but can it run crisis the age-old question from The Glory Days of gaming
0:05
and computers when we all still used optical drive Windows Vista was still a
0:10
thing and 4K was just a glimmer in some developers eye since the Glory Days were
0:14
a full eight years ago we decided that it was time to ask that question again
0:18
but with Modern Hardware and see if we've gotten any closer to being able to
0:22
run crisis without having to use a like military supercomputer or something give
0:27
the video a like if you're interested in seeing another video on the steam
0:39
controller Intel brings ddr4 to the mainstream with their new core i76700 K
0:44
and core i56600k processors check out the link in the video description to
0:48
learn more so the goal here was to check out how well modern product Stacks from
0:53
both AMD and from NVIDIA could run a
0:56
completely notoriously demanding title from yester year namely The Witcher 2
1:01
assassin of the Kings from 2011 and the aformentioned crisis 1 from 2007 we ran
1:07
both games at 1080p with the settings completely maxed out including enabling
1:12
Uber sampling on The Witcher 2 which is an extremely hard to run anti-aliasing
1:17
setting that was Infamous for causing huge performance hits on gpus at the
1:21
time our AMD GPU stack included the topend R9 Nano and a surix Radeon 390x a
1:28
Gigabyte wind Force r9290 a Sapphire R9
1:32
285 compact an MSI gaming r9270 and
1:37
finally a reference r7260x on the NVIDIA side we used a
1:41
reference GeForce gtx980 TI a Gigabyte
1:44
G1 gaming gtx980 an amp Omega Edition
1:48
GTX 970 from Zotac an isus strix GTX 960
1:53
and a GTX 950 with a reference GTX 750
1:56
Ti for comparison as well we threw in a couple older cards too like a GeForce
2:01
GTX 480 as well as an 8800 GT which was
2:05
released around the same time as these games were for both Brands we use the
2:09
latest drivers as of mid October 2015
2:13
all of our testing took place on our standard test bench consisting of an
2:16
Intel Core i7 5930k processor an ASUS
2:20
x99 Deluxe motherboard 16 GB of Corsair
2:23
Vengeance ddr4 RAM a Samsung 850 Pro 1
2:27
TB SSD a Corsair h100 I GTX all-in-one
2:30
cooler and a Corsair ax1200i fully modular power supply quite
2:35
a far cry from your average high-end rig from back when crisis was released and
2:41
people were unboxing their shiny new Q 6600s with all that said let's get right
2:45
to the results people who utilized the answer to but can it run crisis as the
2:51
definitive measuring stick for any gaming rig back in the late 2000s would
2:55
probably be pleasantly surprised at how much gpus have evolved since then all
3:00
but one of our modern cards achieved playable frame rates at 1080p with
3:04
everything maxed out with higher end cards starting at the
3:08
gtx970 and the r9290 getting frame rates
3:13
between the mid 70s and low 9s not too
3:16
surprising when you consider that for example the 980 TI has more than four
3:21
times the number of cudak cor as one of the most popular top- end cards back
3:25
when crisis came out the GeForce 8800
3:29
Ultra the only modern card that came up short was our 750 Ti which only mustered
3:34
8 frames per second not so great and
3:38
therefore cannot really run crisis but
3:41
while these numbers are fine if you have a 1080p 60 HZ monitor they might leave
3:45
you feeling a little disappointed if you wanted to run crisis at higher
3:49
resolutions or frame rates than you did back in the mid 2000s but when you
3:54
consider the fact that frame rates in the 80 to 90 range are what you'll get
3:59
on number of much more recent titles on
4:02
Modern Hardware you can have expected crisis to run far better than it did for
4:07
us additionally we noticed some very prominent screen tearing on a lot of our
4:12
cards basically all of them so while our modern tech stack from gpus past the but
4:18
canot run crisis test it wasn't really with flying colors moving on to the
4:22
Witcher 2 we experienced slightly lower numbers as the game is only about 4
4:27
years old as opposed to eight but still still playable frame rates and for the
4:31
most part that's what we got with everything maxed out and Uber sampling
4:36
enabled we saw a range from 27 frames
4:39
per second on a GTX 950 and the r9270 to
4:43
65 FPS on the gtx980 ti the only cars
4:47
that didn't achieve playable frame rates were the r7260x and again the GTX 750 Ti
4:53
interestingly we saw some pretty significant differences between AMD and
4:57
NVIDIA cards during our Witcher 2 benchmarks although team red and Team
5:01
Green were a lot closer on our crisis test NVIDIA ran away from AMD in The
5:06
Witcher 2 with even the top end R9 Nano
5:09
and R9 390x trailing the GTX 970 by a
5:14
full 9 FPS and falling even further behind when compared to the top of the
5:19
NVIDIA stack cards we suspected this was due to AMD cards reacting weirdly with
5:23
Uber sampling so we tested uh without Uber sampling running and saw the FPS
5:28
jump to 100 1 on the Nano but it still
5:31
lagged behind the GTX 970 which put out
5:34
117 FPS we dug a little bit further and
5:38
we found that the Nano was throttling its GPU usage quite a bit which might
5:43
also explain the strange results we got in The Witcher 2 when we tested it on
5:46
another AMD card the Radeon 7970 back in
5:51
2012 you can check out the results of that video up here but regardless of
5:57
which team's card you have in your rig I wouldn't expect buttery smooth Gameplay
6:01
at higher than 1080p resolutions if you crank everything up this game's pretty
6:05
intense to run but even though the numbers might be slightly underwhelming
6:08
considering how long both of these games have been on the market we've still
6:12
obviously made a lot of progress in terms of how much your dollar will get
6:16
you our GTX 480 a topend card back in
6:20
2010 only put out 40 FPS in crisis and
6:23
24 FPS in Witcher two with Uber sampling
6:27
which was beaten by the 107 $7
6:30
r9270 and a GTX 950 and just in case
6:34
you've forgotten how difficult it was to run crisis our super old school 8800 GT
6:40
crashed out of Crisis but was able to get six FPS in Witcher two so what's our
6:46
conclusion other than this was pretty fun it's pretty clear that there's been
6:50
a big improvement over the past few years of what you can do with even just
6:53
a mid-range GPU but games that are
6:56
legendarily difficult to run will still live up to that reput ation to a certain
7:00
extent obviously you're still going to be in a great position to enjoy older
7:04
titles if you have a decent modern card under the hood but if you ask your
7:08
system can you run crisis at 4K you might not get that fantastic of
7:14
