0:00 over the last few years there's been a let's call it a trend among computer
0:04 enthusiasts to no longer use protection
0:08 and i've definitely changed my habits as well
0:11 and for every day that might seem okay but you get outside
0:16 your comfort zone every now and then you know you go someplace you've never been
0:21 before or someone you don't know messes with
0:25 some place that you used to be comfortable in and before you know it you're lost and alone
0:31 and everybody wants your bits
0:34 which is why bitdefender
0:38 reached out to sponsor this video about
0:41 their security software and the role
0:44 that security solutions play in 2018. in
0:48 fact they're so confident about their
0:51 role that they've got something planned for the end of this video
0:56 spoiler alert it's a
1:07 okay so first things first um
1:10 why bitdefender i'm pretty sure that i'm
1:13 on the record saying that i don't use antivirus software on my
1:17 personal machine anymore i mean it's not that i don't care about my security i do
1:22 use security software here at work we've got a site-wide license and i do use it
1:27 on relatives and friends machines it's just that for myself i found that
1:32 common sense and reasonable precautions are good for most
1:36 things and then what i'll do is i'll just roll
1:40 out a sacrificial virtual machine when i need to do something a little sketchy
1:44 like let's say i need an iso for an old version of Windows or something
1:49 although that is horribly inconvenient for most people and Anthony who actually
1:54 worked on writing this video has seen plenty of cocky folks like me taking
1:58 down a peg at his old pc repair job where they recommended bitdefender and
2:03 on that subject um the channel you're watching right now
2:07 was actually hijacked when
2:10 i clicked on something i shouldn't have got a key logger and they took away the
2:15 account that happened probably about six or seven years ago so this is one of
2:18 those do as i say not as i do types of things anyway hot off winning product of
2:23 the year and consistently being at the top for security bitdefender came to us
2:28 with a challenge break our protection
2:32 clearly they don't know who they're dealing with but before we go about testing that
2:38 let's break down some of those reasonable precautions that you and
2:43 you and everyone you know should be implementing regardless to prevent your
2:47 data from getting lost via an infection or worse
2:50 first of all keep local backups and raid is not a
2:55 backup of all critical data this lets
2:58 you get back up and running more quickly in the case of
3:03 a drive crash or if you get hit by ransomware which
3:07 yes is still going strong not to mention is getting more sophisticated all the
3:12 time as it happens bitdefender can actually protect important folders
3:16 wholesale and behaviorally protects everything else against even zero days
3:21 that haven't been patched yet and this is before the malware has a chance to
3:25 encrypt anything so this at minimum saves you from having to restore from
3:30 your backups and at worst having to pay a ransom to
3:35 maybe if they actually go through with their word i mean remember these are not the
3:39 most um up and up folks to maybe get your
3:43 college thesis or your vacation photos back
3:46 none of that though will save you if the building is on fire so you should also
3:50 keep an off site back up these days cloud storage services dominate this
3:54 space but you can also accomplish this by just keeping a backup drive in a
3:59 separate building like a friend's or your parent's house
4:03 now back to that common sense theory of personal cyber
4:06 security that essentially boils down to
4:09 three important points one keep everything up to date at minimum
4:16 stay on top of your security updates number two
4:19 keep your stock protection enabled this acts as a
4:22 better than nothing last line of defense once something is on your pc which
4:28 brings us to three don't download stupid stuff
4:32 but i mean stupid's not really a fair word for it because as easy
4:38 or common sense as some of these things might be for you it's not necessarily
4:43 common sense to people who don't live and breathe tech every day and
4:47 furthermore it's not that uncommon for popular
4:50 websites to become targets of poisoning attempts by hackers and we've actually
4:55 had additionally some very convincing phishing scams roll into our inboxes
5:01 that appeared to be internal mail from
5:04 other people who work here and these are both things that bitdefender offers
5:08 proactive protection against i mean i'm sure that you guys all know
5:13 someone you know who they are who downloads anything
5:17 with a shiny button so why don't we go
5:21 ahead and watch the rest of this video
5:24 from that perspective so Anthony has provided me
5:29 with a handy-dandy list of skeezy sites
5:33 that i can visit and i've got a virtual
5:36 machine that is protected by bitdefender up here
5:40 my mandate is to go to all of these sites
5:43 follow any link that crosses my path and click on basically every ad also i'll be
5:49 installing some apps just clicking next through the installers without checking
5:53 to see what they're putting on my system
5:56 if my sister's watching basically i'm channeling you
6:01 alright so right now we're not in autopilot so it's
6:05 going to give me notifications for pretty much everything that happens this
6:09 is total security so this is their top of the line anti
6:14 bad stuff protection it's been a long time since i've gone to a sketchy site
6:18 what the heck is this steve mike
6:21 fireforce dot info
6:25 weird yeah no internet's working no i wonder
6:28 if that one's down
6:31 dbsa-dream.com to be very clear we're not recommending you go any of these
6:34 places bitdefender blocked this page oh so is
6:39 it actually blocking content from the page too it could be yeah huh all right
6:44 laro dimas
6:47 how are these not loading
6:50 so even my browser doesn't like this one you know what
6:54 why was i using chrome in the first place
6:57 huh Anthony none of these pages are working
7:00 wait oh it's a sketchy redirect maybe
7:04 these are some friends that i can talk to oh i won because there's no real
7:08 domains on oh better pixelate that
7:12 Anthony were you browsing these sites at work i
7:16 gotta find some stuff to download here that sounds pretty sketchy
7:20 is this one down too skewerwill.com
7:26 visit the site oh these sights are so slow
7:31 all right we found some of them that are still up
7:35 so i think i would like some free video game
7:39 what is when.com here our zoom driver update that sounds pretty good
7:44 meanwhile let's go to cinehe.com this looks perfectly legitimate it's
7:49 just running off youtube activate your free account 256-bit ssl
7:54 encryption you are safe i don't have like a fake credit card to give them
7:59 yeah sure here we go 50 euros a month yeah no
8:04 driversupport.exe that seems good yeah
8:08 okay with active optimization
8:12 it's okay well while that's running let's find some other stuff here's an ad for adobe this looks like
8:17 it may actually be a real thing is is torch bad
8:21 it's adware it's hardware okay what do i care where the publisher is yes
8:27 the ultimate best site is to watch free movies okay so that game just didn't
8:32 seem to actually do anything active optimization
8:36 do i have to actually buy something to get infected by this oh my god we need
8:41 something a registry optimizer quick easy and safe
8:45 start scan 24 items repaired what does that even
8:49 mean nothing free make video converter
8:53 yes install all the things google docs for dummies
8:57 these aren't even downloads these are just like stupid clickbait lists
9:02 okay so this is just junkware
9:05 oh hey something finally tried to screw us
9:11 freemake video downloader tried to make a change to a file in a protected folder
9:16 and was blocked and the program crashed
9:20 so we found out why it seemed like it was impossible to infect the computer we
9:25 went into the notifications for bitdefender and it's blocking the sites
9:29 with malware on them and in the warnings tab we've got the junk that we just
9:34 installed so i guess if something falls into the
9:37 fishing fraud or malware category then it's insta-blocked and if it's
9:41 potentially unwanted and not malicious it just warns you about it
9:46 okay no maybe i'll just turn it off for a
9:50 little bit is there a way to turn it off
9:54 here we go all right
9:57 all right advanced threat defense off off off
10:02 off okay come on
10:07 yes we are providing all the administrative access you need permit
10:14 no threat move to quarantine how did it do that
10:19 how did it do that i want to get jiggy with some infected pages here
10:26 i'm trying so hard to install garbage
10:31 detected threat is being disadv even if i try and turn it off
10:36 it's still working so overall we found this exercise both
10:41 frustrating but then also reassuring
10:44 because initially i thought it was basically impossible to infect a
10:49 computer these days no matter what kind of websites we tried to go to
10:54 or what we tried to click on it had been quietly keeping us from actually getting
10:59 infected with anything um they've got a couple of different
11:02 modes so they've got both a game mode and a movie mode which you can check out
11:06 in the dashboard and they have been found consistently to have among the
11:09 best detection rates in the industry according to av comparatives and av test
11:14 so there you go guys
11:17 most of us like me and Anthony and you
11:21 the one who's watching this are not gonna do this kind of thing on a daily
11:25 basis although you know probably more often than we
11:29 might like to admit we do end up on somewhat sketchy websites but we all
11:32 know someone who does frequent free tv
11:36 sites or you know registry repair application sites and does fall for
11:41 online scams and that's where bitdefender really comes into its own
11:44 because you can install it for them and then not have to deal with the fallout
11:49 you know three or six months down the line and speaking of six months as luck
11:53 would have it exclusively for our viewers bitdefender is giving away a
11:57 six-month subscription for new users so give it a try and if you're the family
12:01 tech support guru maybe don't install it on your own pc necessarily install it on
12:06 a loved one's computer set it on autopilot and then reduce the number of
12:09 support calls that you have to deal with so thanks for watching guys if you just
12:13 liked this video you can hit that button but if you liked it hit like get subscribed or maybe consider checking
12:17 out where to buy the stuff we featured that is of course bitdefender at the link in the video description also down
12:21 there is our merch store which has cool shirts like this one and our community
12:24 forum which you should totally join
