0:00 from a strictly pric to Performance standpoint the Acer Predator Helios 300
0:05 absolutely crushes any gaming laptop
0:09 that we've looked at before but in order
0:12 to get the same basic gaming specs as a
0:18 $1900 razor blade into a laptop for only
0:23 $1,100 what other sacrifices did they
0:26 have to make lots it turns out but that
0:30 doesn't mean that it's a bad product
0:41 either browse privately and securely
0:44 with tunnel bear the simple VPN app try
0:48 tunnel bear for free at the link in the video
0:51 description we were pleasantly surprised by the Predator Helios 300 when first
0:56 opening it up the brushed aluminum on the back of the display and the Palm
1:01 rest of the keyboard gives the laptop an unexpectedly premium feel and the
1:06 rigidity of the chassis helps here as well it certainly looks the part of a
1:10 gaming laptop with red accents it's not
1:14 terribly subtle but in my opinion it doesn't go over the top in its attention
1:18 seeking Behavior there are areas like
1:21 around the screen and the bottom where materials like plastic rain Supreme and
1:27 it doesn't have the reassuringly solid feel of something by Alienware but
1:33 it avoids feeling cheap so I'm willing to forgive that two type a USB 2s and a
1:41 type A and type-c USB 3 plus Ethernet
1:44 HDMI 2.0 and even a full-size SD card
1:47 slot adds up to pretty good IO but
1:51 what's more than pretty good maybe even
1:54 fantastic are the internal specs of this shockingly potent little devil with a 6
2:00 gig GTX 1060 a core
2:04 i77700 HQ and 16 gigs of ddr4 memory at
2:10 just over 1,000 bucks this was legitimately the first time like I play
2:16 this game I'll guess how much something costs when I go around to people's
2:19 booths at trade shows this was the first time in years that I was shocked to see
2:25 the price tag on a laptop now obviously
2:29 there are differences here but for the
2:33 pieces of Hardware that actually affect
2:36 gaming performance the Acer Helios on
2:40 paper is the same as much more expensive
2:44 competing products but how about the
2:48 experience well let's put it this way you won't have to worry about having to
2:52 set a game at anything lower than high since this thing has no problem pinning
2:58 the frame rate at the 6 6 HZ refresh rate of the display so no surprises here
3:04 it turns out that whether you cram 370 horsepower into a charger or a two-door
3:10 Civic it's going to move pretty fast and
3:14 it's a bit on the chubby side at 31 mm
3:17 but unlike some of the sleeker and more expensive gaming machines we've seen
3:22 underload the Helios is able to stay nice and cool without becoming overly
3:26 loud either it even Sports a PR pretty
3:30 decent webcam but not all is hunky dory
3:35 to have an IPS screen on a budget oriented gaming laptop at all should be
3:42 the icing on the cake and it does have one whoa but how how do I put this
3:49 delicately it's kind of like a grocery store cake where you bite into it
3:54 expecting homemade cream cheese icing and you end up with some canned Betty
3:58 Crocker that's a little passed its best before I mean to be clear the viewing
4:03 angles and contrast ratio are great it's
4:06 still icing you just regret asking for a
4:10 corner piece maximum brightness could be better described as maximum glowi and
4:16 average Delta e values of 5.67 are only
4:20 okay if you don't see huge outliers and
4:24 you're covering more than 67% of the srgb color space
4:30 I don't want to sound ungrateful here I still wouldn't personally trade it for a
4:35 TN I'm just saying that you won't be doing any serious video editing or
4:39 photoshop unless you want to invest in a secondary monitor to check your work
4:45 another area that Acer skimped is the 48w hour battery to their credit Acer
4:51 was at least honest about this but with
4:55 this kind of showing in our standard battery test basically if you're cting
5:00 one of these around to class you should expect to be getting familiar with the
5:04 power outlet locations the trackpad though is a return to things that are
5:08 pretty good it's accurate and tap to click and gestures work well but I do
5:14 wish that the force required to press was a little less so that dragging and
5:18 dropping files was easier and the keyboard feels pretty good too again the
5:23 force to press the keys is a little too high and they are touch mushy so I can't
5:28 get quite as fast as I could on something like an Alienware or the
5:32 surface laptop which is a bummer because on a gaming laptop quick and accurate
5:36 key presses are a plus but overall it
5:40 does the job it needs to and the inclusion of both a backlight and a full
5:44 number pad are appreciated and the positives don't end there if the 250 gig
5:51 SATA SSD which can be upgraded to NVMe
5:54 by the way isn't quite enough to house your gaming collection adding up to 32
6:00 gigs of RAM or a 2 and 1/2 in hard drive
6:03 on the Helios is really easy each of those has its own compartment on the
6:07 bottom so it only takes one screw to access it should be noted though that
6:11 anything beyond that requires a full disassembly so then in response to our
6:16 original question what you're giving up is screen and battery so if you want a
6:22 laptop for productivity and you just want to game on it a little bit I'd go
6:27 for something at this price point with a G GTX 1050 TI a core i5 and potentially
6:34 nearly double the battery life but if
6:37 you want a machine that is laser focused
6:40 on price to Performance for gaming at
6:44 just over $1,000 the Predator Helios 300
6:48 knocks it out of the park highly
6:51 recommended it's on fire it's that
