0:00 this is some generic ass looking packaging right here
0:04 uh but anyway we reached out to the brand
0:08 integral because they have the highest
0:11 capacity micro sd card on the market then
0:16 it arrived and we looked at it and we went
0:20 what are we even gonna do with this why do you even need a
0:24 512 gig micro sd card and then
0:29 the answer hit me what if you could use it
0:32 to turn your phone into an external game drive with your
0:37 whole steam collection on it let's give it a shot shall we
0:41 mac weldon whose underwear i'm wearing right now wants you to be more
0:45 comfortable so if you don't love the first pair of underwear you can keep it
0:49 and get a full refund with their try on guarantee use code tech tips and get 20
0:53 off at the link below
1:02 so to ensure that we have a decent experience maybe not even a great
1:06 experience but a decent one there are three things that we're gonna want
1:10 before we get started number one is a phone with a micro sd slot the
1:15 iphone 10 and the oneplus 6
1:19 have no expansion whatsoever i mean that's always been true for apple
1:23 and then the alcatel 3v so it's a budget phone with very little on-board storage
1:27 so it makes sense it would be expandable the galaxy s9 and the blackberry key2
1:32 all do have microsd slots
1:35 then step 2 is that we need to make sure
1:38 that the phone supports fast enough data transfer speeds that you're going to be
1:43 able to load up a game in a reasonable amount of time so that already
1:47 eliminates the alcatel 3v because that right there is a micro b usb 2 slot it's
1:54 going to be super slow finally
1:58 because usb type c is kind of a wild
2:02 west or like a pirate code type of
2:05 standard where you know it's more guidelines we're
2:08 going to have to actually verify that the port on here even transfers data at
2:14 usb 3 speeds so for a 1.65 gig file
2:18 that's looking pretty good it looks like we are getting usb 3 speeds so either of
2:23 these phones is a candidate except
2:26 for one little trick if you go and you have a look at the
2:30 full spec list for them you can see here that tcl who produces phones under the
2:35 blackberry brand now is only actually certifying the card
2:40 slot for up to 256 gig micro sd cards because for all
2:46 intents and purposes 512 gig cards don't
2:50 really exist yet like integral is not
2:54 the kind of brand that typically finds
2:57 its way onto a qualified vendor list
3:00 with all of that said samsung does apparently say yes in fact the slot
3:07 will support up to 512 gig cards now as
3:10 long as they use the same microsd standard the odds are it'll work in both
3:15 but this card right here actually costs
3:19 about 300 british pounds to buy
3:24 so it's okay it was just it was just the
3:27 adapter so this is not an insignificant purchase
3:31 and it's not the kind of thing that you can just to try out in the store and then return it there aren't a whole lot
3:35 of places where you can buy it before we go any further i just want to plug it
3:40 into a regular reader make sure it's working and also do a quick speed test
3:44 here so they don't give detailed specs other than saying that it's a class 10
3:48 card microsdxc 1v10
3:52 and then they say up to 80 megabytes per second
3:56 then if you read the fine print transfer speed write speed lower
4:00 okay that's definitely lower
4:04 oh that's a lot lower i can see why they
4:08 don't want to put that in their specs but they probably should because that
4:12 would be good to know when you have 512 gigs of storage that it's going to take
4:17 you a very long time
4:20 to fill it up 18 megabytes a second sounds a lot better than one gig per
4:25 minute but it turns out they're actually about the same so it would take you like
4:29 nine hours to fill this thing up from empty
4:37 let's have a look at read speeds well that's not bad
4:40 that's well in excess of our spec unless it's using a cached version in
4:45 RAM somewhere that's still sitting there in order to transfer this so i think
4:49 it's actually possible that this sd card is not cooperating perfectly with my
4:55 reader here so what we're going to do is we're going to throw it into the blackberry key too and see what happens
5:01 so it pops up right away tap here to transfer media files bippity boppity
5:07 all good
5:12 perfect okay
5:16 so everything's going actually exactly according to plan now
5:20 all we've got to do is fire up steam
5:23 and install some games library folder
5:31 okay did not see that one coming assign
5:36 drive letter to a smartphone so
5:39 after about half an hour i may have a solution
5:45 so there's a class of applications so there's a couple here that i tried i
5:49 tried one called web dav server and i tried another one called dav drive and
5:55 webdav server has the ability
5:58 to reconfigure it to a different home directory so i have chosen the external
6:04 sd card directory then what you do is you start the server and it gives you
6:09 an http address that's using uh like a local ip
6:15 okay then you get yourself a web webdav client
6:20 on the pc so this guy is called netdrive3 i've got
6:25 a trial of it you go ahead and you configure
6:29 your storage type which is web dav
6:32 then you go mount as i s local drive whatever letter
6:37 you want mount on boot
6:40 uh writable on the fly uploading an explorer and you select a
6:46 path uh right yes you click connect
6:50 that's a good sign 472 gigs free okay supposed to be here
6:57 that's a good sign too let's try to put a file in it i haven't
7:00 gotten this far oh
7:04 we've got right access let's find out what the speeds are oh
7:07 wow it's slow
7:13 one and a half megabytes a second i have
7:16 an idea though i haven't actually tried this in a very
7:21 long time like not since otg was
7:24 sort of the way you do things because we're clearly not using the usb
7:28 connection you can see here we're using wi-fi i just disconnected it but phones
7:33 do support Ethernet theoretically Ethernet
7:38 bloop and bloop
7:46 yes i know all right let's get a new ip in there
7:49 177.
7:52 okay theoretically that's up now let's go ahead and do another
7:56 file transfer test that is
8:00 significantly less brutal tastic
8:03 and improving and unproving
8:07 and okay now we're getting pretty oh
8:15 come on all right in the meantime
8:19 uh let's go ahead and try to add it as a library folder
8:24 h drive new folder steam library
8:28 select
8:38 we might be in luck here
8:45 literally hasn't loaded yet literally lets me click agree
8:48 allocating disk space i'm guessing that's not going to be that fast so i
8:53 finally brought in an outside consultant who had the brilliant idea of uh what
8:57 was it hard linking so yeah
9:01 documents so steamy should go to steamy
9:05 in the phone it doesn't and it doesn't
9:08 and then my web dav server ran into
9:11 apparently a fairly well documented issue where it was having problems with
9:16 files over a certain size so it would allocate the space for the game but then
9:21 wouldn't actually be able to transfer them leading me to the what was to many of
9:26 you probably fairly obvious conclusion that this just isn't a very good idea
9:31 and or a realistic use case for a large
9:34 micro sd card and if you really wanted to carry around
9:38 your game library on a micro sd card you would probably be better off just
9:43 plugging it into a micro sd reader like a normal human being
9:48 so you'll just have to copy files to it
9:52 which will take a long time so there you have
9:56 it it's 512 gigs it's the size of your
9:59 fingernail and we're not 100 sure what to do with it but maybe you guys can
10:03 come up with ideas let us know in the comments below
