0:00 what is a motherboard
0:03 motherboard like when she tells that story that I've heard like a hundred
0:07 times about when I was young and crayon up the nose and man I just wish she'd
0:11 stop telling that story that's a joke no where the CPU or
0:16 the central processing unit is colloquially referred to as the brain of
0:20 a PC the motherboard or the main board is often described as the backbone it's
0:25 the component in a PC and for that matter pretty much any other electronic
0:28 device whether it's a game console C device a piece of industrial equipment
0:31 or a cell phone that contains all the slots that everything else goes into all
0:36 right so how do I find it Well that's usually pretty easy because it's the
0:39 largest PCB or printed circuit board inside the device and it's covered in
0:44 slots connectors chips and other electronic dude ads at its very core a
0:49 motherboard is just a bare PCB and contains no actual processing power it
0:54 relies on other processors like the CPU and GPU which are sometimes socketed in
0:58 and at other times soldered on directly to perform all of the actual work and
1:03 give life to your device but that doesn't make it simple motherboard
1:06 designers are tasked not with creating a simple platform onto which everything
1:11 else will be stuck like Lego but rather with crafting an infrastructure for some
1:16 of the fastest and most delicate Electronics imaginable even though the
1:20 majority of the other components used in the system aren't manufactured by the
1:24 motherboard maker they are responsible often for choosing these components for
1:29 their placement and configuration and making sure that every signal will be
1:33 sent where it's needed interpreted correctly then passed to where it needs
1:37 to go and all of this without excess interference even something as seemingly
1:43 trivial as a single trace that's a little bit too long can cause one
1:47 electrical signal to be a little bit late and another a little bit early and
1:51 cause instability that's why you'll sometimes see little zigzag patterns in
1:55 the traces on a PCB those aren't for beauty they're not for looks everything
1:59 about a motherboard is highly functional
2:02 a motherboard also isn't purely Hardware either there's a software or firmware
2:07 component on a PC this is referred to as a BIOS or UEFI and is often the
2:12 difference between a good motherboard and a great motherboard this software
2:17 acts as a way for the manufacturer to correct small bugs that are inevitable
2:21 with something so complex and to add functionality in the future it also
2:26 serves as a way for the user to alter settings or tweak them for optimal
2:30 functionality on consumer electronics this software component also exists but
2:34 it's normally not user accessible all right so what if my motherboard dies
2:38 which might even be while you're sitting here watching this video well for consumer electronics and phones and
2:43 whatnot you're often hooped if you can find a new one there are often extremely
2:48 fragile cables and connectors attached to them and if you can't find a detailed
2:52 guide on a site like I fix it for example I would recommend leaving it to
2:55 the pros for a PC life is a bit simpler many PCS use industry standard
3:00 components including the motherboard but many others use proprietary and
3:04 expensive Alternatives so the only way to find out for sure is to contact your
3:08 manufacturer directly but there's a good chance that you'll be able to get your
3:11 hands on something once you've got a new one replacing a PC motherboard is in
3:15 many cases not difficult but it can be
3:18 timec consuming and tedious and will usually involve removing pretty much
3:22 every other component in the system in order to extract it and replace it the
3:26 good news is you can check out one of the excellent PC build guides on my
3:30 other channel and that'll tell you pretty much everything you need to know about installing a motherboard any other
3:35 questions you might have can likely be answered on the lineus tech tips.com
3:38 Forum where people are friendly and happy to help speaking of friendly and
3:42 happy to help Hotspot Shield takes special care of our community members
3:45 and has been not only a sponsor of our videos but also a supporter of the users
3:50 we refer to them complaints and questions from folks on the line of
3:53 techtips form are easy for me to escalate and get resolved so I guess
3:58 that's great but what exactly is hot spot Shield you might ask well it's an
4:01 easy to ous VPN service which is basically a way of obscuring your IP
4:04 from the sites you're visiting this can be helpful if you want to make your
4:07 footsteps more difficult to track if you want to keep others from easily finding
4:11 out your location and Identity or even if you just want to bypass geographical
4:15 restrictions such as sites that are blocked in your region or services that
4:20 vary from one place to another like Netflix so yay us Netflix roll they have
4:23 a free trial of their Elite service which you can find in the link in the
4:26 video description and if you like it you can use offer code lus to save 20% on
4:31 your first purchase thanks for watching this episode as fast as possible guys
4:34 like this video if you liked it dislike it if you disliked it leave a comment and let me know what you thought cuz I
4:39 do read the comments for the most part and as always don't forget to subscribe
