the occipital structure sensor it's a mobile 3d sensor that allows you to
0:04
capture dense geometry and high fidelity 3d models very quickly it has a mode
0:09
that allows you to capture an entire room at once and it even lets you play
0:14
with some augmented reality games stay tuned for more of that and hit the like
0:18
button down below if you want to see us check out more 3d printers in the future
0:32
vote for turnip we always say it on the WAN Show buy the shirt it's in the link
0:35
in the description down below so why the structure sensor well i've
0:39
been really interested in 3d scanners and printers for quite some time now but
0:44
usually the best option is like shapeways or whatever and it's kind of
0:47
been under that whole too expensive and not really good enough for mainstream or
0:51
me yet category yes i know i'm a virtual reality nut but one or two vr dev kits
0:56
is nowhere near the cost of a truly awesome 3d scanning and printing setup
1:00
let alone the cost of plastics the structure sensor stood out to me however
1:04
and i decided that it's time to start getting my hands dirty in the scanning
1:08
and printing space unlike most 3d scanners the structure sensor isn't a
1:13
contained unit with a spinning platform or a moving camera or whatever instead
1:17
it just drops your ipad air 1 or 2 ipad mini 2 or 3 or 4th gen ipad then plugs
1:23
in through a lightning connector to the ipad itself and the internal battery of
1:27
the structure sensor is charged through power from your mains not the expected
1:32
micro usb solution it's a depth sensor using an invisible laser projected
1:37
infrared blast an infrared camera to capture and then in conjunction with the
1:42
ipad's accelerometer gyroscope and compass it can map out a relatively
1:46
accurate depth map that can be put together into a point cloud and finally
1:51
modeled if that's what you want these movement-based mechanics really give you
1:56
the freedom to scan some very interesting objects that you may not be
2:00
able to put into a contained type scanning unit
2:04
maybe the material's shape or actually just the material could be the problem
2:08
imagine scanning a sand castle for most people this wouldn't be very possible
2:12
due to picking up said sand castle and having it fall apart on the way to the
2:16
scanner but if you were able to bring the scanner to the sand castle
2:20
then you got a different story so 3d scanning mapping entire rooms playing
2:25
augmented reality games and maybe some more how well does it do it all let's
2:30
find out so this is just the object scanner and you can use your thumbs to
2:34
resize how large the box is you don't want it to be too small
2:38
because then i'll end up chopping off part of poor terran's head
2:42
and you don't want it to be too large because then i'll pick up stuff like the
2:45
chairs and the desks so i'm gonna guess it's around here i'll get some of his
2:50
shoulders in there and as you can see it'll put kind of this
2:54
this white stuff on top of whatever
2:58
it has in the scan whatever data you'll get you can notice already that it seems
3:02
to be doing a pretty good job but i don't have taran's glasses in here it
3:07
doesn't pick up glasses very well because it's clear and the ir light
3:12
isn't going to kind of come back to the sensor very well off of something that's
3:15
clear when it goes red like that i'm too close so i need to kind of come back
3:20
so i just moved too quickly you might be able to see this on the
3:24
scanner it says recovering move gently just
3:28
trying to patch in some various holes that we have it's coming
3:32
along quite nicely actually so i'm going to press stop
3:36
it's not that bad really there's i'm it's there's something there's there's
3:39
holes here yeah there's holes there color view
3:43
there's your it actually did pretty okay with the
3:47
glasses a lot better than i expected one thing that i want to clarify before we
3:50
do room scanning is that it's kind of designed for an empty room it's not
3:55
designed for a super crazy clutter really small room
4:00
like this so i'm putting it into a worst case scenario and we'll see how it works
4:04
and here we go you'll see it's kind of fun you kind of put everything in the
4:08
room into like tron almost
4:13
i'm gonna let it look at the inside
4:16
so that it can see that those are closet doors
4:20
whoa that looks funky i think i moved too
4:23
much and it tore wow so it thinks that closet is just insane
4:28
all right let's try this again i'm going to try to move less i'm going to try to
4:32
not move my position like at all
4:38
all right so you can see how much of a better job it did there when it's given
4:41
something a little bit more simple it even did a much better job of the closet
4:46
it still has a bit more depth than it probably actually has
4:50
i don't know that's that's pretty accurate actually now we can try whole
4:53
filling that makes it even a little bit better
4:57
that definitely did fix some areas the roof fan looks kind of insane on x-ray
5:02
view raw cool now let's try the last one
5:06
augmented reality so i get this little cat
5:09
and balls fall down and i have to try to go get them but because i scanned these
5:13
objects in the cat can't go through the mineral oil
5:18
bottle as you can see right there cannot go through the mineral oil bottle
5:21
but i can go around it it's a rather simple game but this is
5:26
basically a dev kit so you can go in here hack the game up
5:30
make whatever you kind of want and maybe make something a little bit more
5:34
fun than cat chase's ball around bottles of
5:38
mineral oil so that was fun but what about a
5:42
conclusion the structure sensor is cool and it's definitely fun but how
5:46
practical was it well that actually depends a lot on the operator and the
5:51
subject things that reflect or absorb a crazy amount may actually cause you some
5:55
problems and a shaky inexperienced or impatient operator will result in issues
6:01
the fact that the platform isn't the same all the time will leave you needing
6:04
to edit many of your scans in relatively minor or sometimes relatively major ways
6:09
would i recommend it yes if you need a freeform scanner for
6:13
many applications that it could be needed for instead of a contained scanner yes if you have want to have a
6:17
ton of fun with it not necessarily if you're looking for the highest potential
6:22
scanning resolution and fidelity in the end
6:26
speaking of things dollar shave club dollar shave
6:30
club is a great way to get razors and other bathroom supplies shipped directly
6:33
to your door for only a few bucks a month the razors are high quality and we
6:38
have a ton of community members who use them every day and love the smooth shave
6:42
that they get no matter how thick or coarse their facial hair may be for some
6:47
reason this comes as a shock to many people out there but yes
6:50
even though i have facial hair i do shave and i would definitely say that i
6:54
get a better shave from dollar shave club razors than those old ones that i
6:58
had the razors are pretty darn nice and on top of that the razors also come with dr
7:03
carver's shave butter which goes on smooth so you can see what you're doing
7:07
and they're peppermint scented butt wipes for men for those of you over here
7:11
in north america that can't get your hands on a bidet
7:14
so check out everything they have to offer at dollarshaveclub.com

wondering what to watch next so click the little button in the top right hand
