:27 them but it was such a boring pure spec
0:31 update that honestly i was having a hard time figuring out what the heck razer has
0:35 been working on for the last few years fortunately
0:39 all of that changes today this
0:43 is the blade 2018
0:47 and this is our sponsor today Corsair Corsair's
0:52 next generation strafe mark ii keyboard features a variety of cherry mx RGB key
0:56 switches and 8 megabytes of onboard profile storage check out the link below

1:11 once i got over the shock of razer moving to kind of a a boxier design
1:17 compared to their older curvy one my initial impressions of the razer blade
1:21 2018 are actually very positive the aluminum chassis is extremely rigid in
1:26 spite of its overall slimness and the significant reduction in bezel size
1:32 makes it feel far more 2018 than its not
1:37 so 2018 predecessors probably the most
1:40 important change to the id here though is that razer has finally made a laptop
1:46 that will impress both your gaming friends
1:49 and your business associates that is assuming of course that you do
1:53 get at least a little bit of help from dbrand and maybe tone down the RGB on
1:59 the keyboard so it has HDMI mini displayport and usb type-c along with
2:05 three full-size usb type a's and that
2:08 type c i showed you that's a Thunderbolt 3 port very nice not to mention it's got
2:13 significantly better performance so it's core i7 8750h and gtx 1070 max q
2:21 might seem a little pedestrian compared to other manufacturers who have been
2:25 bitten by the core i9 bug but as we've seen over the last couple of weeks
2:30 unless you're building a machine like this one
2:33 you can actually end up better off with
2:37 a less powerful CPU but one that you can actually cool
2:42 compared to an op one that ends up throttling all day so we're going to
2:46 fire up an ida 64 test here and we're going to see
2:49 that while the 2018 does actually trade
2:53 some clock speed for thermals when hit with a synthetic load so you can see
2:57 here it's running at 2.6 gigahertz for a short while then
3:01 it's going to drop down to our base of 2.2 gigahertz
3:05 in games this thing regularly turbos up
3:09 to 4 gigahertz ending up in about the 90 degrees range and never thermal
3:14 throttled in our 24 degree celsius office and our GPU stayed nice and cool in the
3:20 low 70s and as you can see here i'm
3:24 going to lean in close to it
3:27 the fans are certainly audible but not
3:31 distracting at all and what else is cool is that this
3:34 generation blade keeps the keyboard nice and cool even while gaming though it
3:39 should be noted that this area right here right above the keyboard that's
3:43 where your heatsink is you are not going to want to touch that
3:47 now performance is right about where we expected with
3:51 the 1070 max q getting beaten
3:55 but even then only slightly by the full fat gtx 1070 in the ASUS zephyrus
4:03 but Linus you might say what i really loved about the old blade
4:08 was how loud it was huh if you're not concerned gamer just
4:12 gonna fire up synapse here all you have to do is enter gaming mode
4:18 which actually boosts up the clock speed here we go of our gtx 1070 max-q
4:24 takes the CPU's TDP from 35 to 45 watts
4:29 with a max turbo power of 85 watts and
4:33 generally makes the blade 2018 a worse
4:36 laptop um
4:39 if you were blindfolded in gaming mode with the blade 2018 in front of you
4:44 we'd forgive you if you mistook your gaming rig for a drone taking off
4:48 we would actually recommend leaving gaming mode off until razer provides
4:52 maybe some finer control of the power and fan profiles because the performance
4:57 gain is in our estimation not really worth it now on the subject of options
5:02 that gamers should actually use the
5:06 144 hertz 1080p version of this notebook
5:09 is the one to get you can completely ignore the 60 hertz 4k version unless
5:15 you desperately need a touch screen 1080p 144hz is a perfect fit for this
5:21 CPU GPU combo and the ips panel in this
5:24 version is bright and vivid with the higher refreshment making everything
5:28 from games to even just mousing around on the desktop navigating
5:33 Windows feel smoother and more responsive
5:37 i think the only thing that i would like to see added in razer's options is a
5:42 touch version of the 1080p one because right now
5:45 they're really making you choose between the ultimate compact gaming laptop and
5:51 one that is still optimal for productivity
5:55 though this might be something that we have to take up with the actual panel
5:59 manufacturers and not so much with razer
6:02 now above the screen here is the webcam
6:05 pretty decent compared to other laptop webcams which is to say that it is
6:09 still behind literally every flagship phone on the
6:12 market and we really wish that laptop makers other than microsoft i guess
6:17 would be the only one that seems to be taking it seriously still bad we wish
6:21 they would start doing a better job given how small of a camera element you
6:25 can have and how inexpensive a camera element you can have that can end up
6:29 with a very nice looking image these days with that said at least razer
6:34 borrowed some of its mobile expertise on the speakers for this puppy they do lack
6:38 a little bit of punch on the low end but they make up for it with clear sound
6:44 that is pretty loud and excellent stereo
6:47 separation
6:58 now back to the bit that we talked about before about how this machine
7:02 could easily be used for gaming and productivity
7:08 what about the keyboard now razer keyboards have been a real
7:13 sticking point between me and alex who has kind of become our de facto
7:17 notebook editor now i have liked
7:21 most of razer's notebook keyboards with the notable exception being the blade
7:25 pro he on the other hand literally changed my personal blade
7:30 stealth's desktop background to this when he had to use it for like an hour
7:36 now fortunately razer has actually made some revisions to the keyboard in this
7:41 model and we can finally agree
7:44 it's very good it's got a nice snappy feel to the keystrokes it's not too loud
7:50 and we both feel comfortable typing on this machine for hours then
7:54 below that very satisfactory keyboard is one of the biggest touch pads that i
7:59 have ever seen on a Windows machine in fact it might be the biggest one like
8:03 check this thing out it is awesome to use like it baffles me that it has been
8:09 two years since the apple macbook pro 2016 and no
8:13 one has ripped off that design yet like it's still not quite as good as the one
8:18 on the macbook pro but with its glass top
8:21 really nice feel nice clicky buttons although not the whole surface is
8:25 clickable it's the closest that we've seen in a Windows machine opening up the
8:30 blade 2018 reveals actually pretty impressive upgradability given its size
8:36 both the RAM that's a new one and the storage can be
8:39 easily swapped and that is a hecking impressive 80 watt hour battery that
8:45 gives it four hours of life in our pc mark test now that's not an amazing
8:50 result compared to other productivity-centric notebooks but it
8:54 absolutely smashes other gaming laptops that are this
8:58 powerful bringing us to the price
9:02 our model here comes in at 2400 us
9:05 dollars which is considerably more than the ASUS zephyrus that i'm going to put
9:10 next to it right here and remember guys this is a laptop that
9:14 already had a substantial thin tax built into the toll that it was
9:19 going to take on your wallet if you're going to be gaming day and night we feel
9:22 that the zephyrus is a better choice it offers a bit more performance while
9:26 making less noise it has more room for games thanks to its hard drive in
9:30 addition to its SSD and it offers silky smooth visuals
9:36 thanks to g-sync by contrast the blade is still very competent for gaming and
9:41 crushes the zephyrus when you're on the go thanks to its more professional looks
9:45 excellent track pad smaller form factor and double the battery life but of
9:50 course you get to pay a thinness tax and a razor tax
9:56 speaking of taxes d brand ships worldwide does that have anything to do
10:01 with that whatever it doesn't matter dbrand makes awesome vinyl skins for
10:05 laptops phones tablets consoles controllers and more they use high
10:09 quality true textured 3m vinyl on every product and their skins are cut with
10:15 unrivaled precision they measure many times and cut once only to ensure they
10:20 have a factory fit for your product not only do they look great but dbrand skins
10:24 protect against incidental damage and scratches like say for example one of
10:28 the main reasons i love a dbrand skin on my laptop is sliding it in out of my bag
10:32 that way you don't end up with a completely scuffed up surface on both
10:35 sides of your laptop that sucks especially when you're paying this much
10:38 for it their products are affordable and they ship worldwide so check them out at
10:42 the link in the video description so thanks for watching guys if you
10:45 disliked this video you can hit that button but if you liked it hit like get subscribed or maybe consider checking
10:49 out where to buy the stuff we featured at the link below also down there is our
10:53 merge store which has cool shirts like this one well like this one in the sense
10:56 that they're LTT not like this one in the sense that you can buy this design anymore
11:01 and a link to our community forum which you should totally join
