0:20 we start answering this question with a look at our old friend the mechanical
0:25 hard drive already there are a number of
0:28 Technologies in the works that will make hard drives more spacious while still
0:32 allowing them to fit in that familiar 3 and 1/2 in enclosure hard drive makers
0:37 like Seagate and Western Digital are working on Technologies such as shingled
0:42 magnetic recording which overlaps data tracks to essentially make them narrower
0:48 bit patterned media which can encode one bit of data to just one magnetic grain
0:54 instead of a group and heat assisted magnetic recording or hammer
1:00 which heats up small areas of the hard disk allowing the magnetic grains
1:05 themselves that store the data to be a lot smaller and you can learn more about

1:14 hard drive capacities to 50 terabytes by
1:18 the year 2020 wow but aside from changing how
1:22 magnetic platter data recording Works manufacturers are also looking at using
1:27 more exotic materials hard drives filled with helium instead of good oldfashioned
1:32 air are already on the market since
1:35 helium is less dense than air there's less fluid resistance when the drive
1:40 platters spin meaning more precise positioning of the Reed right head with
1:45 lower power consumption and all of this without making your mp3 sound like the

2:42 smaller transistors for our ssds there's
2:46 holographic data storage that takes the concept of a dual layer optical disc to
2:52 a completely new dimension instead of just storing data in a two-dimensional
2:57 pattern of what are effectively pits in the the surface holographic discs can
3:02 store data in threedimensional patterns
3:05 using nearly the entire thickness of the disc in fact multi-terabyte single diss
3:13 may be available at some point though
3:16 progress on actually getting holographic storage to Market has been agonizingly
3:21 slow and unfortunately the Jedi Council only existed very far away and very long

4:11 of different applications so perhaps it shouldn't be that surprising that
4:15 scientists are looking at it as a way to store data other than your genome a
4:20 single cubic millimeter of DNA can hold
4:24 over 685 terabytes of data so just think of
4:29 of how many games videos and dank memes
4:33 a DNA Drive could hold one day even if
4:36 it were only the size of a modern SD card DNA is also very stable and could
4:42 hold data for millions of years making it potentially a great choice for
4:47 archival storage down the line but hold on a minute lonus how do you retrieve
4:53 information from a puddle well although
4:56 scientists work with DNA in liquid form don't scoff at the concept of liquid
5:02 state storage researchers have recently used clusters of nanop particles only
5:07 about five microns wide about the same size as your typical bacterium suspended
5:13 in a fluid to hold huge amounts of data I'm talking one terabyte in only a
5:19 tablespoon this works by using small temperature changes to rearrange these
5:24 nanop particles to different states and since each cluster of these particles
5:29 can have millions of different states not just the binary zero and one we're
5:33 all used to liquid state storage could reach capacities that just aren't
5:38 possible with present-day Tech no word
5:41 though on when liquid drives might hit the market or if you'll have to buy them
5:45 in a bag like those weirdos from Eastern Canada already seem to do with milk are
