0:00 what if i told you that the vast majority of what's on the
0:04 internet is part of something that sounds like it's right out of a
0:07 cyberpunk thriller it's called the deep web
0:12 and although you might not feel like tank from the matrix you probably use it
0:16 just about every day without even
0:19 realizing it but what exactly is this
0:22 deep web actually the definition is quite simple
0:26 it's the stuff on the internet that you can't bring up with google or your
0:30 favorite search engine including everything from private social media
0:34 profiles to hidden subreddits to medical scientific and business databases to the
0:39 archived pages you'd find on the wayback machine and really just any page that
0:44 you simply can't get to without having
0:47 the actual url and the permissions to access it and all this stuff really adds
0:53 up i mean just think of how many facebook accounts there are how many
0:57 companies with sensitive data and cloud storage and how many private youtube
1:02 videos there are of god only knows what although it's nearly impossible to
1:07 determine exactly how big the deep web is it's been estimated that 99
1:14 of content stored on the internet is part of the deep web leading some to
1:18 compare the internet to an iceberg with the deep web being the huge mass you
1:23 can't see below the surface except it's made up of corporate secrets and drunken
1:28 selfies instead of ice all right Linus uh speaking of secrets
1:32 and substances i just read a news story about some big shot online you know drug
1:38 kingpin or weapons dealer that got busted was he or she operating in the
1:42 deep web too uh actually not exactly there's a lot of
1:46 confusion between the deep web and the dark web which is a somewhat similar
1:52 concept but has some very important differences unlike the deep web sites on
1:57 the dark web are often meant to be publicly accessible however you can't
2:02 get to these places without special software that usually encrypts and
2:06 anonymizes your connection in some way
2:09 the best known system that does this is the onion router or tor which works by
2:14 encrypting data when it's sent and bouncing it through a number of nodes
2:18 until it arrives at its destination each node only decrypts enough of the message
2:24 to know where to bounce it next so only the receiving user knows the actual
2:28 content this successive peeling back of
2:31 encryption layers inspired the onion's name because of tor's high degree of
2:36 anonymity it's earned a reputation for all sorts of illicit stuff like
2:41 trafficking of drugs weapons animals and humans crime for hire scams botnets and
2:47 all sorts of other cd enterprises but believe it or not tor wasn't invented by
2:52 some group of online mafioso types hoping to make a quick buck it was
2:57 actually developed by the us navy to protect sensitive military
3:00 communications and although the us government is busy trying to catch those
3:05 who use tor for nefarious purposes there
3:08 are a lot of nobler uses for tor and other dark nets as well they can provide
3:14 protection to human rights activists and oppressive nations a people with fringe
3:19 political views or outside societies mainstream those hiding from abusers
3:24 whistleblowers or just folks who want more privacy in an age where people are
3:29 concerned legitimately about surveillance in fact uncle sam actually
3:33 heavily funds the tor project to help people who are trying to speak out in
3:37 authoritarian countries so with the continued growth of social media and
3:42 cloud storage and an online community that is increasingly aware of threats to
3:46 privacy usage of the deep and dark webs should continue to climb rapidly but
3:51 just remember guys that even the best security can be defeated by someone
3:56 looking over your shoulder
