0:00 thermal compound. We need it to aid thermal transfer between the hot pieces
0:06 of silicon in our computers and the
0:09 hunks of metal that are responsible for dissipating their heat into the air. But
0:15 there are so many different solutions out there, ranging from stuff that's
0:19 included with your product for free all the way up to pads that can cost
0:24 multiple dollars each for singleuse
0:28 applications. Not to mention that even with the tubes, they're so small that
0:33 you have to be frequently reordering them. Paying for shipping on these
0:37 things is inordinately expensive. But maybe there's another
0:41 way. What if you could order in bulk one
0:46 time enough thermal paste to last you
0:50 for the rest of your life? Well, I certainly tried.
1:05 Synergy is the software that lets you share your mouse and keyboard between
1:08 multiple computers. Check it out at the link in the video
1:12 description. So, right out of the gate, my main reason for buying thermal grease
1:17 in bulk has been kicked in the head. Term of validity, 2 years. So, no, it
1:22 will not indeed last you a lifetime.
1:26 unfortunately. But uh what else does this thing have to say for itself? There
1:30 wasn't a lot of information on the Amazon page. I just kind of ordered it
1:34 and went from there. But apparently there are more choices, all of which are
1:40 either better or looks like better than
1:43 the one that I got, which is the HY610.
1:47 Uh there's some instructions for how to apply and uh some sort of
1:52 features. Is low thermal resistance and
1:55 high thermal conductivity the same thing? Isn't that basically the same
1:59 thing as heat transfer? I mean, I guess if I was charged with writing the uh the
2:03 the marketing bullet points for a tub of thermal goop, I probably wouldn't be
2:08 able to do much better. Anyway, let's open it
2:12 up. Step one, open the film.
2:16 Okay, we're having a little bit of difficulty with step one
2:21 here. What the crap? What kind of
2:24 horrible film is this? Come on. Wow.
2:28 It's a really different color from most thermal compounds that I've
2:32 used and has really different packaging
2:35 that seems to be designed to keep you out of it. That is
2:40 uh that is pretty exciting.
2:46 Okay. Wow, it's got kind of like a gold color to it. I was expecting it to just
2:51 be like your standard white, you know, silicone type. Step two, mix the oil
2:57 that has separated from the rest of the thermal compound for 1 to 2 minutes.
3:03 That is a long time. And the included stick is really
3:08 not very good. But this is what royal peanut
3:12 butter looks like. Okay, this is not a very good stir
3:19 stick. Okay, mission accomplished, I
3:24 guess. New thermal compound skin enhancer gives you that shiny
3:31 glow. Seriously, look at that. So, the first step in evaluating
3:36 the value of buying in bulk is to have a
3:40 look at how much we paid for it. So apparently it's not available right now,
3:44 but apparently we paid 90 bucks for it and you get an entire kilogram of their
3:51 thermal grease compound silicone for
3:54 CPUVGA heat sink. So when you compare that to something like a tube of Arctic
4:01 aluminina, 1.75 gram and you're paying a few bucks
4:05 for that. So, if you were paying the same rate for something like IC Diamond,
4:10 again, this is uh 24 carats, whatever that is in real measurements. GH.
4:18 Okay. And they don't even list it. Brilliant. Well, whatever. The point is
4:24 that this buying like this is much much
4:27 more expensive. Oh my
4:31 gosh. Oh crap. I got thermal compound
4:34 all over my
4:40 Okay, that's fine because that leads me into the second important thing when
4:45 we're evaluating value. We got to look at performance. So, in order to do that,
4:49 we are going to need some paper towel. We are going to need some rubbing
4:53 alcohol. And we are going to need a
4:56 computer, which I conveniently have right here. And we will get to that in a
5:01 moment after I'm done cleaning my laptop.
5:10 So, here's how we're doing the test. IC Diamond isn't the best thermal compound
5:14 on the market, but it's right up there. It's a high performance thermal
5:17 compound, and if this stuff gets us anywhere near that, then it looks like a
5:23 much better deal. So, on the test bench behind me, I've been running on a Cooler
5:28 Master AIO with a 5960X about an hour and 20 minutes of
5:34 IDA stress test with just the stress FPU
5:37 box checked. And our CPU temps are sitting at 58 to 59°. I would consider
5:44 either of those to be a tie when we're done this. So, all that's left to do now
5:49 is shut this puppy down, replace the thermal compound that's on here with our
5:55 Value Special HY600 thermal grease, fire
5:59 it back up, wait for it to reach equilibrium, and have a look at the
6:04 results. Okay. Right. So, that's a very good
6:09 application of the IC diamond that was on there. That's actually really good
6:12 for us to know.
6:18 Okay. So, we'll use the spatula method of
6:25 applying it, I guess. Oh, crap. I got
6:31 it. Um, okay. You know what? This is actually kind of hard, Brandon. I know
6:35 it's hard. This applicator is not optimal. I'm not blaming you. It's just
6:39 funny. Okay. And it is already crappier.
6:45 So, um, this stuff sucks.
6:49 Um, 64 degrees. That is a full 6° higher
6:54 than a high quality thermal compound. Meaning that I just spent
7:00 $90 on some really crappy thermal paste.
7:05 Not
7:10 recommended. Do you use Amazon? Well, we
7:13 do and we think they're great. I personally have two Amazon Prime
7:17 accounts. That's right. One is not enough for me. I have one for Amazon
7:21 Canada and one for the US. What's Prime, you might ask? And I might respond,
7:25 really? You've never heard of Prime? Okay. It costs $99 annually and gives
7:29 you access to a ton of cool features. Prime now, which is in very, very
7:34 limited regions like free two-hour delivery. They've got their regular free
7:38 Prime shipping. They've got access to Prime Video, which is unlimited
7:41 streaming of movies and TV episodes, Twitch Prime, which gives you exclusive
7:45 discounts on physical games and new releases, as well as what are all these
7:49 stupid notes about the WAN Show, blah blah blah. Consider subscribing over
7:52 there, etc., whatever. The point is, check it out at the link below, Amazon
7:57 Prime. Also, you could just go buy stuff because they have
8:01 everything. So, thanks for watching, guys. If you dislike this video, you can
8:05 hit that dislike button. But if you liked it, hit the like button. Get subscribed. Maybe consider checking out
8:08 the links in the video description. We've got where to buy the stuff we
8:15 featured. Buy other stuff. Maybe we'll link that instead. We've got our merch
8:19 store. We've got our community forum. And we've got other videos which you
8:23 should definitely check out. I will see you guys again next time.
