0:00 So, today I'll be doing a quick unboxing of an ASUS Ale netbook. I actually have
0:05 been doing videos on ASUS netbooks since the very first one, but this is a far
0:11 more modern model. So, why don't we have a quick look at the specs before we open
0:14 this thing up? First of all, this is a brown box. It's pretty plain looking.
0:19 They've got their EPC slogan, easy to learn, work, and play. So, that was what
0:23 the E was all about. Easy, easy, easy. Okay. And then over on the side here,
0:28 you can see this is the 1001P model. So that means that it has
0:33 kind of a carbon fiber finish because we do have the black one. And it also has
0:38 an 11h hour battery for ASUS's all day
0:42 computing brand. Okay, so I've got a seal here. And I've had a few people
0:47 complain that I always come unprepared with no knife. So
0:52 today I have my knife ready in advance.
0:55 So, I'm just going to open this up.
0:59 There we go. You happy? There. See? The
1:04 box is open. Maybe we should just kind of pry this stuff out of here. And yeah,
1:10 there we go. Okay. So, this is what a knife can do for you,
1:15 folks. And you can unbox things all
1:21 day. Yes. Okay. So the first thing we
1:24 find inside is the ASUS EPC warranty
1:28 card which basically is going to tell us I'm assuming about the warranty. So you
1:32 want to fill in your information form
1:35 warranty condition. So 12 months means 12 months and 24 means 24 months. Okay,
1:42 that's good useful information. Thank you ASUS. All right, inside we will find
1:47 some more accessories. The first thing we will find is a battery. So this is an
1:51 11h hour battery. So that means it's probably a six cell or an 8 cell or I
1:57 actually don't know how many cells it is and I'm not going to try and guess. So
2:00 it is a 10.8 volt battery and it is rated for 4,400 milliamp hours. Okay,
2:05 the next thing we find is a battery notice. So please notice about this
2:09 battery something which we will find
2:13 out. Please notice that do not dispose
2:16 of in fire. Okay. Never attempt
2:20 shortcircuiting. Never attempt to disassemble and assemble. Do not
2:23 continue usage if leakage is found and must be recycled or disposed of
2:28 properly. Okay, I'm glad we noticed all of that. Next, we will have the AC
2:33 adapter, which comes with a handy little cable management thingy here. And then
2:39 we have the power cord that plugs into the other end of the AC adapter with
2:43 also a convenient power management cable
2:47 management rather. Power management stupid. Okay. So then you can use that
2:52 to tie it up here should you so desire
2:55 and then your cats wouldn't eat all eat it hopefully. I've actually already lost
3:00 a pair of Sennheiser HD 350 or HD PC 350
3:05 headphones or headset to my new cats.
3:08 It's very sad. So goes to show you cats
3:13 are good but they also destroy things.
3:16 Um next we have the users manual. ASUS
3:20 is devoted to creating environmentally friendly products and packagings. Yeah,
3:23 actually it's something I've pointed out on a couple ASUS products I've unboxed.
3:26 You see, it's all plain cardboard internals, protecting. There's no uh
3:30 there's no styrofoam for the most part, which is really good cuz styrofoam never
3:35 breaks down as far as we know. Okay, top
3:39 side, transportation precautions, charging your battery. So, this gives
3:42 you some basics of how to use your new AAA PC. And then this
3:48 is a lot of really small print. Okay,
3:51 why don't we have a look at the actual notebook itself. I'm going to go ahead and plug
3:56 in the battery as part of the whole introduction. Ooh, that's nice. So,
4:01 there is the carbon fiberesque finish that I was talking about before.
4:05 Cameraman, are you getting a good angle on this so that you can kind of see the
4:08 way it uh the way it changes how it looks depending which angle you're
4:12 looking at it from, which is really nice. So, they've got a nice uh silver
4:15 ASUS logo uh recessed into the top here.
4:19 That looks really, really sharp. So, when you're using this thing, you'll
4:22 look like you can go faster because your notebook is is lighter weight than the
4:26 other guys. It's got a carbon fiber hood. Yeah. Okay. So, then why don't we
4:32 have a look at the bottom of the notebook next? So, that's where the
4:36 battery is going to plug in. You can see the battery is actually quite a large
4:40 amount of the internal space of a of a netbook just because it's all about that
4:45 long computing experience. So, in order to make a little bit more room for the
4:49 battery, ASUS has put slightly larger
4:53 uh rubber pads on the back of it so that it's a little bit lean towards you when
4:58 you're using it, which makes for typing to be a little bit more comfortable as
5:02 well. So, that's a really nice design touch right there. Um keyboard itself,
5:05 why don't we have a look at that? This is one of the better netbook keyboards I
5:09 have seen. You can see there's almost no flex to it when I put pressure on it.
5:13 And the keys actually depress quite far, so you get good tactile feedback from
5:18 these keys. I mean, one of the biggest problems with a netbook is that it's
5:21 hard to tell if you're even hitting the key, the right keys sometimes. They've
5:24 also done nothing stupid as far as the keyboard layout goes. Because with a
5:28 netbook, you do have some design limitations. So, if you want to work in
5:32 multilingual support or anything like that, you start having to do weird
5:35 things like cut the shift key short or cut the backspace key short. But you can
5:39 see that we have two fulls size shift keys, a fullsized enter key, and a
5:43 fullsize backspace key. That is so critical for this kind of a machine.
5:47 Okay, why don't we have why don't we take off all the plasticky bits here?
5:51 So, we've got a nice glossy black bezel around the screen and then uh typical
5:57 ASUS high quality screen is what I would expect to find, but obviously it's not
6:01 on yet. Why don't we talk about the specs? I haven't even I haven't even
6:05 touched on the specs of this particular netbook at all at this time. So, I'm
6:11 just going to read off here. So, it uses the Atom N450. So, that's the latest
6:15 Atom processor. And the reason that it's more power savings is actually nothing
6:19 to do with the processor itself. I mean, a little tiny bit, but the original Atom
6:24 was also very efficient. It comes down to the chipset that controls the Atom
6:28 processor being much, much more efficient with this latest generation.
6:32 It's got 1 gig of RAM, 1 gig, 1 gig of RAM, a 160 gig drive, 10.1 in screen. It
6:38 has a webcam, and it comes with Windows 7 starter. So, you can see the little
6:42 Windows 7 starter. Actually, it looks like ASUS also knows that this is one of
6:46 the best keyboards they've produced for a netbook. It talks about it right
6:50 there. ergonomic keyboard, unsurpassed comfort, and I think they've really hit
6:54 the nail on the head with that one. So, why don't we have a look at all of the
6:58 connectivity? I'm expecting it to be exactly the same as every other netbook
7:01 on the market. So, first we have gigabit Ethernet, two USB ports, microphone,
7:06 headphones, and a SD card reader. Then
7:10 around the front we have nothing except some um airflow vents. Around the other
7:16 side, we will find, yes, exactly what I was expecting. One more USB port,
7:20 Kensington lock, VGA out, and then power
7:23 in. We've also got a little ventilation hole
7:27 here, although the fan on this thing is very, very, very quiet. That's not going
7:32 to bother you even in a in a very quiet setting. Uh, looks like it's going to
7:36 take a little while to get booted up here. So, I think that pretty much
7:39 covers everything that we can say about this uh this triple E. I No, one more
7:43 thing. It has a reasonableized touchpad. Thank you. This is one of my biggest
7:47 complaints about most of the early generation netbooks is that the touchpads were either not big enough or
7:53 not the same shape as the screen. So, it's got a proper widescreen touchpad
7:57 with a nice uh glossy chrome twobutton
8:00 mouse right there. So, that pretty much covers it. Thank you for checking out my
8:05 unboxing of the 1001P from ASUS.
