0:08 welcome to an unboxing that doesn't seem
0:11 at first like it would have much application to the everyday consumer
0:15 because it is A500 plus dollar scanner
0:19 but it actually has some pretty compelling things about it that might
0:22 make you want to add a fidgets you scan snap to your home so I actually already
0:27 opened this up off camera but well I had
0:30 someone else opened it up and was uh working on setting it up but I have not
0:34 seen the contents yet so why don't we start by just getting it opened up and
0:39 I'll talk about some of the features as we go and after the fact so first we
0:43 have our AC adapter so that's pretty pretty run of the- Mill next we have
0:47 some packing materials also pretty runof-the-mill
0:51 and finally we have the scan snap
0:55 itself which is not run-ofthe-mill and I will explain why it's actually really
0:59 heavy better just put that down this is not a portable scanner although it does
1:03 have a very small form factor so it will easily fit on your desk next we have oo
1:08 a carrier sheet so I'll explain what the carrier sheet does in a moment as well
1:13 but let's just finish up the unboxing side of things so this is a what is it 8
1:19 1/2 by 14 I believe carrier sheet all
1:23 right and then finally we have a couple more accessories so this guy right here
1:27 this is a oh demo eval checklist so your retail unit won't come with one of those
1:32 and finally we have a scans snap setup DVD ROM as well as a USB cable and a
1:39 power cable to plug into the AC adapter so give me a couple seconds because I am
1:43 going to use a cheat sheet for this I'm going to kind of hide it a little actually you know what let's just get
1:47 started so this is the scans snap s1500
1:51 so why don't we start with that carrier sheet I'm sorry that was 11 by 17 it can
1:56 be okay give me a sec guys so let's do
2:00 the overall physical layout of the scans snap S500 so you lift it up like this
2:05 that's all pretty straightforward you pull it up like that you can load in
2:08 whatever documents you see fit so just for the sake of uh for the sake of
2:12 demonstration why don't we take our carrier sheet which is just a clear
2:16 plastic film that closes over a damaged
2:20 document it can also be used uh rather creatively I might add to scan pages
2:26 that are up to 11 by 17 by folding them
2:29 in half over the carrier sheet and the software itself will automatically
2:32 Stitch it together so there you go that's how you load a page onto it you
2:36 press scan in order to scan it now there's almost nothing in terms of
2:39 buttons on the scans snap itself you can see at the front there's no buttons
2:43 there's just the um output for the paper
2:47 documents that you have scanned on the side there's pretty much nothing on the
2:51 other side pretty much nothing on the bottom pretty much nothing and on the
2:57 back oh okay hold on there's a couple things on the back so on the back we
3:00 have the uh DC input as well as the USB
3:04 input so there you have it that is the physical characteristics of the s1500
3:09 now most of the magic is in the software and if you've ever bought a scanner and
3:13 tried to use it in the past you'll know that the software can be a bit of a bear
3:19 it'll make her break a scanner because it can have the best image quality in
3:22 the world but if the software crashes on you every 30 seconds which I have
3:25 experienced in the past then that's not going to do you any good um
3:30 so let's go through the features I'm totally going to use my cheat sheet here and I'm very sorry guys but there's a
3:34 lot of different points that I did want to cover so it scans both sides of the
3:38 document that you run through it okay it can correct for things like upside down
3:43 Pages if your document is accidentally running through a little bit crooked now
3:46 it does have guides here so you can adjust it to different sizes of of paper
3:51 but just in case it does run through a little bit crooked by accident it will
3:55 actually uh automatically correct that it'll automatically remove blank pages
3:59 it'll autoc crop according to the document type so A4 checks business
4:04 cards and this is all stuff you can control in the software you can
4:08 actually scan to text and you can make
4:11 it a searchable PDF so if you were to take a text document um Excel sheets
4:17 actually don't work all that well but if you were to take a uh a more text Heavy
4:22 document and scan it through here it'll automatically convert all of that text
4:26 to a searchable PDF which is pretty cool because it means that if if you're ever
4:30 trying to find uh a check from your work
4:35 for example as long as you scan all your stubs through here all you have to do is
4:38 search for it and you can bring up all of the checks in one go so here we go
4:43 one click can okay give me a sec guys
4:47 now along the lines of the uh the scannable searchable text if you take
4:52 your document and you actually highlight certain text so let's say you
4:57 highlighted uh anything to do with uh with a stove RMA that you were dealing
5:02 with for the longest time so you just highlight stove on any document that you
5:06 scan through it and you can actually set it to automatically create metadata so
5:11 you can create tags for that document based on anything that you highlighted
5:15 which makes it very easy to index things according to and organize according to
5:20 what it was actually for you can also do highlighter cropping so if you uh were
5:25 to cut out something with a highlighter and you set it in the software it'll
5:30 automatically crop that document according to the section you highlighted which is pretty neat as well works fine
5:34 on photos although it is by design a
5:38 document scanner it has the resolution it has the color accuracy to do photos
5:41 no problem and all of that auto orientation stuff uh and all those
5:47 correction type things will work on photos as well it scans directly into
5:50 ioto but the included Fujitsu software is PC oriented so it is more of a PC
5:56 Product than a Mac product so stay away from the dislike button you guys it has
6:00 replacement parts for the feeders so oh
6:03 hey there you go hey there's something I missed I knew it would have somewhere
6:07 for the out documents there we go so now we can see it works a little bit better
6:11 okay so you actually okay but have you guys
6:15 ever had a gravity fed printer that
6:19 starts to take up two pages at a time or stops taking up Pages at all you've
6:24 probably encountered this in the past Fujitsu actually allows you to replace
6:28 the rubber pieces replace the feeders according to when they need to be
6:33 replaced you don't actually have to buy a new scanner so they do inventory those
6:36 parts you can get them you don't have to just throw it away like you do with most
6:41 printers so there you go now that makes a lot more sense it actually folds up
6:45 really compact doesn't it that's cool let's do it one more
6:51 time there we go okay finally business
6:56 cards it'll do business cards as long as they're not on a black background which
7:00 most of them aren't it'll do business cards in a wide variety of different
7:04 languages and it'll organize them for you it'll scan all the text so all you
7:09 have to do in terms of your Rolodex is
7:12 have a scan snap that you run all your business cards through and then just search by name or by company name
7:17 whatever the case may be on your computer and it'll take care of all that for you as well so this is my unboxing
7:22 of the Fujitsu scans snap I actually have a tech tips episode coming up on
7:25 this once I've spent some more time with the unit because you can see this is my
7:29 very first run at it right now and thank
7:32 you for checking out my video blog don't forget to subscribe to lus techtips for more unboxings reviews and other
