0:00 when you send out a tweet about a new video card you can't afford or how great
0:04 the last episode of tech quicki was have you wondered what happens I mean sure we
0:09 all know that it goes out onto the internet but much like flushing a toilet
0:14 most people don't know exactly what happens to their chunks of uh data after
0:19 they post something so where exactly does it all go well to understand the
0:23 answer to this question it might help to keep in mind that the internet is not
0:27 owned or even governed by any one group of people I said not owned by any one
0:33 group of people but rather it works as a
0:36 distributed system made up of lots of smaller computer networks owned by
0:41 various isps universities governments and other organizations that are linked
0:46 together through what are called peering agreements but lonus hold on a second if
0:50 no one's really running the internet then how does it stay working do we even
0:53 know where it goes there are organizations that help coordinate and
0:57 direct internet traffic so that compatibil is maintained everywhere from
1:02 Ottawa to Oman probably the most well-known of these groups is I can
1:07 which maps IP addresses to Internet domain name so when you punch in let's
1:12 say Linus tips.com in your web browser
1:15 that actually isn't enough information for your computer to know what website
1:19 to show you so what happens is your ISP or Internet service provider directs it
1:24 to a DNS server which matches what you typed to the IP address that corresponds
1:29 responds to it so you can connect and keep consuming the awesome videos we
1:34 create but once you do that then how does the content itself get to your PC
1:39 one of the internet's most defining features is that it is Packet switched
1:44 meaning that all data is broken up into
1:47 little well packets and then reassembled
1:50 once it arrives at your computer and while the idea of shattering and then
1:54 reassembling something every time you need to move it won't make much sense
1:57 for things like oh I don't know human arms the advantage of this approach for
2:02 computer data is that it allows each packet to take the most efficient route
2:08 possible so if everyone in the town next
2:11 to you where your traffic would have normally been routed through start streaming Game of Thrones at exactly the
2:16 same freaking time congesting any nearby nodes causing some of your much more
2:21 important My Little Pony packets to slow down the remaining ones can be easily
2:26 and dynamically rerouted via another path mid file so your internet speeds
2:32 stay high and because packets contain in
2:35 addition to the actual content identification information that ensures
2:39 they are being sent to the right place and that they can be properly recombined
2:43 later on normally none of the data ends up as a corrupted jumbled mess either
2:50 speaking of jumbled messes if you've ever tried to do something as simple as
2:53 copy of file to an external hard drive on a Mac and then carry it over to a PC
2:57 and open it you're probably wondering how users on different operating systems
3:02 on different machines from different parts of the world all manage to use the
3:06 same internet standards bodies come to the rescue here again they make sure
3:10 that the same fundamental languages and Technologies are used throughout the
3:14 globe including w3c which is in charge of things like HTML and CSS the
3:20 languages that your web browser will interpret into something your computer
3:24 can understand so I hope this helped give you some idea how the world pulls
3:29 together without a single guiding force to give us this awesome tool for arguing
3:34 on Twitter and reading half-baked political opinions speaking of things on
3:39 the internet that are way better than arguing on Twitter fresh books it's
3:42 designed for freelance workers or small businesses and the whole idea behind it
3:47 is that instead of spending all of your time drawing up invoices and logging
3:53 your hours as you move about from place to place working on jobs you spend it
3:57 doing jobs and getting paid a it's an online tool to allow you to get your
4:02 accounting done quickly while you're on the Go versus having to sit at your
4:06 computer every night it even allows your clients to pay you online via credit
4:11 card it's just like beep beep boop send that invoice over to them and get paid
4:14 and I can tell you as a small business owner half of the battle is actually
4:19 getting the invoice sent out to the client and then the other half is
4:22 getting them to actually pay it a whole other thing anyway it shows the full
4:25 history of every invoice allows you to check if the client has viewed the invoice which is another really handy
4:30 tool oh I didn't get that oh actually you did and uh I guess that's pretty
4:35 much it so if you're Your Own Boss then the idea behind fresh books is you
4:38 should be using stuff that makes you feel like a boss and it's an easy way of
4:42 doing stuff online instead of doing stuff the old traditional way so head
4:46 over to freshbooks.com tequi and don't forget to enter
